    INTRODUCTION

    BackgroundThe Nelson Mandela African Institute of Scienceand Technology in Arusha (NM-AIST) is one in anetwork of Pan-African Institutes of Science andTechnology located across the continent. Theseinstitutes envision training and developing the nextgeneration of African scientists and engineers witha view to impacting profoundly on the continentsdevelopment through the application of science,

    engineering and technology (SET).

    The NM-AIST in Arusha, which is accredited by theTanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) is

    being developed into a world class researchintensive institution for postgraduate and post-docs studies and research in SET. Its key missionis to produce: (1) Top-notch SET academics forHigher Learning Institutions: (2) Competentresearchers for R&D Institutions; and (3) Techno-preneurs, Industry Captains and InnovationsManagers for stimulating, catalyzing andpromoting business start-ups and growth of the

    local Industry. The training, therefore,incorporates appreciable doses of relevantbusiness studies and humanities designed todevelop attributes that will enable the engineering

    and science students become effective industrycaptains, technology managers and academicleaders.

    Fields of StudyThe NM-AIST curricular is designed to beresponsive to the technological needs andproblems of the African society and industry. Thefields of study covered by NM-AIST are LifeSciences and Bio-engineering, Mathematics andComputational Science and Engineering,Information and Communication Science andEngineering, Hydrology and Water ResourcesEngineering, Environmental Science andEngineering, Materials Science and Engineering,

    and Sustainable Energy Science and Engineering.The training programmes are designed to

    stimulate, catalyze and promote enhancedprovision of technical know-how that will enable

    improved productivity in agriculture, value additionto natural products, and establishment anddevelopment of SET-based small and mediumbusinesses, and hence improved livelihoods and

    economic growth.

    StaffThe NM-AIST has recruited substantial numberof highly qualified core staff from the region andabroad, and enjoys full support from AfricanScientists in the Diaspora, through the African

    Renaissance Institute of Science and Technology(ARIST). Furthermore, the institution has engagedvisiting reputable professors who are teaching andconducting research in the best Universities in theUSA, Europe, and South Korea, among many othercountries.

    Laboratories and EquipmentThe NM-AIST is being developed into a world-classinstitution characterized by laboratories furnishedwith the state-of-the-art equipment and facilities.Apart from the well known and conventionalequipment, the institution boasts of sophisticated

    analytical equipment. When need arises, theinstitution has in place arrangements for studentsto access and utilize highly specialized equipmentat various world-class universities locally andabroad.

    LocationThe 199 acres modern campus of NM-AIST is atthe former CAMARTEC premises in Tengeru, 16 kmEast of Arusha City Centre.

    One can access the NM-AIST Tengeru campusthrough the Nelson Mandela road or using the

    current Arusha-Moshi road up to Tengeru and then

    turning south.

    INVITATION OF APPLICATIONS

    Programmes on OfferThe NM-AIST hereby invites applications fromsuitably qualified candidates to pursue Mastersand/or PhD study programmes. The programmes

    on offer from September 2012 will be: Life Sciences and Bio-Engineering (LSBE), Mathematics and Computational Science and

    Engineering (MCSE);

    Information and Communication Science andEngineering (ICSE);

    Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering(HWRE);

    Environmental Science and Engineering(EnSE);

    Materials Science and Engineering (MaSE); Sustainable Energy Science and Engineering

    (SESE).

    Entry QualificationsAdmission to the programmes is open to anyqualified applicant from Tanzania, the EasternAfrican Region and Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Theminimum qualifications for one to be eligible foradmission to NM-AISTs Masters and PhDprogrammes are as follows:

    i) Admission into Masters Programmes:Applicants must be holders of relevant goodbachelors degrees, with GPAs of at least3.5/5.0 or the equivalent, from recognized

    institutions.

    ii) Admission into PhD Programmes: In additionto criterion (i) above, applicants mustpossess relevant good Masters degreeawards of at least the equivalent of B+ fromrecognized institutions.

    Candidates for whom English was not their studylanguage at undergraduate level will be required toprove their English proficiency by taking TOEFLexamination. The minimum accepted TOEFL scoreis 90 points made up of following minimum in eacharea: Reading - 25; Listening - 20; Speaking - 20;and Writing - 25.

    In addition to the criteria above, applicants mustmeet the programme specific requirements below:

    Life Sciences and Bioengineering (LSBE):Holders of BSc, or equivalent, in one of the

    following: Medicine, Biomedical, Veterinary,

    Zoology, Biotechnology, Agriculture General, CropScience, Horticulture, Animal Science, Biology,

    Botany, Food Science, Home Economics,Nutrition, Wildlife Management, Forestry,Aquaculture, Ecology, Environmental Sciences,Chemical Engineering, or related fields.

    Mathematics and Computational Scienceand Engineering (MCSE): Holders of BSc, orequivalent, in one of the following: PureMathematics, Computer Science, Computer

    Engineering, Mathematics, or related fields.

    Information and Communication Scienceand Engineering (ICSE): Holders of BSc orequivalent in one of the following:Telecommunications Engineering, ElectricalEngineering, Electronics and Communications

    SponsorshipThe onus is on the applicants to ensure that they

    have the full sponsorship for the studies, be itself, family or third party. Applicants aretherefore urged to seek and secure suchsponsorship to cover the entire duration of thestudies. Evidence of sponsorship is a necessarycondition for enrolment of admitted candidates.

    NM-AIST has secured very limited number ofscholarships which may be awarded to some ofthe most competitive and needy candidates.
