THE OPTIONS
Full- or Part-Time
The MS in Security and Resilience Studies is offered as a full-time hybrid program
to be completed in one calendar year, or as a flexible hybrid part-time program—
for working professionals—to be completed in two to three years. Both options
include a summer capstone project that can be completed in Boston or at an offsite
project location.
Low Residency
Northeastern offers a low-residency alternative for this program, too. Students
spend four weekends in Boston during each of the fall and spring semesters, and
participate in experiential core classes with the rest of their cohort. All electives can
be completed online—ideal for students who live outside of Boston.
Graduate Certificate
The graduate certificate in security and resilience studies teaches students the
principles, policies, and strategies required to manage transnational risks and
protect communities and critical systems. The certificate is offered as a hybrid
option in Boston and Seattle (available beginning fall 2016).
An Innovative University
Whatever option you choose, our MS in Security and Resilience Studies delivers
rigorous academics, cutting-edge research opportunities, and the chance to gain

THE PROGRAM
MS IN SECURITY AND RESILIENCE STUDIES
Northeastern University’s Masters in Security and Resilience Studies is the
first graduate program of its kind designed to help public and private sector
professionals manage many of the challenges unique to today’s world. Terrorism,
cyber attacks, natural disasters, and more threaten our communities, companies,
and countries like never before. Meeting these challenges requires building
resilience into the critical systems, networks, and infrastructure we depend on.
This program integrates security studies with cutting-edge education to ensure
that key systems promote societal resilience. Students can deepen their knowledge
in fields such as cyberspace policy, counterterrorism, infrastructure protection,
urban resilience, and risk management. The combination of a unique academic
curriculum and experiential education—all taught by top academics and experts
in the security industry—provides students with a multidisciplinary approach to
addressing these important issues.
THE EXPERIENCE
The Network
The Northeastern University network spans the globe. With the support of over 3,000 employer partners
and more than 230,000 alumni, MS in Security and Resilience Studies students from around the world
have access to all of our campus resources, including our research library, career services, and various
conferences and presentations.
The Faculty
All faculty are tenure or tenure-track appointees in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities’ School
of Public Policy and Urban Affairs; Department of Political Science; and/or International Affairs Program.
Stephen Flynn, founder and co-director, leads the Center for Resilience Studies and co-directs the Kostas
Research Institute for Homeland Security. Daniel Aldrich, co-director, is an expert in post-disaster recovery,
countering violent terrorism, and the interaction between civil society and the state. Max Abrahms, assistant
professor, is a highly regarded media commentator on the issues of terrorism, counterterrorism, and
international security. Mai’a Davis Cross, assistant professor, examines European security policy to include
how NATO and the European Union manage traditional and transnational threats. Denise Garcia, associate
professor, is a leading academic expert on small arms proliferation and global governance of security.
The Capstone Project
After completing coursework, students engage in a six-credit capstone project, applying the skills,
knowledge, and perspectives they have learned to real-world emergencies. During this opportunity,
students are supported and guided by program faculty members, often in conjunction with the Kostas
Research Institute for Homeland Security or the Center for Resilience Studies.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Northeastern’s unique combination of academic curriculum and hands-on
experiential learning teaches students how to solve the problems of societal
risks and security threats in multidisciplinary ways. Students are challenged to
devise creative strategies involving prevention, mitigation, response, recovery,
and adaptation.
Instruction is provided by leading research scholars, with guest lectures by
industry leaders, government officials, and public sector practitioners in the
fields of security and resilience. Students are prepared for successful careers
including security and risk management, policy, and leadership roles in
resilience and security in the public, private, and non-profit sectors.
“ Northeastern has such prestige. But of course it’s more than that; it’s the caliber of the programs and the fact that when you have a Northeastern degree on your resumé, you’ll get a job.”
—Valerie Boulet, MA in Security and Resilience Studies, ’15
