PASO ROBLES TRIP - February 15 – 17

About 35 Niles Rotarians and guests attended the annual Paso Robles trip from February 15-17. Events included Friday dinner at Lussa Della Terra Winery, catered by Chef Jacob Lovejoy (formerly of Cass Winery) with special guest MC from the Paso Robles Morning Rotary Club. Saturday’s events included a tour and then lunch at Tooth and Nail Winery, with dinner at Opolo Winery with Stephen Lloyd’s Montenegro “family” and Montenegro inspired food. Sunday featured our annual elegant dinner at Cass Winery, complete with a tour of their soon to be completed special event center; our group for dinner included owners Steve Cass and his wife, and Crazy Ted. Each evening, after dinner, those up for even more Niles Rotary fellowship gathered in the La Quinta lobby. An excellent weekend, and a big Thank You to Chuck Canada for organizing it!!

“Flash Campaign”

Inspired Rotarians of District 5170 are needed now! We will be conducting a “Flash Campaign” (60 days), which will start on March 1 and run until April 30. Each Rotarian in our district is being asked to contribute $50.00 to The Rotary Foundation in support of the End Polio Now campaign. Your $50.00 contribution will be matched 2 to 1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation thus bringing your contribution to $150.00. During the “Flash Campaign” we will also be conducting an ongoing auction for a beautifully framed End Polio Now shirt signed by current RI President Barry Rassin and six past international presidents.

Your HELP is needed today...The Children of the World are counting on you!

For more information, check the District 5170 TRF News Today that arrived via email with our

District Newsletter on February 20 from Olivia Poe.

NILES ROTARY REVERSE RAFFLE – MARCH 23

Tickets are now on sale for the 24th annual Niles Rotary Elimination Raffle Fund Raiser on Saturday March 23 at the DoubleTree Hilton Hotel. This year’s event theme is “Let the Good Times Roll!” Each ticket is $200 and includes dinner for two and a fun evening with friends, plus silent and live auctions, and a basket raffle. Plus a 1 in 10 chance to win a cash prize, and a 1 in 335 chance to win $5,000. This is the only fund raiser for Niles Rotary and it funds our community giving to non profit organizations for the year. Every club member is on a ticket sales team, and each club member needs to sell or buy at least one ticket. Your team captain will be checking in with team members to see how the sales are going. Ticket and event information are on the club website, along with a ticket order form. And ticket forms are available at every club meeting.

NILES ROTARY WEBSITE – www.nilesrotary.org

Check out the newly edited club website! Lots of good and useful information can be found by browsing through the sections of the website.

Have you ever awakened in the middle of the night wondering about a particular word in the Rotary vocabulary that eludes you? Rather than text your best Niles Rotary friend at 3 am to find out, you can just go to the club website and find a very long Rotary Vocabulary List where you will find the information you are looking for. It’s in the Members section.

There are also special sections on the website for Local and International service projects. In the News section is a wonderful article by PDG Russ Hobbs on the Richard D. King Tribute Dinner. Past issues of the Pinion and the club President’s articles are in the News/Pinion section, as well as a section of club program highlights (e.g. Jung Ho Pak). In Member Services is a list of committees. There is a Remembrance section with articles on several past presidents and club members who have recently passed away. The Membership Criteria section has the list of Blue Badge Requirements, and a Frequently Asked Questions page has background information of interest for interested and prospective members such as club projects, membership costs, what the “fines” are all about.

The “About” section has some interesting club history, such as the downloadable books of The First 25 Years: 1937-1962 and The Second 25 Years: 1962-1987 plus the contents of those books. For The Third 25 Years: 1987-2012, there is a paragraph for each president of their year. And finally, a list of all the club presidents from 1937 to date. When was Rich Brunelli club president? When was Dana’s Uncle Chet president? In what year was the first woman president of Niles Rotary?

Thank you to Paul Andrus who had set up some of the history information, and to Padma Magadala who has added and edited information to keep current.

All this and more! So, for a fun time, go explore the club website!!

And, if you would like to be a website sponsor, please contact Audrey Kearns.

REMEMBERING JEWEL McCRARY

1936 - 2019

Our dear friend and long time Niles Rotarian Jewel McCrary passed away on February 11, 2019. Jewel’s classification was Training Consultant; he was the local Dale Carnegie trainer, and many Niles Rotarians had taken advantage of his Dale Carnegie training. Jewel was our Program Chairman for many years, and spent a lot of time at the podium introducing speakers; his Dale Carnegie connections brought us excellent speakers over the years. Jewel is remembered for being one of the first chairs of the club’s live auction, before the Reverse Raffle was begun. His memorial and celebration of life service brought back many memories: he loved jokes, and had been a winner in the Gene Cowell Bad Joke Contest. Some of the words that described Jewel were: optimism, spiritual, funny – and any of you who knew Jewel would certainly add to those thoughts and words. And, evidently, he loved bananas because at his service was a basket of bananas for us to take, with each banana having a “Jewalism.”

ROTARY PEACE CENTERS The following message is from President Brian in a ClubRunner email he sent on February 8, which bears re-reading, in case you know of any interested/eligible applicants: Here is more information regarding the Fellowship/Scholarship, process and application, talked about at the meeting yesterday. Rotary Peace Centers The 2020 Rotary Peace Fellowship application is now available and we need your help to find the next cohort of experienced global peace and development leaders! • Join the “All about the Rotary Peace Fellowship” course to learn everything you need to know about the fellowship.

• Send personalized emails with the fellowship announcement to contacts within your network.

• Do you know someone who could benefit from our program? Submit their name and email in our referral form and we’ll follow up with them.

Candidates have until 31 May to submit applications to their district. Districts must submit endorsed applications to The Rotary Foundation by 1 July. General inquiries regarding the fellowship program may be sent to [email protected]. We thank you for your dedication to the Rotary Peace Centers and your continuous support in educating the Rotary network about the fellowships!

THE FOUR-WAY TEST Of the things we think, say, or do
