Environmentalconservation — a must

Today, deforestation is rampant aroundthe world causing the greenhouse effect, followed by other natural disasters such assoil erosion, desertification, and swollen riversand creeks.

So, the international community has toget to the center of the global issue, seekingall possible means, establishing forestsextensively, beefing up afforestation indeserts, and growing trees and plants in partlydeforested areas.

Myanmar conserves aquatic andterrestrial sources and woodlandssystematically by designating forest reserves, protected forests and sanctuaries in line withthe Forestry Law. The Ministry of Forestryand related ministries have been establishingwatershed areas, sanctuaries and special teakplantations in regions concerned.

Teak plantations are being nurtured alongBago Yoma mountain range for regionalgreening and regeneration of natural forests. In the forest reserves in Bago Division areplantations of such species of hardwood treesas Hsithabye, ironwood, Pyinma, and gumkino apart from teak. Regional greeningprojects have proved effective in the 13 ariddistricts.

Forests and trees encourage regionalgreening and temperate climate patterns andprovide forest products. Here, conservationof forests and ecosystem is at the centre of theglobal process. In addition, wastes fromindustries, mining, and chemical industriesare to be disposed in a systematic way sincethey are hazardous to aquatic animals.

Pollution of air, water and ground, anddeforestation leads to environmentaldeterioration. Therefore, the people have toconstantly participate in programmesinclusive of setting up plantations extensivelythe government has been implementing forenvironmental conservation.

An estimated 94 percent of patients on anti-retroviral treatment in Africa count on external donorfunds to provide their medications, Sidibe said.

CORVALLIS, 9 March— US researchers suggest agood night’s sleep may help fight deterioration due toaging. Researchers at the Oregon State University inCorvallis linked poorer health and earlier deaths to theabsence of a key gene controlling the biological clockregulating the sleep cycle.

The fruit fly study, published in the journal Aging, found the flies without the gene lived just about aslong as normal flies — unless they were subjected tostress.

When the researchers exposed the flies to a mildmetabolic stress for 24 hours, they found no change inyoung flies, but middle-age and older flies showed sig-nificant damage beginning to occur.

“We’re beginning to identify some of the underly-ing mechanisms that may help explain why organismsage,” Natraj Krishnan said in a statement.

“This study suggests that young individuals maybe able to handle certain stresses, but the same insultsat an older age cause genetic damage and appear tolead to health problems and earlier death. And it’slinked to biological clocks.”—Internet

Pine bark extract may help kidneys How to preserve brain functionBOSTON, 9 March — There are ways to preserve

executive function — being able to make choices, plan, initiate action, inhibit impulses — a US newsletteradvises. The Harvard Health Letter says executivefunction can be more important to functioning inde-pendently as one gets older than retaining memory be-cause it can affect everything from walking speed toattention span to friendships and family ties.

Regular exercise can help preserve executive func-tion. Avoiding high blood pressure and getting enoughsleep each night can also help, the newsletter says.Other ways to maintain executive function include:

— Making an effort to concentrate on tasks.— Saying things aloud when making a plan be-

cause it encourages pausing and paying attention tothe task at hand.

— Creating habits. If keys and other items are al-ways in the same place, executive function is notneeded to figure out where to find them. Making sim-ple things “automatic” may help make complicatedmatters easier to handle.—Internet

Vitamin D critical to fighting infectionsCOPENHAGEN, 9 March — University of Copenhagen researchers report vitamin

D is crucial to activating immune defences to fight off serious infections in thebody.Carsten Geisler said when specialized immune cells — T cells — are ex-posed to a foreign pathogen, it extends a signalling device or “antenna” known asa vitamin D receptor, with which it searches for vitamin D.

“T cell must have vitamin D or activation of the cell will cease,” Geisler said ina statement. “If the T cells cannot find enough vitamin D in the blood, they won’teven begin to mobilize.” Identifying the role of vitamin D in the activation of Tcells has been a major breakthrough, the research team said.

“Scientists have known for a long time that vitamin D is important for calciumabsorption and the vitamin has also been implicated in diseases such as cancer andmultiple sclerosis, but what we didn’t realize is how crucial vitamin D is for actu-ally activating the immune system — which we know now,” Geisler said.

Vitamin D is produced as a natural byproduct of the skin’s exposure to sunlightand is also found in fish liver oil, eggs and fatty fish such as salmon, herring andmackerel or a dietary supplement.—Internet

Exercise helpsif weight isregained

COLUMBIA, 9 March —Many who lose weightsubsequently regain it, butUS researchers say exer-cise can maintain thehealth benefits of weightloss, such as lower bloodpressure.

Tom R Thomas, pro-fessor at the University ofMissouri in Columbia, and colleagues put over-weight men and womenon a diet and a supervisedaerobic five-day-a-weekexercise plan for 4-6months. After losingweight, participants wereseparated into two groups, one that exercised and onethat didn’t.

The non-exercisegroup experienced rapiddeterioration in weight-loss induced benefits. Theexercise group main-tained improvements inalmost all measures, in-cluding oxygen consump-tion, blood pressure andglucose.

Exercise didn’t main-tain blood cholesterol andabdominal fat loss, thestudy said.—Internet

SAN FRANCISCO, 9March — US researcherssay it is unlikely moder-ate caffeine increasesheart arrhythmia risks.

Researchers at the Kai-ser Permanente Divisionof Research in Oakland,Calif., found those whoreported drinking four ormore cups of coffee dailyhad an 18 percent lowerrisk of hospitalization forheart rhythm disturbancesand those drinking one tothree cups each day had a7 percent lower risk.

“Coffee drinking is re-lated to lower risk of hos-

pitalization for rhythmproblems, but the associa-tion does not prove causeand effect, or that coffeehas a protective effect,”lead author Dr ArthurKlatsky said in a state-ment.

“However, these datamight be reassuring topeople who drink moder-ate amounts of coffee thattheir habit is not likely tocause a major rhythm dis-turbance.”

Klatsky and col-leagues looked at 130,054men and women, ages 18-90 — with the majority

age 50 and younger.About 2 percent — 3,317participants — were hos-pitalized for rhythm dis-turbances. Fourteen per-cent in the study drankless than one cup of cof-fee a day, 42 percentdrank one to three cups ofcoffee a day, 17 percentreported drinking fourcups or more each day andabout 27 percent were notcoffee drinkers.

The findings were pre-sented at a conference ofthe American Heart Asso-ciation held in San Fran-cisco.—Internet

CHIETI, 9 March — Italian research-ers say pine bark extract may help coun-teract kidney damage due to high bloodpressure.

Researchers at G D’Annunzio Uni-versity, Chieti, Italy, say treatment withPycnogenol — an anti-oxidant plant ex-tract of a French pine tree — loweredurinary proteins from an average levelof 89 milligrams per 24-hour period to39 milligrams, much closer to the 30-milligram measure at which kidneyfunction is considered sufficient.

“Kidney disease is a common prob-lem for people with hypertension and isan equally ‘silent’ threat to the body.

There are no warning signals and ineffi-cient fluid removal may further increasethe blood pressure, causing a vicious cir-cle to set in,” lead researcher Dr GianniBelcaro said in a statement. “The resultsof this study demonstrated Pycnogenol’sability not only to reduce blood pressure, but also to relieve the kidney damagecaused by chronic hypertension.”

Belcaro and colleagues gave 55 hy-pertensive patients with early signs ofimpaired kidney function anti-hyperten-sive medication Imperil but 29 patientsalso took Pycnogenol. Urine was col-lected at baseline and after six monthsof treatment.—Internet

CINCINNATI, 9 March —US medical investigatorssay they have linked a foodallergy-related disorder toa so-called master allergygene. Researchers led byDr Marc Rothenberg atCincinnati Children’sMedical Centre Hospitalreport identifying a regionof a human chromosomethat is associated witheosinophilic esophagitis, often called EoE, a re-cently recognized allergicdisease.

The scientists said peo-ple suffering EoE fre-quently have difficulty eat-ing or may be allergic toone or more foods, withsymptoms varying withage; In children a majorsymptom is vomiting, while in older children foodmight become stuck in theesophagus.

The study suggests a

suspected so-called masterallergy gene might play arole in the development ofthe rare, but debilitating, disorder.

The researchers, sup-ported by the National In-stitute of Allergy and Infec-tious Diseases and the Na-tional Institute of Diabetesand Digestive and KidneyDiseases, performed a ge-nome-wide associationanalysis in children withEoE and healthy children. The investigators identifiedchanges in genes withina region on chromosome5 that were highly associ-ated with EoE, with onegene that encodes a proteincalled thymic stromallymphopoietin found morehighly expressed in chil-dren with the conditionthan in children without thedisorder.
