He is well remembered for his unwavering commitment to children and their families. This note, from an eight-year old boy, illustrates the appreciation that many people expressed through the years for the help he has given them: “Dear your honor. I thank you so much for letting my mom and dad adopt me. I’ll be nine soon, and I’m in the Cub Scouts ... Here’s a picture of me. I’m also giving you four cents, because you deserve it.” Judge Gringold put the four pennies into a children’s fund. “It makes it all worthwhile,” he told the Chicago Daily News. Four pennies meant a great deal to the judge because it was given from a truly thankful heart. We can only imagine how much more God appreciates our thankfulness. He has taken us from a state of abandonment to adoption into his own family. He looks down on the world, searching for hearts that are truly thankful. Luke 17 describes a time when Jesus healed ten leapers. Only one came back, fell at his feet, and gave thanks. To this, Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?” (v. 17). Might the Lord ask the same question of us this Thanksgiving? Forbes magazine describes a survey in which, “Three in five Americans say they’d rather do something else rather than reflect on what they’re thankful for on Thanksgiving. Top activities respondents gave priority over being thankful included watching football, watching streaming media, reading a book, or spending time with a pet.” 1 Why would we not choose to take one day a year to focus on thanksgiving? Further, why not try to be thankful every day? Gratefulness promotes happiness. 2 It also fosters success in life. 3 Various studies have shown the great physiological, psychological, and spiritual benefits of carrying gratitude in our hearts. The best evidence for positive results of the thankful heart comes to the one who chooses to be thankful. To such a one, deepening joy and fulfillment become proof and reward enough. 1 https://www.forbes.com/sites/amymorin/2015/11/21/survey-reveals-surprising-reasons-why- americans-arent-likely-to-be-thankful-this-thanksgiving/#2fc8bae13b78 2 https://science.howstuffworks.com/life/inside-the-mind/emotions/gratitude-and-happiness1.htm 3 http://the8percent.com/why-being-truly-grateful-is-the-ultimate-key-to-success/

So many of you have been busy buying items for our Pack-A-Box Party and packingyour personal boxes to be sent to children all over the world. What a joy it is to seeyou carrying your boxes into church. THANK YOU!Here are the important dates to remember:

· November 9: Set-up for Pack-a-Box Party at 9:00 AM· November 10: Pack-A-Box PartyStarting at 9:00 AM, we will pack boxes until we run out of contents; everyoneis invited—parents and grandparents with children, youth, and adults—you willfind this experience so rewarding! We usually are done around noon, but comefor whatever time you can. Whether you pack many or just a few, we willappreciate your time. Refreshments will be available.· November 11: “Pennies for Boxes” CollectionWe hope you have been saving your small change to help defray the cost ofshipping Pack-A-Box Party boxes. These contributions will be collected duringworship services on Sunday, Nov. 11.· November 12-19: Collection WeekA sign-up sheet is at the Church Office Window. Please sign up for as manythree-hour periods as you can—starting at 9 AM and ending at 6 PM. Our BoyScout troop will take care of Sunday afternoon. WMIT will be broadcasting fromour site on Nov. 13, 3–7 PM; we’ll need extra help then, because many willchoose that time to drop off their boxes.· November 18: OCC Dedication SundayAt the 10:55 AM service we will dedicate all boxes done by church membersand at the Pack-A-Box party.

If you are new to packing boxes, here are some guidelines:· All boxes should contain bar soap, a washcloth, and a tooth-brush. Other hygien-ic items (combs, brushes, lip balm, and hair accessories) are great. But please notoothpaste or liquids like shampoo, liquid soap, or lotion, or aerosol cans.· School supplies are cherished by children 5 years and above; many cannotattend school unless they have supplies. Consider how items are used—if yougive pencils, a sharpener, eraser and paper make the gift complete. For youngerchildren, large crayons, paper, and coloring books work well.· Small games and puzzles appropriate to the age group are great as long asthey do not require knowledge of English.· Toys are also greatly valued—a stuffed animal, dolls, toy cars, and clothes areprized by younger children. For the older children, consider getting tools, cal-culators, balls and air pumps, jump ropes, sewing kits, small musical instru-ments, and craft kits. If you include a toy or flashlight that requires batteries, include extra batteries. Do not include used or damaged items; war-relateditems such as toy guns, knives, or military figures; breakable items such assnow globes or glass containers.· PLEASE do not include any candy or chocolate or food—these will beremoved before shipping.· PLEASE DO REMOVE all packaging from all items; many communities do nothave a means of collecting trash, so packaging is just thrown on the ground.· You do not need to stuff the box full; room will be needed for the message ofChrist’s love.

COLLECTION MONTH is finally here!

· Include a personal note and photoof you or your family; if you includeyour address, the child may be ableto write you.· Make sure you label your boxeswith the gender and age group of thechild the box is intended for. The bestway to do this is to go to the websitehttp://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/follow-your-box/#step5 to donate $9 perbox online. You will receive a labeland an email about the country whereyour box was delivered.

We are often asked about what happensto the boxes after you bring them tochurch. They are placed in cartons andtaken to the distribution center inCharlotte. There they are opened—onlyto verify that there are no prohibiteditems such as liquids, candy, or militarytoys—but the boxes are left intact. Weask you to pray for the children who willreceive your boxes and know that Godled you on what to include in the boxesthat will make them perfect for therecipients.

MISSIONARY CARE COMMITTEECANDY RIEGER

MISSIONARY VENTURESDOMINICAN REPUBLIC - HAITI - USA (ORLANDO)

Years ago I felt God was telling me that my mission was “Hope ComesWalking,” He came in the flesh over two thousand years ago and walked thisearth. He continues to come in that way—in us—to bring hope to peopleliving in darkness. August 17 was my 20-year mark serving the Lord on theforeign field and, though details of my ministry have changed and evolvedsomewhat, God’s call on my life has not. He still lives in me to bring hope.A big shift for me has been in dividing time between ministry in Haiti and theDominican Republic and ministry in more global context working out of theMissionary Ventures’ Orlando office. Below are a few highlights of recentmonths, first from this divided island of Hispaniola and then regarding newresponsibilities taking me to new parts of the world. In June, I was blessed to revisit so many of my friends and pastors in Haiti, reconnecting for future projects (teacher conferences and construction andsanitation), and escorting a missionary candidate as she considered Haiti asher mission home. The trip just confirmed the deep love God has put in myheart for this country and its people. My time in Orlando is being used todraw new faces and ideas into Haiti outreach! This summer I received news that Volmi Floreal hadsuccessfully finished his high school education(this isin Haiti)! He is the 3rd or 4th student we’ve been ableto fund from grade 1 to finish! Please join me inpraying that I’ll be able to secure funds so that he andone other (FanFan) will be able to now attendvocational school equipping them for gainfulemployment. There are still three high school studentswho are looking to us for funding. God has beenfaithful over the last decade. I cannot imagine thisblessing suspended.Along with stories of victory, we sometimes go through seeming failures aswell. No missionary likes to report these. We feel sometimes that WE are thefailure, or we worry that folks back home will become discouraged and ceasesupport. I am struggling at present with a project that seemed so promising, but now seems a hurdle too high for me. I’m speaking of the sewing classes inEl Puente, Dominican Republic. Thanks to many of you, we have threemachines, three tables, oodles of material and notions. What we don’t have isa teacher who speaks Spanish and is able to assist me in getting the classesstarted. It’s just too much for me on my own at the moment. So, what does amissionary do? Like you, we get on our knees and ask, “What do You want meto do, Lord?” I’ve decided to visit each of the women in El Puente and focusthem on sewing for the future, but an evening Bible study for the present.Sewing is still “on the table” (pun intended), but it’s being postponed for now.I’ve been learning so much about the home side of missions in MissionaryVentures Orlando office – the administrative concerns, the backgroundsupport work, the activity of promoting and keeping social media postscurrent, and so much more! So, I am busy. I am grateful beyond words for the life and opportunities Godhas given me. Please join me in prayer that all I say and do will get “maxglory” for our Lord Jesus. Pray I won’t become dull or lazy or discouraged—in other words, pray with me that I will be faithful and alert, remembering thatwe are in a warfare even as we’re being led in a train of triumph.I look forward to visiting Hendersonville SOON, and this time I trust nohurricane will keep me away!Much much love to my HPC family.Candy

Dear Friends and Family,It’s one month and counting that Davidhas beenaboard theLogos Hope, and he isadjustingwell to theschedule andactivities ofthe ship.Since he boarded on Sept.19, the shiphas visited three port cities: PuertoQuetzal, Guatemala, Acajutla, ElSalvador, and La Union, El Salvador. At least through the end of October,David will work five days, with Sundayand Monday as ‘C-days’. C-days aredays to connect with people, either byparticipating in Deck 4 activities, orjoining a team to minister off ship.Several Sundays he has joined a teamthat has traveled off-ship to minister indifferent churches. On October 7, theywent to the home of a woman whohad visited the ship. They prayed forher husband, who was recovering fromknee surgery. They prayed for thefamily to repent of hurt and anger, andfor the children and neighbors as well.David prayed for those that had pain.Another C-day outing was with a teamto share with locals in a shopping mall. While there David bought a pair ofshoes for his ship-mother’s birthday. She had seen a pair of shoes that sheliked, but thought they were tooexpensive ($37). David purchased theshoes, hoping he chose the correctsize. Before the birthday celebrationaboard ship the following night, Davidprayed that somehow the shoes wouldfit. And, they did. Amazingly her size 6foot fit the size 8 shoe that David hadpurchased. God loves to answer ourprayers, even in small things like theproper shoe size.Even with all the ministry that David isinvolved in, he spends much of histime on welding-related work. chanceto be involved with people of like-minded spirit and commitment. Please continue to pray for David andthe Logos Hope ministry.Blessings,Jan Demirgian for David Demirgianaboard the Logos Hope

Many thanks for the prayers, flowers and food during this time ofgreat loss.Geri Sorrell

Thanks for the help! Thanks to Chip Gilbert for each of the many, many shovels full of whitesand added to the children’s sand box on the playground recently.Earlier Chip had tilled the mulched playground to “fluff up” the areawhere children swing, slide, jimp and enjoy having a great time. Chip’s“fluffing” softens the blow when a child falls while playing. Thanks to Ray Palmer, Tommy Brendel and Ralph Mitchell for theinstallation of three new, taller toilets—the first of several exchanges tobe made in the near future. Thanks to Don Haynes for engineering a proper storage rack for nu-merous banners used throughout the year to announce to the commu-nity the various activities and programs of our church. Thanks in advance to those who will be involved in painting the SessionRoom soon.

I’ll Have It My Way,

New in our library, I’ll Have It MyWay, is written by Hattie Bryantwho wrote it after coming face-to-face with death in the modern ageas she watched doctors do every-thing possible to keep her dyingmother alive. Knowing it was notwhat her mother wanted, Hattielaunched a 25-year quest to dis-cover how to ensure our wishesat end-of-life are known and ful-filled with love and understanding.Written with warmth, this bookhelped me realize that plansneed to be made well in advanceof what we might think will be ourtime to leave this earth. This meansplans that are actually writtendown in black and white andshared with our loved ones. Theresult is an advance care planthat includes the designation of atrusted person to speak for some-one when they can’t, instructionsfor the type of care a personwants, and a description of what

Stephen Ministry Training Classes for 2019Have you ever considered training to become a Stephen Minister? Do you know of someone who is compassionate and agood listener who would make a wonderful Stephen Minister? Now is the time to seek whether this is the time to consideranswering God’s call or talk to your friend about joining this ministry. Our church, in conjunction with Grace Lutheran and MillsRiver UMC will be holding classes at Grace starting Monday, January 7, 2019, 5:30-8:30 PM. Those who are interested pleasecall John Lampley to set up a meeting to discuss these classes and one’s readiness to become a Stephen Minister. What Stephen Ministers Do:

• Pray. We pray daily for our Care Receivers (CRs) and ask for God’s guidance as we reveal His love to thosemost in need to experience it.

• Care for the Care Receiver. We are assigned to people in moderate crisis or struggling with difficultsituations and need caring support. Stephen Minister’s “care” and God’s “cure” help CRs resolve thedifficulty and achieve growth. Some of the important skills we learn during training include:

Listening: one of the most important skills is to really listen as they talk through their difficulties.Dealing with feelings: we help our CRs recognize, express, and accept their feelings.Sharing distinctively Christian caring resources: sharing prayer, Scripture, and other caring gestures.Remaining process-oriented: we don’t try to “fix” the CR’s problems; we focus on the caregiving process and rely onGod to achieve results.Relating assertively: respecting the needs of both the CR and ourselves.Maintaining boundaries: setting appropriate boundaries to help CRs remain as independent as possible.Recommending professional care when necessary: we are not trained to care for those who are suicidal, severelydepressed, abusive, or homicidal, or abusing drugs of alcohol; but we learn to recognize these and help CRs identifyappropriate professional care.

• Maintain Confidentiality. This is crucial in any caring relationship.• Help Identify People in Need of Stephen Ministry.• Participate in twice monthly Supervision and Continuing Education Sessions.• Help the Congregation Understand and Appreciate Stephen Ministry.
