THE COLLECT - Sixth Sunday of Easter (Page 170 BCP) O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our under-standing: pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceeds all things that we can desire, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

REFLECTION FIRST LESSON: Paul has set out on his second great missionary journey. Starting from Caesarea Philippi, he has travelled north to Antioch, then generally northwest through Asia Minor. He, Silas and Timothy have now arrived at Troas, a seaport from which ships sailed to Europe.

1st LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Peter Rochester 9:15a.m. - Joan Griffith

FIRST LESSON: Acts 16:9-15 During the night Paul had a vision: there stood a man of Macedonia pleading with him and saying, "Come over to Macedonia and help us." When he had seen the vision, we immediately tried to cross over to Macedonia, being convinced that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them. We set sail from Troas and took a straight course to Samothrace, the following day to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city for some days. On the sabbath day we went outside the gate by the river, where we supposed there was a place of prayer; and we sat down and spoke to the women who had gathered there. A certain woman named Lydia, a worshiper of God, was listening to us; she was from the city of Thyatira and a dealer in purple cloth. The Lord opened her heart to listen eagerly to what was said by Paul. When she and her household were baptized, she urged us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come and stay at my home." And she prevailed upon us.

REFLECTION: THE PSALM: A prayer for God’s graciousness and saving power, and a bidding of praise for the Lord’s justice and bounty.

PSALM: 67 Deus misereatur (7:30a.m. Page 549 BCP) 1. God be merciful unto us, and bless us : and shew us the light of his countenance, and be merciful unto us: 2. That thy way may be known upon earth : thy saving health among all nations. 3. Let the people praise thee, O God : yea, let all the people praise thee. 4. O let the nations rejoice and be glad : for thou shalt judge the folk righteously, and govern the nations upon earth. 5. Let the people praise thee, O God : let all the people praise thee. 6. Then shall the earth bring forth her increase : and God, even our own God, shall give us his blessing. 7. God shall bless us : and all the ends of the world shall fear him.

REFLECTION SECOND LESSON: God is revealing the events of the end-time to John. In his dream, an angel has carried him into the desert to see the decay of imperial Rome. Now an angel shows him the heavenly Jerusalem, open to all people of faith from all nations, where the glory of God, Father and Son, permeates the whole

3

community.

2nd LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Judith Yearwood 9:15a.m. - Men’s Fellowship

SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: Revelation 21:10, 22-22:5

In the spirit the angel carried me away to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God. I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. Its gates will never be shut by day--and there will be no night there. People will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. But nothing unclean will enter it, nor anyone who practices abomination or falsehood, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life. Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him; they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.

GRADUAL HYMN - 312

REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: Jesus continues to prepare his followers for his departure. Judas (not Iscariot) has asked him: “‘how is it that you will reveal yourself to us, and not to the world?’” Jesus answers, but not in a direct manner. Loving Jesus implies obeying him. At the end of time, there will be no separation between God and humans who love him.

THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: John 14:23-29 Jesus said to Judas (not Iscariot), "Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me. "I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you every-thing, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. You heard me say to you, 'I am going away, and I am coming to you.' If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it occurs, so that when it does occur you may believe.

REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: Jesus visits a pool known for its healing properties. The healing Jesus offers is greater and more certain than the best healing available at the pool.

THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: John 5:1-9 After Jesus healed the son of the royal official, there was a festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate there is a pool, called in Hebrew Bethzatha, which has five porticoes. In these lay many invalids--blind, lame, and paralyzed. One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be made well?" The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; and while I am making my way, someone else steps down ahead of me." Jesus said to him, "Stand up, take your mat and walk." At once the man was made well, and he took up his mat and began to walk. Now that day was a sabbath.

THE SERMON

HYMN After The SERMON - 739 A&M

OH, it is hard to work for God, To rise and take His part Upon this battlefield of earth, And not sometimes lose heart!

He hides himself so wondrously, As though there were no God; He is least seen when all the pow’rs Of ill are most abroad.

Ah, God is other than we think, His ways are far above, Far beyond reason’s height, and reach’d Only by childlike love.

Workman of God! O lose not heart, But learn what God is like, And in the darkest battlefield Thou shalt know where to strike.

Then learn to scorn the praise of men, And learn to lose with God; For Jesus won the world through shame And beckons thee His road.

For right is right, as God is God, And right the day must win; To doubt would be disloyalty, To falter were to sin.

Bidding Prayer

For the peace which comes from above, let us pray to the Lord.

Keep the Church in peace, and draw all believers together into one unbroken love…Guided by the Holy Spirit, may her ministers proclaim the gospel by word and example.

Grant peace to the world, peace among nations and races, peace in the hearts of all people…Bless those who hold authority, and incline their wills to seek peace and to maintain it.

We pray that the Lord may be with us and make his home in our homes…Keep us in love and respect for all those who are near to us in family, work or friendship…Give to all in this community the blessing of peace and harmony.

Have mercy on all who suffer where peace is broken, on the victims of war and violence…Have mercy on those who experience domestic violence, and grant that love shall prevail and drive away anger.

We pray for those who have passed through death from the troubles of this world…Receive them into the peace of eternal life, where their Lord has gone before.

May our prayers be heard through Christ who gives us his peace. Amen.

708 MP To God be the glory! Great things he hath done; So loved He the world That HE gave us His Son; Who yielded His life An atonement for sin And opened the life gate That all may go in.

Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord! Let the earth hear His voice; Praise the Lord, praise the Lord! Let the people rejoice: O come to the Father, Through Jesus the Son And give him the glory:

Great things He hath done!

BISHOP’S PASTORAL LETTER

APRIL 26, 2016 My Dear Friends in Christ,

Greetings to you in the name of Our Lord.

During this month of May, the Diocese will focus its attention on one of God's greatest gifts to us, the gift of the family. We extend an invitation to all Barbadians to join us in this observance, under the theme "Celebrating the Barbadian Family". We are reminded of the responsibility placed on each of us to ensure that our families reflect the love and goodness of God.

At this time we pray for vulnerable families. They may be vulnerable for many reasons. One may be the loss of employment by the bread winner. Whatever may be the cause let us reach out to assist in any way we can.

We think of the most vulnerable members of a family, the children. More and more in our country, as in the rest of the world, it is becoming increasingly difficult for many parents to guide their children along a wholesome righteous path. Unfortunately, modern technology has provided them with easy access to a wealth of information, which can be destructive if not properly used and managed.

As we celebrate Home and Family week, let all of us who are parents or guardians make a special effort to protect the young in our care from the many negative influences and practices that detract from their development. Let us provide for them the wholesome alternatives, thus helping them to be strong in the face of the many temptations to engage in unchristian behaviour. Let us, above all, be good examples

We thank God for the elderly persons in our families, They are golden treasures, and sources of the type of wisdom and experiences which formed the foundation of our country. Having these virtues passed on to our youth and future generations, can work to make our country better and stronger. Let us extend to our seniors the care and support they fully deserve.

I extend an invitation to you to attend a lecture on May 3, at 8.00p.m. at the Law Lecture Theatre , by Professor Emeritus, Christine Barrow. This presentation will examine some of the “21st Century Challenges Facing The Barbadian Family”.

May God bless our families and strengthen us to ensure that they are the best examples and experiences of his love.

Your friend and Bishop, +John Barbados

Dedication Prayer Lord, be with us this day and throughout the week; Within us to purify us; Above us to draw us up; Before us to lead us; Behind us to restrain us; Around us to protect us. Amen.

BLESSING

Smile: A taxi was driving down a busy main road, The taxi's passenger tapped the driver on the shoulder to ask him a question. The driver screamed, lost control of the car, nearly hit a bus, went up on the footpath, and stopped centimetres from a shop window. For a second everything went quiet in the cab, then the driver said "Look mate, don't ever do that again. You scared the daylights out of me!" The passenger apologised and said he didn't realise that a little tap could scare him so much. The driver replied "Sorry, it's not really your fault. Today is my first day as a cab driver - I've been driving 'hearses' for the last 25 years!!!!!
