PERSPECTIVES

Pay serious attention toconstruction work forregional development

2 THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Tuesday, 15 December, 2009

Nowadays, motor roads and railroads arebeing built in northernmost regions character-ized by poor transport. As a result, those regionswill soon make progress. And it is sure that thesocio-economic status of national races such asKachin, Shan, Bamar, etc residing in those re-gions will improve.

Head of State Senior General Than Shweon 12 December inspected the construction site ofAyeyawady Bridge (Sinkhan) Project nearSinkhan Village of Bhamo Township, KachinState and gave guidance. In his guidance, SeniorGeneral Than Shwe said that it was of greatimportance for personel concerned to pay seriousattention to construction work they were respon-sible for and to carry out assigned duties withUnion Spirit and goodwill, holding the firm spiritthat the gaps between national brethren must benarrowed as much as possible, regions across thecountry must see swift, equitable growth andnational solidarity must be further strengthened.

The two-lane-motor-cum-railroad bridgeis on upper reaches of the second defile ofAyeyawady River, near Sinkhan Village, BhamoTownship. It is of RC steel type and can withstand75 tons of load. On completion, commodities fromvarious regions can speedily flow to Bhamo by caror train through the bridge. The bridge will alsocontribute to the bilateral trade between Myanmarand the People’s Republic of China through theborder trade.

Now, the 98 mile-long Katha-Bhamo rail-road is under construction. There are 66 milesfrom Katha to Ayeyawady Bridge (Sinkhan), and32 miles from the bridge to Bhamo. Completedrailway stations along the railroad section areKatha, Pawmamyine, Minle and Moetagyi sta-tions.

Out of over 200 bridges to be constructed onKatha-Bhamo railroad section, 64 have now beenconstructed.

The government has built a large numberof motor roads and railroads in regions wherethe national brethren reside. With secure andbetter transport, the whole Union will see equita-ble development. And only then, will the socio-economic status of local people improve all themore.

“Cigarettes kill,” but don’ttell smokers

BEIJING, 14 Dec—Study shows that warnings relatedto self-esteem were more effective than those indicat-ing “cigarettes kill” in reducing smoking, accordingto media reports quoting the Journal of ExperimentalSocial Psychology on Monday.

Psychologists from the US, Switzerland and Ger-many conducted a small study and drew the conclu-sion that warnings such as “smoking makes you unat-tractive” or “smoking brings you and the people aroundyou severe damage” do a better job in talking peopleout of their habit.

This worked especially well when people smokedto boost their self-esteem, such as young people wholearned to smoke to become popular or fit in with theirpeers, the psychologists figured out.

“To succeed with anti-smoking messages on ciga-rette packs one has to take into account that consider-ing their death may make people smoke,” the studysaid.

A total of 39 psychology students, smokers agedbetween 17 and 41, participated in the study.

Indonesia’s economic growth bringssmall contribution to tax income

JAKARTA, 14 Dec—Indonesia’s Minister for People’ s Housing Suharso Monoarfasaid on Monday that the economic growth could not generate significant chancein tax ratio to contribute more for the country’s income.

“In the last 20 years, we only have been seeing tax ratio of 12 percent to 13percent. In 2009, we only achieve tax ratio of a little bit more than 12 percent. Wemust work extra hard to achieve 20 percent in the next five years. In 2010, at leastwe could achieve 14 percent,” said the minister, adding that compared to Malay-sia and Singapore, Indonesian tax ratio is relatively lower.

According to the minister at a real estate panel discussion here, economic growthshould generate economic activities which in turn provide benefit for the countryof increasing income to fund infrastructure construction.

“It’s meaningless that we could achieve extra ordinary growth if it brings nosignificant contribution in tax,” said Suharso.

PARIS, 14 Dec — Scientists have usednanosensors for the quick detection ofcancers through blood tests, withnanomaterial also enabling the releaseof medicine at targeted organs, saidstudies released on Sunday.

A technique developed at YaleUniversity in the United States allowsscientists to “detect tiny amounts ofcancer biomarkers in a small volume ofwhole blood in just 20 minutes,” thejournal Nature Nanotechnologyreported.Yale added in a statement thatthe findings could “dramatically simplifythe way physicians test for biomarkers ofcancer and other diseases.”

Researchers developed a device thatacts as a filter and catches cancerbiomarkers, in this case for prostate andbreast cancers, on a chip while washingaway the rest of the blood.

This allows for detection of extremelysmall concentrations on the order ofpicograms (a trillionth of a gram) permillilitre of blood, Yale said.

“This is the equivalent of being ableto detect the concentration of a singlegrain of salt dissolved in a largeswimming pool,” it said.

Current cancer tests take several daysbut the new device is able to read outbiomarker concentrations in a just a fewminutes.—Internet

Beer drinking may slow prostate cancer, but no remedy

BEIJING, 14 Dec — Acompound in beer mayslow down growth of cellsthat cause enlargedprostates, according to astudy conducted by EmilyHo and colleagues fromLinus Pauling Institute of

Oregon State University asquoted by media reportsMonday. But conclusioncannot be drawn thatdrinking beer is a way toprevent prostate cancer, warned the study.

The study found onecompound xanthohumol inhops rendering flavor andbitterness of the beveragehas shown promise inslowing down growth ofcells that cause enlargedprostates.

The researchers foundxanthohumol in a cellculture blocks the signalingof NF-KappaB proteinslowing the growthof benign prostatichyperplasia and malignantprostate cancer cells.

However, the amount of

xanthohumol used in cellcultures to have an effect isequivalent to the amountpresent in 17 beers, anddrinking too much alcoholicbeverage has beenassociated with a number ofcancers. Moreover, thealcohol or whatever elseother than xanthohumol inbeer may offset theprotective effect from thebeer ingredient.

Meanwhile, a studyconducted by researchersat Curtin University inAustralia reviewed 45studies on drinking and riskof prostate cancer andfound heavy drinkers(drinking 14 or morealcoholic drinks per week)were at 20 percentincreased risk.—Internet
