Worthy of special attention is the ‘My Favourites’ kitchen collectionfrom Mariella-Ahrens. This superb example runs on the latest mediarails, demonstrating what can be achieved by successful interdisci -plinary cooperation in the Design Workshop; based on the developmentof common product concepts and positioned using innovative salesand distribution tools.
The individuality of Forum26 will underline differences betweenproduct types and their underlying concepts – functional product information with an emotional backdrop.
Together with the other Forum26 partners, I look forward to themany interesting and valuable discussions we will have with visitorsto the Design Workshop from a wide range of professional disciplines.

Networked Skills – All Under One Roof
The Perfect PackageLast autumn the Forum26 Design Workshop brought together 20 exhibitorsfrom a wide range of disciplines, with the aim of generating and collectingnew ideas, making new contacts, and stimulating new business. Since then, their number has doubled to 40 businesses and brands. The original aimwas to create a network that combines and blends skills in the design of kitchens, bathrooms and the home, and is now better defined.
Members include manufac-turers of stone and ceramicworktops, kitchen equip-
ment, sinks, fittings, waste disposalsystems, drawer and cupboard fittings, tiles, light systems, tablesand benches. In addition there areextravagant designer creations insolid wood, accessories for the kitchen and home, bathrooms andstoves. The new Forum26 DesignWorkshop aims to bring togetherand harmonise the entire range ofproducts for the kitchen and home. The underlying goal is to inspirekitchen designers and promote exchanges between manufacturers– right through to joint projects, such as exports.
Or, to put it in a nutshell: networking is the objective.
The idea was first launched at the exhibition centre in the autumn of last year. Michael Ottomanaged to secure the premises just
before Küchenmeile 2014 and gainbacking for the idea. In spite of thefact that time was very limited theplan attracted support from some20 firms, since when their numberhas grown to about 40 companiesand brands that will occupy a2,000 m² exhibition zone. Otto believes he is on the right road:“Not only is all the space taken, wehave received additional enquiriesfrom Switzerland, Austria and Italy.”Many of the in-house trade fairsand centres in East Westphalia arestill trying to attract visitors. Theseare niche businesses the DesignWorkshop has not yet approached.
He adds: “We are different, inthat we go for team-oriented cooperation, rather than the usualvertical supplier-customer relati-onship.” Otto runs a networkingimport-export business based atOsa near Iserlohn. “We work actively with other businesses
throughout the year and are absolutely focused on our cus -tomers; retailers sit with us aroundthe same design table. We generatenew ideas through regular presen-tations and visits to workshops. Inaddition, we find that property developers, architects and Asiancustomers use the forum to discussjoint projects. If you can get all thesuppliers from different disciplinestogether in a single showroom, there is a real win-win situation foreverybody.
This year there has been notonly been an increase in the num-ber of participants – for exampleWMF, Kesseböhmer, also worktopmakers Schwanekamp, Rosskopf+Partner – but also in the large kitchens show on the ground floorwith Störmer and exclusive partnerGorenje. Upstairs the emphasis ison individual presentations by suppliers and their new products,
A platform for manufacturers ofcomplementary kitchen and
home products can now be foundat the heart of Germany’s EastWestphalian kitchen and sup-pliers’ industries. This was the
starting block for the conversionof Forum26 into a design work-
shop. Since then it has developedfrom being a trade fair meeting
place into a year-round centre forinternational exchange.

Germany’s East Westphalia regionmay be home to a large part of

Many now long for a more natural living environment,
and prefer a dwelling with its owncharacter; perhaps one that tells astory but nevertheless looks smartand stylish, but is not cold or impersonal. The feel-good factorusually comes from the authenticwarmth exuding primarily fromnatural materials and emphasising individuality of the home. Theseare exactly the criteria used by manufacturer Holzloft, whose loftworkshop is the birthplace for handcrafted high-value products in solidwood.
Based at Enger in Germany’s EastWestphalia furniture manufacturingregion, Holzloft customers get acustom-de signed and built solutionto meet their personal require-ments; one that merits a place ofhonour within their own fourwalls. In this situation, wood is thekey material for a perfect solution. It is the only naturally renewable
construction material; one whichis the product of its local climate, soil, immediate environment andtheir influences. In addition, everytree is unique. Some of them were growing before the Thirty YearsWars, so the wood has seen manylocal changes. Hundreds of yearsago wood was used to build animalstalls, houses and entire towns. Itdeveloped its own individual character. The type of construction, the location, use by man and beast, sun, rain, wind and fire all left theirmark on the material. From this,Holzloft makes shelves, tables, chairs and lamps symbolising natural authenticity.
The business is owned by UdoGramit: “Our philosophy is to respect the age and history of thematerial by individual crafting anddesign; creating furniture of uniquecharacter.”

Tiles and kitchen sinks are twocore areas of business for Villeroy
& Boch, and both are strongly represented in the Forum26 DesignWorkshop. The latest ceramic sinkshave been cast in bold yellow to deliver strong spot colour, while thenew tiles are a symbiosis of modernand traditional styles. The company’smotto ‘Inspired by our history’ isan oblique reference to its owntrack record in decor design, andits reinterpretation of some designsfrom bygone eras. For example, thenow famous 19th Century Mett -lacher Platten can again be foundin a modern context with colours, formats and patterns combined andblending with current trends. In addition, the range is based on the
modern ‘industrial style’ with expressive surfaces reminiscent ofcast concrete or an exclusive ‘used’look. To meet a widespread desirefor mate rials that embrace naturalcharacteristics, Villeroy & Boch hasits own unique embossed characterconveying authen ticity; it uses original shapes and natural coloursin its own special way. Inspired bynatural rocks, the stone-like patternshave consistent colour combina -tions and patterns, or the tile surfacehas the appearance of wood. Inevery case, ceramics products fromVilleroy & Boch embody an appea-rance bringing individual charm tothe home.

An enamel washbasin and bathsupported by a simple open
steel frame? That’s the basic idea behind the BetteLux Shape – a newconcept in bathroom design thatleaves both the inner and outer sur-faces of bath or washbasin open toview. The idea of an exoskeleton isnow generally accepted as an archi-tectural ironwork design feature andis one of the highlights of modernbuilding construction. However, notmany materials lend themselves tothis approach in interior design. Unthis case the washbasin and bathare held, supported and highlightedwithin an open steel frame. The powder-coated frames are
available in a range of accent colours, but for the moment bath-tubs are only available in black orwhite. The open-frame construc-
tion is very elegant – but wouldnot conceal the slightest flaw. Thewashbasin and bathtub are enamel-coated on both sides, excluding thepossibility of the slightest compro-mise, but fittings such as the wastepipe and overflow must of coursemeet the same high standard. A visible overflow system would bequite unacceptable on a bath ofthis kind. The answer was foundin the shape of a new design fromdrain specialist Viega, whichfunctions without an overflow out-let. It is operated with an electronicbath water depth monitoring sys -tem. If the water goes beyond apredefined depth, a drain valveopens for 15 seconds to maintaina steady level.
