S Black History Month at Essex Primary
Something exciting happened at Essex Primary School. As
part of Black History Month celebrations, the Year 6 children
had the privilege of working with world-renowned and in-
credibly talented musicians, singer song writers, performance
poets and actors. The project celebrated the life and works of
Maya Angelou a change-maker in black history, who over-
came many challenges to become an accomplished poet, an
award-winning writer, a journalist, an activist, a performer, a
dancer, an actress, a director, and a teacher. Believing that
“we are more alike than unalike”, Maya Angelou’s wise
words epitomise the ethos of our school where we respect and
celebrate our cultural diversity. To create their own musical
compositions, lyrics, dances and poetry, the children used
Maya Angelou’s poems as an inspiration guided by Eugene
Skeef FRSA, Sarah Jewell, Zena Edwards, Emma Williams,
Itoya Osagiede, Grace Hull, Davide Mantovani, Laura Cole,
Kenrick Rowe and Mark Brown. We were also delighted to
welcome Courtney Pine CBE, one of Britain’s most celebrat-
ed and influential Jazz musicians, into school, to share his
music and expertise with the children culminating in the Year
6 ‘Black History Month - Her Story’ performance which took
place Friday 17th October.
Essex Primary School’s Black History performance reached
new heights with the input from international Jazz musician
Courtney Pine. Inspirational Head Teacher Rosie Cowan said
the theme was based on the life history of Maya Angelou and
Courtney’s presence with the other musicians, staff and of
course our children exemplified her poetry - “We all should
know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must
understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in val-
ue no matter what their colour.” Maya Angelou (April 4, 1928
- May 28, 2014).
Quotes from children’s letters to Courtney Pine:
“We are delighted to have had you in our school. Courtney,
you have inspired many pupils in our school to take part in
ECAM when they enter year 5 and 6. I hope you take away
the love and pride from the sweet children, beloved teachers
and members of staff at Essex Primary School.” Kajipa
“When I met you in our school, I was truly amazed. It was
awesome to get an opportunity to sing with you. The first note
you played was mind blowing. I felt like I was in a fairy land
when you played the saxophone.” Abhinav
“I would like to thank you for visiting our school. Due to this,
you improved our performance and you brought our perfor-
mance to life. Surprisingly you have inspired and encouraged
me to enjoy music a lot more than I did before.” Umar
“Thank you so much for working with us, the privilege was
one in a million. I felt myself just staring as so many things
happened including the fascinating way you blended into our
music and songs.” Ahmad Ali
“It was amazing when you came in the hall and blew every-
one away with a short improvisation and so I want to thank
you. You played the song happy and you played with great
fluency. You used the vibrant art of swing to express your
musical feeling and joined in with the drummer, guitarist and
pianist. You made the song more lively, thank you.” Bilal to
pursue a career in acting."
