COLD OPEN

INT. THE OFFICE - JIM AND DWIGHT’S DESKS - MORNING

DWIGHT and JIM work at their computers.

INT. THE OFFICE - RECEPTION AREA - CONTINUOUS

Two MORMON MEN enter and move to PAM at her desk.

PAMCan I help you?

MORMON MAN #1Yes, we’re looking for a Dwight Schrute.

PAMDwight, for you again.

Dwight groans and drops his head to his desk.

Jim holds back a grin.

JIM TALKING HEAD

JIMYesterday, Pam sneezed and I said God bless you. Dwight proceeded to go on a twenty minute tangent about why there was no higher power in the universe. So, naturally, I called every church, mosque, parish, and temple in town and expressed Dwight’s interest in knowing more about their faith.

SERIES OF SHOTS - PAM’S DESK - EARLIER

-- A PRIEST stands by Pam at her desk.

PAMDwight, a Father Mahoney...

-- A BAPTIST PREACHER stands by Pam at her desk.

PAM (CONT’D)...a Reverend J.D. Caruthers...

-- A RABBI stands by Pam at her desk.

PAM (CONT’D)...Rabbi Benjamin Rothschild...

Page 5: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

-- A WOMAN in a white robe stands by Pam at her desk.

PAM (CONT’D)...Priestess Moonriver for you.

The Woman gives Dwight the peace sign and Dwight turns to Jim, who lowers his head farther in a binder he’s reading.

INT. THE OFFICE - JIM AND DWIGHT’S DESKS - BACK TO PRESENT

The two Mormons are now standing by Dwight’s desk as he sits.

MORMON MAN #2But if you’ll just let us tell you about The Church of...

DWIGHT--No thank you! I’m fine, really!

MORMON MAN #1At least let us leave you a tract.

Dwight reaches into a desk drawer and pulls out a whole stack of tracts, slamming them down on his desk.

DWIGHT TALKING HEAD

DWIGHTIs there a God? No. Not a possibility. I don’t believe in anything I can not see...unless we’re discussing Ninjas...I do believe in those.

END OF COLD OPEN

ACT ONE

INT. THE OFFICE - FRONT DESK - LATER

Jim and Pam chat at her desk. MICHAEL approaches.

MICHAELPamson and Delilah!

JIMWhat?

MICHAELYou know...

Michael flexes his arms.

MICHAEL (CONT’D)He hit people in the jaw with a donkey’s ass.

JIMI don’t think...

MICHAEL(to Pam)

--Any messages?

PAMNot since earlier.

MICHAELOkey doke. Oh, did you send those estimate reports to corporate yet?

Pam shakes her head.

PAMWe’re really backlogged. It’s going take longer then you thought.

MICHAELWell...I promised Wallace they’d be in tomorrow so...

PAMDo you want me to stay after and finish?

MICHAELNo! No that’s not what I said...it’s just...my word is my bond.

3.

Page 7: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

PAMI’ll stay after.

MICHAELSuper! You’re the best.

Michael leaves.

PAM(to Jim)

It shouldn’t take very long. Couple of hours.

JIMAnd it can’t wait?

PAMHis word is his bond.

JIMAlright, but, when your done, I’m taking you out for dinner.

PAMNo, I can make something. It’s cheaper.

Pam and Jim stare at each other in silence.

PAM TALKING HEAD

PAMLook, I love Jim dearly, but he just isn’t that good at picking restaurants. In the last six months we’ve ate at three...around eight times each.

INT. OFFICE - FRONT DESK - MOMENTS LATER

JIMOh, come on. It’s my treat. How bout Scanlan’s?

PAMWe ate there last week.

JIMConey Island?

PAMThe week before. Look, let’s try something a little different.

4.

Page 8: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

JIMKeystone’s...

PAM--Last month.

PAM TALKING HEAD

Pam holds up three fingers.

PAMThree.

INT. PHYLLIS, STANLEY, AND ANDY’S DESKS - LATER

STANLEY and ANDY work while PHYLLIS talks on the phone.

PHYLLIS(into phone)

No...yes...no I understand. It’s not a problem really. Your flight is when? Yes I can meet you. Okay, see you then...bye bye.

Phyllis holds down the phone’s receiver. She lets out a sigh and dials once more.

INT. MICHAEL’S OFFICE - MOMENTS LATER

Michael sits at his desk working on a crossword while Dwight stands over him.

MICHAELAn eight letter word for “The result of too much partying.”

DWIGHTSyphilis

MICHAELWhat? No! God...oh, hangover.

Michael writes in the puzzle. KNOCK at the DOOR.

MICHAEL (CONT’D)Come in.

Phyllis enters.

DWIGHTWhat is it Phyllis? Michael’s very busy.

5.

Page 9: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

MICHAELCool your jets Dwight.

(to Phyllis)What’s up?

PHYLLISIt’s Devin Ulrich from Custom Printing. He called and said he needs to meet me today instead of tomorrow. Apparently he’s leaving the country for a month and had to up his flight.

MICHAELWell, that’s one big fish of a client.

Michael pantomimes pulling a fish in on a rod.

MICHAEL (CONT’D)Reel that baby in! I’ll have Pam reschedule the rest of your appointments.

PHYLLISOh, I didn’t have any others...

DWIGHT--She was leaving early today anyway.

MICHAELDon’t interrupt.

(to Phyllis)Wait. You were? What for?

PHYLLISMy niece’s elementary school career day is at two.

MICHAELWe’re you supposed to speak or something?

PHYLLISI’ve already called and canceled.

MICHAELWell, that’s no good. We don’t want to disappoint the kids.

PHYLLISReally?

6.

Page 10: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

MICHAELOf course not...I’ll go.

PHYLLISNo Michael, you really don’t have to.

MICHAELOf course I don’t have to. I want to. You know...for the kids. They’ll love me.

Everyone grows quiet. Phyllis opens her mouth to speak but...

MICHAEL (CONT’D)They’ll love me.

MICHAEL TALKING HEAD

MICHAELLook, when it comes to kids, I’m great. I’m like a...friendly Uncle...but not too friendly. Besides, it will be nice to visit my old Alma Mater.

PHYLLIS TALKING HEAD - PHYLLIS’S DESK

Phyllis is putting on her coat- preparing to leave.

PHYLLISYes, we went to school together. In fact my first memory of Michael was him speaking in front of children. He was in the school play and when his part finally came he...

Phyllis breaks into a smile, which she tries to hide.

PHYLLIS (CONT’D)...I better go.

Phyllis, still all smiles, walks towards the exit.

Dwight, who’s been listening in, revolves in his seat and watches Phyllis leave.

INT. THE OFFICE - BREAK ROOM - LATER

Dwight stands by Michael, who’s stirring creamer into his coffee.

7.

Page 11: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

MICHAELNothing Dwight. I don’t know what she’s talking about.

DWIGHTAre you sure? She seemed to think it was rather funny.

MICHAELWell I...look, what’s it matter to you anyway?

DWIGHTWhat was the school play?

MICHAELWhat?

DWIGHTThe play.

MICHAEL“The Ugly Duckling.”

DWIGHTAnd you were...

MICHAEL--The ugly duckling...I was the ugly duckling.

Dwight studies Michael’s face.

DWIGHTHmmm...I can see it.

MICHAELLook, is there a reason you’re bugging me?

DWIGHTI was wondering if I could join you on your school visit.

MICHAELAnd why?

DWIGHTI would like to see the place that first molded you into the man you are today.

Michael grins and takes a sip of his coffee.

8.

Page 12: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

MICHAELAlright then. You may join me.

DWIGHT TALKING HEAD

DWIGHTI’ve actually never been in a real elementary school before. I did go to public middle school, but, before that, I was taught at home. I know that may come as a surprise.

INT. THE OFFICE - ANDY’S DESK - LATER

Jim leans on Andy’s desk while Andy sits in deep thought.

ANDYHmmmm...that’s a tough one there tuna. You’re looking for an expensive restaurant...

JIMI didn’t say expensive. I said good.

ANDYNow, is there a difference? Really?

JIMYeah...there’s a difference.

Jim looks over at Stanley, who is working at his desk.

JIM (CONT’D)Stanley, any ideas?

STANLEYNo.

Michael and Dwight walk out of Michael’s office with their coats on. Michael has his briefcase.

MICHAELAlright, attention everybody, Dwight and I are heading out to Scranton South Elementary for the rest of the afternoon as I will be speaking at a classroom career day.

PAMMichael it’s eleven-thirty. That doesn’t start till two.

9.

Page 13: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

MICHAELI realize that, but I’ve got to stop by thee old abode and pick up a few props.

Pam and Jim share a look.

JIMWhat sort of props?

MICHAELNow, that would be giving away the secret wouldn’t it?

DWIGHTMichael will bring what is necessary to both entertain and inspire the children.

MICHAELExactly. I’ll be a modern day George Carlin.

ANDYGeorge Carlin?

MICHAELWhen he was the conductor on Shining Time Station...you know...

Andy shakes his head.

MICHAEL (CONT’D)Well, he was very good. Different from the “Seven Words You Can’t Say” Carlin but kids don’t get that bit anyway...believe me. Anywho, we are off! Have a good afternoon Dunder Mifflin!

Michael and Dwight exit.

MICHAEL (V.O.) (CONT’D)This morning, I was simply regional manager of the Dunder Mifflin Scranton branch...

MICHAEL TALKING HEAD

MICHAEL...This afternoon I’ll be someone a group of kids will never forget...much like Sloth to the Goonies...though less gross.

10.

Page 14: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

INT. DWIGHT’S CAR - LATER

Dwight drives as Michael sits in the passenger seat.

The radio is on and Dwight plays with the volume.

Michael slaps his hand away.

MICHAELLeave it. I like this song.

DWIGHTSo when’s the last time you saw your old elementary?

MICHAELOh, gosh it’s been forever. So many memories. I used to play kickball at recess everyday.

DWIGHTWhat position?

MICHAELAll of them.

DWIGHTSchool athlete huh?

MICHAELNo...I just was the only one playing.

Things get quiet and Dwight drives on.

DWIGHT TALKING HEAD - IN FRONT OF MICHAEL’S HOUSE

Dwight stands by the car.

DWIGHTWhen I was home schooled we did have an hour of recreation every day. It was called Dwight and Mose’s fun time hour.

(smiles)Many days Mose would let the dogs off their chains and time how long I could keep them from clawing me to the ground...good times.

Michael exits his house holding a gym bag.

MICHAELAlright, let’s roll.

11.

Page 15: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

Dwight gets back into the driver’s seat.

INT. THE OFFICE - JIM’S DESK - LATER

Jim sits at his desk, browsing a website entitled “Best Restaurants in Scranton.”

He gazes at the list of restaurants, writes one down, and moves to...

PAM’S DESK

...where she gives him a welcomed smile.

JIMSambuca Grill.

PAMOn my Mom’s birthday.

Jim lets his head fall to Pam’s desk.

PAM TALKING HEAD

PAMI’ll admit he’s trying.

(grins)It’s kinda cute.

EXT. SCRANTON SOUTH ELEMENTARY - LATER

The U.S. flag waves out front of the old but well maintained school as young students play and laugh nearby during recess.

INT. SCRANTON SOUTH ELEMENTARY - HALLWAY - CONTINUOUS

Michael and Dwight saunter past classrooms, taking it all in.

DWIGHTSo what’s it like being back?

MICHAELI remember this place being a whole lot bigger.

DWIGHTProbably the foundation sinking. This all used to be marshland.

From down the hall, JOE MACINTOSH, janitor, late 60’s, walks with a mop. He moves towards Dwight and Michael.

MICHAELOh my god, its Janitor Joe.

12.

Page 16: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

DWIGHTWho?

MICHAELJanitor Joe! He’s been here forever.

Joe crosses paths with Dwight and Michael.

DWIGHTExcuse me.

JOEYeah?

DWIGHT(pointing to Michael)

Do you remember this man?

JOEShould I?

Michael holds out his hand.

MICHAELHello, Michael Scott. I went here a long time ago.

Joe shakes Michael’s hand and his eyes brighten.

JOEOh yeah! Little Mickey Scott.

MICHAELGuilty as charged!

JOEYou were in that play.

DWIGHTThe Ugly Duckling?

JOEThat’s the one!

The three chuckle.

JOE (CONT’D)But then you crapped your pants on stage.

Michael and Dwight stop chuckling and stare at each other.

ACT 2

INT. THE OFFICE - KELLY’S DESK - LATER

KELLY sits at her desk working. Jim walks up.

JIMHey Kelly.

KELLYWhat’s up?

JIMYou wouldn’t know of any good restaurants in town would you?

KELLYOh gosh tons. Ever since Ryan broke up with me I’ve been out every night.

JIMReally?

Kelly looks at the camera.

KELLYYes...every night.

(to Jim)How about The Colosseum or maybe Club 17?

JIMI don’t think Pam want’s to go to a nightclub.

KELLYWhat about Tiger’s?

JIMIsn’t that a singles bar?

Kelly looks back at the camera.

KELLYYes it is.

KELLY TALKING HEAD

KELLYI’ve been bringing home boys like stray puppies.

INT. SCRANTON SOUTH ELEMENTARY - HALLWAY - LATER

A GROUP of CHILDREN rush out to recess as Michael and Dwight walk the opposite way, approaching a classroom.

DWIGHT236. Here’s the classroom.

Dwight and Michael enter the...

CLASSROOM

...which is decorated for a 3rd grade class. No one else seems around.

DWIGHTThey must be out to recess.

MICHAELI guess.

Awkward silence falls over the coworkers. Finally...

DWIGHTMichael I...

MICHAEL--Dwight, we are not discussing it!

DWIGHTBut, what happened? Why did you defecate in front of your peers?

MICHAELDon’t say defecate! That makes it even worse.

DWIGHTBut then what happ...

MICHAEL--Fine! God!

(beat)We were putting on The Ugly Duckling and I was super prepared, all my lines memorized, but the moment I got center stage I froze and....

DWIGHT--and?

KELLY (CONT'D)

Page 19: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

From the doorway, MISS. AMANDA TUCKER, a pretty 42, walks in.

MICHAEL--and pooped myself Dwight! I pooped myself!

Michael and Dwight notice Amanda.

AMANDAHello.

MICHAEL(nonchalant)

Heeeey.

AMANDAAre you two here for the Career Day?

DWIGHTYes. This is Michael Scott, Regional Manager of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company Scranton and I’m Dwight K. Shrute, Assistant Regional Manager.

MICHAELTo the Regional Manager...

AMANDA--Michael?

Michael looks at Amanda but can’t place it.

AMANDA (CONT’D)Amanda Tucker!

Michael remembers.

MICHAELOh my God! Mandy Tucker!

AMANDAHow have you been?

MICHAELGood! Just super. As Dwight here said Regional Manager over at Dunder Mifflin. And you! What are you doing with yourself?

16.

Page 20: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

MICHAELReally? Where?

Amanda points to the ground.

AMANDAHere.

MICHAELOh....

MICHAEL TALKING HEAD

MICHAELYes, Amanda and I go way back. When we went to this very school she was the popular pretty girl. All the boys had crushes on her...probably cause she was the first to grow boobs.

INT. AMANDA’S CLASSROOM - MOMENTS LATER

Michael’s eyes drift to Amanda’s chest as she talks.

AMANDA(to Dwight)

Yeah, we were in the same class 3rd and 4th grade and then I think we shared a study period in high school.

(to Michael)Is that right?

Michael’s eyes snap back to Amanda’s face.

MICHAELHuh? What?...oh yeah.

AMANDANot to mention cheerleading.

DWIGHTCheerleading?

MICHAELIt was a phase.

Amanda’s watch sounds. She looks at the time and turns off the alarm.

17.

Page 21: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

AMANDAOh, I’ve got to go help end recess. We’ll be ready to start in about twenty minutes so you’re more than welcome to wait in the teacher’s lounge with the rest of the presenters if you’d like.

DWIGHTWe can go into the teacher’s lounge?

AMANDAYeah.

Dwight smiles, overly excited.

DWIGHTFantastic.

Amanda gives a uncomfortable grin and exits.

DWIGHT (CONT’D)(to Michael)

Did you hear that? The teacher’s lounge.

MICHAELYeah, I heard...I heard.

Michael looks somewhat anxiously at the camera.

MICHAEL TALKING HEAD

MICHAELDid I like Amanda back in school? Sure. I asked her out a few times but there was always something else she was doing. Volleyball practice...Girl Scouts...laundry. There was always something.

INT. THE OFFICE - MEREDITH AND CREED’S DESKS - LATER

Jim looks over at Pam working at her desk while MEREDITH and CREED sit working.

MEREDITHGee...and Kelly already said Tiger’s?

Jim looks to Meredith.

18.

Page 22: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

JIMYep.

MEREDITHHmmm...I do know of this one bar and grill.

JIMHow’s the food?

MEREDITHOh...I have no idea.

CREEDYou could try the Seven Loaves Soup Kitchen. I go there all the time.

JIMBut that’s for homeless peop...

Creed looks genuine about his suggestion.

JIM (CONT’D)Thanks a lot guys.

Jim exits.

INT. SCRANTON SOUTH ELEMENTARY - TEACHER’S LOUNGE - LATER

Michael and Dwight sit on a sofa, quietly waiting. A few other PRESENTERS are seated around them. Michael still looks nervous while Dwight eyes the room.

DWIGHTWell this is a big let down.

(looks at Michael)Are you okay?

MICHAELWhat? Sure....yeah.

DWIGHTAre you sure?

MICHAELSure I’m sure.

DWIGHTYou’re not nervous are you?

MICHAELMaybe...a little...with all the kids...and Mandy...and...maybe a little...

19.

Page 23: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

Michael simmers in his seat as Dwight watches.

DWIGHTI have some adult diapers in the car if you want one.

MICHAEL(loud whisper)

What!

DWIGHT TALKING HEAD

DWIGHTI don’t believe in rest stops.

INT. TEACHER’S LOUNGE - MOMENTS LATER

DWIGHTAre you sure?

MICHAELYes I’m very sure.

DWIGHTBecause if you change your mind...

MICHAEL--Dwight! I don’t want a diaper!

Several presenters look over at Michael and Dwight, who grow quiet.

DERRICK (O.S.)Michael Scott?

Michael turns to see DERRICK MCCARTY, 40’s, very athletic standing in the corner of the room, holding a canvas bag.

MICHAELYes?

Derrick chuckles happily.

DERRICKI thought it was you.

MICHAELI’m sorry?...

Derrick offers his hand to Dwight.

DERRICKDerrick McCarty.

20.

Page 24: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

Michael’s eyes go wide.

MICHAEL TALKING HEAD

MICHAEL(agitated)

Oh, I remember Derrick McCarty. Back in school he was the best...at basketball, football...recess...he did just about everything, which in high school included the cheerleading squad...minus me of course.

INT. TEACHER’S LOUNGE - MOMENTS LATER

DERRICK(to Michael)

Regional Manager huh? Well that’s...something.

MICHAELYeah, it sure is.

DWIGHTAnd what do you do?

DERRICKOh, I own a exercise chain on the east side of town, Fitness Stop.

DWIGHTNice.

DERRICKBut today I’m here to talk about this.

Derrick opens his bag and pulls out a firefighter helmet.

DWIGHTAwesome.

DERRICKYep.

Derrick points to Michael’s gym bag, which Dwight still holds.

DERRICK (CONT’D)What do ya have in yours?

Dwight begins to unzip the bag but Michael grabs it.

21.

Page 25: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

MICHAELNothing...wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise.

MICHAEL TALKING HEAD

MICHAELI don’t see what the big deal is. Anybody can be a volunteer fireman. All you have to do is volunteer. And it’s not like you’re the one actually taking out the fire...that’s water’s job. Derrick’s just takes credit for what water does.

INT. THE OFFICE - OSCAR, ANGELA, AND KEVIN’S DESKS - LATER

Jim stands as OSCAR, ANGELA, and KEVIN sit working.

KEVIN(slowly)

Hmmmmmm....there’s Jackson’s Pub...O’Conolley’s...the Rusty Dog...Phil’s Diner...the Sunlight Cafe...Mitchell’s...Paul’s Pizza...Don Paco’s...

JIM--Wait, are there any restaurants that we shouldn’t go to?

KEVINNot that I can think of.

ANGELAHow about Chili’s?

OSCARPam was banned after the Dundies, remember?

ANGELAYes...yes I do.

Angela gives Jim a judgmental look.

OSCAR(to Jim)

Valentine’s on 5th has a great chicken dinner.

KEVINBut...that’s a gay bar.

22.

Page 26: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

Oscar fidgets with his pencil.

OSCARYeah...I suppose it is.

Oscar looks over at Angela, who glares back.

INT. SCRANTON SOUTH ELEMENTARY - HALLWAY

Michael, Dwight, Derrick, and the rest of the presenters walk down the hallway, coming up on Amanda’s room.

Amanda peeks her head out of her classroom and spots Derrick. He waves and she runs up to him.

AMANDAOh my god! Derrick McCarty!

DERRICKHow are ya Mandy?

AMANDAFantastic now! So good to see you!

They laugh and hug. Michael doesn’t look too enthused.

AMANDA (CONT’D)I didn’t know you were coming?

DERRICKLisa Shipman asked me to.

AMANDAWell, how do you know little Lisa?

DERRICKRemember that house fire she was in six months back?

Amanda’s eyes widen in admiration.

AMANDAThat was you!

DERRICKHad to bust through a kitchen wall with my right shoulder but I got her out. Still a bit tender.

Derrick massages his shoulder and Michael rolls his eyes.

AMANDAWow, that’s incredible.

23.

Page 27: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

DERRICKOh, it was nothing. Since then the Shipman’s have asked me to be her Godfather so...here I am.

Amanda smiles at him.

AMANDASo here you are...

MICHAEL(doing Marlon Brando)

It was an offer he couldn’t refuse.

Michael chuckles but Amanda and Derrick say nothing.

MICHAEL (CONT’D)The Godfather...

AMANDAYeah...I got it...

(to the group)Okay everyone, why don’t you all come in and we’ll get started.

Amanda leads Derrick and the rest of the presenters into the classroom, only leaving Michael and Dwight in the hallway.

Michael looks into the classroom at all the kids sitting at their desks. His brow begins to sweat.

DWIGHTAre you alright chief?

Michael turns back, walking quickly back down the hallway. Dwight catches up to him.

DWIGHT (CONT’D)Where are we going?

MICHAELTo get something from the car.

INT. THE OFFICE - JIM’S DESK - LATER

Jim sits at his desk pouring over a yellow book.

From her desk, Pam watches, sympathetically.

PAM (V.O.)Hey, can I talk to you for a minute?

24.

Page 28: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

INT. THE OFFICE - THE ELEVATOR - LATER

Jim stands by the elevator and Pam has just walked up.

JIMYeah, sure. What’s up?

PAMLook, about dinner tonight...

JIM--Don’t worry, I’ve got a few places in mind. I’ve just got to...

PAM--That’s what I want to talk to you about. I know your trying real hard to make tonight special and I appreciate it, I really do. But I just want you to know that all I want is to go somewhere we haven’t been and, good or not, I’ll have a great time because I’m with you. Okay?

JIMOkay.

Pam gives Jim a kiss on the cheek and grins back.

The PHONE RINGS at Pam’s desk.

PAMI better get that.

JIMAlright.

Pam exits back to her desk.

Jim watches her go and then turns to the elevator as it DINGS, opening on Kevin who’s eating a deli sub. Kevin exits the elevator but notices Jim staring at him.

KEVINWhat?

JIMNothing.

Kevin enters the Office and Jim’s gaze follows him, until finally looking back at the elevator.

ACT 3

INT. SCRANTON SOUTH ELEMENTARY - AMANDA’S CLASSROOM - LATER

AMANDA’S STUDENTS sit watching JAMES DONOVAN, an architect, who holds a large blue print up in front of the class.

JAMESSo after all that hard work, we are able to have a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the creation of a brand new building.

Michael, as nervous as ever, stands with the rest of the presenters at the side of the room. He fidgets his legs uncomfortably as his pants now bulge a bit more than before.

JAMES (CONT’D)And that’s how we go from this drawing to this.

James moves the blueprint revealing a large portrait of a building, sitting on a stand.

The students clap for James and Amanda comes to the front.

AMANDAThank you so much Mr. Donovan. Okay, now we’ve got two presenters left. Who would like to go next? Michael? Derrick?

Michael and Derrick look at each other, unsure.

AMANDA (CONT’D)Why don’t we have Michael go next. Best for last and all.

Derrick chuckles and holds up his fire fighter hat. The kids ooo and ahh at Derrick, ignoring Michael as he approaches the front.

Michael clears his throat loudly and the students face the front once again.

Michael looks down and exhales a large breath, preparing for his speech. Finally, he looks back up at the students.

MICHAEL(singing)

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor, would you be mine, could you be mine?

26.

Page 30: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

Michael takes off his suit coat and hands it to Dwight, who pulls a cardigan from the gym bag and hands it to Michael.

MICHAEL (CONT’D)(singing)

It’s a neighborly day in this beauty wood, a neighborly day for a beauty, would you be mine, could you be mine?

Michael begins to take off his shoes.

MICHAEL (CONT’D)(singing)

I’ve always wanted to have a neighbor just like you, I’ve always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.

Dwight pulls a pair of sneakers from the bag and throws them to Michael, who catches them and starts putting them on.

MICHAEL (CONT’D)(singing)

So, let’s make the most of this beautiful day, since we’re together we might as well say, would you be mine, could you be mine, won’t you be my neighbor. Won’t you please, won’t you please, please won’t you be...my neighbor.

Michael finishes in a pose, now in sweater and sneakers. The room remains silent and stunned.

MICHAEL (CONT’D)Hello children...I am Michael Scott, Regional Manager of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company Scranton, which, as you might have guessed, means I sell one of the most important things in the world...paper.

Dwight pulls a wrapped stack of paper from the bag and tosses it to Michael, who opens it and pulls out a piece.

MICHAEL (CONT’D)(trying to excite)

Oooo, you see? Pretty cool huh?

Michael hands the paper to a student in the front row.

27.

MICHAEL (CONT’D)You can pass that around.

The student looks at the paper, slightly confused, and passes it to the student next to him.

MICHAEL (CONT’D)(to the class)

Now, there are many different types of paper that we sell at Dunder Mifflin, first we have...

A GIRL’S hand goes up.

MICHAEL (CONT’D)Yes, do you have a question?

GIRLI’m bored.

MICHAELWhat?

GIRLI’m bored.

MICHAELOkay...well, I don’t know...

A TOUGH BOY, sitting next to the girl, fidgets in his seat.

TOUGH BOYWhen is the firefighter going to talk?

Students begin to nod in agreement.

STUDENTSYeah...the firefighter. We want the firefighter.

TOUGH BOYFirefighter! Firefighter!

STUDENTSFirefighter! Firefighter!

MICHAELOkay! Okay! Okay!

The students quiet down.

MICHAEL (CONT’D)So you guys aren't interested in paper?

The students shake their heads.

MICHAEL (CONT’D)Well...that just means, you don’t know how special paper is.

Michael grabs a few pieces of paper from the stack and begins folding them together, hiding his work with his hands.

MICHAEL (CONT’D)You see, at first, paper may just be rather plain and boring, not much to look at, but, with a little bit of magic...sometimes...you can create something pretty cool.

Michael brings his hands up, now holding an Origami swan.

The kids begin to ooo and ahh, suddenly captivated.

Michael pulls on the back of the swan and the wings move.

The kids all gasp in amazement.

MICHAEL TALKING HEAD

MICHAELYou don’t work in the paper business as long as I have without learning a thing or two about the ancient Chinese art of Origami.

Michael bows, his hands together like some Kung-Fu master.

INT. AMANDA’S CLASSROOM - LATER

The presentations are over and many of the kids now hold little Origami swans. A few sit with Derrick and try on his hat, including Dwight.

Michael simply stands at the back of the classroom, happily watching. Amanda approaches.

AMANDAHey, that was quite a turn around you pulled there.

Page 33: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

MICHAELOh, it was nothing. Kids are easy. It’s adults I usually have trouble with.

Amanda and Michael chuckle at his joke.

AMANDAWell, you certainly impressed this one.

(she smiles)Thanks again for coming.

MICHAELSure.

Amanda begins to walk away.

MICHAEL (CONT’D)Oh, hey...

Amanda turns back to Michael.

MICHAEL (CONT’D)I was wondering, if your not busy, would you like to get a drink or something sometime? You know...catch up?

Amanda lets out an awkward sigh.

AMANDAOh Michael, I would love to but...

Amanda holds up her right hand, showing off a ring.

AMANDA (CONT’D)...I’m engaged.

MICHAEL TALKING HEAD

MICHAEL(annoyed)

There’s always something.

Pam waves.

PAMBye!

Kelly moves to the elevator but there is a “Out of Order” sign taped to it’s doors. Kelly takes the stairs.

SERIES OF SHOTS - PAM WORKS LATE

-- Pam copies several reports.

-- Pam organizes several stacks of paper.

-- Pam puts more paper in the printer and it restarts.

INT. THE OFFICE - PAM’S DESK - EVENING

Pam faxes a final piece of paper as she holds her cell phone up to her ear with one hand and tries putting on her coat with the other.

The phone rings and then picks up.

JIM (V.O.)Hello?

PAMHey you.

JIM (V.O.)Hey you. You finishing up?

Pam gets her coat all the way on, grabs her purse, and heads for the exit.

PAMYep, just faxed the last one.

JIM (V.O.)Awesome. Do you want me to pick you up now?

PAM Sure. That'll be great. Did you end up picking a restaurant?

Pam moves to the elevator, now with “Out of Order” sign gone.

JIM (V.O.)Actually, I did and I don’t think we’ve ever eaten there.

31.

Page 35: The Office Spec Script - Career Day

PAMReally?

Pam hits the elevators call button and the doors open.

Inside, Jim sits, his phone still to his ear, at a fully set candlelit table with plates of spaghetti and glasses of wine.

Pam puts her hand over her mouth in surprise.

Jim puts his foot into the elevator’s path to keep it from closing and shuts his phone, putting it in his pocket.

JIMI hope you don’t mind. I already ordered for us.

Pam, smiling from ear to ear, moves into the elevator and sits in the chair opposite Jim.

Jim pulls a remote from his pocket and turns on a stereo, which sits in the corner of the elevator. Quiet piano jazz begins to play.

Jim picks up his glass of wine and holds it up for a toast.

Pam picks up her glass and holds it up as well.

As they clink their glasses, Jim lets his foot leave the elevator’s path and the doors close.
