Citius, Altius, fortius, …Higher, faster, stronger…as the Olympic slogan says. The same applies to an athlete who continually hones skills. Every year is an opportunity to grow and

each competition is an arena to polish one’s ability. Like any other Palarong Pambansa competitions, this year is once again a chance to discover players who have potentials to fill the athletic coffer of the region.

Aside from the previous gold medal turners, other players whom our camera lens did not miss because of showing great promise come from various events. Our team nodded in agreement with the super-vising officials who pointed them as potential Warrior-medalists.

A sturdy gal who tapes her discus throws at 30 feet the least during trainings is Mary Jane Lawas. She has started joining the Palaro since grade six. Last year, she landed 4th in her throws and is cited to move up her rank this year as her previous contenders already graduated.

When she joined the open competition in Palawan last March 19-22, she got the bronze in shot put opposite her college opponents. According to coach, Noli Pabilico, the time has come for Mary Jane to reap the fruits of her training as her previous strong contenders are not there anymore.

Another girl power is a first-time Palaro athlete. She was the most bemedalled athlete in this year’s SRAA Meet in archery.

Although she started late as this is yet her second year in archery, she has shown so much promise. She got gold in 30”, 40”, 50”, and 60” distances hence grabbing the over-all

champ medal. Adding to her gold are the Olympic archery, mixed doubles, and team shooting.

This lass is the sweet- in- person-but-fierce-in-competition grade 9 student, Kimberly Puyong. - Zynafe V. Caijo

“It’s not about fighting but it’s all about building confidence and self- discipline.”

Taekwondo was just for

self-defense at first, yet she fell in love into it. Not only because she wants to protect herself from perpetrators but also she finds that this sport gives more mean-ing to her life.

Jeanisse Patricia Jubelag, a black belt holder represents SOCCSKSARGEN region for the fifth time to this prestigious national competition.

This 16 year-old lass has snatched the following medals in the previous palaro: silver (sparring) and bronze (indi-vidual and team poomsae) in 2009, bronze (sparring) in 2012, and silver (individual poomsae) in 2014.

She plans to study in University of the Philippines-Diliman this June, where she qualified in UP Taekwondo Club she has tried out recently.

Meanwhile, younger Jo-anna Pauline wants to follow the footsteps of her sister. Just like Jeanisse, Joanna enrolled in the training class at the age of eight.

Her dedication and per-severance to this sport brought

her the following achievements in palaro: bronze (sparring) in 2012, gold (team poomsae) and silver (sparring) in 2013, and gold in team poomsae last year.

Both sisters bank on exper-tise and experience to grab the gold for 2015 Palarong Pam-bansa in Tagum City.

As daughters of journalist-publisher John Paul T. Jubelag, they value their studies. Conflict

between the schedule of tourna-ments and examinations has taught them so much about time management.

These jins from GenSan be-lieve that to conquer others, you need to conquer yourself first. Committed to further enhance their prowess, they dream to be-come members of the Philippine Team someday.

Meawhile, the techni-cal team is also conducting a strict monitoring on the billeting quarters and dis-cipline of the athletes and coaches by giving awards to those who got the clean-est quarter or the honor room and giving penalties to those who observed the horror room.

Dr. Allan Farnazo also imposed a “Greet before you eat rule” wherein the delegates must state their group first and greet every-body before they can get their meals for the day.

Winners of the differ-ent special events will be receiving cash prizes and recognition form the DepEd Central Office.

Region 12 managed to grab 2 silver and one bronze medal on the first day of the Palaro sports hostilities held at Tagum City, Davao del Norte.

Al-Nahquiev Sappari grabbed the first silver medal for the region in triple jump event for Boys/Elem.

Kent Hipona of Region VI settled for Bronze for his 11.42-meter.

Chess players Andre Miguel Jorgio from General Santos City and Sumail Sekak of Cotabato City won another Silver medal for team event; while Jorge won another Bronze for Blitz tourna-ment.

Magdaleno Duhilag, regional sports coordinator said, it’s still a long way to go since it’s the first day of the sports events.

“There is still more time to recover and win more medals for the region.” he said.

For group events, Region 12 won in the Baseball Elementary and Secondary events against Eastern Visayas Region.

The team also won the Basketball match for Girls/ Sec 80 - 59 against EVRAA; and Bas-ketball Boys/Elem. 88-30 against ARMMAA.

SOCCSKSARGEN Ele-mentary male smashers whacked out Region 1 in their two out of three volleyball match securing one of the first wins of Region 12 on the first day of Palarong Pambansa, Brgy. Magugpo Gym, May 3.

Region’s libero, Elizha Edison Pagang-pang displayed defensive strength and led his team in snatching the mo-mentum to topple the opponent.

Double-block defense proved a winning strategy employed by coaches Ildefonso Libdan and Marlon Natayada. Deploying double team ups of Sagrado-Suarez and Castillon-Delfin gave way for the team’s

supremacy.Leading strong on the first

set, the Warriors posted series of points to conclude the set at 25-23. However, the Warriors let down their guards and com-mitted series of errors giving way for the opposite team to deuce at 22 and finally losing the set to R-1 , 23-25.

With the tossing skills of Francis Galo, the Warriors turned the tables around and buoyed back to control the rhythm of the game concluding the third set at 25-17.
