EMPOWERED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT, UNITED TO SERVE
January 2020
Here’s my New Year’s confession:
My first steps down the road to ordained ministry
were probably not take for the right reasons.
The year was 1992.
I was working for my alma mater, St. Olaf College, as an admissions counselor,
and one my employee benefits was that I could take one class a semester for free.
So I took Greek…at 7:00 am…for three semesters.
But I wasn’t really taking it because my heart was set on seminary at that point.
I was taking it because I’d grown up in a denomination that told me that the Bible
had different expectations for men and women, particularly when it came to ministry roles,
and I’d decided that I wasn’t going to believe that until I’d read it for myself,
in the original Greek.
So I slogged through those early morning classes.
I carried flash cards in my pocket during the workday so I could memorize vocabulary.
And at night I sat at my kitchen table working on translations until the wee hours.
But St. Olaf only offered Classical Greek,
not the variation of the language that our New Testament was written in.
So for the first two semesters I did nothing but translate Classical Greek poetry…
not a bit of the scripture that I wondered about.
It wasn’t until the third semester, when, at the prompting of one of the students who
was really seminary-bound, the professor agreed that we could spend some time
translating a bit of the New Testament, that I finally got to see if it really said what I’d been told.
But she didn’t have us translate any of those texts that had been held over my head all those years.
Nothing about the role of women in ministry, or in the congregation, or in the household. Nothing that
would explain my not having been allowed to acolyte as a girl, or ever read the lessons in worship, or
hold a position of leadership in the church.
Nope. She had us turn to the gospel of John, the first chapter.

Bible Study Groups
We will meet January
14th at 9:30 AM at Big Sky
Senior Living Center on
Waterford Way, in the library.
Winter 2020: We are called!
by Kathryn A. Kleinhans. Reformer Martin Luther
used the word “vocation” or “calling” to refer to all
aspects of human life. We are called to respond to God
not just in our personal relationship with God but in our
relationships with family and friends, in our work, and in
our communities. This four-part Bible study will
explore stories from both the Old and New
Testament. As we reflect on how our biblical forebears
heard and responded to God’s call, we will gain insight
into how God is calling us—and how God may be calling
others through us.
Looking Ahead to Sunday Bible Study
Pastor Trina is offering a weekly Bible Study on
Thursdays at 10:00 am and 7:00 pm. The focus
looks ahead to Sunday's lessons, particularly the Gospel
lesson. No experience necessary and each week is a
stand-alone lesson so come as you are able. Bring your
favorite Bible. There will be coffee and treats. _________________________________________________________
Adult Education after Worship
Beginning Sunday, January 12, Pastor Trina will be
offering an adult education opportunity after worship.
We will meet at 10:45 for seven Sundays and work our
way through the book Reclaiming the “L” Word:
Renewing the Church from Its Lutheran Core by Kelly
A. Fryer. The format of the book is short chapters (10-
12 pages) with discussion questions at the end of each
chapter, which will guide our conversation. You may
order your own copy, or the office will have a dozen
used copies of this book available for $7.00 each
beginning in early January. Pastor Trina also has a
couple copies that can be given away for free if you’ve
blown your book budget over the holidays! Just let her
know your need. Here’s a short review of the book:
Reclaiming the L Word is a book about renewing
congregations by recognizing and living out the core
teachings of the Lutheran faith. In the introduction, the
author states:
I hope that people of every denomination will find
this book helpful as they wrestle with these
important issues within their own traditions. But this little book is primarily written for those who
call themselves Lutheran and, specifically, those who
are members of ELCA congregations, and it is intended
to help us answer central questions: Who are we?
What DOES it mean to be a Lutheran today,
anyway? And, why does it matter? Inspirational,
engaging, and challenging, this book is a must-read for
pastors and congregational leaders!

Spotlight on: The President’s
Message
Our year rapidly came
to an end. Thanksgiving in
November ended and the
Advent Season, in
December, came on its
heels.
It’s been a wonderful thing to have a Pastor in our
pulpit. Pastor Trina has given some wonderful sermons
and has assumed the pastoral duties that are so important
for our well-being. One thing to consider is attending her
Bible Studies on Thursday morning and evening. Our
attendance is getting better, with some folks returning to
worship with us. This is a joy to see and to be able to
welcome them back. We are also seeing visitors attending
and want to encourage them to come back. We’re a family
and as a family we care for each other, so pray for our
members who are sick, home-bound, disabled, and anyone
who may be in need.
It’s good to see little children worshiping
with us. There’s something about seeing them
going up for the children’s sermon that warms
the heart. They go on to Sunday school,
conducted by Julie Corbin who is assisted by
Heatherlynn Meeks, and are happy to be there.
Hopefully more will come. Learning how to
communicate with the parents is the challenge in bringing
their children as their parents were faithful in bringing
them.
The Church Council members
continue to work well together, both
within their individual committees and the
Council itself. It’s always surprising to me
that our members are willing to
compromise, listen, and then make the decisions that are
important in the functioning of our church. Some of our
council members will be going off the Council, as their
terms are up. The Nominating Committee may call and
ask you if you would consider being a candidate to fill one
of these vacant Council positions. It’s a great way to serve
and give of yourself to God and Gold Hill. If you're
called, please pray and give it some serious
contemplation.
Our famous Annual “Lutefisk
Dinner” we’ve put on the first
Saturday of December for the past
40 plus years, was again a great
success.
This was in spite of both our Montana Universities being
in big playoff football games (they both won). I talked to
folks from Ennis, Deer Lodge, Dillion, Bozeman,
Anaconda, Phillipsburg, and Drummond, who raved about
all the special Norwegian foods we served. Most had
come before and those who came for the first time, said
they would, for sure, be back. The help all of you
provided and the fun we all had working together, was a
sermon in and of itself. “God’s Work Our Hands” really
was shown and experienced. This positive exposure to our
community and those communities around us was
amazing. We made a nice profit which will help to
purchase new tables for the Fellowship Hall.
I hope all of you had a Merry Christmas and happy
holidays. I sign-off with that old adage “Remember the
Reason for the Season”.
In Christ Jesus,
Mike Lawson

Music Ministry Notes
Happy New Year! Last month the
Gold Hill Lutheran Church choir
participated in the community concert
at Butte Central High School
auditorium and did a
marvelous job. Then the choir joined
in with all the other participants in
singing the Hallelujah Chorus. It was a great night.
Advent had the Wednesday evening soup and bread
suppers followed by the Holden services which were
wonderful and helped set the tone for the Advent season.
As I write this Christmas is about 2 weeks away. The
New Year is upon us and presents tremendous
opportunities for all to serve our Lord Jesus Christ. Choir practice continues every Wednesday night starting
at 6:30 p.m. in the choir loft and ends at 7:30 p.m. This
year will see the choir looking at other ways to further the
music ministry of Gold Hill such as adding additional
instruments and at times changing up the special music by
using duets, trios, and quartets. Please consider joining
us!! You may talk to any choir member or to me about
joining us in our music ministry. My phone number
is (406) 491-5393, or you may email me
Thank you all for an eventful and interesting 2019.
Here's to 2020 and to a greater clarity in serving our Lord,
our church, and our community.
God bless,
Dave Coleman

Worship Team Minutes
The Gold Hill Choir entertained in a
Community event on December 8, 2019 at
Butte Central High School and sang If My
People and Christmas Grace accompanied
by Dave Coleman and Sue Repola.
Thank you to Kevin & Maria Biastoch for getting the
Christmas trees. Debbie Brown for two beautiful Christmas
wreaths. The Volunteers who decorate the Church for the
Advent season.
For those of you who don’t know, the Worship and
Music teams consist of Pastor Trina Johnsten, Dave
Coleman, Dorothy Schultz, Cheryl Neuhart, Dorothy Tallon,
and Christine Ketchum. We find people to assist with the
Sunday services. We decorate the Sanctuary to reflect the
seasons and colors of the Church. We order all the supplies
needed to carry out all the services during the year. We
maintain lists for Communion assistants and those to set up
and make communion bread. We choose appropriate and
familiar music to sing for Sunday service and Choir. We
plan a yearly budget to cover our committees’ costs each
year. We make banners and set out floral arrangements. We
arrange for fill in Pastors/ Lay Ministers to give Sunday
service when necessary. We serve in any capacity needed for
Sunday service. We report to the Gold Hill Council. Pastor
Trina Johnston gives us direction and guidance.
This past year we have worked with a new Council
and two Interim Pastors. We have united to meet the needs
of the Church to fulfill the purpose of our teams. Our goal is
to reach out, welcome, and involve people in worship. We
would like more to join Choir and make known our musical
talents in the congregation. We would like longer volunteer
lists for assisting with Sunday services. We would like to
plan more fun get-togethers. We would like to replace some
of the aged articles that we use for Church services. We are
open to new ideas.
Thank you to the Committee members for their
friendship, work, and support. This service work has made
my year filled with spiritual growth, happiness and gratitude.
God has blessed me indeed!
In service,
Christine Ketchum

With the New Year we are
starting a new Sunday School
rotation based on Apps. Yes, apps,
just like those on a smart phone.
Everyday apps are designed to help us
live our lives. God has already given
us the greatest tool for living a good life, the Bible. For
every need in life, we can find a verse that God has given us
to help us.
This will be a great rotation for all ages! Adults may
want to come learn about what apps do while sharing your
knowledge of the bible with the kids. Come and learn
together!
We will be exploring Facebook, Minecraft, Pokémon
Go, Instagram and all kinds of apps as they relate to
living our lives to honor God. You may know the bible
stories, but the kids know the apps! What a great time for
joint learning! Sundays after the worship service. We get
treats (and coffee) first, then Sunday School.
*************
Crafts and Conversation continues on the 2nd
Thursday of the month, with our time together for
January on the 9th from 6pm to 9 pm in Room 104. Bring
your own project to work on while we visit and get to know
each other. Snacks are always welcome!

No Sunday School on January 26th as it will be the
Annual Meeting! _______________________________________________
Gold Hill ELCA Trust Committee
December 5, 2019
Members present: Ron Gruss, Ed Engle, Mike Welker,
Annette Lawson, and Vern Nielsen
Old Business
Annette read the minutes from October 8,2019.
Added to the minutes was a request from the Music
and Worship committee for $167.63 for a pulpit
scarf. Since the request wasn’t read at the meeting,
the vote was taken by e-mail and the request was
accepted. Mike(m) and Vern(s) to accept the minutes
with the addition. The motion passed.
Ron presented a thank you note from the Music and
Worship committee for the 3 piece alter parament
and the pulpit scarf. Annette will post the thank you
note on the bulletin board.
Vern has had some health issues and hasn’t been
able to contact Autumn Keller, the Thrivent
representative in Helena. She doesn’t want to drive
to Butte to meet with our committee. Vern will try to
contact her again.
New Business
Ron went over the Edward Jones written proposal
for financial investments. We still want to check out
other options such as Thrivent.
Mike Welker suggested we check out Vanguard.
They charge lower fees because you self direct the

investments. Mike will present information on
Vanguard at the next meeting.
We need to work on the annual report. Annette will
gather highlights from this year’s minutes. Ron and
Ed will work on the financial part of the report.
The next meeting will be January 14, 2020 at 6:30pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Annette Lawson

Gold Hill Lutheran Church Council
Minutes – December 10, 2019
The meeting was called to order by Curt
Quist, Administration Director.
The following were present: Curt Quist,
Administration Director; Revonda Stordahl,
Treasurer; Peggy Graving, Secretary; Jerry Aaker, Outreach
Ministry; Chris Ketchum, Worship Ministry; Lynn Aniksdal,
Leadership Ministry; Julie Corbin, Spiritual Ministry; and
Pastor Trina Johnsten. Mike Lawson, President, was
excused.
Pastor Trina led devotions from a 2007 Council Devotions
titled Living In God’s Amazing Grace (published by the New
England ELCA Church’s Bishop). The passage read was Luke
2:16-19. We discussed “pondering” and what it means for us
at Gold Hill. What dilemma in our congregation can benefit
from our pondering?
A motion made by Revonda, seconded by Chris and passed
by the council approved the November minutes as written.
The treasurer’s report showed that from January to November
we are ahead by $19,000. The receipts have been down, but
because the expenses have been down we are still ahead year
to date. She provided the budget verses actual from January
through November. Julie move, Peggy seconded and the
motion passed to accept the report of the treasurer.
Pastor Trina’s Report: Pastor highlighted the following
from her report: The nominating Committee will meet on
December 19th. We went over all positions that needed to be
filled and Peggy will send a copy of these to Pastor Trina. One
hundred thirty-two letters were sent to members who have not
been attending regarding their membership. Eleven members
have asked to be removed. Seventeen asked to remain on our
rolls and will be kept as Associate Members. Three members
requested transfers. On December 20th anyone who has not
returned a letter will be removed from our membership rolls.
In order to permit Reverend Trina Johnsten to benefit from the
provisions of Section 107 of the Internal Revenue Code, the
Council needs to specify that the total compensation paid to
her during the fiscal year 2020 includes a housing allowance.
Rev. Trina Johnsten estimates that she will spend $700 a
month for housing expenses. Since such approval by the
council would permit her to deduct that amount from her
taxable income and has no further effect upon our
congregation or budget, it was:
RESOLVED:
That the total compensation of $7899.25 paid to Rev. Trina
Johnsten for January – March 2020 includes a housing
allowance of $2100, and should her contract be extended past
March 31, 2020, this would be increased by the amount of
$700 a month through the duration of her employment with
Gold Hill Lutheran.
Reports of Council Members:
Mike Lawson, President, email attached.
Curt Quist, Administration Director. Curt has not talked with
Dave yet regarding his contract. An email request for Winter
Solstice Concert on December 19th passed with the charge of
$150 for use of the church and $75 to Tony for janitorial fee.
Curt had a contract for the janitorial fee and will prepare a
contract for the concert. He gave this to Julie.
Lynn – report attached. She added that she and Alan added
light behind the cross in the sanctuary over the front door but
when it is on the first two sanctuary lights must be illuminated
also.
Chris – report attached. Thanks were given to her and her
committee for their outstanding work this fall.
Julie asked for the $250 deposit for FLBC for vacation bible
school. The total that Gold Hill will pay this year is $1200.
Gloria Dei will be splitting the cost with us and will be holding
VBS there. VBS will be the week of June 14th.
Jerry – No report. Pastor Patty Callaghan is heading up the
food drive through Advent for the Food Bank.
New Business: Pastor was asked to leave the room as we
discussed bonuses for her, Mary, and Tony. Revonda moved,
Julie seconded and the motion passed to give bonuses this
year.
Old Business:
Revonda went through the budget that she, Curt and Bruce
Graving have been working on. Revonda thanked everyone
for their input and we walked through the budget. The budget
shows a deficit, but Revonda feels that we will not have any
problem in 2020. Julie’s – Spiritual Growth – category will
need tweaking to cover the cost of VBS. We are to look over
the budget and will vote on it at the next meeting.
Lynn reported that the Call Committee will be meeting with
Jason at 2:00 on January 14th. He has information on a
candidate that he would like to present to the committee.
Lynn encourages to contact people who we have not seen at
church lately and find out if there is a reason they aren’t
coming and ask them if they would come back. Let them know
they are missed and let them know what is going on at Gold
Hill.
The annual meeting was set for January 26, 2020 with a
potluck after church.
It is annual report time. It is so very helpful to Mary to
complete your report and get it to her.
Julie moved, Chris seconded and the motion carried to
adjourn. We adjourned after saying the Lord’s Prayer.
Respectfully Submitted,
Peggy Graving, Secretary
The Nugget Page 8
[Continued from page 1]
You know this section; we read it every Christmas Eve:
In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
But she pointed us to verse 14, and said, “Start there.”
And, low and behold, all my suspicions were manifest,
as I began my translation and saw that John 1:14 literally reads:
And the Word became flesh and he tented us.
Not “dwelt among us” as most of our translations read,
but literally, he came and he “tented us” or “pitched his tent among us.”
God in Christ came down here and tented us!
For a Montana girl who has spent a lot of time in tents, this speaks volumes to me.
A tent protects you from the elements.
A tent provides safety and security.
A tent hugs you close and says to the elements and wildlife:
Stay back, this one’s mine.
Oh, how I love this image.
Oh, how I love that God came to earth in the flesh
and decided to be the tent that shelters us from all that would assail us.
It would be another eight years before I actually took the plunge and went to seminary.
There I was able to master the languages and the theology enough to put to rest
all those voices of the past that said that women don’t have the gifts for ministry.
But I am forever grateful for that first taste of truth…
that knowledge that God came to tent us,
to be among us, to protect us, to keep us safe,
to be the barrier between us and all that would harm us.
In this New Year,
may you rest secure under the tent that is our Lord Jesus Christ,
the one who pitched his tent among us,
and better yet, the one who came to save us. Pastor Trina
