Last Month’s DCM News (by Mahmood Bashir)Our June DCM, on Thursday June 11, was hosted by theMonrovia Club. President Diane Balsamo did a fantastic jobhosting. We got off to a early start with a very motivational andinspiring talk by Kimberly Guillen, our guest for the evening.

Kimberly is a medal winning Special Athlete, who is also an ambassador for the World Games coming to LA area in Julyand August. Club representation and attendance was great, we had a total of forty seven in attendance. Nine out of ten ofour clubs were represented (so close to our goal of 100% participation). All four of our SLP LTGs were in attendance, inaddition to KIWINS District Governor Jade Wong. We also had Grace Chi, Foothill Circle-K Regional Advisor inattendance. Club reports were impressive, with all clubs reporting a busy month of service and fundraising activities.Clubs in attendance reported over 2,580 service hours for the month of May. Our SLP LTGs Austin Ly D35W and SabrinaBodine D35E, Sophia Uemura Goldstone KIWINS, and Stephanie Trinh Foothill Circle-K, presented their reports. Theywere impressive as always. KIWINS District Governor Jade Wong reported that KIWINS have set a goal of rising$20,000.00 for project ELIMINATE this year and are already off to a great start. They have raised over $5,000 so far thisyear. Grace Chi, Regional Advisor Foothill Circle-K, thanked the division for our support of the youth and encouraged usto get stronger as a Division so we can increase our support of the youth in our communities. Keeping Up with thetradition at our DCMs this year, the SLP asked Diane Balsamo “that question” feared by most Kiwanis, "How do youFeel?" Diane asked for help from our SLP, who joined her and performed the cheer associated with the question, "I feelgood. Oh so good." This made for some light moments as all in attendance enjoyed the performance. The Monrovia Clubdid a great job hosting a well planned and fun DCM. Thank You Monrovia.A huge shout out and our thanks to all our members in attendance for their patience as the DCM did run a little longerthan scheduled. See you all next month.

Duarte Kiwanis Club News Scholarships for DHS SeniorsIt’s always a pleasure to recognize outstanding achievements in Duarte High Schoolgraduating seniors. Duarte Kiwanis President, Mirna de Lira Lopez had the honor topresent four scholarships to DHS graduates at the 2015 Senior Breakfast.

(Pictured from left, Scholarship Recipients, Leonard Ramirez, Jesus Sabate, Luisa Flores,Emmanuel Avison and Mirna de Lira Lopez, Duarte Kiwanis President.)

Community Focused Technology Company DLLClub President Mirna de Lira Lopez has been “one of those women” her entire life. From elementary school, Mirna was an excellent student, finishing her work early – so she would become the teacher’sassistant, tutoring her fellow students and asking, “What else can I do to help?”Today, the motto of her company, DLL, is simple – WORK, PLAY & GIVE.WORK stands of DLL Biz; PLAY stands for DLL Home; and GIVE stands for DLL Community. Inthis subsidiary, Mirna is able to provide outreach, education and internship opportunities to studentsin the area.It is this GIVE that Mirna presented her internship program at a recent Duarte Kiwanis meeting.Mirna has become a mentor to students at MIT, and one of these mentees, Jesus Velasco, has beenworking on a new website for the Club. Jesus works as an intern at DLL and in his work, hasdecided that web design and programming is his choice for his life work. It was through Mirna’svision that these opportunities have blossomed to partner student interns with non-profits in the area– the students get real-life experience and the non-profits get badly needed support at a reducedcost – or even free.

overcome barriers to success through culturally and linguistically competent education, employmentand social services.” At a recent Duarte Kiwanis meeting, we learned the areas of focus for AYC –Education Enrichment, Youth and Family Services, Employment Services, and Community Outreach.(Pictured from left – Duarte Kiwanis President and DLL CEO, Mirna de Lira Lopez, and Michelle Freridge, Executive DirectorAYC.)

BLANKETS OF LOVE GO TO LOMA LINDA UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTERPEDIATRIC PATIENTS PROTON TREATMENT UNIT

Story by David MalkinTwo years after the Kiwanis Club of Hacienda Heights, and the Orange Grove Builders Club delivered 200 blankets toLoma Linda University Medical Center, Mathew Malkin, MD, an anesthesiologist at LLUMC, and the son of one of ourmembers, submitted a request to have additional blankets donated to the pediatric patients in the Loma Linda ProtonTreatment Unit. A call was put out and our honorary members, Ted and Nancy Strinz, found 18 more completed blanketsat Orange Grove Builders Club. During the past two years staffing had changed at LLUMC and contacts were lost. Withthe help of Dr. Mathew Malkin again, he was able to put us in contact with the new supervisors and help coordinate thedelivery of the additional 18 blankets on a recent Friday. Needless to say, the supervisor of the Proton Treatment Unitwas very thankful for our donation. The blankets were given to the children who are undergoing a series of Protontreatments for brain tumors over a period of multiple weeks. ----

DIVISION 100% PARTICIPATION GOALSby Mahmood Bashir, Division 35 Lieutenant Governor

We encourage all ten of our clubs to have representation and attendanceat every Division event, such as DCM's, service projects, Governor's Visit, socials, etc.

We encourage all ten of our clubs to participate in all SLP activities bymaking themselves available to chaperon their DCM's, service projects, socials, fundraisers, club meetings, etc.

We encourage all ten of our clubs to award at least one DSA, this year, preferably at the Governor's Visit.

We encourage all ten of our clubs to ask each and every member of the clubto participate in Project ELIMINATE, and earn the 100% participationbanner patch.

We encourage all ten of our clubs to set a goal to be recognized as a"Distinguished Club." We can do this, the hardest requirement is to endthe year with net one member growth at the end of the year. If you don'tfinish with net one growth, then you must sponsor or co-sponsor a new Kiwanis Club. The most important is to turn in yourapplication for this recognition at the end of the year before the deadline.

We encourage all ten of our clubs to earn the Division and the District Patriotism banner patch. For requirementsand turning in your paperwork consult Rona Lunde, our patriotism Chair.

We encourage all ten of our clubs to successfully complete a “Round Robin" for Inter-Clubs and earn the Districtbanner patch. The club must have a Inter-Club with all other clubs in our Division in order to complete a "Round Robin."We also encourage all ten of our clubs to try to complete a "Super Round Robin" which requires the club to have a Inter-Club with all other clubs in the Division, and in addition have each member of the club attend at least one Inter-Club.

We encourage all ten of our clubs to have at least one member of the club earn the Distinguished Kiwanian Award(DKA), a District award, and the "Member of the Year," an International award. The hardest requirement for both is tosponsor two new members for the club. For requirements and turning in your paper work consult our DKA Chair TerriThomas.

We encourage all ten of our clubs to actively fund raise and participate in Relay For Life (RFL) in their communities, and if their community does nor have one, to participate in their neighboring communities which do.

We encourage all ten of our clubs to have their presidents, along with some of their members, attend the DistrictConvention in August, which will be held in Sacramento.

Discussion of Kiwanis International DuesKiwanis International provides tools, resources and other support to help clubs, divisions and districtsthrive, so Kiwanis can be a positive global force, united to improve the world. Membership dues makethis possible.Stewardship of the budget is a responsibility Kiwanis International does not take lightly. While it hasbeen 12 years since the most recent dues increase, staff and the board have worked carefully tooperate within the same budget constraints set in 2003—in fact, decreasing spending by $3.9 millionsince 2005.Rising inflation and decreased dues revenue have now, however, brought the organization’s financialfuture in question. As Kiwanis works to strengthen membership and identify and create new non-dues income sources, the Kiwanis International Board proposed two amendments to provide both a short- and long-termapproach to maximize support available to clubs, divisions and districts immediately and in thefuture: a one-time flat increase of US$10 per member* in 2015 [APPROVED], plus the option toadjust dues not more than 5 percent thereafter, as needed [DEFEATED].

Facts aboutdues todayIt has been 12 years since the last dues increase for Kiwanis International. The last dues increase, in 2003, was projected at that time to last 7-8 years.Over the course of 12 years, the consumer price index has gone up over 20%.US$42 in 2003 is equal to about $33 today. The Kiwanis International board (past and present) and staff have operated over the past 12 years with the samebudget confines from 2003.Kiwanis has decreased spending by US$3.9 million since 2005.84% of Kiwanis International's total revenue currently comes from membership dues and fees.Membership has steadily decreased year after year since 1992. Since 2005, North American membership hasdecreased nearly 29%.It is projected that under the current conditions, Kiwanis' operating fund will be in the red as early as 2017, and KiwanisInternational will run out of unrestricted funds to cover those deficits.Kiwanis International is working now to identify and create new sources of income to rely less on membershipdues. This long-term solution is part of the I-Plan, the Kiwanis strategic plan. The flat US$10 dues increase is an investment of 83 cents per month.Annual dues of US$52 are well in line with Kiwanis' peer organization international dues, with many having moreexpensive dues: Soroptimist $52, Rotary $54, Optimist $61, Civitan $62, Sertoma $80. Lions is lowest at $43.The option for dues adjustment would allow the board to adjust dues each year by a percentage appropriate to thefinancial environment—and no more than 5%.Many organizations have authorized its board to adjust dues because it allows the organization to be nimble and morequickly react to unforeseen circumstances.Even with approval of the proposal, Kiwanis still must focus on strengthening membership, opening new clubs anddeveloping non-dues revenue streams.During the 2015 Kiwanis International Council meeting—composed of the Kiwanis International Board, past presidents, and district governors—members supported, by vote, the need for a dues increase and supported the recommendationof a flat $10 increase [PASSED at KIConvention] with an annual adjustment option [DEFEATED at KIConvention] of nomore than 5 percent per year thereafter.
