Mother of 11 FindsHope, Determination
Sonia does not tell the stereotypical homelessstory. One day in 2005, she simply ran outof money.
The 39-year-old mother of 11 lost her job.Then, with little notice, her landlord sold thehouse she was renting. Suddenly, she had noincome, and she had no home.
Facing these devastating circumstances,Sonia did what any mother would do — shereached out for help. Today, Sonia’s voice isfilled with optimism as she recounts her experi-ence of first contacting Community Partnershipfor Homeless.
“They put my kids in school, and now I havea job working for the Florida City Prison,” she said.
In fact, Sonia is a food services supervisor forthe criminal justice system — a steady job thathelps ensure her children, ranging in ages from 2 to 20, have food on the table and a roof overtheir heads. Sonia’s typical work day starts at 4 a.m. and runs until 6:30 p.m.
For now, Sonia and her family live in a two-bedroom home provided by Camillus House,but Sonia said she has big plans for her family’sfuture. Someday, she hopes to move her familyinto a five-bedroom, three-bathroom house.
“My goal is to move and do business from myhome so I can spend more time with my kids,”Sonia said. “Their legs are stretching, and they’regetting bigger.”
She’ll also need space for her entrepreneurialspirit. Sonia is pursuing an opportunity to sellMary Kay cosmetics, and she is also looking intoreal estate. She recently bought a computer and aprinter to pursue these ventures.
“I will continue to try and climb up the ladder,”she said.
Community Partnership for Homeless providedSonia the essential services she needed to keep herfamily healthy and the children in school. CPHalso helped Sonia find a new job and a new home.
Most of all, Community Partnership forHomeless has armed Sonia with a new sense ofdetermination that has put her onto a path for success.

Ramon A. Rasco, an attorney for the law firm of PodhurstOrseck, and Ken Oates, a project executive with TurnerConstruction are the newest faces on the board ofCommunity Partnership for Homeless (CPH).
In their new roles, Rasco and Oates will join fellow boardmembers, including current Chairman Robert E. Chisholmand Founding Chairman Alvah H. Chapman, Jr., in helpingto address issues and raise funding for the residents at CPH’s two homeless assistance centers.
Rasco, a graduate of HarvardCollege, earned his law degree from theColumbia University School of Law. Heis a member of The Florida Bar,American Association of Justice, Miami-Dade Justice Association, Dade CountyBar Association and the CubanAmerican Bar Association. He alsoserves on the young leaders task forceand steering committee for the Beacon
Council and is Vice President and Board Member for theDrug Free Youth In Town organization.
As an accomplished executive in theFlorida construction industry, Oateshas devoted more than 27 years of hiscareer towards building for the future.The Grand Flamingo, The Continuum,Avenue, plus The Colonnade Hotel andOffice Building are just a few shiningexamples of the projects Oates hasoverseen during his tenure with TurnerConstruction.
Oates received an MBA from the University of Miamiand obtained a B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering from theGeorgia Institute of Technology.

We have great news to sharewith you this season. While manyof us are busy making arrangementsto spend some vacation time withfamily, the children residing atCommunity Partnership forHomeless already are having theirshare of fun. The children are beinggiven the chance to attend locallysponsored field trips and summercamp, where activities can include
swimming, bowling, movies and trips to local parks andlibraries.
To continue with this festive mood, planning for ourbiggest fundraising event of the year, the Sixth Annual FallGala, is proving to be a huge success. This almost sold-outevent, slated for Friday, October 26, at the JW MarriottHotel along Brickell Avenue, promises to be even moreexciting than the last.
Last year’s gala was our most successful ever as we raisedmore than $1.4 million for Community Partnership for Homeless. As you know, this annual event is critical toour financial stability and serves as a strong statement thatwe all can and will help the homeless.
In addition, we have several events planned for 2008. For the sports enthusiasts among us, mark your calendarsfor next year’s BlueCross BlueShield Celebrity 5K scheduledfor March 30, 2008. Building on this year’s success, theCPH 5K event planning team is working hard to exceedparticipation beyond 3,000 people in 2008. Proceeds fromthe race benefit Community Partnership for Homeless.
As we plan ahead, it is important to acknowledge thosewho have helped us help so many in need.
This past April, many of us gathered together at theRusty Pelican Restaurant in Key Biscayne to honor and recognize the achievements of our volunteers and boardmembers. This Volunteer Recognition Luncheon is just oneway to say “thank you” to everyone who has touched thelives of those we so humbly serve. The commitments ofeach and every person involved with CommunityPartnership for Homeless help ensure our success.
In this edition of our newsletter, you will have an oppor-tunity to learn more about Ken Oates and Ray Rasco whoare newest members on CPH’s Executive Board ofDirectors. You can also read about the Next GenerationCouncil’s efforts to boost awareness and participationamong many of South Florida up-and-coming business andcommunity leaders. Nearly 300 volunteers attended Community Partnership forHomeless’ Annual Volunteer Luncheon on Thursday, April 27, 2007 at The Rusty Pelican on Key Biscayne. The event
honored the wonderful and invaluable volunteers for their care, support and devotion.
“Without you we could not exist and accomplish our mission ofserving the many men, women and families in our two centers,” saidChairman Robert E. Chisholm. “We extend our many thanks to you andthe thousands of volunteers that made this past year an overwhelmingsuccess for our organization,” said Chisholm as the volunteers cheered.
Each year CPH honors its dedicated volunteers. Awards were givento Lisa Blair, executive director of Miami-Dade Family LearningPartnership, who received the R. Ray Goode Volunteer RecognitionAward. Andrew Post from Fun4Kidz and Dianne Horn from theInteract Club at Gulliver Preparatory Schoolreceived appreciation awards.
Key speaker for the event was John Dickasonfrom St. Philips Episcopal Church. Mr. Dickasonpraised everyone who participated in the meal program at each center. The Centennial MiddleSchool Band provided the music.

Ramon A. Rasco, an attorney for the law firm of PodhurstOrseck, and Ken Oates, a project executive with TurnerConstruction are the newest faces on the board ofCommunity Partnership for Homeless (CPH).
In their new roles, Rasco and Oates will join fellow boardmembers, including current Chairman Robert E. Chisholmand Founding Chairman Alvah H. Chapman, Jr., in helpingto address issues and raise funding for the residents at CPH’s two homeless assistance centers.
Rasco, a graduate of HarvardCollege, earned his law degree from theColumbia University School of Law. Heis a member of The Florida Bar,American Association of Justice, Miami-Dade Justice Association, Dade CountyBar Association and the CubanAmerican Bar Association. He alsoserves on the young leaders task forceand steering committee for the Beacon
Council and is Vice President and Board Member for theDrug Free Youth In Town organization.
As an accomplished executive in theFlorida construction industry, Oateshas devoted more than 27 years of hiscareer towards building for the future.The Grand Flamingo, The Continuum,Avenue, plus The Colonnade Hotel andOffice Building are just a few shiningexamples of the projects Oates hasoverseen during his tenure with TurnerConstruction.
Oates received an MBA from the University of Miamiand obtained a B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering from theGeorgia Institute of Technology.

Dear Friends:
We have great news to sharewith you this season. While manyof us are busy making arrangementsto spend some vacation time withfamily, the children residing atCommunity Partnership forHomeless already are having theirshare of fun. The children are beinggiven the chance to attend locallysponsored field trips and summercamp, where activities can include
swimming, bowling, movies and trips to local parks andlibraries.
To continue with this festive mood, planning for ourbiggest fundraising event of the year, the Sixth Annual FallGala, is proving to be a huge success. This almost sold-outevent, slated for Friday, October 26, at the JW MarriottHotel along Brickell Avenue, promises to be even moreexciting than the last.
Last year’s gala was our most successful ever as we raisedmore than $1.4 million for Community Partnership for Homeless. As you know, this annual event is critical toour financial stability and serves as a strong statement thatwe all can and will help the homeless.
In addition, we have several events planned for 2008. For the sports enthusiasts among us, mark your calendarsfor next year’s BlueCross BlueShield Celebrity 5K scheduledfor March 30, 2008. Building on this year’s success, theCPH 5K event planning team is working hard to exceedparticipation beyond 3,000 people in 2008. Proceeds fromthe race benefit Community Partnership for Homeless.
As we plan ahead, it is important to acknowledge thosewho have helped us help so many in need.
This past April, many of us gathered together at theRusty Pelican Restaurant in Key Biscayne to honor and recognize the achievements of our volunteers and boardmembers. This Volunteer Recognition Luncheon is just oneway to say “thank you” to everyone who has touched thelives of those we so humbly serve. The commitments ofeach and every person involved with CommunityPartnership for Homeless help ensure our success.
In this edition of our newsletter, you will have an oppor-tunity to learn more about Ken Oates and Ray Rasco whoare newest members on CPH’s Executive Board ofDirectors. You can also read about the Next GenerationCouncil’s efforts to boost awareness and participationamong many of South Florida up-and-coming business andcommunity leaders. On that note, on behalf of everyone atCPH, thank you for your endless support and generosity.We look forward to yet another season of life-changingopportunities for our residents.

Nearly 300 volunteers attended Community Partnership forHomeless’ Annual Volunteer Luncheon on Thursday, April 27, 2007 at The Rusty Pelican on Key Biscayne. The event
honored the wonderful and invaluable volunteers for their care, support and devotion.
“Without you we could not exist and accomplish our mission ofserving the many men, women and families in our two centers,” saidChairman Robert E. Chisholm. “We extend our many thanks to you andthe thousands of volunteers that made this past year an overwhelmingsuccess for our organization,” said Chisholm as the volunteers cheered.
Each year CPH honors its dedicated volunteers. Awards were givento Lisa Blair, executive director of Miami-Dade Family LearningPartnership, who received the R. Ray Goode Volunteer RecognitionAward. Andrew Post from Fun4Kidz and Dianne Horn from theInteract Club at Gulliver Preparatory Schoolreceived appreciation awards.
Key speaker for the event was John Dickasonfrom St. Philips Episcopal Church. Mr. Dickasonpraised everyone who participated in the meal program at each center. The Centennial MiddleSchool Band provided the music.

Sonia does not tell the stereotypical homelessstory. One day in 2005, she simply ran outof money.
The 39-year-old mother of 11 lost her job.Then, with little notice, her landlord sold thehouse she was renting. Suddenly, she had noincome, and she had no home.
Facing these devastating circumstances,Sonia did what any mother would do — shereached out for help. Today, Sonia’s voice isfilled with optimism as she recounts her experi-ence of first contacting Community Partnershipfor Homeless.
“They put my kids in school, and now I havea job working for the Florida City Prison,” she said.
In fact, Sonia is a food services supervisor forthe criminal justice system — a steady job thathelps ensure her children, ranging in ages from 2 to 20, have food on the table and a roof overtheir heads. Sonia’s typical work day starts at 4 a.m. and runs until 6:30 p.m.
For now, Sonia and her family live in a two-bedroom home provided by Camillus House,but Sonia said she has big plans for her family’sfuture. Someday, she hopes to move her familyinto a five-bedroom, three-bathroom house.
“My goal is to move and do business from myhome so I can spend more time with my kids,”Sonia said. “Their legs are stretching, and they’regetting bigger.”
She’ll also need space for her entrepreneurialspirit. Sonia is pursuing an opportunity to sellMary Kay cosmetics, and she is also looking intoreal estate. She recently bought a computer and aprinter to pursue these ventures.
“I will continue to try and climb up the ladder,”she said.
