Publisher’s Foreword

6 |AUTUMN | NORTHSIDE MAGAZINE | www.thenorthside.co.za

As you’re reading this, many of you will be making plans for the first long weekend of the season, do check out our Travel section for some great local travel destinations. For me, Easter weekend signals the start of a new season, a rebirth, if you like, as

autumn begins to tint the trees and shrubs. It’s a fantastic opportunity to catch up with friends and family, and tends to be far more laid back than the stress of Christmas.

Can it really be only three months since the year began? So much seems to have happened already – but I know it won’t last, the year will quickly gain momentum and will suddenly seem to be whizzing by. I heard someone argue on the radio recently that the reason why time seems to pass more quickly as we get older is that the longer we live, the smaller fraction a year is of the total time we have lived,

and therefore each year seems shorter. An ingenious argument, I think.Hopefully we are all ready for the coming autumn and like a particularly forward-thinking squirrel we have made preparations to help us

all through it. First of all we have launched our North Side website and we have been bowled over by the feedback we’ve had.

But here at The North Side we do not go on for laurel resting. So we are expanding our What’s On offerings with a weekly rundown of the best shows in Jo-burgs Northern suburbs, bi-weekly guides and updates to the website as well as a look at the happening’s in our

marvellous burbs. Like a doting dad we are increasingly proud of our young magazine so do keep an eye out for a few more new features as the year ticks on.

Meanwhile work is well under way for Issue 5 of our magazine, and again there’s change in the air, so look out for the finished articles heading your way mid-year. Enough carrot-dangling for one month we feel.

May your Easter be peaceful, happy and full of blessings.

Welcome to the 1st magazine of 2013, as we leave last year behind and look forward to Easter

Happy Easter

My family and I are proud members of the German Country Club in Paulshof, we absolutely love the game of tennis! Pictured here are my children, Cooper and Bailey during a tennis lesson with Pieter Becker, one of South Africa’s finest tennis coaches, at the club. And here I am, also pictured below, about to be schooled by Pieter during a great coaching lesson recently. Truly one of the best sports to take up as you can play from a small

child, right up into your golden years.

Sms abuse to 49040 to donate R15

The Lighthouse Run is an incredible and heartwarming mission undertaken byfour female athletes, all having been touched by abuse directly or indirectly.

They set out to run a marathon a day, for 42 days touching 42 Lighthouses, from Umhlanga Rocks to Paternoster along the South African coastline, starting on 17 November 2012 and finishing on 29 December 2012.

THE LIGHTHOUSE RUNThe community service team accompanied the runners and did sessions of informative talks, counselling and support for local havens for the victims and perpetrators of abuse. They achieved this momentous run of love and have now begun implementing Phase 2.

Phase 2 The establishment of a fund to cover 3 basic needs victims of abuse have; Logistical, Legal and Psychological assistance. Logistical support is critical for any victim; a safe house and the ability to feed oneself. Legal support would cover the obtaining of restraining orders, legal assistance around children and

Netcare Sexual Assault Centres

The hours immediately after a rape have a huge impact on the recovery process. Friday, 15 February 2013 The brutal violation and murder of 17-year-old Anene Booysen in Bredasdorp has prompted debate and united South Africans against a crime that happens every four minutes in this country. It also illustrated how little is known about sexual assault.

“Rape is a crime that leaves its victims feeling violated, powerless and hopeless. Survivors of rape often don’t know what to do,” says Mande Toubkin, Netcare’s general manager emergency, trauma, transplant and corporate social investment. Since 1998, Netcare has been a major catalyst behind a countrywide initiative to establish the necessary protocols and equip health professionals with the vital skills and knowledge to ensure that therights and dignity of sexual assault survivors are not compromised. Netcare has 37 SexualAssault Centres in operation throughout the country. Dedicated toproviding professional healthcare and compassion to survivors of rape, thesespecialist units have treated over 8 600 patients since their inception, 86% of whom were female and 5% men. The Netcare Sexual Assault Centres offer freecounselling to men, women and children immediately after a rape and for a year thereafter, irrespective of whether the rape survivor is medically insured or not. If necessary, anti-pregnancy medication and antiretroviral therapy arealso offered. “Sexual assault survivors, whether they are adults or children, have been hurt and violated in a deeply personal

way, that infinite care should be taken to ensure that the treatment they receive does not add to their trauma,” asserts Toubkin. The hours immediately following sexual assault are crucial, observes Toubkin. “How you behave, the decisions you make, the people you talk to will have a tremendous impact on the recovery process and the successful prosecution of the rapist. Every person should have some idea of the best procedure to follow in such a situation.” For the names and contact details of the Netcare Sexual Assault Centre nearest to you, please visit www.netcare.co.za.

Durban Wednesday, 23 January 2013 Priscilla and Brendon Noziac, the lucky Durban couple who last year unexpectedly received an all expenses paid birth at the private Netcare Umhlanga Hospital, celebrated the birth of their little baby, Alaina Francoise, on Monday. Alaina is the couple’s first baby, and they could barely contain their excitement at the arrival of the new member to their family, says Shaun Ryan, General Manager of the hospital. Alaina, who weighed in at a healthy 3.35kg, was delivered by gynaecologist and obstetrician, Dr Carlos Hartmann. Priscilla has been in Dr Hartmann’s care since September last year. “We are absolutely delighted at the birth of our little bundle of joy,” says an overjoyed Brendon. “Priscilla was admitted to the hospital last Friday night with high blood pressure and I was a little concerned. However, the birth went well and we have been truly blessed with a healthy baby.” “Monday was an emotional day not only for my wife and I, but our families as well,” he continues. “Everyone had been looking forward to the birth. We have given Alaina her second name Francoise in honour of my sister. Francoise was a double lung and heart transplant recipient who passed away in 2007. She is greatly missed and I know she would have given anything to be here with us today.” The couple, who do not have medical aid and struggling to raise funds necessary for their child’s delivery, were given the all expenses paid birth by Mandy and Connor von Berg of Kloof. The Von Bergs won the paid forbirth as part of a prize in a competition at last year’s MamaMagic Baby Expo in Durban. Priscilla and Brendon, who were runners up in the competition, expressed their gratitude to Mandy, Connor and Netcare Umhlanga Hospital.

“Last year Mandy and Connor called and offered us the all

Netcare Umhlanga Hospitalexpenses paid birth,” adds Brendon. “They had already made prior arrangements for the birth of their own baby and said they did not need the prize. Priscilla and I had only recently been married and were very concerned about how we were going to afford the birth. The prize was a great gift that provided us with the opportunity of having our baby come into the world in a leading private maternity hospital.” Netcare Umhlanga Hospital arranged for the two couples, whose destinies were brought together by the common bond of pregnancy, to get together after the birth of Alaina. “It was a lovely experience,” says Priscilla. “Mandy and Connor’s baby, Ella is already ten weeks old and is beautiful. We are so grateful to them and wish them all the very best for the future.” Priscilla and Brendon also thanked Shaun Ryan, the general manager of Netcare Umhlanga Hospital, who supported the transfer of the prize to them. “We are obliged to Shaun, Dr Hartmann and all the hospital staff who have been involved in taking care of us these last months. We have been so well looked after at the hospital and cannot express just how grateful we are.” Shaun Ryan says that the staff and management of Netcare Umhlanga Hospital are thrilled at the birth of little Alaina Francoise and wish the family well.

“It was a grand privilege for us to have been a part of this heart warming story and we are glad we could assist in making this wonderful couple’s dream come true.”

Netcare Mulbarton Hospital Multi-million rand maternity facilities officially opened at Netcare Mulbarton Hospital Friday, 8 February 2013 The multi-million rand maternity ward and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) which officially opened at

Netcare Mulbarton Hospital on 7 February 2013, were established in response to a growing need by the communities of southern Johannesburg for quality maternity and paediatric services. According to Nellie Koen, general manager of Netcare Mulbarton Hospital, the maternity unit has been a much-needed addition to the hospital. The maternity facilities comprise a 20-bed maternity ward; three delivery rooms including two birthing baths for parents who wish to have a water birth, and a dedicated caesarean section theatre. The NICU has a total of eight beds, four of which are isolation beds. “The state of the art maternity amenities

have been purpose-designed to provide a streamlined service in a tranquil environment,” adds Koen. “The caesarean section theatre and delivery rooms are all situated within the labour unit while the NICU is next door. This means that the entire unit is self-contained. Accommodation includes five private rooms, a VIP room and five semi-private rooms, offering parents-to-be the opportunity to choose accommodation that will suit them best . Koen points out that the new maternity facility not only has the latest equipment but is also supported by medical practitioners with outstanding expertise and experience. Eight gynaecologists/obstetricians, five paediatricians, as well as a paediatric surgeon, paediatric pulmonologist

and a paediatric nephrologist are on hand to treat patients. The hospital already has a well-established 18-bed paediatric unit. Extensions to Netcare Mulbarton Hospital totalled R80 million, according to Koen. The maternity ward and NICU took approximately 20 months to complete and opened to the public in January 2013. Two babies were delivered that same day, says Koen.

One of the new mothers, Veronica Morapedi, was a guest of honour at the opening function. “Children are the key to the future of our country. We are committed to assist parents in safeguarding the health of their children,” she concludes.

By Bruce Johnson

Whenever someone accuses you of something, confronts you about an issue, says something mean that’s meant to hurt you, or makes an unflattering comment about you, the natural instinct both of you will have in this life will be to retaliate and be defensive - which is exactly

why you have to fight those urges and do the opposite.

Very few people ever learn this lesson, but it’s invaluable. In fact, let me suggest a number of reasons why you’ll want to make the non-defensive choice.

1. You don’t want to let anyone control you.

Whenever you get defensive, you’re allowing the other person to control you and your emotions. You’re allowing them to get “under your skin.” You’re allowing them to control the

Never Be Defensive conversation. And you’re allowing them to control how you feel. Why would you ever want to do that?

2. There may be some truth in what they’re saying.

Whenever you get defensive, you immediately stop listening and start defending yourself and your actions - and that’s a problem. Even if someone has a bad motive for saying what they’re saying, that doesn’t mean there might not be something truthful in their comments.

Of course, if you’re too busy defending yourself, you’ll never hear what they’re saying—which means you’ll have missed a great opportunity for growth.

3.You never want to appear as a fool.

Solomon got it right when he said, “A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.” Proverbs 29:11.

Whenever you get defensive, you allow your anger to blind you—which then usually leads to conflict and words poorly spoken (because they haven’t been thought through), which then makes you the person in the wrong.

4. Being in control, is an act of maturity

and wisdom. Whenever you or I encounter someone who is unruffled by the comments or accusations of others, we instinctively think, “Now there’s someone who’s mature.” And isn’t that what you want people to say about you?I know it’s hard. Wanting to defend yourself is natural. But then again, maturity isn’t about doing what feels natural. It’s about doing what’s right. One of my favorite passages from Solomon comes from Proverbs 9:8-9 “Do not rebuke a mocker or he will hate

you; rebuke a wise man and he will love you. Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning.”Learning to not be defensive and to listen to what someone is saying (even if their motives are wrong) is what wise people do. If we get defensive, we never get to that point. So, what should you do?

Here are a few thoughts.1. Refuse to lash back. Force yourself to never attack back. Make it a rule. “Whenever someone attacks me, I won’t attack back.” Or, “Whenever someone confronts me, I won’t confront back.” Set it as a standard, and keep it.

2. Practice reflective listening.

This forces you to listen. “So, you feel _______ because for ________.” The first blank is for the emotion (angry, hurt,

frustrated, etc.) and the second for the action/behavior. “So, you feel angry because I didn’t show up on time again.”

3. Make being in control of your emotions

one of your life goals. One of the affirmations I repeat to myself virtually every day is, “I will be in control of my emotions, decisions, actions and thoughts—and will not give the power of these over to anyone or anything else.” Neither of you, nor I, can control anyone else. But we can control ourselves. So, make that a goal. And, if you ask me, one of the great tests of whether or not you own that goal is how you respond when someone attacks or accuses or confronts you.

Page 15: The North Side Autumn

14 |AUTUMN | NORTHSIDE MAGAZINE | www.thenorthside.co.za www.thenorthside.co.za |AUTUMN | NORTHSIDE MAGAZINE | 15

4. Force yourself to ask if there’s any truth in their statements. Whenever someone confronts me about something or accuses me of something, I always force myself to ask, “Is there some kernel of truth in what they’re saying that I need to hear?” Sometimes there isn’t. But frequently there is. So, don’t be defensive. Instead use this as a moment for yourself to evaluate how you can use this for your own personal growth.

Now, you may be wondering, “Is it ever okay to defend yourself?” Absolutely. But not in the heat of the moment. Being defensive and defending yourself are two different things. Defending yourself is about the truth and you should do that when you need to-but only when you’re calm and in control (and usually after you’ve had some time and space between the negative comments and your defense).

In addition, this skill isn’t only critical in your work and church lives, it’s also critical in your relationships with your family. In the future, when you’re married, and your future spouse confronts you about something, being defensive will only exacerbate the problem. Or in the future, when you have children, if they get upset with you about something (I know, hard to believe :-) if you get defensive, you’ll only exacerbate the problem. So, refuse to do that.

Instead, follow the four strategies above, and you’ll quickly defuse the situation. Then, once the emotions are out of play, you’ll be able to deal with the actual situation and be able to solve the problem ten times faster.Any way you add it up, the best strategy to use when someone accuses or confronts you is to never be defensive!

P.S. One last thought. Peter had some great advice about this using Jesus as an example, “When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats.

Instead he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.” 1 Peter 2:23. At the end of the day, it’s not your job to prove yourself to someone else. Instead, entrust yourself to your Father above and let Him right any wrongs on your behalf.

Your Motivation in Business and in Life StemsFromtheSameSource:You

By David Amerland

In our efforts to get a work/life balance we, and many of the ‘experts’ we listen to, make a distinction between ‘working life’ and ‘life’. Yet with so much of our life spent working and so much energy and passion going into our work, is it not more logical to assume that work is an integral part of life. One that can make us feel incredibly fulfilled when things are going right and totally lost when things are not so hot.

Work and life require the same ingredient to work: motivation. Without it we are simply caught up on a treadmill someone else set for us, going through the motions. When, however, we truly understand what we do, and why, even the most boring of work tasks acquires a special kind of beauty and that is both liberating and energising , producing an entirely new lot of possibilities for us.

It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your

Small, local businesses provide the life blood and character of a city, but so many of them have been hard hit by price undercutting and increased competition from major corporations and chains.

From restaurants, to shops, to service-oriented businesses, local business has taken a hit recently, but it isn't dead. Quite the contrary, too - not only is it alive and well, it's to your advantage to shop local instead of always going to that chain or mega store.

Supporting local businesses can be better for the economy at large, since cheaper products at major chains aren't always better. Often times, cheap corporate products are rife with issues, including cheaply-made, mass-produced goods, ethical issues in the production of those goods, or health problems associated with using or consuming them. Products made and sold by local businesses are strongly

made to last, with you - the business owner's neighbor - in mind.Related to the idea of cheap goods, it is a misconception that the large corporate chain offers the cheapest products on

Make that first impression count at your next business conference

First impressions especially matter at an event where you’re meeting dozens of industry professionals face-to-face for the first time.

You might have built a solid rapport with Michael over hundreds of phone calls and emails, but you’ll damage it instantly if you’re embarrassing to be around or make others uncomfortable with your poor presentation.

Don’t be the guy whose personal presentation and social skills are so poor he has colleagues second guessing their previous positive opinion of him.

The reality of conferences is that most people are there to network as much as they are to learn new things about their field. However useful the speeches and presentations are, the real value for a lot of folks is going to be the exchange of business cards. You want to look like a business card worth having.

the market. Small businesses and local organisations know their customers much better than the corporate chains, and offer deep discounts, loyalty programs, and other perks that you just won't get from a large corporation. Localisation breeds loyalty, which in turn breeds better and more competitive prices!

Unlike the faceless, emotionless corporate chain, small businesses care about you, and they remember and value your support and history. Local business owners are very well connected in the communities that they serve, and work hard to benefit the community positively and build bonds with their neighbors, who are also the people who purchase their products.

Local businesses also give a great feel and character to any neighborhood, complete with unique logos and signage, beautiful little shops, and less of that sterile, corporate environment that is so pervasive in over-planned communities. At the end of the day, it just makes sense to support local business.

Corporate chains do offer some products you will need, of course, and they will succeed as they have in the past, but there's more to creating a great community than shopping at the corporate chains. Local businesses are the heart and soul of every community in this

country, and provide the most tangible and obvious example of chasing the ’South African' dream. It's easy to do, great for your neighborhood, and better for your community. Shop local!

Looking sharp is your ticket to looking worthwhile.

A well turned-out man in a suit looks more important than someone in a pair of khakis and a polo shirt. And in a conference setting there’s actually some fairness to that — everyone knows going into it that they need to grab attention, and the man who dresses sharp is clearly someone who can evaluate a situation and come up with the right solution for it.

So by looking good you’re not just looking like a more valuable contact — you’re proving that you are a better businessman/woman than someone who didn’t bother.

START A SMALL BUSINESS

A successful small business offers the rewards of earning income far in excess of a salary, the freedom to be in control of your own destiny, social status and the satisfaction of providing jobs for others.

However, everything always seems easier than it really is, don't let your dream turn into a nightmare because you have not prepared properly.

To balance your work life with your personal life, whether you are self-employed or not, you need to take some time off. A great alternative to a week-long vacation is to take one or more weekday or weekend getaways that might last from one to three or four days. Make it a practice to get away from work on such excursions whenever you can.

Weekday or weekend getaways help one to get away just long enough to get a much needed rest without affecting your business and without breaking the bank. While you may not always in a position to do it, do try to set up a long weekend getaway every 4 months or so. Weekend getaways allows one to reconnect with your partner and children. One also feels refreshed and ready to return to work with some new ideas and a fresh outlook. There's something about autumn, the lure of the open road and the promise of a change of scenery that makes us want to load up the car and just go someplace.

The possibilities are endless: The Welgevonden Game Reserve makes for a superb great autumn or winter getaway.

The rolling wooded mountains cut by deep rocky ravines and majestic gorges make Welgevonden Game Reserve an evocative piece of Africa. Aptly meaning ‘well found’, this is a place of rare and rugged beauty, plentiful wildlife and prolific birdlife. Spectacular scenery and excellent game viewing make Welgevonden quite unlike anywhere else on earth. To visit here is to experience the spirit of true wilderness.

Welgevonden is home to over 50 different mammals, including the Big Five, and boasts one of the largest populations of white rhino on a private reserve anywhere in Africa. There are rare and unusual species too, such as brown hyena,

aardwolf and aardvark – all best seen at night. The grassy plains abound with antelope from the largest eland to the diminutive duiker, and cheetah, lion and leopard are always close by. It is the diversity of habitat on the reserve that encourages such a wide range of wildlife as well as over 250 bird species, including rare blue cranes.

At 37 500 hectares in size, Welgevonden Game Reserve lies in the Waterberg plateau, just north of Johannesburg. Here guests enjoy unlimited traversing through the reserve and experience an environment where biodiversity conservation and game

viewing are managed in harmony. Welgevonden protects an unique and special environment and the reserve’s management is deeply committed to ongoing conservation research and development.

The evocative wilderness area offers an exclusive, intimate experience of the African bush with only a limited number of guests having access to the reserve at any one time. No private vehicles are permitted, which ensures minimal human impact and the ultimate wilderness

experience. Historically, wildlife on the reserve has never been hunted so game viewing is always up close and personal. There is also ancient and delicate Bushman rock art on Welgevonden.

Welgevonden offers the discerning visitor something completely different. This is mountain bushveld with rivers running through it and sweeping views to far horizons. It’s high altitude, temperate climate and malaria free makes

Buying Oriental Rugs - A Beginner’s Guide

From Casablanca to Canton, carpets have been woven for a thousand years or more. Nomadic people, roaming the wilds of Central Asia’s mountains and high plateaus, developed techniques of knotting wool to make rugs. As the yarn was twined together, magical designs and symbols, as well as the natural beauty tribes would see around them, would be blended to create a unique array of pattern, texture and color.

These wandering clans, roving the wilderness of North Africa and Asia, extracted their rich hues of brown and red from walnut shells and pomegranate skins. Other craftsmen, working in the tranquil backstreets of fabled cities such as Fez and Istanbul, would experiment with exciting schemes or motifs.

Why an Oriental Carpet?A handmade Oriental carpet is as much a piece of furniture as a fine desk or a loved painting. A simple carpet can lend to a drab room a magical glow, creating a particular mood and ambience. Each carpet different from the next, has it’s own intrinsic character, it’s own special feel and unique design.

However, purchasing a carpet has always been something of a risky business. The experience is all too frequently shrouded with guesswork and luck. Questions such as: “Is this carpet good quality?”; “Is it synthetic?” or “Am I paying too much?” tend to crop up just as you hand over the traveller’s cheques.

Unscrupulous dealers with their smooth sales talk, baffling technical terms and unorthodox methods can transform what should be a pleasurable buying of a carpet into a frenzied nightmare. You can’t learn all there is to know in a few minutes, but we can certainly help you to become at least a little “rug-wise”. Pick up a few facts, act in a certain way in negotiations, and you will automatically sidestep many of the pitfalls.

Selecting the best rug for your home!

Before buying your rug, decide on the shape and size. A great way to visualise the rug in the room, is to use masking tape to define the area of the rug, or by laying sheets. Be sure to keep note of all your measurements before you go to the store.

Get the feel first

Another way around is to get a feel first. Before you set off to buy a carpet, you must prepare. One good method is to get a book about carpets. Flick through the pages and see what immediately appeals to you. If you are not in a great hurry, try leaving the book open for a couple of days at a certain page to see if the picture of a particular style fits the room. In any case, look at the pictures with great care. Examine the varying systems of pattern: you will immediately see that a carpet made in Baluchistan is very different from one crafted in Istanbul.

Rug Shapes and Sizes

The shape of your rug will firstly be determined by your particular taste and secondly by the room and area you are looking to place your rug. The size of your rug will be determined by the amount of space you have to work within your chosen room or area.In a particular situation, if you want to have only one rug for a room, it should cover at least one-third ofthe area ofthe floor.

* Rectangular - Rectangular rugs are the most common rugs in the world and are rectangular in shape varying in size. Rectangular rugs are suited to large areas, such as living areas and dining rooms.

* Runner - A runner rug is very long and narrow and rectangular in shape. Runners are most commonly used in hallways, stairways and entrances.

* Round - Round rugs are equal in length and width. Round rugs can be used in living areas under round coffee tables to add emphasis to the middle of the area.

* Oval - Oval rugs are quite uncommon and have no set standard sizing available.

* Square - Square rugs are equal in length and width. Square area rugs are ideal for square rooms.

* Odd Shapes - Often some odd shaped rugs are available, such as octagonal and hexagonal.

Handy Rug Laying Hints

For a rug that is defining an area, there should be no more than than two feet of empty rug extending out from behind the furniture. A rug used for defining is unifying the items placed around it if the rug is large enough to accommodate at least the front legs of each piece of furniture.

A rug for a dining room, should extend eighteen inches to twenty-four inches beyond the table, with generally an

eight-by ten-foot rug working in most living rooms and dining rooms. For small areas, such as coffee tables a six-by four-foot or a six-by nine-foot rug is sufficient.

Decorating Secrets Revealed

We asked designers to share some of their favourite tricks and ideas for putting together a beautiful space. Here, they reveal their top do’s and don’ts.

Don’t Design with Clichés

Timeless design is restrained, balanced, and doesn’t give in to the obvious. “When you live at the coast, you don’t have to have wall sconces made out of seashells. If you cross the line, your home can become a theme park. Instead, choose a sophisticated sandy palette for beachfront living. Aim to imply rather than to be explicit, so that you’re hopefully designing something that won’t embarrass you in 10 years time.

Don’t Be Afraid to Mix Design StylesMixing humble materials with more luxurious ones is a contemporary approach to great design.

Do Hang Artwork Together

Grouping framed pieces together makes a strong, lasting impression. For instance, by hanging six prints in a grid over the family lounge couch you get the impact of a much larger piece of art.

10Do Skimp Where You Can

Want to redecorate a room for less? Balloon shades are a smart alternative to traditional long curtains. Use them to create an affordable, romantic look in your home’s master bedroom. That’s three yards of fabric per window instead of 10 which makes them less expensive.

Don’t Divide a Small Space

Designer Carolyn Roehm wrapped her bed in the same floral fabric as her walls in order to unify the tiny space. “I didn’t want to chop it up visually. It’s the same with clothes when you’re short,” she explains. “And I like to turn small rooms into a cocoon.”

Do Consider a Monochromatic PaletteWant to create a serene space? Try using quiet neutrals throughout your home. Aim to have the biggest furniture in the room, such as the couches, to disappear or blend into the walls. For pop, add white accessories which will keep the room from feeling too bland, while still keeping the mood peaceful.

Do Incorporate Side TablesIntimate spaces make for a warmer, happier space. The key to getting one right? Make sure that every chair or couch has an accompanying side table. When you walk into a room and you see a little table or a stool pulled up to a chair, you immediately imagine curling up with a cup of coffee or a drink.

Don’t Hide Your TVHave a sleek flatscreen television? Put it on display. We no longer have to measure out niches or construct hideously huge mechanized ottomans at the foot of the bed that lift up the television like Dracula’s coffin lid. Newer models look just fine out in the open.

Page 33: The North Side Autumn

Interiors

32 |AUTUMN | NORTHSIDE MAGAZINE | www.thenorthside.co.za

Do Understand that Mixing Patterns Takes Practice

Making busy prints work together isn’t effortless, so go easy on yourself if you don’t get it right on your first try. Choose similar colours to tie the rug and wallpaper together. You just have to pull out your swatches, try things out, and trust your eye. If it’s hideous, try again. Still having trouble? This is why there are pro’s.

Do Make a Small Space Work for You

Make the most of the narrow space by extending cabinets all the way up to the ceiling, for example in a tiny kitchen or lounge. Glass fronts make it easy to spot specific items, as do deep drawers in lieu of lower cabinets.

at the Bar for 2013Wha t ’ s Ho tCocktails and MixologyAs we already know, craft cocktails are really heating up and getting more creative. This year, look for beer-based cocktails to start popping up on bars, as well as culinary cocktails that use fresh, local ingredients in addition to organic ingredients.

Get out your chemistry set, because molecular cocktails are also expected to see a huge spike in popularity. This exciting development in mixology bridges the gap from molecular gastrology, and involves using spherification methods as well as sprays, gels, and even foam to expand the flavor profiles and presentation of certain cocktails.

Carbonation Nation

New tools like the Perlini cocktail shaker and the iSi Soda Siphon have bartenders on a bubble kick. Adding fizz changes a cocktail’s texture and adds zip, English says.

While artisans of the molecular craft still do crazy stuff like caramelise cocktails with 1,500-degree pokers and chill glasses instantly with liquid nitrogen, we will be able to have our eye candy and actually drink it, too.

Meat at the Bar

The connection between butcher and bartender is getting closer. The dull bowls of peanuts and pretzels are being replaced at the bar with something you can sink your teeth into. Look for snacks from the realm of charcuterie and

chicharrones, says English.

Low Impact Liquor

Now that bar hopping has once again become the preferred alternative to clubbing, imbibers aren't looking to get hammered in two cocktails flat. Palatable spirits with low-alcohol ingredients have never been more accessible or trendy.

Slow Drinks, Faster

We all enjoy a fancy cocktail on occasion, but not when it requires a 20-minute wait. Smart, considerate bartenders are devising clever ways to get cool cocktails to you quicker. Some examples: serving batch cocktails like punch, putting mixed drinks on tap, and bottling popular menu items before bar service begins.

A Sparkling TreasureSterhuis Blanc de Blancs MCC is one of our favourite bubblies at the moment, it is very, very good. Crisp, clean and simply magical, this wine can be enjoyed with oysters, sushi or simply deliciously on its own.

Available from Bootleggers, Fourways Crossing around R129.

What a Difference Decanters Make Presenting wine in a stunning decanter offers a beautiful addition to the table, but beyond the beauty, there is a greater reward. Better tasting wine. Most wines ultimately benefit from the aromatic unfurling a good decanter provides.

To assure your wines are sufficiently aerated, open them before your guests arrive. A young wine requires a good hour or two in a decanter, while an older wine needs only 15 to 30 minutes to breathe.

The Noble Art of SabrageHave you ever seen someone open a champagne bottle with a sabre? The act is called sabrage, used for ceremonial occasions. The cork and the glass collar of the bottle are removed in one smooth move, leaving the neck of the bottle intact. Check out http://www.wikihow.com/Open-a-Champagne-Bottle-with-a-Sword

When performed correctly, as noted above on a suitably chilled bottle of Champagne, the cork and glass ring will fly away, spilling little of the precious wine and leaves a neat cut on the neck of the bottle. Now, the Champagne is ready to be enjoyed. The internal pressure (100 psi) of the Champagne bottle always ensures that no glass falls back into the bottle making it safe for consumption.

Of course, skinny jeanscontinuetobetrendy this season.

Skinnies are great for casual wearing, as well as for dressing up. Combine with high-heeled ankle boots, a dressy top and a tuxedo jacket – one of our favorite ways of wearing skinny jeans.

Let’s start with the pair ofcoatedjeans.

This pair of jeans pretty much reflects the hottest trend of the season – leather fashion (although not made from leather).

If you decide to wear something like this you can combine them with a tee, a pair of flat shoes and an elegant jacket.

Denimjackets

We all wore denim jackets in the 90s and it was cool, but then this piece of clothing somehow disappeared, and we have seen it occasionally through the years. However, it’s time to bring it back and make it a daywear classic.

Denim jackets don’t have to be boring, make them stand out by wearing them with items others would never dare to mix. Pair it with pants, fancy shirts and youthful tops, try it over an evening dress or a sexy blouse.

you need now!We must admit that we love summer more than autumn, mostly because of the weather, however autumn sure does come with great clothing!

It is much easier to layer and mix and match during the cooler months than during the hot and humid summer, in our opinion! So, with that in mind, we’ve been keeping our eyes and ears open for the latest and greatest in autumn fashion and below are the items that we will definitely be adding to our cupboards!

SkinCareTips:Renew&Recover

Hands up everyone who suffers from dry and uncomfortable skin as the cool weather rolls in? The key is to change your skin care like your wardrobe. Just as you wouldn't wear a tank top and flip-flops outside in cold weather, you don't want to use your light-weight summer skin care products as the temperature drops.

Summer and winter are two seasons in which extreme environmentalfactors prevail: the sun, the dry air and the snow can all take their toll on our skin. Spring and autumn, on the other hand, represent the perfect time to renew, to recover from previous environmental aggressions and emerge restored and refreshed whilst prepping the skin for harsher climates.

Here are 10 top skin care tips for autumn to keep you looking beautiful through the chill.

1.Gentle CleansingNow is the time to use a gentle cleanser that won’t strip your skin of its vital oil barrier. Harsh cleansers will only add to your frustration of dry skin that looks older. You will also want to avoid hot water when washing your face, instead stick with tepid or lukewarm water.

2.Ramp up hydrationAs the colder weather sets in, summer weather and lifestyle may well have stripped the skin of moisture, revealing fine lines and wrinkles.

Up your regimen’s level of hydration with an intensive hydrating mask at least once a week.

Switch to a richer moisturiser. If your skin remains dry then you may want to apply a thin layer of argan oil or a specialised facial serum under your moisturiser which will help retain moisture and promote a dewy, supple and youthful complexion.

3. Don’t Forget SunscreenSummer may be gone, but the sun is still there. Before you leave your house, apply a sunscreen with at least an SPF of 15 or

more. This will protect your skin from the elements. Alternatively, choose a product that combines a sunscreen with a moisturiser.

4. Slough off the old, bring on the smoothExfoliating your skin increases cellular turnover and allows your other skin care products to penetrate more easily giving them the opportunity to be more effective.

Craft beer

Have you ever stopped to think about what you’re drinking? Craft beer is brewed by artisans from the finest natural ingredients. You can’t rush craftsmanship, and that’s why our traditional brewing processes take up to eight weeks... not days. We believe in the quality of small batches and not the quantities of mega-production. We obsess about aroma and taste, not economies of scale. Our beers are unpasteurised, which allows for a fuller, richer taste.

Whatever the source of the injury, these spots typically do not require any treatment and should go away as your nail grows out. And they should not return unless you suffer another nail trauma.

However, this generally applies when only a single or a few nails are affected. If all of your nails are showing white spots or streaks, the leukonychia could be related to another more serious condition such as anemia, cardiac disease, cirrhosis, diabetes or kidney disease. Overall, it’s good practice to pay attention to changes and abnormalities in your fingernails and to consult your doctor if you’re concerned.

What are the white dots on my nails?

You finally finished repainting those end tables for the guest room. As you’re washing up, you notice something on your fingernail. You try to scrub it off and realize the little white dots are not paint; they’re actually part of your nail.

You show the spots to your roommate and he says it could mean you have a calcium deficiency. Or wait, is it zinc? It’s definitely some sort of nutritional deficit, of that he’s certain. But you start to wonder if he’s right because just last month, he told you that washing your face in egg whites will decrease the size of your pores.

However, when you mentioned that to your dermatologist, she said that nothing can actually shrink your pores. So what are these white spots and how’d you get them? One of the most common causes for these little white spots, which can show up on both fingernails and toenails, is a condition called leukonychia. Although the name sounds pretty serious, the condition typically isn’t. And while many people think they’re caused by a calcium or zinc deficiency, that’s generally not the case.In reality, these spots most often develop as a result of mild to moderate trauma to your nail.

If you can’t think of anything that would have injured your nail, consider the fact that nails grow very slowly, so the injury may have occurred weeks before the spots ever appeared. Another possibility is that the spots could be a sign of a mild infection or allergy, or a side effect of certain medications.

Could an Avocado a Day Keep the Doctor Away

This study reported that people who ate avocados had significantly higher intakes of fruits and vegetables in general, and lower intakes of added sugars.

After crunching the data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2001 to 2008, researchers found that eating avocados was associated with an overall better-quality diet; higher levels of HDL (the “good” cholesterol); a lower risk of metabolic syndrome; and a lower body weight, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference.

Yoga’s Impact on Your Mental HealthYour body and your health can, indeed must change as you start implementing good lifestyle changes. Yoga has received some well-deserved media attention recently. Most individuals already know that yoga produces some kind of a calming effect. Individually, people feel better after doing the physical exercise. Mentally, people feel calmer, sharper, maybe more content.

According to the latest findings, yoga appears to have a positive effect on:

• Mild depression• Sleep problems• Schizophrenia (among patients using medication)• ADHD (among patients using medication)Some of the studies suggest yoga can have a similar effect to antidepressants and psychotherapy, by influencing neurotransmitters and boosting serotonin. Yoga was also found to reduce levels of inflammation, oxidative stress, blood lipids and growth factors.

Stop Feeling SAD This Winter...Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), also known as winter blues or winter depression, affects people who have normal mental health most of the year but get depressed in the cold months or even during the fall.Almost 3 percent of South Africans are affected by SAD.

But most people don’t even know that they’re depressed and attribute their change in behavior to the weather.

You may be suffering from SAD if you often feel fatigued, crave foods rich in carbohydrates, lack enthusiasm in doing normal activities, have difficulty diffusing tension and dealing with stress, find it difficult to concentrate, feel socially withdrawn, and experience weight gain.

• Avoid grains and sugars – Grains and sugars increase your risk of insulin resistance, which is associated with depression.

• Exercise – Sweat it out to produce endorphins, which help promote a sense of well-being by reducing pain and stress.

• Laugh – Like exercise, laughter releases endorphins to give you painkilling effects similar to morphine.

• Meditate and pray.

• Optimize your levels of omega-3 fats – These essential fatty acids can help improve your emotional health.

• Skip the bottle – Avoid alcohol because drinking will only depress you more.

• Sleep early – Our bodies are designed to go to sleep when the sun sets. In the winter, however, you may want to hit the sack earlier to preserve this biological pattern and avoid disrupting delicate hormonal cycles in your body.

• Socialize – No man is an island. It’s bad enough to be depressed so go find good company that can help cheer you up.

• Try light therapy – There are small portable lamps called light boxes that produce artificial full-spectrum light

Top tips to fight flu. . .Don’t look now, but flu season is just around the corner. No one wants to be running a fever and to sniffle and bark at the same time.

Avoiding the flu, even during the middle of flu season, is not as difficult as many people think.

1. Get enough vitamin D – A recent large-scale study showed that people with low vitamin D levels were more prone to colds and bouts with the flu.

2. Take a probiotic supplement and eat plenty of probiotic-rich fermented foods – Protect your gastrointestinal system because eighty percent of your immune system, your body’s natural defense against disease, is located in your gut.

3. Eliminate or drastically reduce your sugar intake – Sugar is a natural enemy of your immune system.

4. Get enough sleep and rest – Listen to your body. Take a break when you need to because your body will easily succumb to the flu virus if you’re always fatigued.

5. Manage your stress levels – A stressful lifestyle rarely leads to a healthy body. You can’t separate wellness from emotions. How you deal with stress directly affects your state of health.

Forget the winter blues. Bentley has unleashed the ultimate wind-in-the-hair thrill - what it claims is the world’s fastest four-seater convertible with a top speed of 325 km/h

Apparently, the car is even monsoon- proof - though we assume only with the roof up. The powerful new Continental GT Speed cabriolet will go from rest to 100 km/h in four seconds and to 161 km/h in a shade more than nine seconds - all with the top down.

Priced at around R1 600 000, following its global unveiling at the Detroit Motor Show on January 14. Bentley describes it as its ‘performance flagship convertible’.

Mention dandelion and a shudder wriggles down most gardeners’ spines. Scourge of lawns, borders, patios and allotments, they’re a major reason why we spend a fortune on weed killer or

hours bent double, extracting their thong-like roots. Now, a species of Russian dandelion is set to become one of the most important plants on the planet, propping up civilisation with rubber made from the glutinous, milky sap found in its roots.

In July this year, Indian-Dutch company Apollo Vredestein rolled out the first prototype tyres produced from European-grown rubber. If tests go well, they hope to start full production in 2015. The dandelion, Taraxacum kok-saghyz (TKS), is one of three plants currently being investigated by various international

consortia, made up of government agencies, big business and scientific research establishments, locked in a multi-million pound scramble to find alternatives to natural rubber.

Increasing demandWorld supplies of natural rubber are falling short of demand, which is driven by the needs of developing nations such as China, India, Brazil and countries of the former Soviet Union. Around 80 per cent of the world’s natural rubber is produced from

plantations of the tropical tree, Hevea brasiliensis, primarily located in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and South America.

According to The Rubber Economist, these countries produce 10.9 million tons of rubber, worth £32.6 billion, every year. Synthetic rubber, mainly produced from fossil fuels, weighs in at almost 15 million tons and is worth £31.5 billion. With demand projected to outstrip supply by around 20 per cent in 2020, there are serious concerns for the future. Falling yields of natural rubber, the monopoly of producer countries, crop diseases, changing climate and dwindling oil reserves paint an unsettling picture.

1. You Have Spinal Discomfort

Many spinal injuries and reasons for discomfort come from the workplace. If you are experiencing back pain or suspect any type of spinal problems, you should certainly see a physiotherapist. They will be able to look at your spine, your posture, your lifestyle and evaluate any injuries that you may have had. Once that is known, they will be able to work with you to develop a treatment plan that will help you live a pain free life.

Ask The Physio Pro(Physiotherapy By Harper & Schiller)

Q:I often wake up in the morning with a stiff neck, what could be the cause? A:There are many reasons for morning neck pain and stiffness therefore a Physio assessment is advised to determine the cause. A common trigger of neck pain in the morning could be a poor sleeping position. Sleeping on your stomach with your neck rotated causes the joints on one side of the neck to be compressed and the ligaments and muscles to be stretched on the other side.

The ideal posture would be either on your back with pillows under your knees or on your side with a pillow between your knees. The correct size pillow for under your head is of importance as the spine needs to be in neutral alignment. If you are unsure it is advised to contact Harper & Schiller Physio.

As you can see, there are many great reasons to see a physiotherapist and at some point in all our lives, we will likely need the services of one.

If you are in need of a physiotherapist today, it is recommended to make an appointment for an assessment as soon as possible. The longer you wait before calling, the most complex the problem may become.

It was an unexpected challenge, yet when Neil Kalify was asked to return to Wanderers at the start of 2012, he made up his mind that (in the year of their 125th anniversary) they would bring back former glory.

Exercise is not only great for the body, it is great for the brain as well. According to John Ratey - MD, the author of Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and The Brain, exercise changes and charges the brain.

Exercise causes many positive changes in the brain when it comes to dealing with stress, depression and anxiety. In addition to the physical and emotional changes that exercise has, scientists are now discovering that exercise can even improve your ability to think better.

Neuroscientists are in the process of proving that exercise can actually increase the amount of neurons (brain cells) and their connections. It was long believed that the amount of neurons do not increase until recent research, using high power scanning machines, showed that with

exercise certain parts of the brain do produce new neurons. The increase in neurons and neuron connections seems to be caused by an increase in the amount of growth factors produced in the body (mainly brain-derived neurotrophic factor- BDNF.) Exercise increases BDNF.

Doctor John Ratey calls BDNF “miracle-growth for the brain.” Studies have found that mice that have a running wheel in their cage have twice as many neurons in certain parts of their brains than mice without a running wheel.

There have also been many studies that have tested exercisers and non-exercisers with different cognitive tests before

and after exercise. After a bout of exercise, the exercise group almost always increased their scores where the non-exercise group scores stayed the same. Everyone that exercises knows that you feel much better physically and emotionally after a good run. The part you may not have been aware of is the increased ability to think better.

The human body was created to move. The more you move the better your body and mind works. So the next time you have a paper to write or a problem to solve slip on your running shoes or go to the gym first to increase your brains ability to reach its highest potential.

Parent’s Place

54 |AUTUMN | NORTHSIDE MAGAZINE | www.thenorthside.co.za

By Brett Peers

We often forget that children aren’t born with a built-in sense of respect for others. While each child has a different personality, all children need to be taught to be respectful. From birth, kids learn to manipulate their world to get their needs met - this is natural.

But it’s our job as parents to teach them respectful ways of doing this. It’s important to remember that your child is not your friend - he’s your child. Your job is to teach him to be able to function in the world. This means teaching him to behave respectfully to others, not just you.

People wonder why kids have gotten so much more disrespectful these days—we see children and teens arguing with adults (or ignoring them outright), using foul language, copping an attitude, and not using manners or respecting those in authority. Sadly, this has become the norm for many children and teens. In my opinion, it really is a different world right now than the one we grew up in. Movies, music, video games and television all seem to glorify a disrespectful, angry, rude way of dealing with others. This means that in some ways we have to work harder as parents to teach our kids to be respectful. Added to this is the fact that parents are also busier than ever before, which makes it much harder to respond immediately to our kids. Let’s face it, it’s easier to let things slide when you’re worn out and stressed from working so hard.

Another phenomenon that has increased over time: Many parents have a hard time looking at their kids in a realistic light. In some ways, our own parents were less defensive and more open to the fact that their kids were not “perfect.” I can’t overstate how important it is to be willing to look at your children realistically, noting both their strengths and their areas of weakness. This allows you to see inappropriate behaviour as it happens and address it—and not make excuses or ignore it.

Here are 9 things you can do as a parent today to start getting respect back from your kids.

1. Remember, your child is not your friend.

It’s not about your child liking you or even thanking you for what you do. It’s important to remember that your child is not your friend—he’s your child. Your job is to coach him to be able to function in the world. This means teaching him to behave respectfully to others, not just you. When you think your child might be crossing the line, a good rule of thumb is to ask yourself, “Would I let the neighbour say these things to me? Would I let a stranger?” If the answer is no, don’t let your child do it, either. Some day when your child becomes an adult, your relationship may become more of a friendship, but for now, it’s your job to be his parent: his teacher, coach and limit setter—not the buddy who lets him get away with things.

2. Catch disrespect early and plan aheadif you can.

It’s good to catch disrespectful behaviour early if possible. If your child is rude or disrespectful, don’t turn a blind eye. Intervene and say, “We don’t talk to each other that way in this fam- ily.” Giving consequences when your kids are younger is going to pay off in the long run. It’s really important as a parent if you see your child being disrespectful to admit it and then try to nip it in the bud.

Also, if your child is about to enter the teen years (or another potentially diffi- cult phase) think about the future. Some parents I know are already planning how they will ad- dress behaviour as their ADD daughter (who is now 11) becomes a teenager. They’re learning skills to prepare for their interactions with her at a later time. This can only help them as they move forward together as a family.

3. Get in alignment with your partner.

It’s so important for you and your partner to be on the same page when it comes to your child’s behaviour. Make sure one of you isn’t allowing the disrespectful behaviour while the other is trying to intercede. Sit

down together and talk about what your bottom lines are, and then come up with a plan of action—and a list of consequences you might give—if your child breaks the rules.

4. Teach your child basic social interaction skills.

5. Be respectful when you correct your child. When your child is being disrespectful, you as a parent need to correct them in a respectful manner. Yelling and getting upset and having your own attitude in response to theirs is not helpful and often only escalates behaviour. The truth is, if you allow their disrespectful behaviour to affect you, it’s difficult to be an effective teacher in that moment. You can pull your child aside and give them a clear message, for example. You don’t need to shout at them or embarrass them. One of our friends was excellent at this particular parenting skill. He would pull his kids aside, say something quietly (I usually had no idea what it was), and it usually changed their behaviour immediately. Use these incidents as teachable moments by pulling your kids aside calmly, making your expectations firm and clear, and following through with consequences if necessary.

6. Try to set realistic expectations for your kids around their behaviour.

This may actually mean that you need to lower your expectations. Don’t plan a huge road trip with your kids, for example, if they don’t like to ride in the car. If your child has trouble in large groups and you plan an event for 30 people, you’re likely to set everyone up for disappointment and probably an argument! If you are setting realistic expectations and you still think there might be some acting-out behaviours that crop up, set limits beforehand. For example, if you’re going to go out to dinner, be clear with your kids about what you expect of them. This will not only help the behaviour,

but in some ways will help them feel safer. They will understand what is expected of them and will know what the consequences will be if they don’t meet those expectations. If they meet your goals, certainly give them credit, but also if they don’t, follow through on whatever consequences you’ve set up for them.

7. Clarify the limits when things are calm.

When you’re in a situation where your child is disrespectful, that’s not the ideal time to do a lot of talking about limits or consequences. At a later time you can talk with your child about his behaviour and what your expectations are.

8. Talk about what happened afterward.

If your child is disrespectful or rude, talk about what happened (later, when things are calm) and how it could have been dealt with differently. That’s a chance for you, as a parent, to listen to your child and hear what was going on

with her when that behaviour happened. Try to stay objective. You can say, “Pretend a video camera recorded the whole thing. What would I see?” This is also a perfect time to have your child describe what she could have done differently.

9. Don’t take it personally.

One of the biggest mistakes parents can make is to take their child’s behaviour personally. The truth is, you should never fall into that trap because the teenager next door is doing the same thing to his parents, and your cousin’s daughter is doing the same thing to her parents. Your role is to just deal with your child’s behaviour as objectively as possible. When parents don’t have effective ways to deal with these kinds of things, they may feel out of control and get scared - and often overreact or under react to the situation. When they overreact, they become too rigid, and when they under react, they ignore the behaviour or tell themselves it’s “just a phase.” Either way, it won’t help your child learn to manage his thoughts or emotions more effectively, and be more respectful.

Understand that if you haven’t been able to intervene early with your kids, you can start at any time. Even if your child is constantly exhibiting disrespectful behaviour, you can begin stepping in and setting those clear limits. And kids really do want limits, even if they protest loudly—and they will.

The message that they get when you step in and set limits is that they’re cared about, they’re loved and that you really want them to be successful and able to function well in the world. Our kids won’t thank us now, but that’s okay—it’s not about getting them to thank us, it’s about doing the right thing.

Your courtyard needn’t be an eyesore, or just the place where your washing line is. Why not transform your courtyard into your own private oasis. Courtyard walls create a private sanctuary, reflect the warmth of the sun and will perfectly capture the heady scent of summer flowers. Follow our guide to creating your own ultimate urban luxury right outside your back door.

A sensory feature

The sound of running water is very relaxing, and you don't need loads of space for a moving water feature such as a bubble fountain. Focus the whole design on a water feature. Water also creates much-needed humidity; courtyards get hot and containerised plants soon dry out, so consider installing an irrigation system if you don't enjoy regular watering. The plants will repay you with summer flowers and clouds of scent.

Pretty walls

Concentrate on techniques that will focus the eye on the lower part of the walls – for example, by attaching a one and a half metre run of trellis along the bottom and growing plants up it to that height, or by painting the bottom half of the wall in a different colour.

Gravel design

Is an inexpensive option, but does need holding in place within a framework of brick, stone or wooden edging. Fine grey chippings can look wonderful with neutral walls and green trees.

Bird feeders

Birds visit feeders while being protected from cold winds, and will get used much more than an out of the way isolated and unprotected place.

Seated area

A comfortable bench or rustic chair is important as a

Transform Your Courtyard

destination in your courtyard – place one amongst potted patio roses and other pretty pot plants for a much needed pick me up.

Fresh and Fabulous

Herbs and veggies grow extremely well in containers – making your courtyard the perfect spot for this, as they are sheltered and generally have the right amount of sunlight. An easy, healthy alternative to store-bought items.

Hanging baskets

Are great for giving the illusion of bringing down the height of very tall spaces and make a great visual impact, filled with colourful flowers.

Use these courtyard design ideas to give your home an additional beautiful outdoor spot to enjoy.

Earth Hour 2013 is at 8:30 PM- 9:30 PM

On Saturday, March 23.Go beyond dining in the dark this earth hour. Candle lit dinners have always been a popular way to celebrate Earth Hour, but now hotels, restaurants and chefs all over the world are taking dining in the dark a step further by coming up with green menus and sustainable meals.

Earth Day -- April 22

The fight for a clean environment continues in a climate of increasing urgency, as the ravages of climate change become more manifest every day. Be a part of Earth Day and help write many more victories and successes into our history. Discover energy you didn’t even know you had. Feel it rumble through the grassroots under your feet and the technology at your fingertips.

Channel it into building a clean, healthy, diverse world for generations to come. The April 22 Earth Day is usually celebrated with outdoor performances, where individuals or groups perform acts of service to earth. Typical ways of observing Earth Day include planting trees, picking up roadside trash, conducting various programs for recycling and conservation, using recyclable containers for snacks and lunches.

Some people are encouraged to sign petitions to governments, calling for stronger or immediate action to stop global warming and to reverse environmental destruction. Television stations frequently air programmes dealing with environmental issues.

Botswana To Plant One Million Trees To Restore Forests

Former President of Botswana, Mr Festus Mogae has promised to plant one million indigenous trees over four years, as part of his I will if you will challenge, for Earth 2013.

He will kick off his incredible: I will if you will challenge by planting 100,000 trees in a severely degraded area in the Southern part of the country called Goodhope.

The remaining trees will be planted in other parts of the country which are also in need of land rehabilitation, such as in the North Eastern and Western part of Botswana.

Mr Mogae’s One Million Trees – Plant for Life campaign urges his fellow Botswana to be good stewards of the environment by protecting the country’s biodiversity against degradation and deforestation.

His campaign has already inspired private companies and government institutions, which support his efforts to raise awareness on climate change. This is one of Earth Hour’s most epic IWIYW challenges yet.

Green fact #1An estimated 15% to 30% of a home’s total heating and cooling energy is lost through poorly sealed duct-work, costing consumers about R5 billion rand annually.

Green fact #2Did you know that recycling one ton of paper saves 20 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, three cubic yards of landfill space, 60 pounds of air pollutants, and saves enough energy to power the average home for six months?

Green fact #3According to the American Solar Energy Society, the amount of sunlight that falls on the Earth’s surface in one minute is sufficient to meet world energy demand for an entire year.

Expenditure On Low-Income Housing And Public Transport Networks Positive News, Says Dr Andrew GoldingAn ongoing emphasis announced in South Africa’s National Budget (27 February 2013) in regard to investment in infrastructural development – including transportation networks, as well as education, job creation and housing development is to be welcomed, says Dr Andrew Golding, CE of the Pam Golding Property group.

“It is positive news that there is increased provision for low-income housing, with allocations made for the upgrading of informal housing in metropolitan municipalities and mining towns, as well as medium-density rental housing in urban areas. It is also positive to note recognition of the fact that in today’s rapidly urbanising society, there is a growing need for housing,

municipal services, schools, clinics, public transport and commercial development.

Also encouraging is an increase in state spending on urban public transport. As has been evident, in addition to providing a vital service for commuters, the implementation and roll-out of the Gautrain network has proven an important driver of commercial development as well as impacting positively on the demand for housing in these nodes,” says Dr Golding.

Dr Golding says the announcement that tax relief is proposed to assist businesses which provide their employees with housing assistance or home loans is good news, as today’s aspirant home

buyers are faced with stringent criteria in applying for mortgages, coupled with the need to be able to provide a deposit and cover all relevant costs associated with the acquisition of a home.“While the personal tax relief of R7 billion is some assistance to cash-strapped consumers, who are faced with dramatically

increasing electricity tariffs and other rising costs such as fuel and food, of concern is the further increase in the national fuel levy by 30.5 cents per litre, which represents a significant increase in the face of recent fuel price hikes – which in turn will exacerbate rising inflation.

“Having said that, against a backdrop of ongoing global economic uncertainties, South Africa’s economic policy has consistently achieved a stable economy, despite the numerous challenges faced, and the Minister of Finance is to be commended on this.“From a Pam Golding Properties perspective, in addition to the above, we welcome recognition in the Budget Speech of the opportunities presented for investment in Africa and other emerging markets, as we continue to expand our operations beyond South Africa’s borders. In addition to our existing offices in Africa in Zambia, Botswana, Kenya, Swaziland and Zimbabwe,

we now have two offices in Namibia with a third in the pipeline in Walvisbay, and are continuing to look further afield to find real estate partners in East and West Africa, including possibilities in Tanzania and Angola, as we remain bullish and optimistic about the Africa region.

“For the year to date (2012), Pam Golding Properties has experienced an increase in enquiries and activity in South Africa’s residential marketplace. While access to credit remains a key hurdle to property purchase, there is an increasing appetite among a younger generation of home buyers to save and acquire their own homes. This is coupled with a broad range of value-for-money options available in regions and areas around the country. Signs of increased movement in the marketplace are demonstrated by the fact that some areas, which have proven
