A hay barn near Domett destroyed by fire. PHOTO: ALLAN GRIGG, HURUNUI PRINCIPAL RURAL FIRE OFFICER. A header, a hay barn and a roadside shelter belt are the latest victims of fire in North Canterbury as conditions become tinder dry. A brisk nor’west wind has had brigades on tenterhooks across the region and volunteers have had little sleep with fires at Mandeville, Burnt Hill, near Oxford, at the back of Rotherham and Domett. A hay barn burnt to the ground at Domett on Sunday night with volunteer firemen on site for five hours preventing it from spreading and dampening down hot spots to ensure it did not flare up again. A fire near Rotherham on Monday kept nine units busy with the wind playing havoc and fanning the fire into life again requiring a helicopter, which had earlier been turned away, to be recalled to help put it out. Hurunui principal rural fire officer Allan Grigg says the fires are a reminder to everyone to ensure that when using any machinery, mowers or motorbikes to stay away from dry vegetation and have water or a fire extinguisher on hand and to fit spark suppressants to motorbikes. He is also urging farmers with electric fences to turn down the voltage if possible to around 3000 volts. ‘‘Anything over 3000 creates the potential for arcs and sparks. Two or three fires in the district have been ignited by electric fences in the past couple of weeks,’’ says Mr Grigg. Meanwhile in the Waimakariri district a header was burnt out near Mandeville late Monday afternoon. The resulting fire burnt through almost two hectares of rank grass, coming close to a couple of homes and causing stress to livestock on lifestyle blocks. Waimakariri principal rural fire officer Tim Sheppard said the speed the fire raced across paddocks - much faster than you could run - was ‘‘frightening’’. It then got into a shelter belt leaping 50 metres at a time before taking hold again. ‘‘It looked pretty grim there for a while but fire fighters got on top of it and the next thing we were mopping up,’’ he said. $ $ $ Positive mood: Rga businesses look to future. — page 5. Roundabout to help traffic flowResidential growth hasresulted in a $1.8millionroundabout being built onStateHighwayOne just northofWoodend. The roundabout has been

on the drawing board forseveral years and nowwiththe growth of Pegasus and theprogress beingmade on theRavenswood village opposite, the time is deemed right tobuild the roundabout.Motorists are being advised

therewill be speedrestrictions and possible

delays as the duallaneroundabout is built.TheNZTransport Agency’s

ActingHighwayManagerPete Connors says theroundabout is being built toimprove safety and providebetter access on to thehighway fromPegasus Townand the soontobedevelopedRavenswoodVillage.‘‘Workwill be completed in

stages.‘‘The first stage is the

construction to thewest ofthe existing highway, of new

highway approaches, accesstoRavenswoodVillage andthewestern side of the newroundabout.‘‘Once this work is

completed, traffic will shift tothe new road andworkwillbegin constructing theremainder of the roundaboutand realigning access toPegasus Town,’’ he says.It expected it will take

around four and halfmonthsto complete the project andmotorists are being asked totake extra care travelling

through the area, slow downand observe speedrestrictions. The roundabout is being

funded by the developers ofPegasus andRavenswood.Mr Connors says when

completed, speed through theintersectionwill be reducedto 70km/h at the newroundabout andwill remain70km/h through toWoodend.North of the roundabout,

the speedwill be 80km/h toWaikuku before the openspeed limit applies.

New HS needed?Bulging roll . . . Educators are looking for solutions to accommodate growth as Rangiora High School’s roll continues to grow. FILE PHOTO.

Local educators areasking if ahigh schoolinAmberley couldbea solution toRangioraHighSchool’s bulging schoolroll.RangioraHighSchool principalPeggy

Burrows says the school’s roll of around1800 students is alreadybig enough for atown the size ofRangiora.Therearealready 408 year 9 students

enrolled for this year and the school has‘‘good retention rates in senior students’’.However,Ministry ofEducation

projections suggest the school roll couldgrow to 2500over thenext twodecades, whichMrsBurrows says is toobig. She suggests either a secondhigh school

is needed inRangioraor anewhigh schoolcouldbebuilt inAmberley forup to 800students.‘‘Wedon’t see it ashealthy to goabove

Island’s third largest school at the start oflast year, withBurnsideHighSchool inChristchurch the largestwith 2500students.MrsBurrowsbelieves if a school gets too

big it createproblems, with studentsgetting lost in the systemandpastoral carecanbecomemore challenging. However, there is some flexibility in

having 1800 students, as the school canprovide somesingle sex classes.‘‘Wekeep shrinkingour zone, butwhat

particularlywith the growth inRangiora. It’s a big step to go to a school of 1800students.Wedogetparents andyear 8studentswhocome tomebecause theyareworriedabout it.‘‘Iwouldalsobe concernedaboutwhat

Surfcasting for a fish and a prize

Sea, surf, sand and fishing rods . . . The annual Amberley Beach Surf Casting competitiondrew a good crowd last Sunday. PHOTO: AMANDA BOWES

By AMANDA BOWES

Each year, a friend and Imake anannualpilgrimage to theAmberleyBeachSurfcasting competition, in a neverending quest to catch the big one andbagone of the tantalising prizes on offer.Sometimeswe go alone, other timeswe

are joinedby localswho fancy aday outgetting roasted on the beach. After years of attending the event,we

havepacking down to a fine art and takesupplies thatwill cover our needs for farlonger than just oneday, or for anunlikely emergency (not just confined toembedded fishhooks, sandflies, cuts orjelly fish stings). This year, myhusbandwasn’tworking

andanother local keen fishermanwantedto joinus sohe could tick it off his bucketlist.Hehadkindly gone out thenight before

andbraved a creekdeep in theWekaPassto bag us aneel for bait.Having triedsquid, shellfish, crayfish andmanufacturedbait such as ‘‘SquidVicious’’ and ‘‘Gulp’’my contributionwasmeat fromanover fat ewe that hadbeenin the freezer for a couple years. Most yearswe leave a bit late andby the

timewe find a car park the only ones leftrequire thenwalking forwhat seemsaninterminable distancewith all our gear. This year, weweredetermined to get

there early and find a good spot to parkand fish.LeavingWaikari at 6.30am,wewere

registered by just after 7amand ready tofind theperfect spot. For oncewehit the jackpot and got a

park thatwas only a fewmetres fromwherewewould set up camp for theday.Thenext half hourwas spent getting

rods ready for the startingwhistle anddiscussing hook size, bait and the rules ofthe competition.Therewas a lightNorwester blowing

and itwas shapingup to be a scorcher.

Whilewealways dreamof catching thebig one, usually allwe catch is seaweedora snag so a few trips to a fishing store hadus armedwith all sorts of paraphernalia"guaranteed to catch fish."When youare only 5’4"wielding a 12

foot surfcasting rod canbequite achallenge, the biggest ofwhich is castingout far enough. With twoburlymenon tap this year to

throwout the lines on occasion (well, quite a fewoccasions actually) it certainlyhelped the shoulder not becomingcatatonic fromconstant casting!Next to us, a young fella hadonly been

fishing a short timewhenhepulled inhisfirst catch of theday a nice healthyKawhai. Somewhat encouragedby thisauspicious start, we thoughtwemight beinwith a chance.

Not long after casting out, I pulled in amagnificent paddle crab, whichwasdulyadmiredby those fishing either side. When themeasuringman turnedupon

his quad, I held out the crab as though itwas theHolyGrail from the sea. Itmeasured a respectable 11cmacross theback andwith that done, I returnedmycatch to the ocean. The youngster next to us continued to

pull in fish after fish, moreKawhai,YellowEyedMullets andof coursepaddle crabs. Our baitwas being taken as fast as it

could go out and therewashighexpectations all round.Theday grewhotter andhotter, with

thewindwhippingupanddying down.Theumbrellawehad came to grief

after a strong gust, so eventually the sea

was the only place to find relief.Like all good fishing expeditionsweall

had the one that got away witnessedbyothers, so not just a fishy story! The oldewemeat began rendering itself down inthe extremeheat and seemed to be a realhitwithwhat everwas lurking in thewaves.A lonedolphin cruisedupanddown the

line of breakers, perhaps chasing themullet, and seabirdswere aplenty lookingfor scraps.By early afternoon, theheatwas getting

toomuch, so I sat downon thewet sandwithmy fishing rod and let the breakersswirl around, cooling off overheated skin.Itwas a reasonably popular past timeas

more andmorepeople got into the sea tocool down, carefully avoiding themanyfishing lines.Well, wedidn’t catch the big one, but at

theprize giving, wewere lucky enough towin a spot prize, whichwas a famous first. The young fella besideuswon four

fishing rods as his fishwere all thelongestmeasured in the junior section.Every other junior received aLeatherman sonobodywent homeemptyhanded. In the senior section, a huge skate

measuring over twometres took out thetopprize forGPownsonby, while the restof the fishmeasuredwere codandKawhai, with only onedogfish.Driving home, I couldn’t help but think

how luckyweare to live in aplacewhererivers, mountains and lakes are on onedoor step, while the sea is only half anhour in the other direction. The competition is one of those

summerKiwi experiences that bringspeople together to collectively enjoy thechallenges of catching a fish, getoutrageously over exposed to the sun, saltand surf andmaybe gohomewith aprize.Longmay theAmberleyLionsClub

which organises the event keepdoing soandkeep the yearly tradition alive.

Challenges can ariseA summer such aswe have had so far, remindsme of just what a great place itis that we live. People often say tomethere is somuch opportunity to be hadfor those that actively seek it.For themost part, I agree, howeverwe

should not forget those that through nofault of their own, are not equipped toembrace all that our electorate has tooffer. For some families, achieving the

basics in life can be a challenge. The recent story, in the north of the

electorate, of amother and her plight tofind suitable housing for her sonwithcerebral palsy brought this home tome.Albeit at the last hurdle, a homehas

been found and everything is being doneto accommodate the family. In this situation, I contactedHousing

NewZealand, theMinistry of SocialDevelopment and theMinister’s office tohelp find a resolution. It seems timely to remind readers that,

as their localMember of Parliament, Iamhere to help themandwill dowhat Ican, when I can, to assist. I want thiselectorate to be a place that people fromall walks of life can enjoywithout theburden of unnecessary difficulties.

Sometimes, as with the case in point, the chances ofmy being able to facilitatea suitable outcome are far better if Ihear about a case sooner rather thanlater. On some occasions, theremay belittle I can do immediately to resolve aproblem, but it is helpful in the long runto know about a situation before iterupts into a situation requiring anurgent response. If you requiremy assistance, please

at delivering better public services. These include lifting educational

achievement and upskilling ourworkforce, providing better andmoreconvenient healthcare, gettingmorepeople off welfare and intowork, supporting the vulnerable, andmakingour communities safer.Wewant stable, sustainable growth

over the long term to supportNewZealanders and their families. With the busy election year behind us,

Fluctuations normalInHurunui, a district with apredominantly primary land based andvisitor industry economy, fluctuatingfortunes are normal, influenced bymanyfactors outside our control.Seasonalweather variations,

inevitable stormandweather events, national and internationalmarketproduct prices, financial and tradinginfluences, all conspire tomake lifeunpredictable and challenging in adistrict like ours.We certainly experienced all these in

2014 and a typical Canterbury dry spell isnowextending into 2015.Aswe contemplate the challenges and

opportunities in 2015, additional to theabove constant challenges, we areincreasingly challenged by thewidercommunity’s demands, via governmentpolicies, for higher environmentalstandards.Whilemost of us agreewith the need to

protect our environment, the challengeis, howdowe accomplish thatwithoutdestroying our small rural communities, people’s livelihoods, and stillmaintaintheNewZealand economy, let alonecontribute to government targets of 50percent increased agriculturalproductivity by 2025.The challenge ofmeeting higher

environmental standards impacts bothon our small urban communities and therural productive sector.

Funding infrastructure upgrades tomeet tougher sewer dischargeregulations is daunting, as ismeetingNewZealandDrinkingWater standards.Proposed changes in thewaywe fund

these utilities in the futurewill be animportant issue for the community thisyear.Meeting environmental standards in

ourwaterways is causing tensionbetween sections of our farmingcommunity and is amajor challengeahead. These issues can only be resolvedformutual benefit if all parties remainengaged in open and trusting dialogue.Adding to themixwehave yet to agree

on away forward tomeet anotherNational requirement, the protection ofBiodiversity, aswe review ourDistrictPlan. While our 2015 challenges appear

daunting, confronting themand findingsolutionswill be rewarding and ensurethe ongoing success and prosperity of ourgreat district.Workingwith next yearsYouth

Council, an outstanding group of youngpeople, encouraging them to extend theirleadership skills and get involved in theircommunity’s challenging issues is anexciting prospect.Leaving our district in good heart and

our youthwell prepared for a challengingand changingworld is the legacywewantto leave.

Young man to lead memorial rideIn honour . . . Fletcher Earl takes part in a short film produced by Terry King. Hewill also lead the cavalry intoWaikari on Anzac day.

When15 year oldFletcherEarldiscoveredhewas too young to ride in the100 year 100 horse rideplanned forAnzacday inWaikari, hewashighlydisappointed.Hehadhoped to ride alongsidehis

mother and sister in remembrance of hisgreat great uncle, JohnRobert Patterson, who left Canterbury to fight atGallipoli. But his disappointment soon turned to

joy, whenhewas offered apart in one ofthe several short films being producedbyTerryKing, remembering theCanterburyMountedRiflemen, who took their horsesoverseas to fight in theFirstWorldWar.‘‘I have always been really interested in

thehistory ofWorldWarOneand so it hasbeen really cool doing the film,’’saysFletcher.

Itwas a lot ofwork, butFletcher says heenjoyed everyminute of it. One lot offilming tookplace onWoodendbeach, atsunrise, where theyweredepictingfighting in thedesert, while another dayof filmingwas spent at Terry’s place.WhileFletcher usedhis ownhorse for

the filming at Terry’s, a horsewassupplied for the desert reenactment.Fletcher’s family have four horses on

their PyramidValley property andFletcher says althoughheenjoys ridingevery nowandagain, he is ‘‘too lazy’’ toride very often.‘‘I was told that asmy ridingwasn’t

totally flash, I had to get better to be in thefilms, so I practiced really hard.’’Stanley, one of theEarl’s horses, took to

filming like aduck towater andwasn’tphasedby the strange goings on suchasthe stunt horses having to lie downand

play dead.Fletcher’smum, Sharon andhis older sister, Alex, are getting their twohorses into shape for the ride, whichwillleaveThePeaksHall after a dawn serviceforWaikari and a service on theVillageGreen.Sharon says they are doing a lot of road

workwith thehorses and getting themused to strange sights and sounds, sowhen the event rolls around, thehorseswon’t be botheredby anything.WhileFletcher isn’t allowed to ride in the 100horseprocession, hehas beenbestowedwith thehonour of leading the cavalryintoWaikari on foot, with his riderlesshorse carrying apair of boots facingbackwards, in deference to the fallencavalrymenand their bravehorses.‘‘I am so lucky to be able to takepart in

the event and the filming, it has just beentotally awesome,’’ saysFletcher.

Lonnie says she hopes just readingabout the benefits will hopefully beenough tomotivate people to try some oftheir recipes.‘‘I encourage you to treat our blog like

a recipe book and just usewhat youwantfrom it, what fits andworkswith you. Afew small changes can lead to bigresults,’’ she says.So for nourishing and allergy friendly

When pupils at Rangiora Borough SchoolinKing Street return from their summerholidays on Tuesday, February 3, theywill notice something big ismissing. In their absence the J1J6 classroom

block has been demolished. Thework isstage three of the school’s extensiveproperty upgrade in preparation forstage four, the construction of a newbuildingwith 12 classrooms. The development is part of the

Government’s $22million upgrade offourNorth Canterbury schools, includingRangiora Borough, Oxford Area,Ashgrove and Southbrook, alongside a$14.9million development project atRangioraHigh School.Of the $22million, Rangiora Borough

has been allocated $7m.The upgrades are beingmade to

accommodate the population growth inNorth Canterbury since the Christchurchearthquakes during 2010 and 2011.HelenHirst, of Rangiora, who attended

the school during the 1930s said shewasshocked to see the building beingdemolished last week.‘‘I thought, there is another part ofmy

life that has been bulldozed away,’’ shesaid.Back then, duringHelen’s time at the

school, classrooms in the building, whichwas built in 1925, had been converted toopenair classrooms. It was the new thingto enablemore sunshine and light intoclassrooms, whichwas seen as a healthyoption for children.‘‘Theywere really quite a feature,’’

Helen said.‘‘They had doors facing north that

could slide right open and let the airthrough. Previously classrooms had highpitchedwindows andweremuchmoreenclosed,’’ she said.Rangiora Borough School principal

Alan Sutton said the old sixclassroomblockwas being replacedwith 12classrooms. Completionwas projectedfor September or October this year.‘‘It will be amodern learning

environment, much likewhat they haveat Pegasus,’’ he said. The school was built in 1873. The

sliding doors in the openair classrooms, whichHelen remembers, had beenreplaced by aluminiumframedwindowsat some point, Alan said, but hewasunsurewhen.

Everyweek dayCulverden 1 is crewed by a paidofficer and a volunteer and atnight and theweekend the crew isall voluntary. When it is called outa second vehicle is crewed andpersonnel are ready to come intothe station fromhome. Reusable coffee cupsaid clogged landfillsBy SHELLEY TOPP

The next time you dash into a cafe for atakeaway coffee, tea or hot chocolate, spare a thought for our bulging landfillsbecause singleuse takeaway cups are nolonger recyclable. But inNorth Canterbury, some cafes

have already clicked on to the idea ofreusable coffee cups to help reduce theamount of rubbish headed to landfill.SophieWang, coowner of theGood

Street Deli inRangiora, says they beganselling reusable cups to providecustomerswith an environmentallyfriendly alternative to the singleusecups.Their brightlycoloured range ofNew

ZealandmadeUndergroundCoffeeCompany reusable cups are provingpopular with customers. At Amberley’s Little VintageEspresso

Cafe, many customers bring their ownreusable takeaway cups, and have doneso since the cafe opened in April 2013,says coowner VanessaHanna.KatieNimmo, Sustainability Projects

Facilitator at theUniversity ofCanterbury Sustainability Office saysthe endpoint recycler in Chinawill nolonger accept recyclable cups due totakeaway cups contaminatingmorevaluable recyclable paper andcardboardwith the remnant traces ofleftover coffee, hot chocolate and tea.

‘‘There are also problemswithrecycling the coating on the inside of thecups. Recycling fromNewZealand isregularly audited and in some casesrecyclingwith high levels ofcontamination are refused at the borderand sent right back toNewZealand atour cost. These shipments then have tobe dumped in the landfill at yet anothercost.’’KatieNimmo says the biggest positive

impact we can have on this problem is tostop using singleuse takeaway cupsaltogether. As an alternative, sherecommends sitting downwith friendsand enjoying a leisurely coffee served ina china cup, or buying a reusabletakeaway cup.Dr SharonMcIver of OurDailyWaste,

a Christchurch recycling andwasteprevention consultancy, says the singleuse takeaway cups look likeminirubbish bins and because of this peoplestuff themwith apple cores, cigarettebutts, piewrappers etc.‘‘So that when they get thrown in the

recycling bin they’re already full ofcontaminants. Also, it’s amazing thedamage half a left over latte or hotchocolate can do to a bin full of cleanrecycling,’’ she says.Although singleuse takeaway cups

‘‘only became popular inNewZealandin the last 20 years they are now one ofour biggest waste items.’’

Response welcomed

Restrictions . . . Someschemes are on restrictionsas North Canterbury beginsto dry out. FILE PHOTO.

Ahuge response fromAmberleyresidents to water restrictions hasboosted the town’s reservoirs.Restrictionswere imposed after the

reservoirs came dangerously close toemptying on a couple ofoccasions.Hurunui District

Council operationsengineer, utilities,AndrewMercer says the‘‘positive’’ response to thelevel two restrictionswasreally appreciated, especially with the firerisk in the area.‘‘If the brigade needs to

crack open a hydrant tofight a fire therewill bewater there,’’ he says.‘‘Whenwe look at the

data the impact onwaterconsumption in aweekhas beenmassive and verypositive,’’ saysMrMercer. While conditions are

extremely dry throughoutNorth Canterbury,Amberley’s water woes are not due to alack of water butmore to dowith‘‘infrastructure constraints’’, he says. The growth in Amberley in recent

years has put huge pressure on theexisting infrastructure but once thescheme is connected to the LeithfieldBeach bore it will help alleviateAmberleywater problems, saysMrMercer. It is hoped stages one and two of the

upgrade could be up and runningmidyear. The level two restrictions are also in

place for consumers on the AshleyScheme (part of which is in theHurunuiDistrict) and inWaipara andmeansprinklers and irrigation systems are

prohibited as is washing cars and fillingpools.Watering gardens is allowed butonly with hand held hoses, buckets orwatering cans.MrMercer says both these schemes

have resource consentsconditionswhich requirethe council to act whenriver levels hit a triggerpoint.TheHanmer Springs

reservoirs were also introuble, but a call toconserve saw themnearlyback to capacity onMonday.Meanwhile flows in

both theWaiau andHurunuiRivers remainwell above the triggerlevel.‘‘There is a fair amount

of room in bothsituations,’’ saysMrMercer.Level Onewater

restrictions are in placeover the rest of the district

with residents and visitors urged toconservewater.‘‘We really appreciate people taking

note of the need to conservewater,’’saysMrMercer.Waimakariri residents are also being

called on to conservewater withpressuremounting on theWoodend,Cust andOxford urban supplies.Until dry conditions ease residents

are being urged tominimise usage ofwater for gardens and lawns.‘‘This will help to avoidmandatory

water restrictions,’’ the council says.A leaflet containing further advice and

water saving ideas can be picked up atany of the three service centres atRangiora, Kaiapoi or Oxford.

Leaders neededKaikoura St John’s youthdivision urgently needsleaders. If leaders are not found by

the time school starts nextmonth, the group of about 15young peoplemay have to gointo recess.Work commitmentsmean

present leader Lisa Bond isunable to fully commit to therole, while her assistantleader from last year, KateSummerton, hasmoved toChristchurch to attendteachers college. She says it isa voluntary position, but ‘‘it’spretty rewarding and the kidsdoing it really enjoy it’’.‘‘We need someone to take

overmy role. It’s about lookingafter the cadets. It’s likeScouts or Girl Guides thecadets are children fromages8 to 17 and they learn aboutservice and do badgeworkwith a first aid focus,’’ Lisasays.

While the group has beenmeeting onMonday eveningsfrom 4pm to 5.30pm, she saysthe evening and timing isflexible.‘‘The hour and a half gives

us time to do badgework, drills andmarching, which theyoung people really enjoydoing.’’Lisa has led the youth

division for seven years, butherwork commitments ashead ofmarketing forWhaleWatchmeans shewill be out oftown regularly during theyear. She says shewill aroundto support a new leader ingetting started nextmonth, butwill be away formost ofMarch.‘‘The area committee is very

supportive and St John canhelp cover the costs ofattending training. It is a goodopportunity for someone togive back into thecommunity.’’

Summer dry stressRuralWomenNewZealand isconcerned for thementalwellbeingof farmers as they strugglewith thedry summer.‘‘However, theoverriding

concern forRuralWomen iswomen, whoareoftenat thesharpendwhenmental illnessstrikes,’’ sayspresidentWendyMcGowan.‘‘While theyare seenas

carers andnurturers theyarenot immune to stress anddepression, but aremost likelytoput their ownmental

wellbeingonholdand ‘keepcalmandcarry on’.’’She says it iswell recognised

that family violence spikes afteranadverseeventwith increasedreports continuing forup to twoyears following theevent.Ruralwomenareespecially

vulnerable, given theirdistancefromneighbours, health care, child care, family, friendsandservices. The insidiousness of adry summerwhen there is noend in sight further compoundstheproblem.

Entries up for ewe fairBy AMANDA BOWES

Hotwork . . . An auctioneer at the 2014Hawarden Ewe Fair urges on buyers.

PHOTO: AMANDA BOWES

While ewe numbers are up by 4000 atthe 2015 Hawarden Ewe Fair, dryconditions are not a factor, says RuralLivestock agent Kevin Rowe.A total of 24,000 ewes will go under

the hammer at the two day sale, with12,000 strong wool ewes expected onJanuary 27 and 12,000 fine wool onJanuary 30.After the last ewe has been sold, there

will be a ram sale.‘‘The dry is not an issue,’’says Kevin.‘‘We are just having a typical

Canterbury summer like we used tohave four or five years ago.’’He thinks themedia are over reacting

a bit to the summer dry and saysconditions are not really at a pointwhere it could be described as adrought.Unlike last year where several

farmers were selling capital stock dueto either a change in farming practiceor as the result of selling theirproperties, the sale this year will bemore typical with annual draft ewesbeing presented and excess youngerewes.Traditionally the Hawarden Ewe Fair

experiences hot temperatures andwhile last year the summer had beenrelatively cool, this year stock andpeople have becomemore hardened tothe high temperatures which haveprevailed.Whether buying, selling or just

perusing, the ewe fair provides greatentertainment as the auctioneers worktheir magic on the buyers of thethousands of sheep at a pace that cansometimes be hard to keep up with. For a country that has seen sheep

farms decline with the increase indairy, the Hawarden Ewe Fair is

probably one of the country’s few iconicsales to still take place and it remainsthe largest in Canterbury.Sheep are expected from far and

wide, says Kevin, with the bulk fromNorth Canterbury andMarlborough andas usual buyers can expect some qualitylines up for grabs. Both sales start at 11am at the

Hawarden Sale Yards, which will giveprospective buyers plenty of time tolook over what is on offer this year.

Support for elected regional council

LyndaMurchison. Reuben Hunt.

Farmers andenvironmentalistssupport a return to ademocraticallyelectedEnvironmentCanterbury (ECan).FederatedFarmersNorth

Canterbury president LyndaMurchison, ofWaipara, and lastyear’sGreenPartyWaimakariricandidateReubenHunt, ofOxford, both believe restoringelected councillors is a priority intheGovernment’sECan review.EnvironmentMinisterDrNick

Smith andAssociateLocalGovernmentMinisterLouiseUpston announced inDecembertheGovernment’s intention forpublic discussion on the future ofECan to beheld this year, withthe intention of having anewstructure inplace in time for the2016 local body elections.WhileFederatedFarmers does

not have anofficial policyposition on the future ofECan,MrsMurchison says she believesrestoring democracy is a priority.‘‘I think everyonewould like it

returned to democracy. It’s theold philosophy of no taxationwithout representation, but therearedifferent views ofwhat sort of

transition should takeplace.‘‘Most people appreciate the

commissioners have tried to linkwith the community, but they arenot elected by the community.‘‘I think there’s been somevery

good stuffwhichhas comeoutover the lastweewhile, butweshould also acknowledgeECandid somegood stuff before thecommissioners [wereappointed].’’She says there is some support

among farmers for amix ofelected councillors and ‘‘with

someappointed for theirexpertise’’.MrsMurchison saysECanhas

improved its consent applicationprocess, whichwas cited by theGovernment as one of the reasonsfor sacking the electedcouncillors inMay 2010, and shewould like to seeECan‘‘continuing toworkwith peoplerather than against them’’.BothMrsMurchison andMr

Hunt oppose amalgamation andthe establishment of a unitaryauthority.

‘‘Canterbury always has anissuewhichAucklanddoesn’thave in thatwehave a large ruralarea anddiverse communities,’’MrsMurchison says.‘‘A unitary authoritywithin

Christchurch citymightwork, butwhat about the rest ofCanterbury? Separate unitaryauthorities acrossCanterburysimplywouldn’twork as thoseareas are too big geographicallyand too sparsely populated.’’MrHunt says theAuckland

SuperCitymodel is ‘‘stillunproven’’.‘‘While people saywewould

learn from theirmistakes, it’sabout central government andcommercial interestswantingmore control it’smucheasier tocontrol one council, than 10Mayors and 10 councils.’’He says decisions around

earthquake recovery, waterquality andpublic transport aretoo important to be left tounelected officials. However, heis not opposed to amix of electedandappointed councillors, ‘‘but Iwouldhave to see themodelfirst’’.

‘‘Wehave ahigh level ofirrigation because of dairying andit’s affecting ecosystems andpeople using rivers and lakes forrecreational use.‘‘I believe dairy is going to burst

it’s bubble, andwhen you get asummer like this and it doesn’tmatter howmuchwater storageyou’ve got, you’re going to have tokill someof those cowsbecauseyou can’t produce enough feed.’’He saysCanterbury needs to

move to an agricultural system‘‘whichputs less pressure on theenvironment andprotects ourPureNZbrand.’’MrHunt favours a light rail

system to link theWaimakaririandSelwyndistrictswithChristchurch, supported by a busnetwork.‘‘The cost of light rail is

relatively cheap compared to thecost of building anewmotorway.‘‘However, it will require a

change ofmindset. People likethe convenience of being able toget around in their cars. But ifweare going to seriously addressclimate changeweneed tomakesome toughdecisions.’’

Methane eating microbes

Dr Sally Price.

ALincolnUniversity scientist is thinkingsmall to help solve a big problem climate change.Dr Sally Price, a senior researcher in

the faculty of agriculture and lifesciences, is looking to raise funds so shecan develop a set of guidelines forfarmers to encourage the growth ofnaturally occurringmethaneconsumingsoilmicrobes, calledmethanotrophs.Methane is expelled by cows and other

ruminant livestock through flatulence, and is a potent greenhouse gaswhichcontributes to climate change. She has been doing research over the

last 15 years into the role themicrobesplay, and has found the root systems oftrees and shrubs help to break up the soiland allow themethane to travel down tothemicrobes.Minimising compaction of the soil and

incorporating organic residues can alsomake a difference to themicrobialcommunities and increasemethaneconsumption.‘‘The good news is thatmost soils can

act as ‘sinks’ formethane but the abilityto do this ranges from 5 to 15 per cent oftheir potential in dairy, ungrazedpasture, sheep pasture, and croppingsoils, to between 30% and 50% inshrubland and pine forest,’’ Dr Pricesays. She says theworking of the animal’s

digestive processes is not well enoughunderstood to stopmethane productionso the focus has to be on othermeasures.Climate change is a reality and the

guidelineswill help farmers do their bit,but also has benefits for them aswell.‘‘Many factors influence the

effectiveness of soil methane bacteria, with the soil water content, aeration anddisturbance being the greatestvariables.’’She says these factors are also vital to

themaintenance of soil health, sofollowing the guidelines in order toencouragemicrobe growth andmethane

consumptionwill lead to better soil.Themeasures can include putting land

aside for planting trees and shrubswithout putting animals on it.Soilmethane uptake rates have shown

signs of improvement about 10 yearsafter the introduction of shrubland intounimproved pasture.Afforestationwith quickgrowing pine

trees has shown substantialmethanotrophic activity can be restoredin about 30 years. In the future it can be regulated for as

part of efforts tomeet targets to reducegreenhouse gas emissions, Dr Price says, but for now it can justmean amindshiftfor farmers.‘‘It is important that landmanagers

become aware of how to enhance thisnatural yet important process to aidreductions in anthropogenic (humancaused)methane emissions. It all helps,’’Dr Price says.Farmers today have to know a lot about

science in their role but now they alsoneed to take on boardwhat is happeningon themicroscopic scale as well.‘‘They (themicrobes) are actually

driving the farm,’’ Dr Price says.
