PRINCIPAL’S PEN Dear Parents, Families and Community Members,

With much  excitement  afoot  today  for Under  8s Day,  it  has been  a wonderful  time  celebrating  this  year’s  theme: Children are playing Country  to Coast –  Inspiring  learning  in  the early years  through  play. There was  play  and  fun  to  be  had  by  all. Thank  you  Mrs  Mason,  Mrs  Shaw  and  Ms  Ribot  for  the organisation and running of this  important event for our school and cluster of schools. Thank you to our wonderful ladies in the tuckshop  ensuring  all  students  and  adults were  amply  catered for. A true team effort for our precious children!

Congratulations  to  our  soccer  teams  who  travelled  to Pittsworth  last  Friday  and  demonstrated  their  soccer  prowess and  more  importantly,  their  sportsmanship,  with  one  of  our Biddeston  teams  winning  the  grand  final.  Thank  you  to  Mr Young and Mr Morris for their time and effort on this event.  We have  some  talented  students who  have  been  selected  for  the Rossvale soccer team to play  in Toowoomba at a  future soccer carnival. Well done Ace, Cianna, Ruby, Nick H, Fletcher, Dustin, Danielle, Nicholas D, Charlotte, Eva  and Zarcody. What  a  fine effort.

We currently have our musical students in Years 3 to 6 attending the  annual  Choir  Camp  in  Pittsworth,  being  run  by  Mrs Wheeldon. The final concert to showcase the students’ learning over the three days will be held at the Pittsworth Town Hall from 7pm  for a gold coin donation. Thank you  to Mrs Wheeldon  for sharing her expertise in offering this opportunity and thank you to Mrs Huffam for being our school representative in generously giving her time to be there each day, assisting students.

This term  in English the Year 2/3 students have been working towards writing  a  persuasive  letter.  They  have  learned  about modality  and  evaluative  language,  giving  their  opinion  and including  supporting  detail  to  justify  their  stance.  They  are learning to make comparisons and connect events from a story to  their  personal  experience.  The  Year  4/5/6  students  have practised  both  narrative  and  persuasive  writing  techniques. Students will also listen to, read and view novels and films with a range of characters  involving  flashbacks or shifts  in  time. They will create a written comparison of a novel and the film version of the novel.  Everyday  learning  tip: The  social and emotional  learning  that students  experience  through  the  Respectful  Relationships education  program  can  be  reinforced  informally  at  home.  A suggestion for engaging your child and consolidating their social and  emotional  learning:  Encourage  and  model  positive interaction with others.

Be  Safe,  Be  Respectful,  Be  Responsible  The  students  have been  reminded of  the  importance of being punctual after play and being back in class on time, ready to learn.

There will be no athletics next week, with athletics  resuming on Tuesday 30th June. The remaining sessions will be run on the following  dates:  Tuesday  6th,  Wednesday  7th,  Tuesday  13th, Wednesday 14th, Tuesday 20th and Tuesday 21st.

TRAX  Sports  Education  Tours  that  South  West Indigenous  Network  (SWIN)  will  be  running  in  the Dalby/Jondaryan area will visit our school on Friday 26th May  11:50am  to  1:15pm.  SWIN  will  bring  accredited Development  Officers  from  State  or  National  Sporting Organisations  to  run  sessions  at  the  school.  This  is intended to give students the opportunity to try different sports and  to promote a healthy  lifestyle  through sport. These  sessions  are always  a  lot of  fun  for  the  students. For  this  TRAX  Tour,  the  following  sports  will  be represented: Queensland Touch Football, National Rugby League, Golf Queensland, Hockey Queensland, Baseball Queensland,  Indigenous Traditional Games  (SWIN). The TRAX  sessions  are  completely  FREE,  and  open  to  all students to participate. All Officers and Staff that run the activities  have  blue  cards  and  relevant  accreditation  to conduct  the  activities. We  are  very  excited  to have  this opportunity at our school.

Shooting  for the Stars will be  run on Tuesday 23rd May for selected students. Have a great day!

The  very  popular  P&C  Thermomix winning  ticket was drawn  last Friday, with Sarah Kelly being  the very  lucky winner. Thank  you  to Mel  for  organising  this  and  to  all who sold and bought tickets.  The next P&C meeting is Monday 5th June at 4pm in the library. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Assistant Regional Director Mr Graeme Lacey (ARD) will be visiting the school on Friday 26th May from 11:30am to discuss student achievement and school progress.

Centenary  Preparations  Did  you  know  the  Principal’s residence was built in 1964?  Before that the Principal and head  teachers  boarded with  local  families.   No  excuses for  homework  not  done  in  that  family!  The  next Centenary meeting is on Monday 22nd May at 6pm in the school  library. Everyone  is welcome  and  if  you  know of community  members  who  may  be  interested,  please invite  them  along.  The  Centenary  will  be  held  on Saturday 19th October 2019.

Congratulations  to  past  student,  Olivia  Holgate  who represented  her  high  school,  St  Ursula’s  at  the  recent Maths  Team  Challenge  and  being  a  member  of  the winning  team. Well  done, Olivia! We  are  very  proud  of our students, present and past.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind Regards,                                                                          Sharon
