The opening ceremony of Shweli (1)Hydropower Plant situated near Mantat Village,17 miles to the southwest of Namkham, ShanState (North), took place on 16 May with anaddress by Prime Minister General Thein Sein.

From 1988 to date, besides regionalhydro-power plants, a total of 13 hydropowerplants covering the power grids of the wholenation have been built. And there are 35 ongoinghydropower projects.

Out of the three large-scale hydropowerprojects to be implemented along the ShweliRiver, the Shweli (1) project is the very first onethat has been completed under the cooperationbetween Myanmar and the People’s Republic ofChina. This project reflects not only friendshipbut also mutual cooperation between the twonations.

At present, Shweli (1) Hydropower Plantwith 600 megawatts of generating capacity is thelargest power station in Myanmar. Up to date, allthe hydropower plants across the nation cangenerate more than 1,400 megawatts of electricityand 35 ongoing projects will generate over 32,900megawatts.

Generating capacity of the power plantsaround the nation now accounts for only overthree percent of that of the whole nation. Oncompletion of the ongoing projects, Myanmar, innot-too-distant future, will be the nation that willbe able to not only fulfil domestic electricityneeds but also sell power surpluses to foreigncountries.

As the government is striving to satisfythe nation’s increasing demand of electricity, thepeople on their part are to help develop thenational economy by improving their ownbusinesses realizing the goodwill effort of thegovernment.

With the government, the people and theTatmadaw working harmoniously fordevelopment of all regions of the Union, thenation will surely be able to achieve its desiredgoal.

KABUL, 17 May – Four US private security guards are being held againsttheir will in Afghanistan by the company formerly known as Blackwaterafter their involvement in a deadly shooting, their lawyer said on Saturday.

A spokeswoman for the company denied the allegation. The shooting and allegations of forced confinement by the contractors’

lawyer highlights the murky legal world in which private security compa-nies operate in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

Blackwater was involved in a 2007 shooting in a busy square in Bagh-dad, Iraq, that left as many as 17 Iraqi civilians dead and led to the end of itsBaghdad operations this month. It has since changed its name to Xe.

An Afghan died and two others were wounded in the May 5 incident inthe capital Kabul, said Lt. Col. Chris Kubik, a U.S. military spokesman.

The family of the dead Afghan man said he and the two others wereinnocent civilians driving home after work. The lawyer for the suspects saidthey were insurgents trying to kill his clients.—Internet

“I don’t know,” the boy replied. Butafter a short silence other children in theclassroom answered for him: “TheTaleban.”

Within minutes the discussion waspunctuated by an insurgent ambush andthe joint US-Afghan patrol becamepinned down in this area with forestedmountains, caves and ravines thatAmerican soldiers call “the Valley ofDeath.”

Heavy machine gun fire blanketedthe patrol as troops used smoke gre-nades and cover fire to escape theambush. No one in the patrol was killedin the firefight Saturday.

The Korengal Valley in eastern Af-ghanistan’s Kunar Province has a repu-tation as one of most dangerous areasin the country, where its rugged moun-tainous terrain makes it a perfect insur-gent playground.

JERUSALEM, 17 May—On the eve of PrimeMinister Benjamin Ne-tanyahu’s crucial visit toWashington, his defenceminister suggested Satur-day the Israeli leader mightendorse a Palestinian statewhen he meets with Presi-dent Barack Obama.

That would be a signifi-cant shift for Netanyahu, who has made clear in thepast that he does not thinkthe Palestinians are ready

to rule themselves. Butthat position has put himat odds with long-stand-ing US policy that sup-ports Palestinian state-hood as the cornerstone ofMideast peace efforts.

Senior White Houseofficials said Obama’smeeting with NetanyahuMonday is “part of hiscommitment that he’smade since day one of theadministration to pursuecomprehensive peace in

the Middle East, includ-ing a two-state solutionbetween Israel and thePalestinians.”

WASHINGTON, 17 May—President BarackObama says he needs tosee how fast Afghanistancan be stabilized and ledtoward a more democraticgovernment before decid-ing whether more troopsare needed.

In an interview withNewsweek magazine,Obama said the hardestthing he has had to do sofar in his administrationwas to order 17,000troops to Afghanistan ontop of an estimated 38,000that were already inAfghanistan. The inter-view was released on theWeb Saturday.

He did not rule out thepossibility of sendingeven more troops, whilestressing such a decisionwas premature at thispoint and that US militaryaction is not the only an-

swer to bringing stabilityto the region.

“We have to see ourmilitary action in the con-text of a broader effort tostabilize security in thecountry, allow nationalelections to take place inAfghanistan and then pro-vide the space for the vi-tal development workthat’s needed so that a tol-erant and open, demo-cratically elected govern-ment is considered farmore legitimate than aTaleban alternative,”Obama said.

“My strong view is thatwe are not going to suc-ceed simply by piling onmore and more troops,”he added. “The militarycomponent is critical toaccomplishing that goal, but it is not a sufficientelement by itself.”

Health Tip: Keep medications away from childrenYoungsters seem to get into everything — often things they aren’t supposed

to, such as medications. Your medicine cabinet is full of dangers for young peo-ple, so it’s important to keep medications locked away and out of a child’s reach.

The National Safety Council offers these suggestions:* Keep all medications in a securely latched medicine cabinet, even if you

don’t think your child can reach it.* Always store medications in containers with child-proof lids, and make sure

the containers are securely closed.* Try not to take medication in front of children, and never act like they are

Boosting production of quality farm equipment tochange from conventional to mechanized farming

Article: Win Naing (Kyemon); Photos: Khin Maung Win

Director U SoeHlaing of

AgriculturalMechanization

Department (HeadOffice).

Farmers observe use of agricultural equipment.

Field trip leader Naw Lay Ma Aye.

Farming implements being displayed on board of the trucks.

(from page 1)indicated that it isnecessary to change fromthe manual to themechanized farmingwithout fail.

To contribute to thechanging of agriculturalsystem, the governmentestablished farmequipment factories. No.1 Agricultural EquipmentFactory in 9th Mile ofYangon and theAgricultural EquipmentFactory in Ingon ofKyaukse Township inMandalay Division aremanufacturing farmingimplements.

In the past, the

factories assembled Leyar-16 power-tillers andLeyar-22 power-tillersonly. As part of efforts tochange the farming systemwith momentum, thefactories produce newmachinery items due to thedevelopment of agriculturesector and the higherdemand of farmingequipment.

Recently, the newscrew of Kyemon Daily hadan interview with DirectorU Soe Hlaing ofAgricultural Mechani-zation Department (HeadOffice) to observe theextended production ofmodern agriculturalequipment of thedepartment under theMinistry of Agricultureand Irrigation and theutmost efforts for changingof agricultural system.

The director said, “Inproviding farming

implements for stormNargis-hit regions to be ableto grow monsoon paddy intime, the factories ofAgricultural Mechani-zation Departmentmanufactured new items ofagricultural machinery inaccord with the directivesof the government as thelocal farmers requested thedepartment to produce newsuitable farming machineryin addition to the presentbrands of farming

equipment. In the past, thedepartment assembled twobrands of power-tillersnamely Leyar-16 andLeyar-22. Beginning 2009-2010 financial year, thedepartment ismanufacturing eightfarming implementsnamely one-wheel power-tiller, long handle power-tiller, power-tiller forworking on slopes, paddyharvester, paddy thresher, form vehicles and trailers. Moreover, efforts are beingmade to manufacturesowing machine, paddytransplanting machine, pumps, sprays and combineharvesters.”

Service personnel ofthe department made fieldtrips to the rural areas forrealizing the mechanizedfarming.

To observe theprogress of changing thefarming system, the newscrew went toKwammoedein ModelVillage in Kayan Townshipand had an interview withleader of the field trip teamDeputy Staff Officer NawLay Ma Aye.

She explained,“During the field trips, ourteam demonstrated the useof new farming equipment, collected data, gave of freerepair and maintenanceservices and providedspare parts in the villagesto attract the interest oflocal farmers. We sold theequipment to the farmersthrough cash payment andinstallment systems. Spareparts of machines were alsosold with the one-yearguarantee. Wedemonstrated the use of allmachinery and sought theadvice of the farmers. Forexample, new generation2009 power-tiller is a newproduct by remedy theweak points of Leyar-16and Leyar-22 power-tillersaccording to thesuggestions of the farmers. The field trip team went to5-10 villages in a townshipand sold the farmingequipment afterconducting demonstrationon use of machinery. Weplan to go field trips to allthe townships of YangonSouth District.”

The news team met

with farmer U Aung Kyifrom ShwepaukpinVillage of KayanTownship who wasobserving agriculturalequipment. He said, “I amgrowing crops at 14 acresof farmlands with the useof one Leyar-16 power-tiller. I am interested inpaddy thresher. Beforebuying the power-tiller, Iwas very tired in workingtogether with a couple ofdraught cattle. The use ofmachine saves the farmingcost and time andcontributes to growing ofdouble crops a year. Ifwater is sufficient at anytime, we can cultivate

triple crops the whole year. The power-tiller is multi-purpose in the cultivationtask. The two-hour use ofmachine is equal to oneday’s work with cattle. Ibought the power-tiller six

years ago, and the two-year use of machine hadbeen leveled its value. Theuse of machine contributesto better ploughing andboosting production. Now, I am interested inpaddy thresher and tractor. We take two days inthreshing 20-25 baskets ofpaddy using the animals. The paddy thresher canwork 60 baskets of paddyper hour. We can save thetime. If the farmers canharvest, thresh and storepaddy speedily, they willnot be necessary to worryabout loss and wastage ofpaddy.”

Myanmar has fertile

soil and favourableclimate. In the agriculturesector, the government hasbuilt infrastructures forpractising the mechanizedfarming. We firmlybelieve that the farmerswill have the ability toemploy the mechanizedfarming system bysubstituting theconventional cultivationmethods with the modernones with the aims ofdeveloping the agriculturesector and uplifting theirliving standard.

Immunotherapy worksagainst brain cancer

SAN DIEGO 17 May—Adding an antibody-basedtherapy that harnesses the body’s immune system re-sulted in children living longer with a child cancer,US researchers said.

Lead author Dr Alice Yu of the University of Cali-fornia, San Diego School of Medicine, said neurob-lastoma, a hard-to-treat cancer arising from nervoussystem cells, is responsible for 15 percent of cancer-related deaths in children.

The therapy targets a specific glycan — a complexsugar chain found on the surface of cells — on neu-roblastoma cells called GD2, which inhibit the immunesystem from killing cancer cells. The antibody —ch14.18 — binds to this glycan, enabling various typesof immune cells to attack the cancer.

Yu and colleagues compared both the percentageof patients who were still alive without experiencinga recurrence after two years as well as overall sur-vival in two groups of 113 patients each.—Internet
