Opening Doors To A World of Information & Opportunity A Message from our President, Chris Selin A BANNER YEAR! A s we approach the end of 2017, The Foundation wishes to thank all of our supporters, who believe, as we do, the words of Henry Ward Beecher, “A Library is not a luxury but one of the necessities of life.” This summer I had the privilege of officially presenting a check for $100,000 from the Foundation to our beloved Library. Your generous donations, together with the proceeds from the Appleyard Endowment Fund, allowed us to make this substantial grant this year. Our Spring Match Campaign was also highly successful and gave us a strong close to our fiscal year. Today’s Foundation is not only an advocate and fundraiser for the Library but we also host the successful Cocktails & Conversation series moderated by Dr. Amy Bass, Professor of History at the College of New Rochelle, and the Law At The Library series, cosponsored with the New Rochelle Bar Association. Each year Tom Geoffino, Director of the Library, and his staff come to the Foundation with a ‘wish list.’ On Tom’s list are items that the Library desperately needs but has no public funding to support. This is where the Foundation steps in. Every year, guided by our mission to keep our library vibrant, up-to-date and able to meet the diverse needs of the New Rochelle community, we try to fund as many of the projects on the Library’s list as possible. In the pages that follow, we are pleased to present our first Annual Report recognizing our dedicated supporters and listing the grants you have helped us fund during our 2016-2017 fiscal year. A BANNER YEAR!

As we approach the end of 2017, The Foundation wishes to thank all of our supporters, who believe, as we do, the words of Henry Ward Beecher, “A Library is not a luxury but one of the necessities of life.”

This summer I had the privilege of officially presenting a check for $100,000 from the Foundation to our beloved Library.

I hope to see you all at the Library.

William R. Handelman Founding Board Member and Past President

Bill has been a member of the Foundation since it began almost 25 years ago. The Foundation was established in 1993 and according to Bill, “The Library was then funded under the city budget and its financing was uncertain from year to year. At that time, I was serving on the Library Board, and the Library Director and I discussed setting up a charitable foundation to help support the Library. I’ve been a dedicated member ever since.”

Bill has deep ties to the community. He graduated from New Rochelle High School, went to Yale and later returned to New Rochelle with his late wife, Helene, to raise their children. In 2002, thanks to the generosity of Bill, Helene, and others in the Handelman family, the Handelman Business Opportunity Center was established. Since that time, thousands of community members have benefitted from the free one-on-one professional job counseling and assistance in receiving high school equivalency diplomas paired with access to computers, printers and WiFi. According to Bill, “We are doing more today than ever. Our current leadership and dedicated board members raise our goals every year, and I am really pleased to be a part of it all.”
