2 THE OBAMA
Our investment in historic Old Redford demonstrates our commitment to supporting local entrepreneurs, providing affordable housing, and creating places that benefit all Detroiters.
The Obama building is a historic renovation located at the corner of Grand River and Lahser in Northwest Detroit’s Old Redford neighborhood. It includes the rehab of eight ground floor retail spaces and the addition of four second floor loft apartments. Retail and residential units will be available at affordable lease rates. The project will support neighborhood retail and local entrepreneurs, contributing to the surrounding small business community.
Located in a City of Detroit Strategic Neighborhood, The Obama is the result of a public-private partnership that includes the City of Detroit, Invest Detroit, Michigan Economic Development Corporation, Horizon Bank and the Fisher Foundation. It is the first phase of an incremental development at the intersection of Grand River and Lahser in Old Redford. Phase two is an arts center at the Sunflower Building. Together, the projects aim to catalyze larger neighborhood revitalization.

The Redford Theatre
Built in 1928, the Redford Theatre is a historically designated movie palace with regular movie showtimes Fridays and Saturdays. The 30,000-square-foot theatre holds 1,600 guests and features a three-story grand foyer, full-size stage and Japanese motif. Built when silent films were still produced, the theatre was equipped with a Barton organ, one of the only original theatre organs in metro Detroit, that is played 30 minutes before each show.
Motor City Java House
Motor City Java & Tea House is a neighborhood coffee shop in the Old Redford district in northwest Detroit. A cozy, comfortable, and peaceful place nestled in the Artist Village, Java & Tea House is open daily for breakfast and lunch serving up coffee, smoothies, soups, sandwiches and desserts. Patron pastimes include reading, playing chess and enjoying spoken word.
Meijer Grocery + Gas Station
Meijer is a privately-owned and family run Midwestern retailer offering fresh groceries, housewares, apparel, sporting goods, electronics and more. The 190,000-square-foot Redford super-center includes a pharmacy, bakery, deli and gas station. Committed to the community, Meijer donates more than 6 percent of net profit to local charities each year and each store employs approximately 300 full- and part-time team members.
Sweet Potato Sensations
Sweet Potato Sensations, started by newlyweds Jeffery and Cassandra Thomas in 1976, has become an iconic Detroit bakery and diner. Sweet Potato Sensations serves up sweet treats like pies, cakes, cookies, cheesecake, cobbler and ice cream, and also savory menu items including hickory smoked turkey, salmon croquettes and collard green soup. A sweet potato lover’s heaven on earth!
The Artist Village
The Artist Village serves as a creative hub for artists, students, business owners, and neighbors living and working in the heart of Old Redford. A once abandoned commercial center serves as the center of the village where live music, poetry jams, art camps and community events are offered throughout the year in buildings adorned with murals. The Village also includes the Redford Theatre, a coffee shop and other local retailers.
Detroit Public Library
The Detroit Public Library (DPL) opened in 1865 as a 5,000-book collection located in one room of the old Capitol High School on Griswold Street. Today, DPL has 21 location throughout Detroit with a collection of more than seven million books. The Redford branch library offers computer classes, career services, book clubs, children’s programs and more.
