The ORE Project
• Project under umbrella of Open Archives Initiative– October 2006/September 2008
• Supported by Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with additional support from National Science Foundation & Microsoft
• International participation– Coordinators: Carl Lagoze (Cornell) & Herbert Van de
Sompel (LANL Research Lib)– Advisory Committee (16): strategic guidance– Technical Committee (14): the work!
• “Editorial SubGroup” (6)
– Liaison Group (9): linkage with similar activities
12 February 2008JISC CETIS Metadata & Digital Repositories SIG meeting, London 5
The ORE Project
• “ORE will develop specifications that allow distributed repositories to exchange information about their constituent digital objects”
– “Digital objects” as compound, composite (etc)– e.g. multi-page doc, image set, set of doc + data,
reading list etc – Identified bounded aggregations of related
information units that form a logical whole
• How does provider encode/disclose descriptions of aggregations?
• How does consumer discover/interpret descriptions of aggregations?
• Set of alpha specifications released Dec 2007

The ORE alpha specs

ORE alpha Specifications
• Based on work of ORE Technical Committee– Authored by “editorial subgroup”
• Public alpha release December 2007– Comments to oai-ore Google Group
• Six documents– Abstract Data Model (and Overview)– Resource Map Profile of Atom (and Overview)– Vocabulary– Resource Map Discovery
• Generally, aim at lightweight, widely-applicable approach
– specify minimum necessary that is useful
12 February 2008JISC CETIS Metadata & Digital Repositories SIG meeting, London 8
ORE Abstract Data Model
• Builds on principles of– Architecture of World Wide Web – Resource Description Framework (RDF)– Named Graphs
• Web Arch– Resource-oriented view of problem space– Use of URIs as globally-scoped resource identifiers– Uniform interface– Exchange of information about resource state (representations)– Hypermedia: representations provide more URIs
• RDF– Description of typed relationships between resources using RDF
triples– Graph as set of triples
• Named Graph– RDF graph is resource which can be named (by URI)

ORE Resource Map
• Named RDF Graph• Must express
– Relationship between Resource Map and Aggregation– Relationships between Aggregation and Aggregated Resources– Basic metadata about Resource Map
• May express– Additional metadata about Resource Map– Metadata about Aggregation, relationships w other resources– Metadata about Aggregated Resources, relationships w other
resources
• Small RDF vocabulary defined by ORE• “Aggregation Graph” as formally defined subgraph of
Resource Map

Other ORE documents
• Resource Map Profile of Atom– Profile of Atom Syndication Format
– Supports subset of Resource Map features
– GRDDL-able i.e. mapping to RDF/XML via XSLT
– Currently only serialisation format specified by alpha specs
– beta specs will (probably!) include guidelines for RDF syntaxes
• Resource Map Discovery– Conventions for disclosure of Resource Maps
• OAI-PMH, sitemaps etc
• Links from representations of Aggregated Resources to Resource Map etc

Current/upcoming events/activities
• ORE TC currently preparing next versions of specs• USA Open meeting
– 3 March, John Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD• European Open meeting
– 4 April, Univ of Southampton (post-OR2008)• Implementation/experimentation projects
– Mellon Foundation• Michael Nelson, Old Dominion University• Tim Cole, Univ of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
– JISC• tbc!
– Others e.g. ORE Chem• ORE TC response to comments• Version 1 specs by September 2008

ORE in short
• A Webby approach to “compound objects”, simple part-whole relationships…
• …built on a resource-oriented perspective
• Simple but extensible
• Relationship with e.g. IMS CP, METS, DIDL?
• Seed of a more resource-oriented approach to “repository”?http://www.openarchives.org/ore/
