Overview
Pup This is a practical driving test to determine the ability o aspirant motor vehicle drivers and
motorcycle riders.
The driving test measures a drivers profciency regarding: the handling o a vehicle; obedience to trafc
rules, road signs, trafc signals and surace markings; correct application o the K53 deensive driving
system through all aspects o the test; and coping with trafc problems in practical driving situations.
You may not do the driving test in a light motor vehicle that is less than 3 m in length.
During the test, smoking and the use o cellular phones are not allowed.
Light and heavy motor vehicLes and motorcycLes
8 A pre-trip inspection o the vehicles
roadworthiness.
8 A yard test o your basic manoeuvring skills,
away rom trafc:
starting the engine;
moving o;
turning around in the road: three-point-
turn (light vehicles only);
alley docking: reversing into an alley, and
driving out again;
parallel parking (light vehicles only);
stopping and moving o on an incline;
let turn (light vehicles i towing a trailer,
and heavy vehicles); and
reversing in a straight line (light vehicles i
towing a trailer, and heavy vehicles).
8 A road test conducted on public roads carrying
trafc, including the ollowing where available:
obeying trafc signals;
changing lanes;
overtaking;
speed control;
turning let and right at intersections;
proceeding through an intersection;
uncontrolled intersections;
obeying Yield signs and trafc lights;
stopping in trafc;

OVERVIEW
8 A pre-trip inspection o the motorcycles
roadworthiness.
8 Mounting and dismounting the motorcycle
correctly.
8 Manoeuvres part one: starting and stopping the engine;
speed management and control;
moving o and turning let;
lane changing; and
stopping and moving o on an incline.
8 Manoeuvres part two:
moving o and riding;
turning speed judgement; emergency stop and emergency swerve;
and stopping.
t l f pl ml: No time limit
L l : 20 minutes (plus 59 seconds grace period) including the
pre-trip vehicle inspection. I you pass the yard test you will continue with the road test which will takebetween 20 and 45 minutes.
You will ail the yard test and the test will be discontinued i:
8 you exceed the time limit o 20 minutes and 59 seconds or the pre-trip inspections and the yard test
manoeuvres;
8 you have been allocated more than 50 penalty points (see next topic Scoring method); or
8 you ail any one o the immediate ail items in any manoeuvre (see next topic Scoring method).
The stopwatch will be stopped ater completion o each o the ollowing, and re-started beore the
next item:
8 the instructions or the pre-trip inspections;
8 each yard test manoeuvre; and
8 the road test.
s The examiner will use a score sheet to evaluate your perormance during the test. You may accumulate
a certain number o penalty points during each part o the test (see next page). I you score more than
this allowance you will ail the test.
Besides the penalty points applicable to specifc manoeuvres and road test situations, throughout the
test you will also be allocated penalty points each time you make the ollowing errors:
8 not showing courtesy towards other road users: 1
8 not checking in the mirrors every 5 to 8 seconds: 5
8 looking in the mirrors or too long: 1
Some items do not carry penalty points and must be completed correctly in order to continue with the
rest o the test. I you are unsuccessul in any o these immediate ailure items, the test will be stopped
immediately and you will have to reapply to do the test some other time.

i flu You will ail the test and it will be stopped immediately i you make any o the ollowing errors:
L l : ml :
8 use a vehicle that is unroadworthy or not
licenced;8 have a mechanical ailure o the vehicle;
8 violate any trafc law, road sign, signal or
road marking;
8 make an uncontrolled or dangerous action;
8 be involved in a collision you could have
avoided;
8 bump any obstacles, mount a kerb or touch
a boundary line;
8 ail to complete a manoeuvre within the
allotted number o attempts;
8 allow the vehicle to roll orward or backwards;
8 ail to demonstrate that you can give a hand
signal correctly when instructed to do so;
8 exceed the 20-minute time limit or the yard test;
8 exceed 50 penalty points or the yard test; or
8 exceed 8 penalty points per minute during the
road test.
8 use a vehicle that is unroadworthy or not

marking;
8 make an uncontrolled or dangerous action;
8 ail to wear a suitable saety helmet;
8 touch any boundary line;
8 exceed 50 penalty points or Part One o the

8 dont succeed with one attempt:
moving o;
turning let;
lane change to the right; or
8 dont succeed within three attempts:
moving o and riding;
turning speed judgement;
emergency stop and emergency swerve; or
stopping.
Pl p ll:
With each yard test manoeuvre weve
included a table that shows the number o
penalty points that can be allocated or any
errors in executing the various elements in
that manoeuvre, e.g. parallel parking, incline
start, alley docking.
Penalty points are given or any action that:
8 you do, but which should not be done,
e.g. needless stopping;
8 you should do but ail to do, e.g. signal intention; or
8 you dont do correctly, e.g. position the vehicle or turning.
For example, i you orget to do a 360 observation during a particular manoeuvre which requires that
action, you will be penalized 5 points. Similarly, i you do not signal your intention when it is needed,
that can cost you 5 points. The higher the number o penalty points allocated to an action, the more
important it is or you to do it correctly.
A shaded box indicates an element you must do correctly or you will ail the entire test immediately.
n: For the road test, where a manoeuvre applies in several situations, the penalty points have not
been shown every time. For example, the K53 action steps or stopping or or moving o must be
applied every time these orm part o a driving manoeuvre, such as at intersections.

USE OF THE VEHICLE CONTROLS
Signalling8 Check in the rear-view mirror(s) and appropriate blind spot, i applicable, e.g. when intending to slow
down, stop, turn, or change lanes.
8 Signal in good time and or sufcient duration to warn other road users, but take care not to signal too
early where this could create conusion or other road users.
8 Ater starting the signal, or using hand signals, replace your hand in the appropriate position on the steering.
8 Ensure that the signal is cancelled immediately ater completing a manoeuvre.
8 When using the horn, make sure that the other road user is aware o your presence.
8 Avoid using direction indicators or hand signals within an intersection, unless necessary.
8 Stop lights are regarded as a signal that can be
kept on, so it is not necessary to cancel these (by
removing your oot rom the brake pedal) ater the
vehicle has been brought to a complete standstill.
8 When the stop lights, headlights or horn are
used as a signal, you do not need to check the
blind spots. However, you must check in the
rear-view mirror(s) beore braking commences.
Use o the mirrors8 Adjust the rear-view mirror(s) or maximum rear-view vision only while the vehicle is stationary.
8 Check in the rear-view mirror(s) as you approach any potential hazard.
8 Check in the rear-view mirror(s) every 5 to 8 seconds.
8 Check in the rear-view mirror(s) or sufcient duration to determine the trafc situation behind you,
but do not look in the mirror(s) or too long, as you need to watch the road ahead.
8 In the case o an enclosed cabin, check both the exterior rear-view mirrors.
8 You will not be penalized i you make only a quick, minor adjustment to the rear-view mirror while the
vehicle is moving, or i you adjust the mirror(s) when the vehicle is stationary.
8 I you adjust the mirrors while the vehicle is moving (other than a quick, minor adjustment), you will
receive penalty points.
8 When you look or too long in the rear-view mirrors while moving, you will be penalized or poor
observation while steering.
8 You are not required to use the exterior mirrors or observation to the rear.
8 In the test you must use the exterior mirrors i the vehicle is not ftted with an interior rear-view mirror,
or i the interior rear-view mirror or some reason does not allow enough vision.
Defnition o Observe:
In this test the word OBSERVE means to look in all directions (360) or hazards and potential hazards.
