A year of restorati on~
As we come to the close of the 2018-2019 school year, it is a good ti me to refl ect on the past year and share a few fi nal thoughts ~ I am deeply grateful to be a leader in a caring community that is student driven and engaged in our schools.
You’ve allowed me the chance to learn and grow as we celebrated our students’ successes and tackled the challenges that came our way. It seems as the years pass, we have to work harder to get beyond the unfortunate negati vity that enters our lives. As parents, students, educators and community members, despite the diff erences in our world, we are all on a mission to lead happy and producti ve lives. As true advocates for children, we must fi nd the good in every situati on and not allow for our spirit to suff er.
I want to thank all of our Fitzgerald families, students, teachers, staff and community members for your outstanding work and support. This school year has been one of
predicaments, opportunity, change, growth and success. I am thankful for everyone’s confi dence and trust in decisions that have been made and the impact we’ve endured as a community. Fitzgerald Public Schools is strong! We are a safe and driven district that wants what’s best for our children and always ready to tackle what comes next. We focus on the positi ve aspects of a challenge and look ahead with opti mism and hope. We are #FitzNati on!
I am proud of a number of historical events accomplished this year. A few stand out stronger than others. One of the many stories to highlight is the support our community showed by passing the 2019 Bond Proposal on May 7th. This is a wonderful opportunity for our schools, students, staff and community. The passing of this bond will refl ect positi vely on homeowner property values, allow us to enhance student safety, upgrade technology, make interior and exterior renovati ons and conti nue providing educati onal programs that remain competi ti ve with other districts. You will begin to see change this summer!
The front page news stories we like to tell are those of our students. As educators, our goal is to encourage the passions, talents and skills students possess. We accomplish this by truly getti ng to know the children so we can help them grow as individuals. Our students, at each level, conti nue to amaze us daily. Whether they are excelling in the classroom, on a stage, on the athleti c fi eld or as a leader in an organizati on, Fitzgerald students are making their mark and taking charge of their own educati on. We conti nue to build relati onships with our students as we help them fi nd success, in whatever form that may be. Our teachers, administrators, counselors, secretaries, bus drivers, custodians and cafeteria workers are here to help your student succeed. We cannot thank you enough for partnering with us all year long to make this happen. Conti nue to follow our social media feeds and visit our website to view the wonderful events, accomplishments and highlights we share.
It has been my pleasure to serve as your Superintendent and a member of the Fitzgerald family. I am looking forward to next year. Stay positi ve, be safe and have an enjoyable and relaxing summer. ~Laurie Fournier

Does Popcorn Grow?
Students in Mrs. Larson and Ms. Lee’s room were eagerly checking to see if popcorn kernels can grow during their
“Is it Alive?” study. Students planted popcorn kernels in wet paper towel and hypothesized what would happen. Predicti ons were mixed but more friends thought that the kernels would grow and they did! Observati ons were recorded in a classroom journal. At the conclusion of the study, students took the ker-nels home to transplant into the ground.
Free Head Start and Preschool
Federally funded Head Start for three and four year olds and State funded Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) for
eligible four year olds are two FREE preschool programs off ered at Schofi eld Early Childhood Center.
Children enrolling in GSRP must be 4 years old by September 1, 2019. Our GSRP program is designed to promote growth in language, social/emoti onal development, cogniti ve, fi ne motor, gross motor and self-help skills. Three hour sessions are off ered in the morning and aft ernoon along with one full day session.
Register for GSRP online today by visiti ng fi tz.k12.mi.us/register. For further informati on, call 586-757-4620. Register for Head Start by calling 586-469-5215.
We are excited for Kindergarten!
Preschool students at Schofi eld Early Childhood Center visited the Kindergarten classrooms. Each child was able to meet the Kindergarten teachers and get a
“sneak-peek” of what a Kindergarten day would look like. Students were even able to shop in the Kindergarten store for supplies to bring on the fi rst day of school and also received a packet of acti viti es they can do at home with their families.
Preschool Prep
Are you looking for something to do with your young child this summer? Ms LaDon Williams with the Village Early Learning
Resource invites parents and children heading to preschool in the fall to join her at Mound Park on Tuesday’s, from 10:30-12 noon. Acti viti es such as music, art, story ti me and play will be planned for parents and their litt le one to do together. As always, younger children are always welcome. It will run for four weeks from July 15-August 8 (same as elementary summer camp at Mound Park). For more informati on, call Ms. Williams at 586-239-9064.
Writi ng is an essenti al part of preschool literacy. In our preschool classrooms, students have the opportunity
to write everyday. One of their favorite ways to write is in their journal. They come up with an idea, draw a picture of that idea and then dictate their story to the teacher. Watching the teacher put their words in print encourages not only writi ng but reading. Once their journal is complete, the children take it home to “read” it to their family.

Kindergarten Registration is Open
Families who live in the district are encouraged to register their child for kindergarten at any ti me. Register
your child by visiti ng fi tz.k12.mi.us/register to complete the online registrati on packet. Please call the FPS offi ce at (586) 757-4620 if you have questi ons about the enrollment process.
Our kindergarten is a full day program and all district students can be bussed to and from school. Our curriculum acti vely engages children in hands-on learning experiences that build on the strengths, interests and needs of each child. It provides experiences that will help each child’s academic, social and emoti onal development.
Fitzgerald Off ers New Young 5’s Program
We are excited to be off ering a Young 5’s program for students who will be fi ve years of age between August 1
and December 1. The Young 5’s program is a bridge between Preschool and Kindergarten providing young learners the opportunity to learn and grow in an environment that is tailored to meet their academic and social needs. Kindergarten standards and curriculum have changed over the years and many skills that were taught in First Grade are now expected in Kindergarten. Research shows that these few months make a huge diff erence in what a child is ready to learn. The students will be enrolled in a two year Kindergarten program - fi rst year - Young 5’s, second year - Traditi onal Kindergarten. Register for Young 5’s online today by visiti ng fi tz.k12.mi.us/register, select Schofi eld then Kindergarten. For more informati on, please call 586-757-4620.
Kindergarten Screening
All students new to the district that are enrolling in kindergarten including Young 5’s, will meet with a
kindergarten teacher either August 14 or August 15 to be screened for kindergarten readiness. The 20 minute screening process will provide the teacher with informati on about placement for your child. The screening will address social/emoti onal development, communicati on and literacy skills, fi ne motor development and number knowledge. The screening appointments will be set up in June for those already registered and at the ti me of enrollment for those enrolling in the summer.
Popsicles on the Playground
Calling all kindergarteners! Join us at the Schofi eld Playground (behind the school) on
Monday, August 19, from 10-11:00 a.m. for Popsicles on the Playground. Meet new classmates, listen to stories, create a countdown chain and cool off with a popsicle. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Questi ons? Call Schofi eld aft er August 14th at (586) 757-5150.
Environment Study
One of our Science Units is the study of plants and animals and what they need in order to live. Students
learned that when birds take things from the environment to build a nest they are changing the environment. Students also learned that birds build a nest for shelter to keep them safe. Students in Mrs. Nowak’s room built a nest from items they found in the school environment.
Writing is Fun in Kindergarten
Students in Mrs. Lau’s class love to write! They have learned how to write a birthday party invitati on, an informati onal
story about elephants, an opinion piece about an animal they liked or didn’t like and a personal narrati ve story about what they did with a friend. Once they complete their story with a hand drawn picture, they get to read it with Mrs. Swalec, Principal. They are so proud!
Catching Kindness
Our kindergarten students are learning about being kind to
others. Helping a friend open his milk carton or zip his jacket, comforti ng a friend who is feeling sad or lonely, cooperati ng together to complete a puzzle, taking turns on the swings, and playing a game together are some of the ways our students have shown kindness to each other this year.
