The IRC A Class enjoys a number of races including 2 sets of Windward-Leewards; one set takes place in amongst the small isles of the Riau Archipelago and a final set on the last day in the Singapore Straits. ‘Round-the-Cans’ tends to be where overall Regatta winners are established however the Neptune really revolves around one race; The Race to Zero. The Neptune is the only regatta on earth that centres around a 80 nm race to the equator giving racers the goal of taking the ultimate honour of crossing ‘The Line’. The Neptune Regatta racing schedule* will consist of:

• The Race to Zero, the passage race direct to the equator from Nongsa Point Marina • Set of Windward-Leewards in equatorial waters • Sprint Race with the entire fleet from Neptune Island to cross the equator & back.

Boats will have their race time frozen at the equator to allow crews to pay homage to King Neptune and convert slimy Polliwogs to honourable Shellbacks.

• Lay Day to relax on Neptune Island and visit the local village for traditional dancing and entertainment.

• Passage race back north to Nongsa Pont Marina • Final set of Windward-Leewards

Please note that this is an ISAF OSR Category 3 Regatta and is only open to experienced passage racing boats and crew. The 2 passage races down to and up from the equator can be arduous. The NOR & SI’s may be downloaded directly from the Neptune Regatta website when available. For comprehensive regatta details & registration please see the dedicated Neptune Site:

The IRC B & PY Cruising Classes enjoy a slightly more serene regatta with 2 night stop overs at the beautiful Karas Besar Anchorage. The Neptune Regatta racing schedule* will consist of:

• 35 nm passage race from Nongsa Point Marina Resort to Karas Besar Anchorage • 40nm passage race to Pulau Buaya (10 nm north of the equator) • Zero The Race; Sprint Race with the entire fleet from Neptune Island to cross the

equator & back. Boats will have their race time frozen at the equator to allow crews to pay homage to King Neptune and convert slimy Polliwogs to honourable Shellbacks.

• Lay Day to relax on Neptune Island and visit the local village for traditional dancing and entertainment.

• Passage Race back up to Karas Besar • Passage Race returning to Nongsa Point Marina Resort

As with all yacht regattas, there is a competitive edge between boats irrespective of class, however, the IRC B & PY Classes allow participants to spend more time enjoying the stunning beauty of the Riau Archipelago and minimise on night sailing.

Please note that this is an ISAF OSR Category 3 Regatta and is only open to experienced passage racing boats and crew. The NOR & SI’s may be downloaded directly from the Neptune Regatta website when available. For comprehensive regatta details & registration please see the dedicated Neptune Site:

Thanks again for doing this. It's so often the case that "bar talk" never makes it to the next level - let alone delivering something as monumental and historic as this. My faith in bar talk is restored! Bravo.

A FANTASTIC job well done. Brilliant performance and no hiccups.

On behalf of everyone who participated, a BIG thank you to you and the team.

The Neptune Regatta is the only regatta we know of that includes a Motor Yacht Rally, bringing together sailors & explorers, irrelevant of vessel type.

The Motor Yacht Rally is all about having a great time whilst enjoying a new camaraderie with the sail yachts. Whereas the motor yachts are not participating in a race there is an award for the boat and guests who best emulate the attributes of fun & participation; The ‘Spirit of Neptune’ Award.

The Rally follows the same route and schedule as the IRC B & PY Cruising Yachts. This allows the 3 classes to share the experience of cruising through the beautiful waters and past numerous uninhabited islands that make up just part of the extensive Riau Archipelago.

The MY Rally schedule* will consist of:

• Rally south from Nongsa Point Marina Resort to Karas Besar Anchorage • Continue to Pulau Buaya (10 nm north of the equator) • Join the entire fleet from Neptune Island to cross the equator & back. Boats will have

time at the equator to allow crews & guests to pay homage to King Neptune and convert slimy Polliwogs to honourable Shellbacks.

• Lay Day to relax on Neptune Island and explore the local village flowed with traditional dancing and entertainment.

• Passage Rally back up to Karas Besar Anchorage • Return to Nongsa Point Marina Resort

As well as all the organisational support with accompanying committee vessels and the Indonesian Navy, all navigational data is shared with MY Skippers prior to departure. The Motor Yacht Instructions can be downloaded directly from the regatta website when available.

Some people take part in the Neptune Regatta for the racing and challenges. Some people take part for the adventure and exploration. Most for the beautiful waters and surrounding scenery. But absolutely everybody takes part to cross the equator and join a very select few that have the right to state that they have sailed across the equator and are therefore trusty Shellbacks. Crossing the equator to enter into the court of King Neptune is a tradition that dates back hundreds of years. Just by entering ‘King Neptune’ or ‘Equator’ into ‘You Tube’ you will come across dozens of videos capturing people paying homage along with Pathe Newsreels of presidents and royalty all being judged by Neptune & Davy Jones as Polliwogs and then ritually baptised as his new court members; Trusty Shellbacks. Neptune Regatta participants vary in their interpretation of the age old ritual. Some prepare ghastly concoctions and dress in full regalia depicting wretches of the deep. Others pop a champagne bottle and raise a toast to Neptunus Rex. However celebrated, the act of crossing the equator as one fleet, in the world’s only regatta that traverses ‘The Line’, brings together a camaraderie and unity in being a member of a very select few. More people have summited Everest than have presently raced to the equator! Which is why from an IRC A Racing perspective, winning ‘The Race to Zero’ is a very, very big deal. To recognise the achievement, every participant receives an official certificate and each vessel a plaque to commemorate the moment.

Great regatta right across the board and one that caters for everyone no matter what age or type of boat owned. It was good to have the power boats along to add that extra dimension. Already thinking about next year, Kukukerchu will be there…

David Ross, Skipper of IRC Kukukerchu

Sunburned to a crisp, muscles very stiff, head quite sore and feet rather unusable but a good time nevertheless hosting the race to the equator this week, lots of partying and sailing, new friends and very fond memories.

Page 11: The Neptune Regatta Brochure

The Neptune Regatta is an entirely unique sailing & cruising experience. Here are a few of the reasons why:

• NR is the world’s only regatta that centres on a race to the equator • NR is the only regatta to incorporate a Motor Yacht Rally • Participants sail through the pristine Riau Archipelago in waters rarely seen • The southern base is a prepared uninhabited white beached island on which

temporary accommodation, a bar and café will be available. • Participants have an opportunity to explore one of the last accessible places on earth

that remains natural • The local community interacts and entertains with traditional singing and dancing • Beach parties that take place under an explosion of stars from both hemispheres

Full information is available on the Neptune website and also on our dedicated Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/Neptune.Regatta where you can get feedback from previous participants.

Safety & Security The Neptune Regatta is an ISAF OSR Category 3 Regatta which means yachts will be required to have the relevant equipment and training as per the NOR and SI’s. The organisers provide a search and rescue team with qualified medic. An equipped marine engineer will also be available for the MY Fleet. The SAR Team (Royal Marine Commandos) also act as internal security and in addition, the Indonesian Navy shadow the fleet throughout the regatta. All areas the fleet sails through have been reconnoitred and anchorages tested and checked.

The fleet is exclusively limited to 40 vessels; 30 sailing yachts & 10 MY’s. This is to keep the logistics manageable but more importantly to keep the effect on the environment we are guests in to an absolute minimum with the goal of zero impact.
