Interschool vs Woodleigh We couldn’t have asked for better weather last Friday when we hosted Woodleigh School in our third inter school fixture this term. This was easily the largest exchange we have been involved with, over 200 Year 5 & 6 children participating in a range of sports; rugby, netball, football, hockey, basketball & chess. Although we won only the football A game and drew the football B game, the effort and sportsmanship exhibited by all competitors was exemplary. Thank you to those who came and supported the children and a special mention to Rebecca Brown, Josh Williams and Eddie Brown who assisted with the coaching, warming up or managing of teams.

Written by Glynn Hills A huge thank you is extended to our Ranginui teachers for the way in which the interschool was run and the wonderful atmosphere created here is testament to your organisation and passion of getting all students involved.

CYBER SAFETY - Tuesday 27 June – 6.30pm. Highlands Intermediate Many of our children are actively involved or will be in the future with Instagram, Facebook and a variety of other online communication tools. The way these tools are used is not always positive. On the 27th Highlands Intermediate staff will be sharing what they are seeing here at Highlands school, and looking at how we can work together so that we can keep our children safe when communicating online. The focus will be on - How screen processing runs the risk of forming very inaccurate perceptions. - The addictive nature of social media communications and implications for mental health - The need for mentoring and controls by

parents to walk through challenging processes. For the first session we have Mike Scadden (http://www.brainstems.co.nz/) speaking. Mike has been heavily involved in education and has completed a Masters in how the brain functions, how kids learn, and how this impacts on their well being He is an engaging speaker and is actively involved in working with kids, and schools re the pressures of cyber, their mental health, and their well being Just a gold coin donation to get in - There will be many parents dealing with this stuff and there will be many who will not even aware of what is going on with their kids. We would love to see you all there as we work together to keep our children safe when online. Winter Holiday ART Program at The Art Club! Your local store will be hosting free workshops at 11am on Thursday 13 & 20 July. The sessions will introduce children to the skills they need to be a nurturing pet owner. This school holidays the focus will be on teaching children on the essentials on

caring for fish or reptiles including how much to feed them, how to decorate and maintain their housing and the signs of a happy and healthy pet! Answering all of those scaly questions such as “Do fish sleep?”, “How do I hold a lizard?”, the workshops will include interactive activities - face painting, activity booklets and a colouring-in competition. There will also be the opportunity to ask the in-store experts for advice, and children who complete the workshop will take home a certificate at the end to proudly display on their wall or fridge. Although bookings aren’t necessary, the events are usually well attended so it’s advisable to arrive early. With best wishes,

Your local Animates team.
