Page 1 Hello Monroe County 4-H, If you read the 4-H insert in the local papers you will see the info below. I for one am very excited to see WI 4-H get behind an organized promotion effort for 4-H. I hope this helps us build a great program as we move forward. 4‑H empowers young people with the skills to lead for a lifetime. It is a research-based experience that includes youth and adult partnerships, hands-on learning, and meaningful leadership opportunities. The Wisconsin 4-H program is committed to providing youth development opportunities and promoting positive change for all young people in Wisconsin. The 4-H Movement defines the values of the Wisconsin 4-H program and helps bring together its mission and vision. In Wisconsin 4-H we value: Being Yourself: Find and share your authentic sparks and interests; Belonging Together: Recognize, understand, respect, and appreciate each other; Building Connections: Grow positive relationships with peers and adults; Discovering Skills: Develop skills through hands-on learning to help you succeed and thrive; Exploring New Opportunities: Open the door to new experiences, projects, and places; and Giving Back to Your Community: Make meaningful contributions through community service and leadership. 4-H gives youth a platform from which to learn to lead. Adults partner with youth to mentor and share power as they plan a program that will impact the community in a positive way. Some youth do that through advocating for agriculture. These Ag-Vocates share the story of food. Some 4-Hers work in the community to share skills and knowledge. Others create or perform artistic projects to enhance our world. Now as we start again it is so important to give our kids a way to explore and find what motivates them.Says Monroe County Positive Youth Development Agent Joshua Goede. Today, Wisconsin 4-H is calling on members, volunteers, and communities to display their #wi4hmovement values as they work together to Make the Best, Better. How do you live out the Wisconsin 4-H Movement? 4-H is open to all youth grades kindergarten (5K) through one year past high school. I am also excited about the Thrive Survey (see Pg. 8). This is a large scale look at how well 4-H is meeting the needs of youth. We will get county as well as state level information back in December. 97 Monroe County youth will receive the invitation. To have meaningful data we need to hear from at least 45 of you. I want to know how we are doing so we can grow and continue to make the best better. Hello Monroe County 4-H,

If you read the 4-H insert in the local papers you will see the info below. The 4-H Movement defines the values of the Wisconsin 4-H program and helps bring together it’s mission and vision. In Wisconsin 4-H we value: Being Yourself: Find and share your authentic sparks and interests; Belonging Together: Recognize, understand, respect, and appreciate each other; Building Connections: Grow positive relationships with peers and adults; Discovering Skills: Develop skills through hands-on learning to help you succeed and thrive; Exploring New Opportunities: Open the door to new exper iences, projects, and places; and Giving Back to Your Community: Make meaningful contributions through community service and leadership. 4-H gives youth a platform from which to learn to lead. Adults partner with youth to mentor and share power as they plan a program that will impact the community in a positive way. Some youth do that through advocating for agriculture. For being the first show after COVID attendance was solid at the 2021 WI 4-H State Dog Show. There were 319 entries in the four competitions, 12 of them being Dog Bowl teams. The 166 exhibitors came from 24 Wisconsin counties. No show that big just happens. Monroe County 4-H is grateful to Show Chair Jackie Menn of Norwalk and her 30 4-H volunteers. Willing volunteers included the Dog Project youth and parents as well other 4-H families. They put in almost 750 hours starting in April ensuring a successful show. Jackie states it well saying, “The success of the show was due to the efforts of a very hard-working commit-tee who was willing to give of their time and talents.”

4-H Club News

Norwalk Clovers The Norwalk Clovers 4-h club held open arms to our many new members as they joined us at our meeting September 12. At the meeting we discussed the activities our club does throughout the year; from going to the corn maze, countywide activities, and the county fair. Our new members are excited to be joining us. At the meeting we elected new officers for this 4-h year and added a few new positions as well. Our new officers are President Hannah Bloyer, Vice president Vanessa Ornes, Secretary Morgan Jensen, Treasurer Maranda Arndt Reporter Elliott Ornes, and Photographers Addison Henthorne and Oakley Vasicek. Our 4-h club is active in many things. This past year we went to Tucker and Becky's pumpkin patch for our fall activity and Schell Family Farm in the spring. We learned quite a lot of information from the Schell family and they also helped the kiddos plant a seed to grow at home. Our club did several acts of community service this year. The first community service act we did was cleaning up the Norwalk Village Park; we cleaned trees, picked up garbage, pulled weeds out of the flower beds and replanted some flowers (with the help of Barb Ornes) and raked the wood chips back into the playground area. Our 4-h members are involved in a lot of activities when it comes to the fair. We have members in cultural arts, sewing, plants, baking, shooting sports, mechanical science, dogs, dairy, sheep, swine, rabbits, and poultry. A lot of our members took their way to the auction ring with their market sheep, swine, goat, and rabbit. Many of our members came home with trophies, banners, and ribbons. Our club is excited to start the new year with our joining members and to guide them through their journey. Respectfully submitted by Elliott Ornes

Project News & Information

Cedar Crest Ice Cream Flavor Contest Cedar Crest Ice Cream and the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation have teamed up again to present the “Cedar Crest Ice Cream 4-H Flavor Contest” for Wisconsin 4-H clubs. More than 1600 clubs are eligible to create and submit a flavor ‘recipe’ with the top clubs named as finalists, and the top flavor produced for summer 2022.

According to Brenda Scheider, Executive Director of the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation, the contest is a great opportunity for 4-H youth to work together to develop and name their flavor. “The most exciting part of the contest is the winning flavor will be available through Cedar Crest beginning next July.” The annual contest has already yielded popular flavors including Deep Woods, created by the Baraboo Valley 4-H Club and Wisconsin Campfire S’mores, created by the Springbrook 4-H Club of New Richmond. This year’s winning flavor was Tractor Tracks, created by the Country Clover 4-H Club in Green Lake County. A panel of ice cream experts chosen by Cedar Crest judges the entries. The company manufacturers more than 80 flavors of ice cream, along with frozen custard, sherbet and sorbet at its Manitowoc, Wisconsin, plant, and distributes products in five states. Many of the flavors now produced by Cedar Crest, including Wisconsin Campfire S’mores and Big Muddy, are a result of the contest. More information and the entry form are available at www.cedarcresticecream.com. Entries are due by November 12, 2021. The winner will be announced in December 2021.

this 5-question survey

Preparing for the New 4-H Year

The 4-H year officially begins in October each year. Even though the program years begins in October, 4-H enrollment begins in September. Counties in Wisconsin usually have an enrollment “deadline”. This deadline can be the cutoff for determining who can represent 4-H at certain events.

No matter the date of your local deadline, re-enrolling in 4-H through the 4-H Online portal as soon as possible ensures that you receive all 4-H communications and other important program news.

Adding, Dropping, or Keeping Projects Enrollment is the perfect time to add or remove projects in your 4-H Online profiles. 4-H members usually continue with the same projects from the year before, and it’s pretty normal to add one or two new ones as well! First year members are recommended to only select one or two projects for their first year. The second year of membership is a great time to pick between three to five total projects. Work with your youth to see what projects they liked, didn’t like, or want to learn more about. There is nothing wrong if your member decides to keep the same projects from the year before!

Member Goals On the next page, 4-H members are being challenged to write their personal 4-H goals for the new year. Settings goals can help with project selection, and it should help members plan out a path to success in the new 4-H year. See what goals your youth has chosen for the new 4-H year and identify ways to help them achieve those goals.

Family Member Goals Have those in your family set goals as well! Goals might include attending more club meetings, helping at 4-H activities, or participating in certain county events. Try to find ways to keep 4-H as a togetherness activity!

Club Goals Each year, 4-H clubs complete a Charter Renewal form. This form is usually completed by adult leaders and youth officers, but the charter might be talked about at a club meeting. Clubs are tasked with identifying club goals each year. Have your family brainstorm some S.M.A.R.T. goals for the club to strive for in the new year, such as planning an outreach event with a local community group or adding more welcoming activities for new families.

Reminder: 4-H members

in grades K-2 can only be signed up for the Cloverbud project!

S.M.A.R.T. Goals Goals are more likely to be successful when you give yourself something specific to aim for. Any of your resolutions for the new 4-H year should be S.M.A.R.T. Specific: Goals should be well defined and clear. Measurable: This will help you know when you ’ve been successful. Achievable: Be realistic! Think of things that will challenge you but are still doable. Relevant: Your goals should be important to you. Set goals that you want to complete! Timely: Give yourself a specific time frame to complete your goals.

Setting Goals Every year, many people create New Year’s Resolutions. These resolutions are goals for the new year. Fall is the beginning of the new 4-H year, which makes it the perfect time to set goals for about what you want to do!

What are your goals? Use this table to write goals that you want to accomplish in the new 4-H year. An example has been done for you. Notice that the example is S.M.A.R.T. See if you can find what parts of the goal are specific, measureable, attainable, relevant, and timely.
