3 BLUES NEWS October 2009
The Kentuckiana Blues Society's 21st birthday party will take place on Saturday, November 14 at the Vernon Club on Story Ave. Thanks in part to the large turnout for last year’s party, we decided to return to the Vernon Club this year. Headlining this year’s celebration is Grammy-nominated artist Jimmy Hall. Also on the bill from Nashville, TN is Josh Garrett and the Bottomline Band. Opening the evening is the 2009 KBS solo/duo contest winner Jon Boy Slim. Doors will open at 6:00 pm with Jon Boy Slim starting at 6:30 pm. We want to thank our sponsors for this year’s festival, including Meat Men BBQ, the Gal-axie Agency, WFPK and Voluforms. Food will be available from FireFresh BBQ.
The KBS will hold its first youth blues competition on Sunday, November 8 at the Bardstown Road Presbyterian Church. The competition will start at 2:00 pm. We will be accepting applications for the contest until Monday, October 26. This will be a contest for solo, duo and band blues acts. The only stipulation is that all participating musicians must be under the age of 21 years old at the time of the In-
ternational Blues Challenge next January 23 in Memphis, TN. Application forms and more information are available on-line at http://kbsblues.org/ or by calling 502/724-9971.
On Sunday, October 11, a benefit show in memory of local guitarist Ricky Mason will take place at Stevie Ray's Blues Bar. Ricky passed away this year on January 1 at the age of 54. The show is entitled “The Search is Over” after one of Ricky's favorite Eddie Hinton songs. The line-up will include The Saints, Hellfish, the Stray Cat Blues Band, the Stella-Vees and Lamont Gillispie & 100 Proof Blues. Doors open at 5:00 pm and admission is $5.00. The proceeds will be used to purchase a guitar for a deserving musician. Lamont Gillispie and Jimmy Brown of Guitar Emporium are organizing this show in memory of their good friend and former band mate.
MERF's annual fall benefit will take place on Sunday, November 15 at Jim Porter's. “Viva la Diva” will celebrate the many woman performers in and from the Louisville area. The line-up is still coming together but so far includes Tanita Gaines, Sheryl Rouse, Most Wanted, the Blues Umbrellas, Daphne Luster, the Confessional, Leigh Ann Yost, Brigid Kaelin and many more. We'll have more details in the November issue of Blues News.
Local blues favorites The KingBees are having a CD release party at Stevie Ray's on Friday and Saturday, October 23 and 24. “Love Hasn't Killed Me Yet” has fourteen original tunes by the band and will be available for purchase. You can keep up with the band on-line at http://kingbeesband.com/.
The KBS board and officers would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Patricia Gilbert who is stepping down as a board mem-ber for the blues society. Pat has worked many years helping the blues society get to where it is today and her presence will be missed. Thanks, Pat, for your hard work and dedication.

4 BLUES NEWS October 2009
2009 Chicago Blues Festival by Keith S. Clements
The Maxwell Street Market is long gone but it was temporarily revived on Columbus Drive by inviting some of the regulars who used to busk on the streets, including Piano C. Red. The old Down Home Music bus made a nostalgic backdrop.
Many lesser known musicians were part of the Maxwell St. gathering, including Mike ‘Iceman’ Robinson, Dancin’ Per-kins (formerly known as Mr. Pitiful), Bobby Too Tough and Smilin’ Bobby who is shown here. Wolf Records is planning Bobby’s first CD release soon.
Veteran West Side singer Mary Lane was backed by a band of super all stars that included Rockin’ Johnny Burgin and the two musicians shown here, Matthew Skoller and Lurrie Bell, going at it.
Big Bill Morganfield and Mud Morganfield would qualify as authentic blues brothers for their father was Muddy Waters. Big Bill’s guitar and Mud’s vocals brought back their dad’s spirit with the help of old bandmates Willie ‘Big Eyes’ Smith and Pinetop Perkins.
Eddie Campbell celebrated his 70th birth-day at the festival, headlining the first night in the Petrillo Music Shell. Eddie’s funky guitar licks and introspective lyrics set him apart from his contemporary West Side Chicago guitarists.
The original Blues Curmudgeon is Bob Koester, who started Delmark Records and the Jazz Record Mart. Delmark celebrated 55 years in the business last year. We are discussing when Bob reissued Louis-ville’s own Cliff Butler and Preacher Stephens United recordings on his Pearl label.
I first saw Ray ‘Killer’ Allison pounding the drums and everything else in sight with Buddy Guy during the 80s. Ray is now tearing it up on the guitar with the same high energy Lil’ Dave Thompson is a forty year old
Mississippi bluesman who started with the deep Delta sounds and has matured into a dazzling guitarist who never plays the same lick twice. Dave will be the headliner for the Garvin Gate Blues Festival on Friday, October 9.
It is almost impossible to take a bad photo of Lil’ Ed. His expressive face and colorful attire complete with his trademark fez make him one of the most dynamic bluesmen performing today. Ed and the Blues Imperials won Band of the Year for the 2009 Blues Music Awards.
5 BLUES NEWS October 2009
“How do you condense three days of intense blues at the 26th Chicago Blues Festival into two pages? They say pictures are worth a thousand words, so here are just the highlights of what occurred in Grant Park from June 12 to 14.”
I was not prepared for the dramatic power of a Bettye LaVette performance. This mesmerizing soulful singer is at the peak of her powers. She portrayed each song with such intensity that she left the crowd emotionally drained at the end of her set.
The Blues Heaven Foundation (formerly the Chess Records studio) had an open house Saturday night. Mississippi harp-man Grady Champion was the house band. When Steve Bell and Billy Branch showed up, it became a harmonica jam made in heaven. It is refreshing to hear someone for the
first time like Lou Pride. Lou’s expres-sive face and soulful delivery of original songs quickly established a rapport with the audience. His Bobby Blan-desque voice, without the mannerisms, was beautifully supported by The Blues Disciples.
On Sunday morning I went to church with the Lee Boys per-forming on the Front Porch Stage. The resonating sounds of Alvin Lee’s guitar and Roosevelt Collier’s pedal steel guitar cast a spiritual spell over the congregation of sacred steel believers. The Lee Boys will be spreading their sensual gospel message at St. Francis of Assisi Church on October 16.
Every year the epitome of blues leg-ends, David ‘Honeyboy’ Edwards, performs. I always take several pic-tures of him, never knowing that this may be his last time at the festival. At 94 Honeyboy continues to amaze with his primitive delta blues under the watchful eye of Michael Frank, the owner of Earwig Records.
Big Jack Johnson is an axeman from Clarksdale, Mississippi who plays the deep down blues. Since the days of playing with the Jelly Roll Kings, Jack continues to play as if he is in a juke joint.
Saxman Gene ‘Daddy G’ Barge is an integral part of the Chicago Rhythm and Blues Kings, that backed up Trudy Lynn. His jabbing horn has soloed on many hits, including Chuck Willis’s “C.C. Rider,” Gary U.S. Bonds’ “Quarter To Three,” Little Milton’s “We’re Gonna Make It” and Ko Ko Taylor’s “Wang Dang Doodle.”
One of the most beautiful faces in the blues belongs to Pinetop Perkins. At 96 years old, he was decked out in a dap-per bright green suit and hat plus a tie and socks with keyboard designs. His voice may be a little weak but his finger dexterity remains strong.
Charlie Musselwhite may be laid back but when he blows his harp it gets gritty and groovy. Charlie spent sev-eral years between Memphis and California in the Windy City during the mid and late 60s as a part of the “white blues movement.”
6 BLUES NEWS October 2009
Twisted Rick Estrin and the Nightcats Alligator Records
This release by the Nightcats is the first without Charlie Baty, the “Little Charlie” of the former “Little Charlie and the Nightcats”. The new leader, Rick Estrin, who teamed with Baty to form the original Nightcats in the San Francisco area is known for his vocals, harmonica and humorous lyr-ics. Replacing Baty is Chris “Kid” Anderson who festival goers may remember as the fiery guitarist who appeared with Charlie Musselwhite at the Madison Ribberfest two years ago. Other members
of the band include Lorenzo Ferrell on bass and J Hansen on drums, background vocals (lead vocal on “I’m Takin’ Out My In-Laws”).
The 14 songs on the CD are all originals. Nightcats fans will not notice any change in the style of music played without Baty. It is still harmonica filled fun tunes with Estrin’s unmistakable voice.
It will be interesting seeing them live to see if “Kid” lives up to Baty’s high standards. He will have to try and not make the guitar the center of the music, and on this CD, he does not, even though he gets to try his chops on a few songs.
The last time the band played in Louisville one of the songs they played included the entire band playing their instru-ments behind their backs-including Lorenzo Farrell who plays an upright bass, and the drummer. Needless to say, they are a fun band to see live.
Estrin plays excellent harmonica on this CD. With the exception of those songs with his humorous lyrics (like “Back from the Dead”), I prefer him playing the harp. His playing is reminiscent of Sonny Boy Williamson II, Little Walter, and some is distinctly his.
My favorite song on the CD is one titled “Catchin’ Hell” which features a catchy guitar rhythm on a slow song. There are three instrumental songs on the CD. “Earthquake” will remind you of the song “Apache” while another of the instrumen-tals “Cool Breeze” is a slow jazzy tune. In many respects, I think this CD surpasses the one before it, not because of the change in guitarists, but the music selection seems to have taken a fresh approach. That may be Kid’s influence, but I tend to think that Estrin is the mastermind here.
Rick Estrin and the Nightcats are scheduled to be in Louisville Tuesday October 6. Make it a point to see this band, buy their new CD and get it signed. See you there.

New Music Reviews!
Nicole Hart Treasure Blues Leaf Records
Combining a well-executed dose of blues, soul, roots and r&b, Nicole Hart's latest release could be described as its title suggests. While not dazzling or earth-shattering, it is solid and well-produced, anchored around the vocals of little-known Hart and her husband and musical ar-ranger/keyboardist Lance Ong.
In fact, it is Ong's keyboard/piano work throughout the 11 tunes that truly anchor the instrumen-tal portions. Hart's voice is clear, sometimes overdubbed for harmony, and sweet. At times she sounds a bit like a smoother Deb Callahan. The guitar work is also quite good, shared by Sonny Kenn, Ron Rauso and Marc Shulman, although it is not ever designated in the liner notes just who is playing what lead or solo part.
While Hart and company aren't exactly household names, there is one guest who makes an appearance who is well known: guitarist Albert Castiglia. His guitar work on "You Were Lyin' To Me" (track three) is really good--however, his overly soft vocal duet with Hart leaves something to be desired.
All the tunes are basically good. The best ones are the bluesy, slow-swinging ones, although "Heart Trouble" (track two) has a very strong country flavor and will have you moving to the beat. Also, her version of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" is very well done with strong vocals and a nice piano-driven beat along with scorching guitar as a new element to this tune. Hart's attempt to vocally reach higher ground at the end of the song almost doesn't work, but overall it's a nice effort. "I Just Want to Cry" (track seven) again has lots of piano, with Hart doing some simple vocalizing in the intro and at times lowering her voice an octave, which sounds really nice. Finally, another tune that bears mentioning is track nine ("Gin House Blues"): an up-tempo, swinging blues that features some nice electric lap slide guitar.
