A British couple said they decidedto give their baby the same name as theunusual place of her birth — Kia.

Tony Richardson, 24, andSamantha Smyth, 23, said they namedbaby Kia after the seven-seat KiaCarens that served as the birthingroom when they arrived at a Poole,England, hospital moments too late, the Bournemouth Daily Echo reportedon Thursday.

The Parkside, England, couple saidthey had originally planned to nametheir baby “Tilly,” but changed theirminds after the unusual birth.

Two paleontologists said at least onespecies of crocodiles that existed nearly100 million years ago in Africa actuallyfed on dinosaurs.

University of Chicago paleontologistPaul Sereno and Hans Larsson of Cana-da’s McGill University said a 20-foot-long, saber-toothed crocodile dubbed theBoarCroc actually included dinosaurs in

its diet, USA Today reported on Thurs-day.

The findings of Sereno and Larssonappear in the online journal ZooKeysand will be featured in a November is-sue of National Geographic magazineand a National Geographic Channelshow titled “When Crocs Ate Dino-saur.”

“Africa really was a world of dino-saurs and crocodiles then,” Soreno saidof the five prehistoric crocodiles he andLarsson studied.

In addition to the BoarCroc, the re-port details how the so-called RatCrocwas a 3-foot-long crocodile that only ateplants and lived in Morocco. The gal-loping DogCroc also fed on plants.

The paleontologists said the 20-foot-long PancakeCroc that lived in Nigerand Morocco ate fish just like the3-foot-long DuckCroc, USA Today re-ported.

More From LessArticle & Photos: Zaw

(from page 16)are, you first need toknow nature of a fire.Fire needs fuel, oxygenand heat to blaze. If oneof these three can be ex-tinguished or reduced, fire can be put out surely. With Water Mist Tech-nology, water is split intocertain size and when itis splashed over theblaze, the mist becomesvapour because of heatand covers the blaze. Thevapour increases in size

Demonstration of putting out fire burnt in 4'x4' sized petrol storagetank with AFT Cheetah fire engine within 15 seconds.

Light vehicles installed with AFT Cheetah firefighting equipmentused as fire engine.

with home-made LightTruck as fire engine iscompared, it can be foundthat the latter is less costlyand more effective. But,anyway AFT equipmentare more suitable for de-partmental organizations, factories and manufactur-ing plants rather thanhomes and shops.”

It is sure that AFTfirefighting equipment in-vented through advancedtechnology are useful andeffective and are widelyused in global countries.AFT equipment are use-ful for Myanmar as there

1640 folds. The vapourcovers the blaze so thatthe outer wind cannot en-ter, and fire finally stopsburning due to lack ofoxygen."

He added, "An-other factor is that due toAFT, jets of mist arecold, being kept underhigh pressure and thusreduces the heat. Due tothese two factors, firecan be extinguished withsmall amount of waterin no time. Rocket Tech-nology is based on firingof rockets and is de-signed to reach and ex-tinguish the blaze withgreat speed. Sometimes, because of blazingflame, it is difficult toget close and put out thefire. On such occasion,it needs to direct waterat fire from a distance.Water pumped out of 9-litre haversack AFTfirefighting gun reachesas far as 17 metres or 56

feet." Looking at the hav-ersack fire extinguisherdisplayed beside me, Iasked in doubt, "With justthis small haversack, re-ally? It hasn't got any ma-chine." He replied, “Wedemonstrated in Manda-lay and Monywa last 15May. It just took about 20seconds to put out the firethat was set to six barrelswith two gallons of petrolin each with just one AFThaversack fire extin-guisher. The fire com-

pletely died out. The dem-onstrator just wore ordi-nary clothes. If you don’tbelieve, I have a recordCD. You can watch it,” UNay Myo Aung said withconfidence, handing CDto me.

The power of tech-nology is amazing. Thereare many multi-func-tional devices despitetheir tiny sizes. Continu-ous improvement leadsthings to be easier to beused, to be more conven-ient to carry, and trans-formed from big ones intosmaller ones. Then Iasked the size, type, us-age of AFT firefightingequipment and currentuse in our country.

Member of the Boardof Directors U Zaw Weikexplained in detail,“There are four types ofAFT equipment, Hand-held Type, HaversackType, Trolley Type, andMotor Propelled Modu-

lar (MPM) Type. We haveall these four types. Hand-held Type can hold 6 li-tres of water and is suit-able for restaurant andhome use. HaversackType can hold 9 litre andis used in fire brigades, airports, and petrol sta-tions. This type is fairlyuseful and used mostly. In most countries, teamsof fire fighter motorcy-clists are founded and theteams reach the scenequickly as soon as fire

breaks out and try to keepthe fire under control.Sometimes, fire breaksout in skyscrapers, tun-nels, and burns with asmouldering intensity inpipelines and ceilings offactories and workshopsthat fire hoses can hardlyreach. The equipment arefairly useful on such oc-casion in which ordinaryfire engines are almostuseless. Trolley Type canbe used for long as it canhold 35 litres and 50 li-tres and is easy to move.MPM Type is small-sizedfire engines that can beused with vehicles likePick-Up and Light Truck. If there is no access tothis kind of vehicles, trail-ers like tractors can alsobe used instead. In spiteof the small size, the per-formance of MPM Typeis relatively high. It islearnt that performance ofa 600-gallon-capacityMPM Type firefighting

equipment is equal to a8000-gallon-capacity fireengine.

Concerning currentuse of AFT equipment inMyanmar, he said, “Peo-ple didn't use it when firstimported as they didn'tknow much about theequipment. The productcame into use last year.Fire Brigades of Manda-lay and Sagaing Divisionshave been equipped withAFT equipment with theassistance of the DivisionPeace and DevelopmentCouncils. It is learnt thatAFT equipment was usedin two of last year’s fireoutbreaks in Mandalayand it was said to be ef-fective. A department hasbought MPM Typefirefighting equipmentand transforming theminto fire engines that canbe used in near future.Entrepreneurs also showinterest in it."

When I inquired theprice, U Zaw Weik said,“It can be said that theprice is reasonable givenits capacity and perform-ance. AFT equipment ap-peared to be rather expen-sive in comparison withother firefighting equip-ment. But, price, durabil-ity and practical effective-ness should be taken intoconsideration. For exam-ple, if cost of a fire engineand of using MPM Typefirefighting equipment

is high rate of fire out-breaks. I wish my birth-place, the dry regionwhere water is scarce, have AFT equipment. There are so many left tolearn and write aboutAFT. I think readers arealso like me. I would liketo inform the public, forfurther details, pleasecontact OK MyanmarCo., Ltd at No. (G/9) inMGW Tower on BoAung Kyaw Street, Ph:01-392986 and 392987.

WASHINGTON, 21 Nov— A new toolinvolving DNA barcoding showed en-dangered bluefin tuna was served in su-shi bars sampled in New York and Colo-rado, scientists said.

The bluefin was identified through ahand-held genetics tool that assigned abarcode to various species of tuna inmuch the same way that barcodes iden-tify products in stores.

The barcodes were assigned after aDNA sample was taken from each spe-cies of tuna and other endangered fish, the Sackler Institute for ComparativeGenomics in Washington said in a re-lease.

It may not be long before wildlifemanagement teams could “seamlesslyand efficiently identify a species andmaybe the geographic origin of specificsamples,” George Amato, the institute’s

director said. In restaurants sampled re-cently in New York and Colorado, thedevice showed 25 percent of what waslabeled as tuna on sushi menus wasbluefin, Amato said. The device also hasbeen used to identify the presence ofendangered whales in Asian markets andfraud in the labeling of caviar and redsnapper.—Internet

BALTIMORE, 21 Nov —Maternal depression mayaggravate a child’s asthmabut how often a child hadsymptoms did not seem toaffect the mother’s symp-toms, US resear-cherssaid.

Researchers at JohnsHopkins Children’s Centerin Baltimore analyzed datafrom interviews with 262mothers of African-American children withasthma — a populationdisproportionately af-fected by the inflammatoryairway disorder.

The study, in the Jour-nal of Pediatric Psychol-ogy, found children whose

mothers had more depres-sive symptoms had morefrequent asthma symp-toms during the six-month study. Conversely, children whose mothersreported fewer depressivesym-ptoms had less fre-quent asthma symptoms.

Senior investigatorKristin Riekert, a pediatricpsychologist and co-direc-tor of the Johns HopkinsAdherence ResearchCenter, and colleaguestracked ups and downs inmaternal depression as re-lated to the frequency ofsymptoms among chil-dren.

“Even though our re-

search was not set up tomeasure just how much amom’s depression in-creased the frequency ofher child’s symptoms, aclear pattern emerged inwhich the latter followedthe earlier,” Riekert saidin astatement.“Intuitively, itmay seem that we’re deal-ing with a chicken-eggsituation, but our studysuggests otherwise. Thefact that mom’s depres-sion was not affected byhow often her child hadsymptoms really caughtus off guard, but it alsosuggested which factorcomes first.”—Internet

LONDON, 21 Nov—British and Norwegian re-searchers said depressionis as big of a mortality riskfactor as smoking.

However, the studyfound, unlike depressionalone, a combination ofdepression and anxietylowers mortality.

“One of the main mes-sages from this research isthat ‘a little anxiety may begood for you,’” Dr. RobertStewart of Kings CollegeLondon said in a state-ment.

Possible reasons maythat be those with anxiety

may be more willing toask for help and doctorsmay be more likely to in-vestigate further to calmanxieties, the researcherssaid. The researcherstracked 60,000 people forfour years. The mortalityrisk was increased in asimilar extent in peoplewho were depressed as inpeople who were smok-ers.

“It appears that we’retalking about two riskgroups here. People withvery high levels of anxietysymptoms may be natu-rally more vulnerable due

to stress, for examplethrough the effects stresshas on cardiovascular out-comes,” Stewart said.

“On the other hand, people who score very lowon anxiety measures, i.e.those who deny any symp-toms at all, may be peoplewho also tend not to seekhelp for physical condi-tions, or they may be peo-ple who tend to take risks. This would explain thehigher mortality.”

The findings are pub-lished in the British Jour-nal of Psychiatry.
