The Grand Master, Metropolitan +Lorenzo conducted the investiture for postulants to be admitted into the Confraternity. The Grand Master inducted eight new knights and dames at a ceremony in Trinity Hall, Aberdeen in the presence of family, friends and members of the Order of the Scottish Samurai. The ceremony was enhanced by the display of new church mantles by members of the Priory. The service in the great hall was led by the Grand Master with each postulant being called forward individually. Ladies received a blessing as dames and the men knighted by Metropolitan +Lorenzo. Those invested were Jane Armour, Gail Watt, Charles Abel, Andrew Anderson, George Carruthers, Thomas Tait, Greg Thomson and Ronald Watt. Mrs Cath Johnston provided the music for the occasion and accompanied singer Yvonne Morton for her solo of Pie Jesu. To recognise the amount of work undertaken by the members of the Priory over the past three years, the Grand Master surprised those present with awards of the Cross of Merit of St Nicodemus of Palermo. These were awarded to Dames Beverley Graham, Linda Thomson, Jane Armour, Chevaliers Gordon Casely and Ronald Watt. To her surprise, Barbara Wojcik was also recognised for her outstanding work in producing the Confraternity Mantles. She is now an Honorary Officer of Merit of the Priory. In view of the work undertaken by Prior Albert Thomson, the Grand Master announced that he was invested as a hereditary Archon of the Primatial Throne of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church Abroad. This rank is reflected by the display of a coronet on his mantle above the Confraternity eagle and his arms. At the conclusion of the service, the Prior presented the Grand Master and Chevalier Mark McCue with the Priory of Scotland Eagle of Honour Medal. Following the ceremony, members and guests enjoyed a luncheon in the lovely setting of the minor hall. In addition £105 was raised in donations for our 2016 charity appeal.

Over the past year the Priory has formed a friendly and strong association with the Order of the Scottish Samurai. Our own Chevalier Ronald Watt founded the awards some 22 years ago in recognition of people and organisations who perform outstanding work in their chosen fields. To build on this relationship, the Priory was honoured to be able to take part in the annual Scottish Samurai Awards Ceremony on 2nd July at Aberdeen Town House. The Award Ceremony recognised over 20 people from all walks of life including Dr Joseph Morrow Lord Lyon King of Arms, the Lord Provost of Aberdeen, Daisuki Matsuunaga Consul General of Japan, Professor George Popper President of International Bodyguard and Security Service Association and many local people. Three of our members received Samurai Awards, Dame Beverley Graham, Chevalier Gordon Casely and Chevalier George Carruthers. The Grand Master also presented our first Eagle of Honour Medal to Mrs Ann Fotheringham for her remarkable commitment to the Scouts Movement in Scotland for over 30 years. Following the ceremony, the Grand Master, Chevalier Ronald Watt, Dame Gail Watt, the Prior, Dame Linda Thomson and Chevalier Gordon Casely were invited to a Civic Dinner by the Lord Provost. After an introduction by the Lord Provost, the Grand Master was invited to say Grace. Dinner was a wonderful occasion in the lovely surroundings of the Bon-Accord Room. The following day, many members of the Order of the Scottish Samurai attended the Priory Investiture and luncheon. Afterwards the Lord Lyon King of Arms and the Very Reverend Professor Iain Torrance, Dean of the Chapel Royal were presented with Honorary Black Belts by Lord Charles Bruce and Chevalier Ronald Watt. Much to his surprise and delight, the Grand Master was also invested as a member of the Order of the Scottish Samurai.

Ann Fotheringham – Eagle of Honour Medal Ann Fotheringham from Westhill in Aberdeenshire is the first recipient of the Priory of Scotland Eagle of Honour, awarded in recognition of the immense work and support she has provided to the Scouts Movement. A remarkable lady, Ann has been committed to Scouting and Scouting ideals for over 30 years in a variety of roles locally, regionally and nationally. She first became involved in 1983 as a ‘parent helper’ before taking up an official position within the Scouts Association as Section Team Leader in Westhill. Six years later she was selected to take up the role of Assistant Area Commissioner for the Gordon District. Ann has strong beliefs and a passion for helping young adults improve their lives and in 1996 took up her first role in helping to develop training in the Scouts Association supporting adults in Gordon. She was heavily involved, first as a Local Training Manager before taking up a Regional role and Advisor for training in the UK in 2008. Ann was also Assistant Commissioner for the North East of Scotland and Scottish Commissioner for Adult Training. She managed to mentor and assess new volunteers and still had time to serve as Regional Commissioner for Scouting in the North East of Scotland and Assistant Regional Commissioner for Adult Training in the region. Ann served on the Scottish Board, the Programme and Development Committee, Scottish Scout Adult Appointment Committee and the UK Adult Support Team representing Scotland. She was part of the team undertaking change to the Structure of Scouting in Scotland in particular the roles for Adult Training. She also developed a training module for Young Leaders in Scotland and co-authored Scouts Association training modules and helped develop Training Programmes for Adults in Scouting. Between 2009 and 2010 Ann was part of the Scottish Government funded programme ‘Managing Together’. This joint organisational approach between the Scouts Association, Girl Guiding Scotland, Boys Brigade Scotland and the Girls Brigade Scotland developed training for Managers in Uniformed Organisations. Ann has proved to be a worthy winner of our Eagle of Honour and as such is an Honorary Officer of Merit of the Priory of Scotland.

Honour for Prior Patrick of Ireland Congratulations are extended to Prior Patrick Reid as the second recipient of the ancient title of Archon in the hereditary category. The Grand Master recently bestowed this honour upon Prior Patrick for the outstanding work to him personally and to the Church. This title of Archon goes back in time to ancient Greece and has been bestowed by Orthodox primates upon worthy individuals for hundreds of years. Prior Patrick was unable to attend the investiture in Scotland and has recently undergone surgery. Our thoughts are with him and we wish him a speedy recovery.

New Members The Prior is delighted to welcome Derek Ronksley from Derbyshire and Jane Armour from Aberdeen to the Priory in Scotland. Derek was unable to attend the investiture due to a long standing engagement where he helps plan and organise a large charitable event. Jane Armour also brings with her wonderful skills as a Calligrapher and she has finalised all new diplomas.

Chevalier Charles Abel – The Box & Fiddle In issue seven, we reported that Chevalier Charles Abel, musician with one of Scotland’s top rated Ceilidh Bands Iron Broo, composed a tune dedicated to Chevalier Ronald Watt on being awarded his 9th Dan in Karate. We can now report that the sheet music of the tune is featured in the July edition of the Box & Fiddle magazine of the National Association of Accordion and Fiddle Clubs (NAAFC). The NAAFC is a national association of clubs dedicated to traditional Scottish dance music.

Keeper of the Insignia As the work of the Confraternity develops and membership grows it was agreed that the role of Keeper of the Insignia should not be the responsibility of a Prior. This responsibility adds to the work of the Prior and with the approval of the Grand Master, the Priory of Scotland will now take over this responsibility from Prior Patrick. As Treasurer, Chevalier Mark McCue has agreed to take in the responsibility as Keeper of the Insignia.
