People’s Desire

Beautify urban, rural areas

with a sense of dutyKeeping urban and rural areas clean

and beautiful is good for the health of each ofthe citizens. Now, responsible organizationsare beautifying the regions concerned toestablish an environment that possesses allthe characteristics of urban area.

In the process, roads are being upgradedfor smooth transport in commercially busycities with heavy populations. Some roadshave got raised shoulders, and drainage ditchesare being expanded wherever necessary toprevent overflow of drains on both sides ofroads in the rainy season.

Moreover, many projects are in progressfor regional greening, more parks and lakesare being set up to add to the beauty of theenvironment, and new public recreation placesare being established. The plan also coversrenovation of archaeological buildings withoutsacrificing their original styles, and paintingand maintaining them.

Township development affairscommittees are collaborating with thedepartments concerned in making urban areasfree from rubbish, supplying potable water, improving drainage system, and maintainingroads and their platforms. Simultaneously, health staff are organizing local people to keeptheir wards, rural villages, houses, streets, schools and markets clean and implementingdisease control projects.

Therefore, the people on their part areto maintain trees and landscaping plants, andcarry out sanitation work regularly in thesurrounding areas of their houses, streets, schools and markets. And they have to avoidundisciplined acts such as throwing awayrubbish and wasted materials into drains andon roads, throwing garbage from movingvehicles and spitting betel spittle onto roads.

Myanmar will be a clean, beautifulsociety, if the entire people take part with asense of discipline and duty in the tasks forgreening the environment, improving drainagesystem and disease prevention measures.

Cuba says US should liftembargo unconditionally

HAVANA, 17 Sept —Cuba will not make any politicalor policy concessions to improve relations with the US— no matter how small, Foreign Minister BrunoRodriguez said on Wednesday, snubbing Washington’ssuggestions that some reforms could lead to better ties.He told a news conference that the United States mustlift its 47-year-old trade embargo without waiting foranything in return.

Rodriguez said US trade sanctions have cost the is-land $96 billion in economic damage since they took theircurrent form in February 1962 as part of the Trading withthe Enemy Act.“The policy is unilateral and should belifted unilaterally,” Rodriguez said. He called PresidentObama “well-intentioned and intelligent” and said thathis administration has adopted a “modern, less aggres-sive” stance toward the island.

But Rodriguez shrugged off the White House’s Aprildecision to lift restrictions on Cuban-Americans who wantto visit or send money to relatives in this country, sayingthose changes simply undid a tightening of the embargoimposed by President George W Bush.”Obama was apresident elected on a platform of change. No quick decision on troopsto Afghan

WASHINGTON, 17 Sept—President Barack Obama saidon Wednesday there will be no quick decision on whetherto send more US troops into the widening war in Afghani-stan, saying “my determination is to get this right.”

The president’s comments came one day after Adm. MikeMullen, his top military adviser as chairman of the JointChiefs of Staff, endorsed an increase in US forces as likelynecessary to battle a deepening insurgency. The US andNATO commander in Afghanistan, Gen StanleyMcChrystal, also has delivered a grim assessment of thewar and is expected to follow up soon with a request forthousands of additional troops. “I’m going to take a verydeliberate process in making those decisions,” said Obama, taking questions from reporters as he sat in the Oval Officewith visiting Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. “Andso I just want to be absolutely clear, because there’s been alot of discussion in the press about this: There is no immedi-ate decision pending on resources.”—Internet

BEIJING, 17 Sept— Thepublic should be bettereducated on the definitionof brain death in a bid toease the nation’s shortageof organ donors, said ChenZhonghua, a professor atTongji Medical College inWuhan, Hubei Province. The Ministry of Health re-leased guidelines for theclinical procedures andpractice surrounding braindead patients in 2003 butthe public still remainslargely unaware, he said.

As many as 300 peoplewere declared brain deadby medics last year. Onlyorgans from 70 of themwere used to help thoseawaiting transplants, offi-cial statistics show. Minis-try rules define death intwo ways: cardiac death, when the heart stops beat-ing, and brain death, whenthe brain-stem shows noreflexes and the patient hasno ability to breath un-aided.

At the invitation of an institution on interna-tional relations in the People’s Republic of China,I again paid a visit to the Asian giant to read apaper. On my way in Shanghai, a friend from theinstitute took me to East Sea Bridge. The 30-kilometer bridge over the sea is linked with anisland used as a deep-sea port. He said that in itsinfancy, the bridge saw vehicles, mostly smallones; that their visits were just for sightseeing;and that then the facility constantly coped with alarge number of container trucks.

It is a very formidable task to build such a longbridge linked with a deep-sea port. It called forhard work plus high technology in order that thesea bridge would be resistant to tidal waves, strong winds and seawater. Surely, the emergenceof the impressive bridge must be largely due totenacity, perseverance, team spirit and foresightof Shanghai dwellers. In particular, such a giantbridge is the fruit of cohesive, harmonious workof over 20 million Shanghai inhabitants.

Feeling cold in a wild breeze, I happened tothink about ongoing deep-sea port projects offthe coast of our country and visualized the futureof our country to emerge as a land bridge nation. Then, I was full of hope for a prosperous futureof my country.

Being situated between Southeast Asiaand South Asia as well as between China andIndia, Myanmar occupies a strategic positionin terms of geopolitics. So, Myanmar takescare of itself in order that its internal affairswill never have adverse effects not only onitself but also on regional security and stabil-ity. Myanmar is home to over 100 national races,so it gives first priority to consolidated unityamong national brethren in the national interestaccording to the geopolitics. In order to achievethe noble aim, the government focuses on equi-table improvement of the socio-economic life ofall national brethren. As a result, Myanmar en-joys peace and all-round development at theunprecedented level. In order to improve effec-tively the socio-economic life of the entire peo-ple, it is required to combine geo-politics viewsand geo-economics views in a bid to bring wealthto the motherland. What should the people do tomeet the goal?

The strategic location of the nation will soon

To serve as a land bridge

be a good advantage for the people to help gener-ate economic growth of the nation. Myanmar’sneighbouring countries, Southeast Asian and SouthAsian countries are now eager to promote eco-nomic relations among them, using the territory ofthe Union of Myanmar as a land bridge. Land-locked provinces of China and India with remark-able economic development want to use deep-seaports of Myanmar for mutual economic benefits. So, there have emerged Kyaukpyu Deep-sea PortProject along with Kalatan River All-round De-velopment Project covering the improving ofSittway Deep-sea Port. Thailand and Myanmarare now holding talks to launch Dawei Deep-seaPort Project. India too has interest in Dawei Deep-sea Port Project. Bangladesh wants to trade withChina through Myanmar. India and China want totrade with each other, using Stillwell Road. Indiaand ASEAN countries also want to trade with eachother, using railroads and motorways in Myanmar. If hundreds or thousands of millions of peoplein the region do trade activities, constantlypassing through the Myanmar land bridge,Myanmar will gain economic benefits throughsale of its domestic products, labour and serv-ices, and the people will enjoy higher livingstandard.

Rapidly advancing China badly needs hugesize of fuel for its industries. So, it has prioritizedenergy security and energy sufficiency. Eightyper cent of its imported oil comes from African

and Middle East countries by sea. So, its oiltankers have to pass through Malacca Strait. Thenarrowest part of the straight is as wide as aboutone and a half miles. So, if there is temporaryclosure of the straight due to collision of vesselsor enormous spill of oil, it has to choose a longersea route. If so, it will have to spend more ontransportation of oil and the oil prices in it will goup, in consequence. Furthermore, prices of goodswill rise and that will have a negative impact onits economic competition. Its energy security isnot secure so long as it relies on Malacca Straitfor transport of oil. If it lays an oil pipeline toYunnan Province through Kyaukpyu Deep-seaPort, it will enjoy energy security with less costdue to shorter distance. So, China plans to builda pipeline, spending billions of US dollars topurchase gas from Myanmar. Therefore,Myanmar becomes more and more important forit. And those countries want stability andpeace of Myanmar. In addition, they come toappreciate the efforts the government is mak-ing with farsightedness, industry and correctconcept, standing on its own feet to ensureState stability, peace and development. Neigh-bouring countries have come to support thegovernment that is an organization of fewwords, but achieves great success in its na-tion-building tasks.

I would like to reiterate that according to thegeopolitics, consolidated national unity is thekey to better national interest. The people areconvinced of the fact that sowing dissension anddriving a wedge among national races are de-signed to break up the national interest. In thepost-independence period, multi-coloured in-surgent groups launched their armed revoltagainst the government, resulting from lack ofvision and strategic views of political parties, and their self-centred attitude, and interferenceof some foreign countries in the internal affairs. At that time, the total area under the administra-tive machinery of the then government was

Inorder to achieve the noble aim, the government focuses onequitable improvement of the socio-economic life of allnational brethren. As a result, Myanmar enjoys peace andall-round development at the unprecedented level.

Now the entire country has fully risen from the nightmareand restored stability and peace. It is very apparent to theentire national people that Myanmar took a very long journeyfull of hardships before achieving present conditions. Rem-nant armed insurgents are staying in the refugee camps in theneighbouring country. Myanmar people are therefore to bevigilant against them because they can rear their ugly headsagain before their end. Furthermore, there are many nationalrace peace groups that have returned to the legal fold, but theyhave not surrendered their arms due to various reasons.

However, nowthe entire country has fully risen from the night-mare and restored stability and peace. Myanmarpeople are therefore to be vigilant against thembecause they can rear their ugly heads againbefore their end. Furthermore, there are manynational race peace groups that have returned tothe legal fold, but they have not surrendered theirarms due to various reasons.

Now, the State Constitution (2008) has beenin force with the approval of 92.48 per cent of thevoters. The constitution was written unanimouslyby National Convention delegates, over 60 percent of whom were national races. According tothe constitution, there shall be a single Tatmadawin the nation. All the armed forces are to stand inaccordance with the constitution. If standing inrivalry that is against the constitution, doingillegal livelihoods, poppy farming, production ofnarcotic drugs and illegal import and export ofgoods are rife, that will greatly harm the interestof the whole country and the people. If so, theoffenders will face widespread opposition fromthe people and the government, neighbouring

countries, and the international community. So,any of the citizens has to stay away from suchlawless acts and honour the law. It is required ofthe entire people to form a human society inMyanmar all of whose members remain united inaccordance with the law. To put it another way,the Myanmar society has to practise constitution-alism.

The government has improved all the infra-structures, by constructing an endless numberof infrastructural buildings across the nation. The Tatmadaw government is pursuing its strat-egies with the sharp determination that thenation’s economy must be strong by the timewhen it hands over power to the civilian gov-ernment to be formed under the constitution. When these strategies are all realized, the Un-ion of Myanmar will become a land bridgecountry where not only local people but also a

large number of people from the neighbouringcountries engage in trade activities. So, wehave to work hard together in order that theland bridge country, like East Sea Bridge, willbe well resistant to tidal waves, strong windsand bad weather. After completion, the landbridge will have substantial pillars portrayingforbearance, perseverance, cohesion, farsight-edness, correct concept and conviction, andbig heart of more than 57 million people of thenation. All those experts and political leaderswith an outlook of geo-economics have no-ticed that the land bridge is under constructionin Myanmar. Therefore, the entire people haveto do their bit in the process of constructing theland bridge to make sure that all the pillars ofthe bridge are strong.

VVFirm place to stand outsidesolar system

WASHINGTON, 17 Sept—Researchers havefinally found a placeoutside our solar systemwhere there’s a firm placeto stand — if only itweren’t so broiling hot.As scientists search theskies for life elsewhere, they have found more than300 planets outside oursolar system. But they allhave been gas balls orcan’t be proven to besolid. Now a team ofEuropean astronomers hascon-firmed the first rockyextrasolar planet.

Scientists have longfigured that if life beginson a planet, it needs a solidsurface to rest on, sofinding one elsewhere is a

big deal.”We basicallylive on a rock ourselves,”said co-discoverer ArtieHartzes, director of theThuringer observatory inGermany. “It’s as close tosomething like the Earththat we’ve found so far. It’s just a little too close toits sun.”

So close that its surfacetemperature is more than3,600 degrees Fahrenheit, too toasty to sustain life.It circles its star in just20 hours, zipping aroundat 466,000 mph. Bycomparison, Mercury, theplanet nearest our sun, completes its solar orbitin 88 days.”It’s hot, they’re calling it the lavaplanet,” Hartzes said.

This is a majordiscovery in the field oftrying to find lifeelsewhere in the universe, said outside expert AlanBoss of the CarnegieInstitution. It was the buzzof a conference on findingan Earth-like planetoutside our solar system, held in Barcelona, Spain, where the discovery waspresented Wednesdaymorning. The find is alsobeing published in thejournal Astronomy andAstrophysics.
