Ensure nutritionaldevelopment of mothersand children

The Myanmar Maternal and ChildWelfare Association has organized NutritionalDevelopment Week movements at state anddivision, district, township, ward and villagelevels since the first week of August.

The Department of Health and local peopleare working together to bring NutritionalDevelopment Week movements to fruition thatcover breastfeeding in the first week, nutritionaldevelopment of under-fives in the second week, nutritional development of pregnant women andbreastfeeding women in the third week, andelimination of iodine deficiency in the fourthweek.

Excessive nutrition and malnutrition canpose a health risk for the health of the peopleincluding children and women. The majority ofthe deaths of under-fives due to various diseasesare associated with undernourishment. Some700,000 children in northern, middle andsouthern Africa are suffering seriousmalnutrition.

In Myanmar, activities on nutritionaldevelopment of women and children are carriedout on a broad scale, such as vaccination, diseasecontrol, environmental sanitation, school healthcare, and collecting documentary records onhealth standards of mothers and children.

Moreover, giving additional Vitamin Apills to children between six months and fiveyears, and distributing iron tablets and VitaminB1 tablets to pregnant women are part of thedrive. Nutritional Development Weekmovements also include organizing cookingcompetitions on nutritional development ofpregnant and breastfeeding women and cookerycourses to enhance the health knowledge of thepeople.

Each child can live a healthy and happylife if members of the Myanmar Maternal andChild Welfare Association, medical staff and thepeople work in collaboration in community basednutritional development campaigns at a timewhen the Ministry of Health is expediting publichealth care service across the nation.

8 THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Monday, 17 August, 2009

Is that so, Maung Kalu? More than that, Grandpa

Maung Kalu: How are you, Grandpa? I have just gothome from a journey, and here are some fruit Ibought on my journey for you.

Grandpa: Thank you, Maung Kalu. I thought youwere here to say something about the hot news.

Lu: Right, that is one of the purposes why I am here. The news was on TV repeatedly the whole day on11 August. On that day, I was in the country.

Grandpa: I happened to switch on the TV to watchthat news when neighbours next to my door toldme about it. By the way, what were the commentsof country folks you met in the journey? Werethey interested in the news?

Lu: No, they weren’t. When they heard of the news, they said, “Oh, is that so? The case is over, then.”What they are interested in is that peace hasreturned to normal the whole country due to thefact that armed groups are returning to the legalfold one after another.

Grandpa: You’re right. Since our country regainedindependence, many groups have been involvedin armed conflicts against each other. Trainswere blasted often and many people were killedin the bomb attacks. Insurgents set fire to villagesonce they were dissatisfied with situations. Theycollected extortion money from villagers. Theyoften committed massacres. So, local peoplewere in a state of panic. Indeed, a man can nevercome to power politicians are crazy about as longas he gets involved in violence, massacre, burn-ing down villages and bomb attacks. He will bebestowed with the right to manage public affairson behalf of the people only if he is elected by thepeople. I would say that’s power. In reality, thepeople entrust duties and authority to him.

Lu: The people are the ultimate owner of power, then. In an independent country, sovereignty isin the hands of the people. In an election, thepeople vote for the candidates who are thought tobe capable of serving the public interest. Indeed, they vested duties and authority in the candidatesthey are in support of.

Grandpa: Of course. Politicians, political partiesand parliamentary candidates canvass for votesin elections by pledging the people what theywill do and what programmes they will imple-ment in the public interest if they are elected.

Lu: The people vest the duties to exercise the threesovereign powers on their behalf in the successfulcandidates in a systematic, not irresponsible way.Principles on the ways to exercise sovereign pow-ers are prescribed in the State constitution.

Grandpa: Good, you have improved a lot. The Stateconstitution is a thing that can guarantee freedomof business, nation’s economic growth, a pros-perous future and higher living standard of thepeople. Those who are responsible for comply-ing with the provisions of the constitution arerepresentatives-elect. Therefore, I would saythose who want to enter into politics must be theones who are fond of doing good for others.Serving others’ interest is a form of meritoriousdeed.

Lu: What I notice is that politicians must be loyal tothe people and must serve the public interest in anupright way in order that they are vested with thepower to serve public interest. But, some imma-ture politicians later consider duties and author-

ity to be power. Then, they think nothing is moreimportant than power.

Grandpa: If a politician is crazy about power and heno longer considers that power is a heavy duty toserve public interest, he begins to disregard publicinterest and misuse power. Then, he becomesdesperate to seize power. He turns to armed insur-gency and even commits acts of terrorism.

Lu: To impose economic sanctions in complicity withforeign countries against the mother country, launchbomb attacks to kill civilians and incite massprotests to destroy the people’s peaceful life isstupid, isn’t it, Grandpa?

Grandpa: I agree with you. If a politician reallywants to serve the public interest and enjoydemocracy, he should not trouble the people. He must be loyal and show loving-kindness forthe people to win their trust. Instead, if hedeepens poverty of the people until his partycomes to power, urges foreign countries to im-pose economic sanctions against the nation, thepeople will get into trouble, then. If the peopleare impoverished, they will be dissatisfied withthe government. Then, the people take to thestreets to oppose the government, and his partywill come to power easily. I am sure you noticesuch power-craving politicians.

Lu: Yes, I do, Grandpa. To trouble the public insteadof trying to win people’s votes, trust and relianceis not doing politics or democracy. If a politicianclaims he wants to lead the nation, but he makes thepeople impoverished, creates mass protests andviolates the law and generates public outrage todestroy the life of the people, he will …

Grandpa: He will be kicked out of politics, then. Now,92.48 per cent of the people have approved the newconstitution the people’s representatives adopted, taking time. So, if they love the country, they haveto respect the constitution for the opportunity toserve public interest. They have to take the way todemocracy the people have paved. Then, they willhave to stand for election in the multiparty democ-racy election that is to be held in 2010 in accord-ance with the new constitution.

Lu: So, the democratic process we are carrying out isgetting smooth, isn’t it, Grandpa? You have di-verted our conversation about the news storyMyanma Television aired on 11 August, explain-ing the transition to democracy.

Grandpa: Why are you in such a hurry? I’ll tell younow. Whatever’s done in a nation, politics, economyor social affairs, there is the law of that nation to berespected. If one is to violate law under the name ofpolitics, one will be a criminal. If one unscrupu-lously does what should not be done by breachingthe economic laws, one will be a greedy person, smuggler or criminal. So whatever one does, onemust be in conformity with the law. The law itselfhas to be prescribed to ensure perpetuity of the State, national prosperity, peace and security of the peo-ple, their food security and improvement of theirliving standards. Respect for the law is to serve thepeople’s interests. If one violates law, one will facecharges in accord with the law regardless of who-ever one is rich or poor; educated or uneducated;employed or unemployed; high-ranking or low-ranking. We have heard from world news thatpresidents, prime ministers and ministers of such

and such nations were removed or convicted asthey had committed crimes violating the laws.

Lu:On 11 August the Northern District Court sen-tenced US citizen John William Yettaw to sevenyears rigourous imprisonment for his three chargesand Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Daw Khin Khin Winand Ma Win Ma Ma to three years rigourousimprisonment each. The moment we heard thisnews on TV, we also had to watch news that theoffice of the Chairman of the State Peace andDevelopment Council sent two letters of directiveto the Ministry of Home Affairs on 10 August.

Grandpa: Well, the sentences were passed in a justand fair way by the court according to theirrespective charges. The directive of the Office ofthe SPDC Chairman was issued one day beforeDaw Aung San Suu Kyi’s sentence was passed. The sentences of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, DawKhin Khin Win and Ma Win Pa Pa were com-muted by half. Instead of serving rigourous im-prisonment, she was allowed to stay at her housein peace under discipline. The directives said thatif they three displayed good conduct, pardonwould be granted accordingly.

Lu:So, although they are to serve three years impris-onment each, they are now to serve only 18months according to the directives of the Officeof the SPDC Chairman. They have only half oftheir sentence and can go back to their houseswithout serving their prison terms. Again, if theydisplay good conduct during the remainder oftheir sentences, pardon will be granted and theywill be freed forever.

Grandpa: This is loving-kindness and compassionshown by the State, like parents, towards chil-dren. In other words, it is a way of showinggoodwill attitude towards Daw Suu Kyi, beingthe daughter of Bogyoke Aung San, the architectof independence. As a result, there will be fruitsof community peace and tranquility as there hasbeen no cause for those wanting to incite unrestand violence. It is also a good deed setting asidegrudge between one another. The path weMyanmar people speedily marching on to achievedemocracy will be free from any disturbances.Everyone would have realized the magnanimityand farsightedness of the State. There were manywho phoned me after they had heard of the news. They praised the State for its good move.

Lu:Those from other towns are also pleased with thatand even the sounds of outside instigation havebeen quiet.

Grandpa: It is like a Myanmar saying that goes by“One’s goodwill attracts another’s.” It can alsobe said that this is the reflection of goodwill. TheState has eased restrictions by showing goodwill,loving-kindness and compassion. So in return, the other side should reciprocate.

Lu:As you have said, if the other side shows the sameloving-kindness and goodwill as the State, it willsurely win the heart and soul of the people.

Grandpa: If there is cooperation for the sake of peaceand stability and development desired by thepeople, not only the people but also the celestialbeings will say ‘well-done’.

Grandpa: Is that so, Maung Kalu?Lu:More than that, Grandpa.

Animal foods not linkedto breast cancer

BOSTON, 16 Aug—Three studies provide noevidence that animal foodconsumption increasesthe risk of breast cancer,US and Europeanresearchers said.

In one study, 35 obesepostmenopausal womenwith type 2 diabetesreceived conjugatedlinoleic acid supplementsor a control supplementeach for 36 weeks. In asecond study, researchersexamined the associationbetween conjugatedlinoleic acid intake fromnatural sources and breastcancer incidence in alarge cohort of initiallycancer-free Swedishwomen for 17.4 years.

The third studyassessed whether theconsumption of meat, eggs and dairy products

was associated with breastcancer risk in a group ofhealthy European women, who were tracked for 8.8years.

The findings, scheduledto be published in theSeptember issue of TheAmerican Journal ofClinical Nutrition, providestrong evidence thatconsumption of meat anddairy products by womendoes not, by itself, increase breast cancerrisk, but moderate andmindful consumption ofthese foods can be veryimportant in attainingoptimal nutrition for mostwomen who often do notconsume sufficient ironand calcium. However, conjugated linoleic acidsupplementation maydecrease adiposity — fat.
