Spring Break Safety Tips MSU Student Housing and Resident Life

recognizes that students need a break between

courses, studying, and papers to ensure success.

All students should understand that whether

you are staying in town, traveling out of state or

abroad, your safety is your number one priority.

The following are some general safety tips to

follow:

Before your Leave:

Secure your room, apartment.

Make sure all windows are closed and locked.

Leave a copy of your travel itinerary and emergency contact

information with someone back home.

Travel:

Track your baggage and personal belongings at all times.

Don’t have your names and address highly visible on your

luggage.

Pack tools, sunscreen, sunglasses with UV protection, hat,

first aid kit, car safety and maintenance materials, water and

snacks.

Keep those with whom you are traveling with and someone

back home informed of any changes to you itinerary.

If you are traveling outside of the USA (including Canada

and Mexico), make sure you have an up-to-date passport,

proper visa and get to know the laws and rules of that

country.

Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Traveler’s checks are

always a good idea. Leave credit cards and ATM cards

locked in a secure place.

Make sure you are aware of the location and contact

information for the police and any other emergency contacts,

such as the hospital, where you are traveling.

Hotel/ Motel:

Lock your door. Do not open for strangers, verify hotel

personnel.

Don’t leave valuables in your hotel.

Know where the emergency exits are located.

Don’t climb on balconies or sit on balcony rails.

Do not overcrowd elevators– this can cause malfunctions.

Personal Safety:

Always walk, talk, sit and act with confidence. Avoid looking

like you're lost or like a tourist.

There’s safety in numbers. Try your best to stay around your

friends.

Beware of pickpockets.

Don’t allow yourself to be taken to an isolated location.

Don’t walk alone. Use a buddy system.

Never leave with someone you just met. Know the difference

between making friends and allowing yourself to be alone with

a stranger.

Don’t leave your drink unattended. Don’t accept open drinks

from strangers.

Don’t bring strangers back to your room and give out any

personal information about yourself or anyone else.
