thought he could reach Sipangu(Japan) by going West, He had missed calculated the size of the Earth by 1,000 miles

• Turned down by Italian royalty, he went to newly created Spain and sought help from king and queen, turned down, said Isabella sold her jewels to finance the trip

• Isabella from Castille and Ferdinand from Aragon, joined kingdoms as teen agers, drove Muslims out of Spain and out of Europe, considered themselves protectors of Catholic faith, Even started Spanish inquisition

• Sailed in 1492 with 3 ships, Nina, Pina, Santa Maria

• Very well documented, set sail in August and reached Bahamas on Oct. 11, 1492

Columbus 2• Columbus encountered friendly and hostile

natives• Established capital on Hispaniola (Haiti and

Dominican Republic) built fort called Navidad, returned to Spain with three ships full of gold, by chance they came in together

• Made three more journeys , total of four, made brother governor of Hispaniola, and Juan Ponce De Leon governor of Puerto Rico

• He continued exploring West and South, found South America on 3rd voyage and was ship wrecked in Panama on 4th

• Given title Admiral of the seas by king, yet was captured by slave hunters and returned to Spain in chains, died broke, divorced and alone

• Buried in a paupers field originally, then move to a cathedral

• Columbian exchange, Columbia and credit is given to him for finding the New World
