The NightWatchman Page 1 The Hawthorn Cricket Club Newsletter Vol 14 - 2012/13 hawthorn.vic.cricket .com.au The NightWatchman January ’13 1 X It's Knuckle down time for the First XI With only 3 rounds left in the Dunstan Shield before the finals take place we have reached the business end of the season. The 1st XI are holding up fourth position on percentage meaning we still have control of our final ladder position. Our work at the bowling crease and in the field over the last few rounds has put us in some very strong positions. Some special mentions need to go to Dale Wilkinson and Andrew Cossar who have been in glittering form with the ball, all our bowlers have done a fantastic job so far this season but 'Prancer' and 'Coss' have been in ridiculous form. Last week Dale was also responsible for taking the most outrageous catch I think I can remember... However our batting has been inconsistent of late and if we can find some form in this area we will be very tough to beat. Last week's game against Mulgrave was dissappointing for a number of reasons. Least of all because we had control of the game and were dictating the terms only to give the opposition a series of half chances that they happily accepted. The 1 run loss was perhaps a harsh result given how we played for most of the match but it teaches us a vital lesson about taking your chances when they come around. As we start the run home it's really important that we recognise the opportunity we have this year and make the most of it. Playing in the finals was an important goal we set ourselves at the start of the season but to get there from here we need to take each game, each week and each session one at a time. We need to focus hard to win the small battles and take our chances as they present themselves. If we can knuckle down and do not give an inch for the next 3 games we will be playing cricket well into March and with some momentum and a bit of belief anything can happen. Our season starts now. n Garth. The G Spot with Skipper Garth Ancher 23/01/13 The memory still lingers of that disappointing, cool afternoon this time last year against North Balwyn. It was theT20 Quarter Final. Chasing 140 the Hawks fell short of victory by 9 runs. This time around our boys take on Bulleen at Koonung Park and aim to go that one step further, after winning three of their four pool matches in the opening stage. Confidence is high after many strong performances in the lead up. The talent is there with the ball. East Doncaster (71) and East MalvernTooronga (103) can attest to that. The team has shown this season it knows how to perform in the short form, cauldron ofT20 cricket. They are ready to deliver the goods against Bulleen, who cannot be under- estimated. A win will secure the Hawks a semi- final berth on Sunday 10th February and $500 in prize money, both exciting prospects. Who knows, if things go right, they could go all the way and scoop $1,500 on the 24th February. If they get there it really will be a Super Sunday to remember! Ace all-rounder Rob Tongue v. Richmond City Club support has been terrific across the tournament on these pastTuesday nights, and the boys all lift as a result of it.To all the club, get down to Koonung Park, Bulleen thisTuesday 29th January if you can to cheer the Hawks on to victory. Game starts at 5.30pm and should finish by 8.15pm. n Haydos. Scores of 2/140 v. Mont Albert and 3/206 v. East Malvern (a Club record) show that on our day,Toby Mullen, Garth Ancher, Rob Baker, Nick Curtin and recent centurian, Alex Strauch can really hurt sides with big scores. The Hawks have plenty of aces up the sleeve; Eel Moore, Dale Wilkinson, RobTongue and Andy Cossar have all turned it on big time this season. Our two other key bowlers, Matty Laing and Dave Middleton also have plenty of guile, experience and strength to offer. Brendan MooreTeam mate Micky Yole caught up with our new batting sensationFullName Brendan John MooreNickname EelDOB 25101985Occupation LandscaperHighestScore 193

Where did your cricketing journey begin Under the watchful eye of Matt Laing at Parkwood CC 9596

Talk us through your preparation before that fateful Sunday at St James where you struck 168 - Had a lazy afternoon watching Tonguey crack an 80 then spent the rest of the night hydrating at our Geek Party

How did the monicker Eel come aboutMoorey became Moray Eel which became Eel

How is Pig (Jarrod Campbell) to live with - Theres not much in the fridge put it that way

Is everyone from Warranwood CC named after an animal - Apart from Eel Pig Dog Swanny and Wombat no

Would you agree youre batting above your average on and off the field this year Brendan - Its been that way for a couple of seasons youve just got to train and train and train and train

Is it true that your brother is a better cricketer than you - Bowler maybe

Are you going to leave HCC at the end of the season due to non-selection in the Firsts - Just trying to get up the order in the 2s at the moment

Lastly what has been the highlight of your brief career at HCC - Itd have to be the time Ive spent piling on the runs with Michael Yole out in the middle

Great way to close the innings Brendan Best of luck for the rest of the season and may the rise of the Eel continue

nMichael Yole
