FOR ARTS’ SAKE

‘Break a Leg’ in Mayby Aaron Chatha

This May you may be looking for some activities for the kiddies, especially as the school year nears its end. The Calgary International Children’s Festival takes place near the end of the month, with catchy music, explo-sive science and even pyjama parties for kids K – 6. Some of the biggest shows include The Rainbow Fish, the Okee Dokee Brothers and the always entertaining Doktor Kaboom.

In the world of children’s classics, the window is closing the see Theatre Calgary’s stunning musical version of The Secret Garden. Relive the classic children’s book as a young orphan discovers the key to a neglected garden – which itself is the key to her family’s heart.

While the kiddies have their fun during the day, the adults can get their funny bones tickled by the hilari-ous – and often shocking – Jimmy Carr, who performs for one night.

Welcome to the good weather (which definitely took its time to arrive) with the laid-back tunes of Toronzo Can-non. Born and raised in Chicago, Cannon used to drive a bus by day and electrify blues clubs at night. Cannon has become a star in the blues scene for his soulful bal-lads, swinging shuffles and earing blues anthems, which he will bring to the Martha Cohen Theatre.

Finally, in the wake of Montreal, Columbine, Orlando and other tragedies, Downstage theatre takes an in-sightful and biting look at the modern world in Miss Katelyn’s Grade Threes Prepare for the Inevitable. The show was the winner of Best Production at the 2015 Montreal Fringe Festival, as it runs through panic, pre-vention and paranoia in a post-truth world.

May the arts be with you Calgary!

This column is provided by Arts Commons. Located in the heart of Calgary’s vibrant downtown core, Arts commons is home to six different distinct performance venues.

months of JULY and AUGUST

May flowers! Thank goodness that April snowfall is behind us??

I am going to revisit the off-leash area in Shouldice Park as it seems to continue to be a bit of a hot spot.

To be clear, the City identified the pathway in question as a missing link to the existing pathways. Park users noticed activ-ity within the Park, learned of the pathway construction and notified the Community Association. As a Community Associa-tion, we facilitated meetings between park users and the City of Calgary. The park user group was asked to provide represen-tatives to speak on behalf of the group in the meetings. The City has met with representatives from the park at two formal meetings (once with Ward Sutherland and once with Druh Farrell’s team) and I have met with them on other occasions. The City has listened to the group and have altered the plan to meet most of the requests. There is no intention to com-promise the consistent and regular use of that space as it currently exists.

Part of the engagement was a request for the group to have a consistent message. They have not. Some want the pathway for accessibility some want it to remain “natural “. The thing is, this is not considered a natural area. It is an area that is a natural state of weeds and overgrowth.

The City changed the plans to accommodate the requests from the group as best as they could. Specifically, the final plan presented is to separate the bike path from a pedestrian path instead of a multi-use path (a request for the group). The bike lane will be located on the south side of 13th Ave (a request to not have the bike path run close to the river where there would be more chance for accidental contact between dogs and bikes), and to have it following as closely as possible to the current foot worn path. This would minimize the need to remove trees and shrubs in the area closer to 13th (a request from the user group representatives). They will then put a fence along the south of the bike path to minimize accidental inter-actions between dogs and bikes (another request from the park users). There will be a second walking-only path that will go closer to the river. The pathway needs to be paved to meet the City’s accessibility standards. Again, some of the group members thought this would be great with opportunities to invite seniors and families with strollers into the area while oth-ers wanted a more natural cover. Based on City policies for ac-cessibility, it has to be paved. This was one area on which the City was firm.

The space will remain largely as it is now, with lots of opportu-nities for all to enjoy the natural beauty and the access to the river. The City has no plans to restrict or limit access to the area or to monitor it as an unofficial off-leash area. The only trees that will be removed are ones that are already dead or pose a risk of falling.

There is a second, separate request to apply for a formal off-leash area. In speaking with the Shouldice Park manager, they hesitate because it would then be advertised and could be-come very busy, adding to the significant parking issues in the park. They are happy leaving it as a community off-leash area with many of the users coming from outside of the community.

We invited the representative from the user group to our De-cember board meeting where we discussed this. As a Board, we support the City making investments in the community. We unanimously decided not to pursue the official off-leash area.

There are no plans for further development in the area anytime soon. There is a Shouldice Park master plan that was written in May 2005, which identifies the site as a space for 4 baseball diamond quads similar to the one on the other side of 13th. I spoke to the facility manager at the park and there are no plans to do any construction in the dog park area. There may very likely be a need for an updated master plan particularly given the significant flooding that occurred in the area in 2013.

If we applied for an off-leash area, this area may not meet the off-leash checklist requirements; specifically:•It is not in the Parks inventory. This parcel of land is held by

Recreation, not Parks.•It does not fill a gap in service area. In fact, this would be the

fourth off-leash area in the community of Montgomery.•Parking is not adequate.•There is likely concern regarding erosion of the land, specifi-

cally some of the bank area into the river.

If there was a threat to the area, then we could engage with the City; at this time, there is no threat to the use of the area. Having met with the City, we are satisfied to leave the area as an unoffi-cial off-leash area. We have received a petition related to leaving the space as it is or to apply for an official off-leash area. We have reviewed the information and have decided not to pursue it.

Secondly, we have been getting concerns from residents about the increase in parking in the community. We are exploring options related to parking around park spaces (Montalban and George Gell). We are also wanting to support residents who would like to move to permit parking on their block. To this end, we are proposing a couple of ideas: At the community clean-up, there will be a survey to gage interest and if there is enough interest, then we could hold an evening at the Com-munity Centre in June to move this process along. If you are not planning on attending the clean-up but are interested in park-ing on your block, please send me an email and I will follow up.

As always, I appreciate all of your input and suggestions; to-gether, we can keep working to make Montgomery a great place to live, play, and work!

Happy Spring (finally)Marilyn

SOUTH SHAGANAPPI AREA STRATEGIC PLANNING GROUP

The South Shaganappi Area Strategic Planning Group is a group of community representatives and stakehold-ers that meet on a monthly basis to inform and respond to a number of institutional and infrastructure develop-ment projects in the area.

SSASPG was given a presentation by The City of Calgary regarding the Varsity Multi-Services Redevelopment Project. The site of this project is the City owned land to the north of the Varsity Fire Station on the corner of 32 Avenue and 37 Street NW. The existing fire hall is 46 years old and not meeting current needs. It is antici-pated that the need will increase 80% over the next 25 years. The existing fire hall will remain in operation until construction on the new station is completed. In con-junction with the new station the City is proposing 48 units of low income housing on the site ranging from one to three bedrooms.

The construction of the Calgary Cancer Project remains on track. Piling installation is complete. Shoring and ex-cavation continues. Four tower cranes, one in each cor-ner of the site, will be installed beginning in late April. Temporary single lane closures may be required to ac-commodate the delivery of the cranes to the site.

Cadillac Fairview reported that the exterior work to the building that was previously occupied by HomeSense is nearing completion. PCL Construction is clearing the site and readying it to hand over to Sak’s Off Fifth May 15, 2018. Landmark Theatres has submitted their devel-opment permit application to the City of Calgary’s Plan-ning & Building Department for approval.

Vecova has issued a Request for Proposal for a prime consultant for its redevelopment. They also announced the re-opening of the Bottle Depot. The depot has un-dergone renovations and now operates in a fully auto-mated state.

Montgomery Community GardenInterested in growing local food? in learning how to gar-den? in getting to know more people in Montgomery?

Montgomery has one of the few communal community gardens in Calgary. This means that instead of boxes as-signed to individuals or a family that we work one big plot together and share the harvest. Together we plan what to plant, plant together, tend to it together and then share in the harvest. This is a great way to share the workload but results in a larger variety of food to take home too. There is flexibility as we have people that like to come each day to do a little work and others who may only be able to make it for a longer work ses-sion once every couple of weeks. Many hands make for light work and we communicate with the whole group to initiate work-bees. There is also the ability to connect with a buddy to help you learn the ropes of gardening if this is new to you.

Our great location off 48th Street, is big and sunny, and has a park adjacent to it.

If interested, the cost is $20 per family to join as well as the cost of an MCA membership, if you don’t have one already. It is a great price for organic potatoes, lettuce, carrots, zucchini, kale, raspberries, etc. grown down the street.

The History Behind Canada’s Tulip FestivalBy Rosemary Gell

It is a well-known fact that Canada and the Netherlands share a special bond that dates back to the Second World War. What is, perhaps, a little less well-known is why. During the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands in World War II, the Dutch Royal family took refuge in Otta-wa. One of the most notable events of their stay was the birth of Princess Margriet at the Ottawa Civic Hospital in 1943. To ensure the new princess’s Dutch citizenship, her hospital room was temporarily declared Dutch soil.

During 1944 and 1945, the Canadian Army played a major part in liberating the Netherlands, which they did through battles at Scheldt and the liberation of Arnhem. In May 1945, the German general Blaskowitz surrendered to the Canadian General, Charles Foulkes, officially ending the war in the Netherlands.

Towards the end of the war, many people in the Nether-lands were starving. Winston Churchill’s letter to Roos-evelt dated April 10, 1945 stated that, “The plight of the civil population in occupied Holland is desperate. Between two and three million people are facing starvation. We believe large numbers are dying daily.” To help these starving people, the Royal Canadian Air Force coordi-nated airdrops of food into densely populated areas such as Randstad. In appreciation of these efforts, the Dutch people have donated thousands of tulip bulbs to Ottawa since 1945 onwards.

For those of us who have lived in Ottawa, we are well aware of this part of Canada’s history. Every year in May Ottawa holds their “Tulip Festival” where the Dutch con-tribution of tulips is complemented with well over one million more tulips that are on display throughout Ot-tawa. Tulips of every colour of the rainbow and every shape and size can be seen. It is one of Canada’s best outdoor events that every Canadian should experience and remains today an important reminder of a special friendship long shared by our two nations.
