after Pentecost
October 11, 2020
Thank you for covenanting to wear your face masks/coverings throughout the
service. The hymns and the sung responses will be sung by the choir only; we
discourage congregational singing at this time. The congregation is invited to recite
the spoken responses, the prayers, the Apostles’ Creed, and the Mission Statement.
Prelude
Words of Welcome Rev. Jim Humphries
Opening Hymn
Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing nettleton
Come, thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace;
streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it, mount of thy redeeming love.
Here I raise mine Ebenezer; hither by thy help I'm come;
and I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God;
he, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood.
O to grace how great a debtor daily I'm constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love;
here's my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.
words: Robert Robinson, 1758
music: Wyeth’s Repository of Sacred Music, Part Second, 1813
Prayer of Confession
Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
Through your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your name. Amen.

Song of Forgiveness
O Lord, Have Mercy Allen Pote
O Lord have mercy on us, have mercy, O Lord have mercy on us, we pray.
O Lord, forgive us, forgive us all our sins, as we walk in the light of your love.
Words of Assurance
Pastor: Hear the good news: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners; that proves
God’s love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
People: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
All: Glory to God. Amen.
Gospel Reading Matthew 6:1-21; Cat Rutledge, lector
Jesus said “Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then
you have no reward from your Father in heaven. So, whenever you give alms, do not sound a
trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may
be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you give
alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be
done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
“And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the
synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they
have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room, and shut the door and
pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that
they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows
what you need before you ask him.
“Pray then in this way
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one.
For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you;
but if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
“And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces
so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.
But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that your fasting may be seen
not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will
reward you. Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume
and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where
neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your
treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Lector: This is the Gospel of our Lord.
People: Praise to you, O Christ!
Sermon Rev. Shane Page
Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord:
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried;
the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Gloria Patri meineke
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.
Pastoral Prayer
The pastor will end each petition with: Lord, in your mercy,
to which the congregation responds: Hear our prayer.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Take This Moment John L. Bell
Take this moment, sign and space, take my friends around; here among us make the place where your love is found.
Take the time to call my name, take the time to mend who I am and what I’ve been, all I’ve failed to tend.
Take the tiredness of my days, take my past regret, letting your forgiveness touch all I can’t forget.
Take the little child in me, scared of growing old. Help me here to find my worth, made in Christ’s own mold.
Take my talents, take my skill, take what’s yet to be. Let my life be yours, and yet, let it still be me.
Doxology Gladly We Praise Thee
Gladly we praise you and bless you, Creator, O God of life.
Christ, we adore you and thank you, compassion of God, our light.
Great Holy Spirit, by you we are born from above!
Alleluia! Praise the God of blessing! Alleluia! Bless the God of love!
Closing Hymn
Take My Life, and Let It Be messiah
Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee.
Take my moments and my days; let them flow in ceaseless praise.
Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of thy love.
Take my feet, and let them be swift and beautiful for thee.
Take my voice, and let me sing always, only, for my King.
Take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from thee.
Take my silver and my gold; not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect, and use every power as thou shalt choose.
Take my will, and make it thine; it shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart, it is thine own; it shall be thy royal throne.
Take my love, my Lord, I pour at thy feet its treasure-store.
Take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for thee. words: Frances R. Havergal, 1873
music: Louis J. F. Hérold, 1839; arr. by George Kingsley, 1839
