What a year we've had! It has been a tough year with so many obstacles and yet so many blessings. Right now it is Jozi's helter-skelter end-of–year glitzy party season, added to that a mad rush to wrap up all of 2012’s business commitments. Then, finally, time to celebrate the many happinesses the Summer December holidays offer, whether it be a beautiful sunny day on the beach, a glass of ice cold bubbly, or Sunday lunch braais with friends and hordes of children slurping on cokes, munching their way through chips while the meat sizzles – pure bliss!

In this issue of The North Side we have four pages dedicated to helping you find the perfect present for your partner and children. We also cover the Lenn Watson Foundation Golf Challenge – an annual event not to be missed, whilst supporting a much needed cause. There is plenty to read and enjoy in this issue of The North Side with an even bigger Community Section to fill you in on what’s happening in our area.

During this time of year we all start making our holiday plans and looking forward to family gatherings. Whether we travel back to our home towns or we jet off to a beautiful destination, one thing rings true: there’s nothing like being with those you love during special occasions. The best thing you can give your children, next to good habits, are good memories!

We hope all our advertisers and readers who have worked very hard all year have a wonderful and much deserved break!! Thank you for your support and loyalty in 2012, The North Side 1st quarter will be out again end of March 2013.

that he accepted the award on behalf of these, “committed and passionate individuals and the birds, bees and trees who have no voice”. He also committed the City of Joburg to continuing its quest to explore new innovations, diligently interrogate the developmental agenda, aggressively work towards bridging the green-divide and to consistently strive to build a citizenry that takes pride and ownership of its environment. Johannesburg City Parks, the custodians of greening in the City, has planted over 200 000 trees since 2010, transformed landfill sites into world class parks, developed over 42 community food gardens, beautified key arterials in the city, is accelerating its rollout of the green outdoor gyms and is planting 7000 fruit trees this financial year.

“The Arbor City 2012 Award salutes a decade of cutting-edge service excellence in greening by the City of Joburg and Johannesburg City Parks,” he stated.

Seeing the Rivonia Riding Club River Rangers on horseback around and about Paulshof, certainly adds to the country feel of the area, turning heads as they ride by. They really are a talking point. Furthermore, they have a distinct purpose and are doing a phenomenal job in the area.

rivonia riding Club river rangers do a phenomenal job in Paulshof

8 | SUMMER | NORTHSIDE MAGAZINE | www.thenorthside.co.za

The Rivonia Riding Club River Rangers who are volunteers, conduct daily environmental patrols from their equestrian base situated on the public open space along the river bank on Achter Road, Paulshof, where the Braamfontein Spruit and Sandspruit rivers meet. The Rivonia Riding Club (a non-profit organisation) and the river rangers’ initiative are managed by Lauren Hegele who is passionate about horses and the environment. Lauren also serves on the Paulshof Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association committee taking care of environmental matters. Together with the Johannesburg Voluntary Mounted River Rangers

who operate from the Field and Study Centre in Sandton, the rangers combined cover a 17 kilometre

stretch of city parkland and river trails along the Braamfontein Spruit and the Sandspruit Rivers. Public parks in Riverclub, Parkmore, Bryanston, Paulshof and Sunninghill are also monitored by the rangers.

Sewerage spills, illegal dumping, littering and water pollution need to be managed on a sustainable basis. Horses and volunteer riders offer a low-impact solution for observing and reporting these problems to city authorities so that rapid interventions can be applied. The numbers of vagrants inhabiting informal squatter camps along the Braamfontein Spruit have also mushroomed. The River Rangers supply regular updates to the SA Police Services (SAPS), as well as community forums and security managers in the above areas so the size and spread of these camps can be controlled.

CHRISTMAS TOY DRIVE KIN (Kids in Need) was formed to help children in need, and in particular child headed households. The aim is to make a meaningful difference in the lives of these children who have done nothing to place themselves in a dire situation. The KIN team have identified a number of needy cases in M’sawawa (a settlement on the edge of Chartwell – on our doorstep) which will benefit from the charity.

As the Christmas season draws near we would like to make a small difference for the children from the Feed our Future initiative as well as those in M’sawawa. In this endeavour we would be most grateful for your helping hand.

We would like to give each child a gift. This does not need to be something new or big, it just needs to be something – this would gladden the hearts of these precious little children. The gift needs to be something that will fit into a shoe box. Kindly wrap the box and write on the box if the gift is intended for a boy or girl and a rough idea of the age of the child. As a rough guide, please work on the following age groups: 0 – 2, 3 – 6, 7 – 9, 10 – 12, 13 – 16 and 17 - 18

Your gift would be most appreciated by these children and it would go a long way to brighten their day.

Should you need some assistance, ideas and suggestions or should you wish to be involved in any small way please do not hesitate to get hold of any of the team members through the Fourways Community Church or on 082-852-8890.

Thank you!

Fatal hazards to look out for in your

back yard...

A myriad of dangers may lurk in your garden Thursday, 11 October 2012. The recent death of a KwaZulu-Natal family, including a toddler, as a result of mushroom poisoning have brought home to South Africans the danger of toxic plants and fungi which are found in nature and our gardens.

“Mushroom poisoning is relatively common in South Africa,” says Mande Toubkin, General Manager Emergency, Trauma, Transplant and Corporate Social Investment of Netcare. “Many people are unaware of the dangers that certain mushrooms and plants can pose to our health.

According to Toubkin, the Amanita phalloides mushroom, also known as the “Death Cap”, appears edible but is in fact extremely dangerous if it is ingested. It is responsible for the majority (90%) of mushroom related deaths around the world and half of all individuals who consume this particularly toxic fungus die.Parents should remove any mushrooms or toxic plants from their garden rather than run the risk of their children ingesting these, she advises.

“Apart from risky mushrooms, a number of plants that are commonly found in gardens also contain powerful toxins. The foxglove, frangipani and oleander are all cases in point being toxic enough to kill animals and people if consumed in adequate quantities. Even the delicate daffodil has poisonous bulbs, which if eaten, can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and sometimes death.” Fortunately humans or animals rarely consume these plants. Toubkin says the oleander tastes so vile that children are highly unlikely to ingest a sufficient amount of the toxins it contains for it to be dangerous. Nevertheless such plants pose a potential threat and parents might want to avoid planting them in the garden to remain safe. In Toubkin’s view it is also a good idea for children to be educated about any such hazards that may exist in the garden.“Symptoms related to this type of consumption can include abdominal pain, slow heartbeat, vomiting and diarrhoea, fatigue, hallucinations and muscular spasms.

She adds that anyone who may have ingested toxic mushrooms or plants should be taken to a hospital immediately. Home remedies are not helpful and should be avoided. “Get to your nearest emergency unit if you suspect your child has ingested anything toxic,” advises Dr Roets. “Activated charcoal is a good agent to keep in any first aid kit, but should only be administered after medical advice has been sought. The poison centre may also advise you to induce vomiting, however this is not to be done without the proper medical guidance.”

Pinnacle Cars

Pinnacle Cars is an established brand of 12 years. It all started with a young entrepreneur who, after sealing his first car sale on the beach, used his vast experience working with BMW to establish his own pre-owned car sales. With an established Randburg branch, Jayson Bischofberger alongside new partner Riaz Sayanvala, have taken Pinnacle Cars to a new level by opening this multi-purpose showroom in Bryanston.

Many will be familiar with the venue as the old Jackson’s Diner lot; and the

same community spirit has been retained at the new Pinnacle Cars

lot. This unique destination offers patrons the opportunity to dine in relaxation in the Café while they wait for their cars to get pampered and spruced.

The minute you walk through the large wooden double doors of the Café, you are greeted with delicious aromas. The neutral warm interiors of the Café are only part of what makes this venue so special. Not only are diners surrounded by the comfort of decor using red brick, granite tops, dark wood furniture and cream seats, but also by the smell of the burning wood pizza oven which produces only the

freshest offerings smothered in rocket, balsamic reduction and caramelised red onion among many others. The list of toppings on these thin-crusted creations is mouth-watering.

Although only open since September 2012, the food and menu is an unexpected welcome to Pinnacle Cars. Other options to sample include creamy pastas and speciality salads complimented by a secret dressing recipe concocted by menu designer, Tamlyn Bischofberger. A selection of wines is available to pair

Pinnacle Cars in Bryanston is a unique new destination offering – combining its successful pre-owned car business, with a one-stop car wash and scrumptious new licensed Café. It is well-appointed in a prime position nestled discreetly between Nicolway and The Baron on Main. This rarity offers both privacy and accessibility at the same time.

with your meals; cleverly displayed on a chalk wall above the counter.

Situated in the eddy of the main arteries of William Nicol Drive and Main Road, Pinnacle Cars is sure to become a regular gathering place. It is a gem waiting to welcome visitors from the numerous business parks in the vicinity. For those who seldom get the chance to leave their office desks, the Café is open for Take Away orders and offers a delivery service.

The dedicated team at the Café make patrons feel well at home: under the efficiency of the Manager, and the watchful eye of the friendly staff moving between the deep enclave of the pizza oven and the impressive coffee machine.

The lot has been frequented by regulars for the last 12 to 15 years by those who saw to their weekly car wash. Pinnacle Cars has kept the community happy by sustaining the car wash, now under the Pinnacle name. But now, regulars can sip on a frothy cappuccino, premium beers like Corona with lime or a chilled glass of wine while they wait. In an environment and lifestyle which is increasingly busy, this hassle free offering is convenient for those constantly on-the-go. The only problem may be that you’ll find yourself not ready to leave when your car is done.

The Café offers a flat-screen TV which is

perfect for catching the sport on weekends, or following the business world between morning meetings. In keeping with the sense of community entrenched in the property, the beautiful Café area is available for day functions and exclusive evenings. The venue above the Café offers some of the best views in Johannesburg with an adjoining balcony area.

Vehicles are carefully selected for the Pinnacle Cars Bryanston showroom. Buyers will find only identified low-mileage premium branded cars on offer – although also allowing for trade-ins for clients’ ease. The higher-end car models include BMW, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Bentley, Range Rover and Jaguar. This ranges down to Opel, Ford and Toyota. Pinnacle Cars caters to a full bouquet. Higher mileage vehicles can be found at the Randburg branch.

The manager at Pinnacle Cars Bryanston, Brandon Papenfus, works with a dedicated team under Jayson and Riaz; offering professional service in their stylish new showroom floor. After years in the business, Pinnacle Cars has built up sturdy relationships with the dealerships in the area. This has resulted in Pinnacle Cars offering valet services for a number of dealerships.

There are many exciting new ventures on the horizon for Pinnacle Cars. One such is the opening of a marine component with mastercraft through a partnering with Waterworld. These are all part of Jayson and Riaz’s growth strategies – emanating from the humble beginnings of a single workshop.

The potential of the property is being fully realised and brought to full glory in an unassuming environment. Pinnacle Cars Bryanston is open 7-days a week.

iPad Mini: everything You Need to know

The iPad Mini is here. It’s a sleek, thin and light 7.9-inch tablet made of anodised aluminium and glass that follows the format reduction pioneered by Google and Amazon. Its specs and design are pretty much what we expected.

SpecificationsBasically, the iPad Mini is a smaller iPad 2; it uses the same dual-core A5 processor, memory and storage.

The whole package. In a smaller package.

Go to www.ecmac.com for prices

Mac mini

there’s a whole server in there

Serving up quad-core power. Mac mini with OS X Server features a 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor that delivers incredible speed and performance, thanks to innovations like Turbo Boost 2.0, Hyper-Threading, and an integrated memory controller. Add in 6MB of L3 cache, and you’ll find that Mac mini with OS X Server is packed with power.

iPhone 5 Creating an entirely new design meant inventing entirely new technology.

When we envisioned the new iPhone, we landed on a remarkably thin and light design. But it’s nearly impossible to make a device so thin and so light without sacrificing features or performance. The iPhone 5: the thinnest, lightest, fastest iPhone ever.

iMac

We’ve gone to extraordinary lengths. and widths.

Sit down in front of the new iMac and something incredible happens: The world around you seems to disappear, and you lose yourself in the big, beautiful display. To create an experience this immersive, we pushed every limit, rethought every detail, and advanced iMac in the most astonishing ways.

The ultimate all-in-one. Honed to the cutting edge. The first iMac was a revolution: An all-in-one computer that put everything - display, processor, graphics, storage, memory, and more - inside one simple, stylish enclosure. Countless innovations later, we’ve raised the bar yet again. The new iMac includes the most advanced, most brilliant desktop display we’ve ever built, and it’s filled with the latest high-performance technologies. Yet it’s just 5 mm thin at its edge with up to 40 percent less volume than the previous generation. To do all that required unprecedented feats of engineering - and imagination. We invented new technologies, pioneered new manufacturing techniques, and devised all-new ways to do more in less space.

The new iPad 4

Just as stunning.twice as fast.

We focused on the big picture, but never lost sight of the details.

The most important feature on any iPad is the screen. So for the iPad with Retina display, we wanted to build not just the best iPad display, but the best display on any mobile device. To create a display with over 3 million pixels was an engineering feat in its own right. But we went even further. We designed a camera that could take images as brilliant as the display itself. And we enclosed iPad in a unibody so thin and light, you can take all those pixels with you wherever you go. And they travel beautifully.

2013New home decor trends forWhen the economy tanked in 2008, homeowners hit the pause button on furniture purchases and home renovations. They stood back, watched their savings and retirement accounts take a roller-coaster ride, and generally stopped investing in home decor.Nearly five years later, that sentiment finally may be turning an important and well-decorated corner.

The emphasis is changing from ‘Where can I save the most money’ to ‘What’s the perfect piece that totally reflects me.’ It could be the economy, or it could be that people are ready for change.

This is one of the findings of the Design Centre’s yearly trend reports. People are now looking at their homes and making them more of a reflection of their day-to-day activities.

Among the trends for 2013 are patternsincludingfloralsandstripes.

Animal prints: These are not zebra or leopard prints, but animals frolicking across upholstery fabrics. Some of the most popular? Elephants and dogs. Florals: Flowers are a decorating staple, but the buds showing up in 2013 are more modern, and more painterly. There are also Scandinavian-influenced posies blossoming on fabrics.Stripes: This was a huge runway trend during Spring/Summer 2013 Fashion Week, and it looks as if there will be no escaping stripes in home decor as well. Designers like it because it brings movement to a room.

Colours

Blue: There is no big shift in trending colours from 2012 to 2013. In 2012, the big colour was green. For 2013, it’s blue. It’s a universal favourite among men and women. In this trend, we’re seeing blue used almost as a neutral. Instead of black, there’s navy.

Yellow: We’re calling this mellow yellow because it is really muted against a lot of those neons and bright colours we saw last year. Like blue, this paler yellow is being used in a neutral shade against darker and richer colours.

Red: Orange was the attention-grabbing shade of 2012. For 2013, red is the power colour — but in moderation.

Metropolitan: This style echoes boutique hotel scale and modernity. The furnishings are all about clean lines.

With that said, laminate and wooden flooring can leave a home feeling empty and cold which is why it’s a good idea to invest in some strategically placed rugs. The addition of rugs can make your house feel more homely, warm and inviting and also adds an extra decorative flourish.

One option is to go for a traditional Persian rug. Persian rugs come into their own when paired with traditional dark wood flooring and furniture. A genuine Persian rug can be an expensive purchase but it creates a look which is timeless.

RiseoftheRug

Placing Persian Rugs In KitchensWhen people think of area rugs for kitchens, they tend to picture sisal rugs or berber rugs. But many people are surprised when Persian carpets are a great option for kitchens.

Now not antique rug, but a wool oriental area rug is a resilient rug. It is a practical choice that adds elegance to any style kitchen from traditional to contemporary.

Oriental rugs are stain resistant, durable, easy to clean, and versatile.

The Art of Hanging Art

inspiration for...

An arrangement of favourite, framed photographs, wall art, and collectibles can add personality and warmth to any room. When done correctly, wall art can change the focal point or the entire look of any room

Thesetipswillhelpyouwithyourhanging project:

•Artlooksbetterwhenhunglower, ratherthanhigher, evenif you have tall ceilings. An exception to this would be if you are adding art above a cabinet or door to raise the perception of height.

•Thebottomofartpiecesshouldbenomore thanaround9 to 12 inches above the furniture such as a sofa, table, or bed. Keep artwork low over furnishings for it to look it’s best

• Creating a group of art or photos on a wall is anexcellentwaytocreateaninterestingfocalpoint. If you arehangingagroupingthenyoucanfirstarrangethepiecesonthefloortofindapatternyoulike.Usuallyanoddnumberof pieces, such as 3, will look better than an even number. The pieces do not have to be symmetrical.

•Keepthecentreoftheartataroundeyelevel.Thismeansthe average eye level of around 60 inches to 66 inches. If you are a tall person, then obviously you will be hanging your art lower than your own eye level in order for it to look good.

• Consider lighting to emphasise your arrangement. When lighting is directed to the arrangement, it commands even more attention. Be careful of lighting that is bright. This type of lighting should be subdued and not produce glare.

•Adddiversitytothearrangement.Useframesandmatsthat are different sizes and shapes, but compliment one another.

•Payattentionto“balance”inyourentireroom.Be careful not to put everything in one part of a room. Leaving the other walls bare will throw the balance of the entire room off.

Wallpaper is back!! Yes, wallpaper.

However, don’t go out and buy 20 rolls and wallpaper your entire living room.

Wallpaper is a modern design trend that can help to add colour, pattern and style to a room and help to accentuate an area of a room. Therefore, wallpaper is best placed on walls as a “feature wall”. This will typically be the wall behind the bed or behind open wall shelving or along the tallest wall of a room. You can even use it as ART! Just add a frame around a selection of wallpaper and it’s an easy way to add style to a room! Steer clear of walls that are broken up by doors and windows. You want a solid wall to make the feature work!

roof Maintenancefor the rainy season

Housesprovidecomfortandsecurityforitstenantsbutmakingsurethesearealwaysattheiroptimumconditionisamust,especiallythisrainyseason

However,onesectionofthehousethatismostoftenoverlookedistheroof,whichshouldbesurprisingconsideringhowcrucialitisinpreservingtheconditionandintegrityofyourhouse.

Unfortunately,itisonlywhentheroofstartstoshowsignsofproblemsdowegiveittheattentionthatitneeds.Littledohomeownersrealisethatwhentheroofstartstoleak,itcandestroyinteriorsanddetails,leadingtobiggerstructuraldamage.

Richard Hawken, director of William Scott Contracts, noted that roof maintenance is as important as maintaining any part of the house. Even more so because a good roof solidly protects the entire house structure from sun, rain and other external hazards. Here are his seven tips for easier and more practical ways to maintain your roof:

1- Make sure that you have your roof checked and cleaned at least once a year. This is practically DIY (do it yourself ) as all you need to do is inspect if there are any holes, loose tex screws and nails, paint or sealant that has been damaged or if there are already rust formations.

2 - Check if the gutters are clean, free from deposits of leaves, soil, old rags etc. which will be very heavy and will cause the gutter to collapse eventually. It is also important to remove any overhanging branches to keep critters and rats off your roof.

3 - Always check the roof after a major storm because there might have been external objects such as stones, other roofs, debris etc. that winds can pick up, which can do great damage to it, such as scratches and holes, even the minute ones.

4 - From the inside, be alert for dark areas on the ceilings, peeling paints, damp spots etc. which may be signs of early roof leaks.

5 - For old roofs, repainting them (after steps 1-4) at least once every two to three years is essential. Repainting prevents rust from forming and maintains proper protection from heat, wind and rain.

6 - Make sure to use the right products for roof holes and leaks. Elastomeric sealants, such as Primero Elastomeric Sealants, are perfect for such types of repairs because they are elastic and do not crack or melt and they can withstand extreme UV rays of the sun.

7 - For new roofs, seal roof nails before painting. This ensures that point of entries for water is sealed. Roof nails and joints are critical areas since these are the usual entry points of water where rust forms first and this is where water seeps in that can damage ceilings, walls and furniture.

Hawken added, “maintain your roof regularly and properly and keep your roofing repair costs to a minimum. A roof that is properly maintained canlast a lifetime.”

Therainyseasonhasstarted! It’s necessary to give a few tips on lawn care during the rainy season. With the few rains we’ve had recently, the lawns have started ‘greening up’. Anyone who can apply the following tips, will definitely have a lush lawn.

This is time to top dress the lawn. This involves mixing equal parts of soil and well rotted cow manure together, and spreading it on the lawn. For additional results, a cup of urea can be added to the mix. With the regular rains, this encourages fresh growth of grass, and the new grass that peeks out underneath the mixture will be thick, rich and green. The kind of lawn you want to lie on.

Before this is done, all weeds must be uprooted. The best way to do this is to get down on your hands and knees and uproot the weeds with a hand trowel. The roots and possibly the seeds, must come out. Otherwise, the top dressing will also allow the weeds to grow faster than the cultivated grass. However, if you’re looking for a quick fix, application of urea will turn the lawn nice and green. However, after two mowings, the lawn will revert to how it was before. We usually only recommend this if the garden is going to be used for a party, and there’s no time to wait for the organic treatment to take effect.

During the rainy season, lawns with Portharcourt grass should be mowed weekly; axonoppus compressus (shade or water) grass should be mowed every ten days, and zoysia (carpet grass) monthly.Make sure the blades of the lawn mower are sharp, and that the lawn mower isn’t set too low, to guarantee a fine turf.

Green

Howtoredesignyourhomeinawaythat’seco-friendly.Eco-designisn’tjustgoodfortheenvironment,it’sgoodforyourwallet.

Green home design uses renewable resources that conserve water and energy, don’t harm the environment and ultimately end up saving you money. The following green home design ideas reduce your carbon footprint, while increasing your home’s value and the size of your bank account.

Use eco-friendly doors and windowsWhile a front door with a window adds light to an entryway, it also allows warmth and insulation to escape. Opt for a front door without windows and make sure it is made of eco-friendly wood, a recyclable material that is more energy-efficient than other materials.Typically, homes lose approximately 30 percent of heat and air-conditioning energy a month due to windows that are not ecologically designed.

Choose environmentally-friendly sidingOpt for wood, aluminum or stucco siding as a green home design option. Avoid PVC vinyl siding as it releases toxins and is not biodegradable or reusable.

Select natural gas fireplacesNatural gas fireplaces are the best choice for green interior design. Burning wood releases harmful toxins into the air.

Use green roofing materialsLook for an eco-friendly roof. One such ecological design option is a roof made of aluminum metal, a material that is naturally heat-resistant and can be perpetually reused.

Heat and air-condition your home using renewable energyInstalling solar panels is a popular green home design idea that both reduces energy consumption and creates energy for use. While solar panels are initially expensive to install, they increase the resale value of your home and decrease the amount of your monthly electricity bill.

Heat your water with a tankless system or solar energyThe greenest of homes use energy-efficient water heaters, such as solar, gas and tankless water heaters. Your energy bill will be reduced by more than half, and you will always have hot water on hand.

Colour your walls with natural paintsGreen interiors start with paint that is free of volatile organic compounds (VOC’S) Natural paints made of plant oils, extracts and minerals are eco-friendly and safe. Also look for low-VOC or zero-VOC paint.

Green your plumbingAvoid PVC, a plastic that contains harmful chemicals, and opt instead for clay as a green home design option for underground pipes. Zinc, galvanized steel and aluminum are green alternatives for piping above ground.

Summer Berry Meringue Roulade This light and sweet dessert makes a magnificent, festive centre-piece, achieved relatively simply. Guaranteed to become everyone’s favourite!

You will need:5 Egg whites at room temperature (large and free range)1/2 cup of Caster Sugar1/2 cup of chopped Macadamia Nuts (or chopped toasted Hazelnuts)400mls of Whipping Cream4 tablespoons of Icing sugar for the cream 1 cup (or more) of Fresh Mixed Summer Berries such as:Raspberries, Blueberries, Loganberries, Sylvan Berries, Kerri Berries.Cornflour for dustingSwiss roll tin, baking paper, cooking sprayPre heat oven to 190oC

For the Meringue:Beat the egg whites for 3 minutes, until soft peaks, add the caster sugar and continue beating for 6 minutes. Whilst the egg whites are beating, take a Swiss roll tin/baking tray - line with baking paper, spray with cooking spray and sprinkle heavily with cornflour all over bottom and sides. Evenly spread the meringue mixture in the baking tray. Sprinkle with the chopped nuts and bake in the oven for 10-11 minutes. After 11 minutes take out of oven - lay a clean tea towel over meringue holding the sides of the tray, turn tea towel and tray upside down to turn meringue out onto tea towel. Remove tray and carefully lift off baking paper. Leave for about 8 minutes while you make the filling

For the Cream Filling: Whip the cream until really stiff, add the icing sugar and a couple of drops of vanilla essence. Spread evenly over the meringue - sprinkle the berries on top of the cream and using the tea towel gently roll up the meringue on the long side - taking care not to wrap too tightly or it will split. Slide onto the serving platter and refrigerate until serving time. Decorate with strawberries and chocolate truffles.

Deena dispels any suggestions that his cuisine is strictly Indian. He is a proudly South African chef and Aarya’s menu will reflect this. “Our menu draws from all the diverse South African cuisines. It will reflect the South African nation and what the MasterChef competition was all about, which was bringing people from diverse cultures and backgrounds together.”

Every detail is designed to give diners an experience to remember. Aarya is also a next generation interactive restaurant, representing a ‘theatre of cuisine’ from which the extensive range of dishes is showcased. Get Glowing skin for summer

It’s finally Summer, when routines relax and the living gets easy

Summer is also the season when skin gets the most exposure. If you’ve been neglecting your skin all Winter, don’t worry!

Here are a few tricks to protect and pamper your skin so that you’re ready for the sun. Follow each step below for glowing skin and you’ll be ready to pull out your favourite Summer dress in no time flat.

1 Slather on the sunscreen: Choose products that provide broad-spectrum protection (they block both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays with a minimum (SPF) of 15. Apply sunscreen liberally (at least a one-ounce shot-glass-size amount) before you go outside; reapply every two hours and always after swimming. And don’t let those clouds fool you - apply sunscreen every single day!

2 Bring on the balm: Lips are susceptible to skin cancer too, so be sure to wear a broad-spectrum sun-protective lip balm with an SPF of at least 15 to keep lips sun-safe and supple.

3 Switch to Summer makeup: Trade liquid foundation for a lighter, mineral-based powder with a minimum SPF of 15. Skip the creamy blush and instead go for a natural-looking glow with a touch of bronzing powder. Use waterproof mascara for streak-free swimming, and ditch that lipstick for a dab of tinted gloss.

4 Go for the faux: Minimize your chances of wrinkles, age spots, and skin cancer by skipping the suntan altogether and opting for a sunless self-tanner, spray tan, or airbrushing.

5 Exfoliate regularly: Sun, sand, sweat, and sunscreen only increase the amount of dead skin cells that build up on your face and body. Slough them off with exfoliating scrub or loofah a few times each week. (A beautiful bonus: Exfoliating will also help your self-tanner go on more evenly and prevent streaking.)

6 Practice smart shaving: Short shorts and sundresses mean more frequent shaving sessions, and that can irritate and/or dry out

skin. This season, be sure to replace your razor often, shave only after you’ve been in the shower for a few minutes (when your hairs will be softer), use a moisturising shaving cream or gel, rinse thoroughly, and moisturise immediately afterwards.

7 Hydrate your Body with a Summer-Scented Lotion: Nothing spells Summer more than a light refreshing fruity lotion. Make sure you apply right after you dry off from your shower. You need to seal in the moisture your body just soaked in.

8 Don’t Forget Your Feet: It’s sandal season ladies. Either go and get a pedicure, or give yourself an at-home pedicure. You scrub off the dead dry skin to reveal your sandal ready feet. Nothing is worse than seeing dull dry feet inside cute sandals. It doesn’t have to be a big ordeal. Keep a foot scrub and file in your shower and scrub your feet a few times a week. You’ll notice a big difference in the softness of your feet.

Use these 8 simple strategies for skin care in summer and you’ll have the best-looking - and the healthiest - skin on the beach!

Getting good, nutritious meals while on holiday is not always easy – but not impossible.

This summer, when travelling to the cottage, campsite or beach, or on a long road trip, remember that simple is always better. Here are some tips for healthy and safe eating away from home.Car trips are a popular summer pastime for many South African families. But even though meals on the road may not be on schedule and may require more planning and ingenuity than home-cooked meals, you don’t have to sacrifice your health.

To avoid falling into the fast-food trap, keep healthy drinks and snacks in the car. Kid-favourite treats that travel well include pretzels, bagels, apples, bananas, baby carrots, granola bars and trail mix with nuts and raisins (or any dried fruit). Keep a stocked cooler with lots of ice packs inside your car. You can haul out the cooler at a rest stop or park, which typically have picnic areas.

It’s an opportunity to stretch your legs – a good idea to prevent blood clots. If you’re on a long trip, you may still have to stop at a restaurant for a full meal. The trick is to stick to salads and grilled (not fried) items. If burgers and hot dogs are the only items on the menu, avoid sauces and mayos that add extra calories. And ask for the salad dressing on the side.

Living on the road and mostly out of a cooler – even one stocked with healthy choices – doesn’t mean you won’t develop a sweet

Afruitlovedbyall…Banana is very much a staple fruit of India. One of the great things about bananas is that it is not only delicious but is also cheap and available throughout the year unlike the other fruits.

Banana is a fruit which is still very casually consumed for its taste, texture and a feeling of fullness unlike other fruits which are eaten due to their much known healthbenefits.Themassesdefinitelypreferitduetoitslowcost.

With whatever feeling it might be consumed, banana is nutritious and a wholesome fruit. This is a much lesser recognised fact. Except for its limitations for weight loss and diabetes, like other fruits this one too deserves high regards.

diabetic Footwear...

Healthy living

Understanding Diabetic feet for the sufferer is key in the maintenance and well-being of his or her foot. Once a diabetic is receiving regular insulin/medication (under managed supervision) he or she may not be aware of the damage which may have occurred beforehand. Sometimes the foot is the first indicator of diabetic issues. The feet are the furthest part of the anatomy from the heart and hence circulation is not as efficient in these areas.

With heart muscle functionality being effected by the onset of Diabetes, micro-vascular and neurological deterioration specifically in the extremities (feet) is a reality that has to be effectively dealt with.

44 | SUMMER | NORTHSIDE MAGAZINE | www.thenorthside.co.za

.The lack of oxygenated blood flow to the extremities (feet) can result in micro-vascular deterioration. Look out for discolouration of the toes..Sweaty feet, hot and cold sensationsare factors that should not be ignored and require the expert opinion of an endocrinologist, specialist physician or general practitioner. Feet that cannot cool naturally have a higher chance of bacterial infection..Increased numbness and decreased sensation (pain) indicates that the diabetic often cannot feel discomfort from ill-fitting or sub-standard footwear, which could result in an infection that is difficult to control / heal. Feet that have poor circulation / sensation, are particularly

susceptible to infection from minor abrasions. These can be extremely difficult to treat, resulting in severe ulceration and in certain cases may require amputation. Untreated ulcerated diabetic foot (see below).

Unique feet footwear selectionAdvice for diabetics

The following features and benefits are of primary importance to the well-being of the diabetic foot when selecting suitable footwear:

1. A breathable leather upper built on an extra-depth straight last, accommodates most foot types. Theshoe is specifically made to allow easy entry into the shoe. The toe-box protects the foot against external abrasion. Lace-up and or Velcro straps will assist in harnessing the foot. Hot feet may swell excessively, thus requiring additional width and lacing options.

2. The linings are breathable and seamless, thus allowing warm vapour off the foot, and reducing any

chance of internal abrasion. These factors increase foot comfort and protection against injury.

3.There are two removable footbeds (innersoles), the first being a thin sponge / foam liner which can be removed to increase the volume of the shoe as the foot swells during the day. The second thicker liner is a combination of foam and Plastozotte, which increases cushioning and reduces discomfort.

4. The sole unit is made of Direct Injection moulded polyurethaneor Compression Moulded EVA (best materials for cushioning & shock absorption). In the case of controlled diabetes, footwear must offer stability via internal stabilising mechanisms within the midsole of the shoe. The outsole is wedged or flat (no heel) and is ideally made from rubber for improved traction and mobility. For ulcerated diabetic feet a softer less supportive option needs to be considered.

5. Wear loose knitted hosiery (socks) specifically made for diabetics, which increases breathability, reduces blistering and improves circulation.

6. It is vital to be accurately measured to ensure the length, width; depth & flex-point of the foot are taken into consideration. Shoes must be available in at least three width options (Medium; Wide; X-wide).

7. Orthotists & Podiatrists, who specialise in diabetic feet, can modify the shoes to suit the patient’s requirements, by moulding orthotics specific to the requirements of the diabetic foot and related conditions. The shoes must have removable sockliners (insoles) that are 4mm – 7mm in depth to accommodate the orthotics. See examples of suitable footwear below.

kerosene wick lamps produce both light and hazardous sootThe bright orange flames of kerosene wick lamps used in millions of impoverished households around the world are significant sources of global warming and pollutants linked to respiratory diseases, according to a new study.

One kilogram of black carbon, a byproduct of incomplete combustion that absorbs light and heats the atmosphere, produces as much warming in a month as 700 kilograms of carbon dioxide does in a century, the study said. “Kerosene wick lamps are among the most polluting devices on earth,” Tami Bond, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Illinois, said in an interview.

That’s one way of looking at the data in a new study that compares death rates among couples with and without children. After examining data on more than 21,276 Danish couples who tried to get pregnant, researchers calculated that women who gave birth to a child were four times more likely to be alive at the end of the study period compared with women who remained childless.

The benefit to men was smaller but still significant — those who fathered children were twice as likely to be alive compared with men who remained childless.

A Surprising Cause of Wrinkles

Not only do free radicals, sun damage, and bad genes cause you to get wrinkles, stress from divorce and financial stress can also be a contributor.Bad genes, sun damage, and free radicals aren’t the only things that do a number to your face. Turns out that getting divorced and using antidepressants can cause wrinkles, too. Both put an extra two years on the faces of women whose identical twin sisters were never divorced or never used the medication, according to a study in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Explanation? The stress of divorce may speed up aging; the drugs may cause facial muscles to relax and lose tone.

Whether you like it or not, your vehicle choice oftentimes speaks volumes about who you are.

Excuse me. I don’t mean to alarm you. But your car is talking. And I don’t mean that husky voice on your GPS system. Instead, your car is saying a lot about your attitude and your personality. Yes, we are what we drive.

Matter Over MindFor more than 20 years, Dr. Leon James at the University of Hawaii has researched and taught the psychology of driving. In our car culture, James says, drivers idealise their rides and even lend them human qualities. Under hypnosis, drivers will refer to their car as if it were a friend or lover. In everyday life, owners name their cars and talk to them. And whether the car is racy or outdoorsy, owners seek attributes that mirror their self-image.

“People construct an ideal in their mind of the perfect car, and those attributes are transferred to its driver as well,” James said, noting how negatively we associate the drivers of dilapidated or dirty cars. Some of us get so offended we’ll deliver a hand-scrawled scolding, strangely written from the car’s point of view: Wash Me.

Whether this driving ideal has much to do with reality is pretty much beside the point. The obvious disconnect is with SUVs, which are forever being shown conquering the wilderness and clambering up mountainsides, even if most owners would hesitate to conquer the curb at the shopping mall.

Car StereotypesSpeaking of sport utes, we’ve all seen people go apoplectic at the sight of a Hummer, ascribing all sorts of nasty personality traits to the guy behind the wheel. You might say you’re only mad because he’s guzzling gas, but I’m not so sure. Plenty of SUVs, or sports cars for that matter, drink as much fuel, but get a free pass. It’s the Hummer’s commando styling and in-your-face attitude that gets a person’s dander up.

During the Ford Explorer rollover scandal, G. Clotaire Rapaille, the French anthropologist and auto-industry marketing guru, asserted that SUV owners were more vain and self-absorbed, and less likely to be community-oriented. As psychology, Rapaille’s thesis was carelessly overstated, of course. The charge that an SUV was proof of narcissism could be as easily applied to anyone who buys a Ferrari, a mansion or a designer handbag.

Most of us realise that car stereotypes are just that. Just because Golf cabriolets are sort of cute, and women like them, doesn’t mean the guy who drives one isn’t manly. More likely, he’s secure enough in his masculinity to enjoy his little convertible. Yet while it’s wrong to generalize, it doesn’t prevent us from trying. C’mon, admit it: When you See a 4 x 4, or a Bentley, it’s hard not to speculate about its driver. Especially after they’ve just cut you off.So with tongue firmly in cheek, here are what some popular rides say

about you:

Toyota PriusWe get it. You love the planet like Tom loves Katie on Oprah. Tell you what — I’ll acknowledge your superior consciousness when you stop driving 80 in the fast lane.

HummerGotta hand it to you. You don’t give a three-ton truck about what other people think. That’s the attitude that tamed the Old West, that built the auto industry, that barged into Iraq to keep that oil...um, never mind.

MINI Cooper (urban dweller)You’ve got the haircut, the clothes, a taste for obscure bands and obscure coffee blends. What car could possibly make the cut in that

hip dictatorship you call a neighborhood?

MINI Cooper (suburban dweller)“Oooh, honey, isn’t that just the cutest thing?”

Mazda 323You have a sense of humour. And you’re contemplating suicide.

BMW“My [insert noun] is better than yours.”

Rolls-Royce“Please, tell me: What actually was so bad about colonialism?”

Lamborghini “This car is the most interesting thing about me.”

did you know your traffic Fines may be invalid? Many traffic fines issued since AARTO launched, have been reported to be flawed with common irregularities, thus causing many innocent people to receive invalid fines, summons and warrants of arrests. Many people have paid or for invalid fines and did not even know it.Many of these cases would never be successfully prosecuted in court, if challenged. The Metro Police have profited on these invalid fines as most of the public just pay their fines in fear.

Most of us only find out about a warrant of arrest issued to us once the police stop us in road blocks. AARTO has had few problems posting the notice of infringement letters for offences committed to the correct addresses, as their internal link up with the new eNatis database has not been a smooth integration. Hence many people find out that they have fines, summons or warrant of arrest issued against them when it’s too late.

The “warrant of arrest has been served on you notice” is sometimes sent either by postal mail, e-mail or via phone calls by local municipal court clerks informing people they are wanted for arrest and that they should hand themselves over to the authorities.Did you know that the majority of AARTO fines issued have flaws and often considered invalid. With the right legal knowledge and advice you can get your invalid fines cancelled legally.Do you want to know what the local prosecutors and Metro Police don’t want you to know about traffic fines? “Remember why you ride. Try not to focus on results only (which has its place) but at the end of the ride do it because you enjoy it.”

Professional mountain biker Brandon Stewart, pictured here with his wife, Bridgette, also a pro mountain biker, explains how he fell in love with mountain bike riding, divulges his training routine and reveals what his winning motto is. How did you get hooked on mountain bike riding?I attended a championship at Cedar College right near my house and just remember being in complete awe of how much fun you could have racing a bike.

What do you feel is your greatest biking accomplishment so far?I’m one of eight people to have completed all nine Cape Epics, and have also won a stage in each of the world’s biggest international stage races

(Cape Epic, Trans Alp and BC Bike race). It is also gratifying to now own and manage my own race team. This is something I have worked-towards my entire career, and with the help of Itec Connect and its MD, Gavin Meyer, this goal has become reality.

Walk us through your typical training routine for an event such as Bush and Berg.I do some speed work and intervals, and make sure I am well rested.

Do you have advice for mountain bikers who are just getting started?Mountain biking is a great sport and while it may feel really tough in the beginning, always set yourself achievable goals. Consistency in your training is also key. Remember why you ride and try not to focus on results only (which has its place) but at the end of the ride do it because you enjoy it.

Pilates: Help for lower-back PainHave you experienced back pain at one time or another? Have you been told to strengthen your abdominal muscles to fix a back problem? While traditional crunches strengthen the outer layers of the abdominal musculature, they bypass the deep support structures of your back.

This can place the lumbar spine in too much flexion and may even worsen your back pain, depending on what your original physical problem was. By training the deep stabilizers of the lumbar spine, pain can be alleviated and you’ll be able to return to everyday activities sooner.

Pilates can help; its major focus is to strengthen the deep stabilizers of the spine and is beneficial if you are recovering from low-back injuries or experiencing low-back pain. However, first get your physiotherapist’s blessing before embarking on a new exercise plan.

How to Motivate your child towards attainable GoalsBy Brett Peers

Recently I met with a 15-year-old boy to talk about his future. He was getting into trouble at school and on the brink of failing all his subjects. When we discussed his career goals, he stated that he wanted to be a mixed martial arts pro or a fire fighter. Had he taken any classes related to this goal, such as Karate? No. Did he have any plans to? Not at all. Was he involved in a junior fire fighters programme? No chance. He seemed to think he was so awesome and strong that one of these things would just happen when the time was right. Look at it this way: when children aren’t held accountable for putting in the effort to reach their goals, or even to simply meet their responsibilities, most will be perfectly okay with doing the bare minimum to get by.Parents get frustrated with their child’s wishful thinking, procrastinating and apparent lack of motivation because very often, kids aren’t putting in the effort to achieve the goals they’re expressing. As the old saying goes, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” It’s also a ripe area for power struggles. You might have responded to your child by pushing, nagging and threatening in hopes of getting him to do something, anything that will get him moving in the right direction. Chances are, the more you push your child to work for a goal, the more he digs his heels in and resists you. As resistance increases, so does your anxiety about your child’s future. The family anxiety cycle is set into motion. How to Challenge Wishful ThinkingI truly believe that you must hold strong to the fact that your child’s dream of being an actress or professional rugby player does not give them a free pass to slack off during their primary school and high school years. It’s important to support your child’s dreams and offer ways to explore and develop their talents and interests while at the same time providing a firm structure at home that holds her accountable to the academic standards you expect her to achieve. In addition, parents can challenge this wishful thinking in their children by letting them know (without lecturing) that it’s very normal for teens, as well as adults of all ages, to change their mind at least a few times when choosing a career. This is the reason why they still need to

participate actively and responsibly in their education and why you have the rules and standards that you do.What’s most effective, though, is for parents to coach and educate their children. You can do this through some basic research, and then teach your child how to set a goal. The last piece of the puzzle is to establish some guidelines for goal progress-monitoring.

1. Research and Explore. If the goal you want to set is related to your child’s general participation in homework or how he treats others in the home, go ahead and skip to point 2 below. Otherwise, it might help to talk to your child about her wishes and dreams and help her to learn more about her areas of interest by doing internet searches. Try to make it a fun thing that is more about exploring both of your interests rather than a chore or punishment. In other words, look up your job or a job you used to dream of as a teen.2. Set a goal.Ask your child to set a goal that is related to an area of interest or a change you would like to see in his behaviour. Remember that children, even in adolescence, can have a difficult time setting goals on their own. If your child doesn’t even want to do any homework at all, start small. Your child should contribute when establishing the plan and the incentives. As a school guidance counsellor, when I help my students with goal-setting, they often start off with an action plan that includes something vague like “I’ll work harder.” That’s great, but it doesn’t have enough substance to carry your child through to the finish line. I help my students by asking, “When you’re working harder, what will I see you doing that will tell me you are working harder?” Goals need to have an action plan that is specific, observable, measureable, and realistic.Above all else, keep the plan very simple. Often there will be several steps involved that take place over a long period of time. To avoid overwhelming your child, identify the very first step your child needs to take and start there. Then move forward one step at a time. For example, if your child wants to be a professional musician, perhaps you work on practicing daily. If your child’s goal is related to a certain school subject, the goal could be to spend an extra 15 minutes studying that subject each day. For some of you the goal will simply be to do the homework for once. Again, keep it simple and don’t go overboard here.3. Monitor the goal.Once you and your child have decided what she will be working on, it could help to have it in writing. I would also recommend setting up regular progress-monitoring meetings to talk about how it’s going.

How Will I Know It’s Working? How will you know that the new plan is working? The answer to this is simple. Again, if your child’s goal and action plan are specific, observable, measurable, and realistic, you will either see your child putting in the effort or not. If your child is still in couch-potato mode, you might want to double check your daily routine and make sure you have some structure in place that holds your child accountable for meeting her responsibilities and working toward her goal, such as electronics getting turned off until she’s studied for a certain amount of time. And remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Proof of Heaven By Eben AlexanderA Neurosurgeons Journey into the Afterlife

A SCIENTIST’S CASE FOR THE AFTERLIFEThousands of people have had near-death experiences, but scientists have argued that they are impossible. Dr. Eben Alexander was one of those scientists. The part of the brain that controls thought and emotion—and in essence makes us human—shut down completely. For seven days he lay in a coma. Then, as his doctors considered stopping treatment, Alexander’s eyes popped open. He had come back.Alexander’s recovery is a medical miracle. But the real miracle of his story lies elsewhere. While his body lay in coma, Alexander journeyed beyond this world and encountered an angelic being who guided him into the deepest realms of super-physical existence. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River.

Charity event

The sun shone and spirits were high as 88 corporate golfing enthusiasts swung into action for autistic children and their families in the 2012 North Side and Lenn Watson for Autism Charity Golf Challenge on November 20.

Twenty three fourballs took to the greens mid-morning in the blazing heat at one of Joburg’s premier golf courses, The Kyalami Country Club, in the first annual event which is hopefully going to become a favourite among LW Autism supporters. It was a wonderful day and even the extreme heat weather condition couldn’t dampen the incredible atmosphere! Bushlore Africa won the golf day in the challenge. The players received a luxury holiday gift voucher donated by Melody Eggar from Winchester Marketing.

The LW Autism Foundation extend our warmest appreciation and sincere thanks to all the golfers, sponsors and supporters who participated to make this a special and successful first year. Golfers and guests alike were treated with one of the best live

entertainment bands in South Africa - Werner Ferreira. The day was concluded with a trick-shot show and flight simulator by Mike Scholz (who is just excellent at what he does) and the evenings MC, dinner, and an auction which created a lot of excitement and entertainment as the guests tried to outbid each other followed by prize-giving. The North Side team pulled out all the stops to make this very special fund-raising event a huge success. The highlight of the day undoubtedly being the many people, professional (Mike) and amateur golfers getting behind us. The North Side and Lenn Watson for Autism CHARITY GOLF CHALLENGE will be an annual event to look forward to with The North Side magazine and the LW Autism Foundation working in partnership towards an even bigger outcome in 2013!

Sharon Stadler of Paulshof has such a beautiful verge that it is not unusual for her to find complimentary notes at her gate. Sharon’s eye-catching verge brings joy to her neighbours and visitors to the area alike. This year, her colourful and lovingly manicured verge received the ultimate accolade when she was awarded joint first place in the 2012 Pam Golding Properties’ Outstanding Verge Competition in the Fourways/Dainfern area.

Commenting on her achievement Sharon said that it was a special and unexpected honour to be a joint winner in the Pam Golding Properties (PGP) Outstanding Verges Competition. “The competition is a splendid idea that encourages homeowners to make an extra effort to improve the exteriors of their properties while beautifying their neighbourhoods. Nothing gives me greater joy than to see someone admiring and enjoying our garden.”

André Delport, Chairperson of Camargue, a complex in Northriding, has had the coveted PGP Outstanding Verge Competition prize in his sights for the past year. Camargue was the runner up in the competition in 2011 and this year André was

determined to secure the big prize for the complex. “The residents of Camargue are delighted to have been joint winners. It really makes the hard work that we put into the exterior of the complex in recent years all worthwhile,” he notes.

“The competition is a wonderful initiative that encourages us all to put that extra effort into the exterior of our properties. Interestingly I have noticed that our neighbouring complexes have been putting greater energy into beautifying their verges ever since we started improving ours. Attractive exteriors show that a complex is well run and this helps attract high calibre residents while improving the value of the individual units. “The joint winners have truly outstanding verges and PGP congratulates them on their magnificent efforts,” says Pam Golding Properties (PGP) Fourways/Dainfern area manager, Jason Shaw. “Both of these properties appealed to the judges and we couldn’t pick a winner so we decided that they should both share top spot in the competition.” Shaw says that with 70 really excellent entrants the community has clearly shown great enthusiasm for the competition this year. “It has been gratifying to see the initiative grow from strength to strength,” he adds. “The response from both individual homeowners and those within complexes has been tremendous.”

According to Shaw the PGP Outstanding Verge Competition is held annually in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs in order to encourage people to beautify their verges. He says that while verges create an important first impression on visitors to a suburb and can even impact property prices, they are often overlooked. The competition seeks to encourage homeowners to consider the importance of the appearance of their verges and to take pride in their neighbourhoods.

“Attractive verges not only improve individual homes, they assist in making neighbourhoods appealing while engendering a sense of mutual respect and community. The competition aims to encourage the people of the northern suburbs to consider how their environments impact on their lives and indeed, on their property values. It is also always rewarding to see residents have fun and be creative with their gardens.”

Shaw says that the verges entered into the competition are judged on a number of criteria. Judges look at the overall attractiveness of the garden as well as consider how innovatively plants and features such as rock formations, stone carvings, water features and other elements are used. Other aspects to be considered are whether the garden is indigenous or has its own unique theme. Shaw points out that each verge is judged on its own merits. The winners each receive R10 000 to assist them in further developing their gardens.

“Next year we will make it even easier to get involved: homeowners will be able to give us a call at any time during the year when they feel their verge is looking at its best and we will come and photograph it and enter it into the competition. Different gardens are at their most attractive at various times of the year and we feel it is important to accommodate seasonal conditions.

Teeming with Big Game, Mjejane Game Reserve is a 4000ha Big 5 eco-extension of the popular Biyamiti region of the KrugerNational Park. Fences with the Kruger have been dropped and you can now own a slice of this magnifi cent game reserve which not only shares 10km of spectacular Crocodile River frontage with the Kruger but also falls under its conservation management policy. Mjejane, a settled land claim, is only 4 hours from Gauteng and less than 60 minutes drive from Nelspruit and Kruger Mpumulanga International Airport.
