Thought for the Week You can't sow an apple seed and expect to
get an avocado tree. The consequences of
your life are sown in what you do and how you
behave.

ALEXANDRA DYER 3P
Congratulations to Alexandra for an awesome start
to school, and setting such a terrific example to the
rest of the school
Over the years the staff at our school have
worked hard to develop and implement fair, reasonable and effective student discipline
and welfare strategies and policies.
One of the most difficult aspects of a positive approach to student discipline is the notion of
consequences. There are two types of consequences – ‘natural’ and ‘logical’. Young
children often learn very quickly from ‘natural consequences’. An example of this is when a
young child learns not to touch a heater after
burning their hand on one. The problem with natural consequences of course is that they
can cause great harm.
Logical consequences are basically when we
try to make the ‘punishment’ fit the ‘crime’. So for example, if a student does not finish work
due to talking too much, they may need to complete it at a recess or for homework. Encouraging children to make appropriate
choices is an important part of this. ‘If you do this then that will happen’. They need to learn
that their behaviours and the choices they make have consequences - some good and some not so good.
It is sometimes difficult for a teacher to come up with a logical consequence for a student’s
misbehaviour. A number of years ago we
scrapped our ‘time out’ room mainly for the
reason that detention was not appropriate for every behaviour. If a child persisted in leaning
back on a chair for example, they may have
received a detention. This didn’t make sense;
The Oak Leaf
Oak Park Primary School is committed to providing a safe and positive environment based on
mutual respect and active lifelong learning.

far better to give the student the choice of
sitting on the chair properly or having the chair removed.
We are currently investigating an approach
implemented in some schools called ‘School Wide Positive Behaviours (SWPB). In this approach, we consider the agreed school
values and identify the positive behaviours we
would like to see in students (everyone really).
We think about these positive behaviours and how they might look in different settings – the
schoolgrounds, the classroom, on excursions, camps etc. A matrix is developed which
summarises the SWPB and makes it easy for everyone to understand the behaviours that
we think are important. The behaviours would
also be linked to our WOW Awards. More information will follow as we develop this
further.
Attitudes to School Survey
WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY
THINK!
Our school is conducting a survey to find out
what your child thinks of our school. The
Attitudes to School survey is an annual survey
for Years 5 to 12 students offered by the
Department of Education and Early Childhood
Development. It is designed to assist schools in
gaining an understanding of students'
perceptions and experience of school. Our
school will use the survey results to plan
programs and activities to improve your child's
experience at school.
Students in Years 5 and 6 will participate in this
year’s survey. All responses to the survey are
anonymous. This year the Attitudes to School
survey will be conducted at our school over the
period Monday 20th April to Friday 1st May. The
survey only takes 20-30 minutes to complete
and occurs during your child's class time.
The survey results will be reported back to the
school at the end of July. Last year we used
the survey results to plan initiatives and address
issues that link back to main messages from the
2014 survey.
Please speak to your child’s teacher if you
would like more information.
Ride to School Day Tomorrow, Friday 4th March is National Ride to
School Day! Parents, teachers and students are
encouraged to ride their bikes or scooters and
commute safely to school. Ride to School Day is
an initiative that encourages students to arrive
at school by using physical activity rather than
being driven. Being allowed to actively travel
helps build a child’s independence, social skills
and increases physical activity. If riding to
school is not an option, students are
encouraged to also walk to school.
We hope you can all join us by riding, scooting
or walking to school on Friday 4th March.

Maribyrnong Sports
Academy
Students who are high-performing athletes in at
least one sport, may apply to Maribyrnong Sports
Academy for Year 7-2017. While many Grade 6
students “love all sports”, the Sports Academy
program is seeking student-athletes whose
general fitness level plus their achievements and
skill levels in their main sport are above the
average level of their 11-12 year old
peers. Parents are asked to submit evidence of
their child’s sporting achievements plus school
reports with the application.
The due date for submission is Monday 18 April
2016. Fitness testing and selection trials with our
coaches will be scheduled during Term 2, as well
as a test for our ACE academic enrichment
program. Sports Academy places will be offered
in late May 2016 before Education Department’s
“Application for Year 7 Placement” is due to be
returned to your school by families of your Grade
6 students.
