THE NATION’S

BIGGESTHOUSEWARMING

Fundraising Toolkit

National Energy Action The idea behind the campaignEstablished in 1981, National Energy Action (NEA) has spent the past 38 years working to bring an end to fuel poverty. As the leading national fuel poverty charity, NEA works in partnership with central and local government, fuel utilities, housing providers, health services and consumer organisations across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to support fuel poor households.

Around 4 million households in the UK live in fuel poverty. We passionately believe that no person deserves to live in cold, damp conditions, struggling to afford and understand their fuel bills. We aim to help the most vulnerable achieve what should be a basic human right – to live in a safe, warm, dry home. We take action to help people who are vulnerable stay warm in their homes. This is achieved through delivering a range of activities including: • Education and training of both professionals working with those in fuel poverty, with fuel poor households themselves and with school and college children• Undertaking research and analysis into the causes and extent of fuel poverty and the development of policies which will address them• Managing demonstration projects which show innovative ways of tackling fuel poverty to bring wider benefits to local communities• Providing specialist one-to-one support and advice to those in fuel poverty and fuel debt

NEA invites you to the annual NATION’S BIGGEST HOUSEWARMING on Friday 15th February. This will coincide with Fuel Poverty Awareness Day, a nationally recognised event promoting the pressing issue of fuel poverty and the importance of ensuring that everyone has access to a warm home. The money raised through the HOUSEWARMING will enable NEA to deliver projects and to campaign for homes which are warmer, healthier and affordable to heat. We are a small charity with a wide reach and an even bigger vision. We have direct links to fuel poor and local communities and have an expert ability to translate individual circumstances and issues into a framework for government and other agency strategic action. With your support we can continue to work with you to eradicate fuel poverty. Host your ideal housewarming on Friday 15th February and help us raise the much needed funds to support this growing and pressing issue. Whether you raise £5 or £5,000, your donations will help change the lives of those in fuel poverty and assist others to continue to support those in need.

With fuel poverty statistics soaring across the UK, NEA is determined now more than ever to act. The housewarming event aims to raise awareness of the impacts of fuel poverty alongside raising funds to help us continue to deliver projects, campaigning for and supporting those in need.

“I find myself not eating at all just to keep it [the heating] on and keep the house warm. I can go a

couple of days without eating.”

The NATION’S BIGGEST HOUSEWARMING will coincide with Fuel Poverty Awareness Day on Friday 15th February 2019 and will conclude NEA’s Warm and Safe Homes Campaign. This is NEA’s annual winter campaign raising fuel poverty awareness and developing and progressing solutions to improve access to energy efficiency advice products and services.

We aim to encourage as many of you as possible to get together and hold your own housewarming. Two voices are better than one; imagine how much noise we could make if we all took part? It is time for us to stand together:

• To stand for all the households battling with whether to ‘eat or heat’• To stand for the 50,100 excess winter deaths in England and Wales in 2017-18 • Host a NATION’S BIGGEST

HOUSEWARMING event

We invite all of you, our supporters, members and donors, to organise a low cost event to raise awareness and funds. Gather your friends, family, colleagues or even venture into your local community and host your perfect housewarming.

Organising your eventTo take part in The HOUSEWARMING start by deciding what you would like to host. Our idea of the perfect housewarming is a big get together over a good cuppa with some home baked goodies with an imaginative twist. We want to know what your ideal housewarming is? Below are a few ideas of what else you could do, but please feel free to come up with your own, the more imaginative the better!

• Bake cakes that describe your personalities getting people to guess who’s baked them

• “Great British Bake-off” style event • Dinner party with fuel poverty quizzes and games• Murder mystery night• Black-tie work day, come to work in evening wear with

ball gowns and tuxes• Work fancy dress day, will it be themed or simply who’s

the best dressed? • Switching party - get your colleagues to see how much

they’d save if they switched energy suppliers

Once you’ve got an idea promote your housewarming to maximise the number of people who attend and the money raised. Some posters are included in your packs and are also available for you to download. Simply complete the details on the poster showing where and when the event will take place and display them around your office, community centre or local library. You can also promote your housewarming via the local press or social media. To receive a template press release for you to adapt and send to your local paper, please contact Nina Dunlavy at [email protected] . Don’t forget to take photographs to showcase your efforts, however please consider people’s privacy and seek permission before publishing or using the images. To further promote your event and to show your support for the campaign, NEA has specially designed a NATION’S

BIGGEST HOUSEWARMING logo for you to use. Consider changing your work and home email signature to include an appeal for sponsorship with a link to your fundraising page. This is a great way to raise awareness of what you’re doing. Get friends and colleagues to add your appeal to their signatures too. For an electronic copy of the logo contact Alice Dalgleish at [email protected]

Follow NEA on Twitter and tweet about your event using the hash tag #neahousewarming. We will retweet your event to all of our followers. Please remember to keep us informed of your activities so we can publicise them as part of the wider campaign. Follow our example and support the day by taking your very own mugshot selfie and sharing on twitter! Don’t forget to add us in and use the hashtag #neahousewarming or #neamugshot. Watch out in the post for our NATION’S BIGGEST

HOUSEWARMING mug which will look great in photos and can be sent out to support your event.

National Energy Action

NEA’s Warm and Safe Homes Campaign The Warm and Safe Homes (WASH) Campaign aims to raise awareness that living in a cold and damp home can significantly impact health and safety. It has provided information and advice on the help that is available for those vulnerable to the cold, so they are better prepared for another ‘Beast from the East’ or similar weather front this winter.

From the launch back in November 2018 we have been encouraging NEA members and local MPs to support the campaign in various ways, these include; - Sharing the campaign messaging on social media #warmsafehome- Sharing the Warm and Safe Homes Action Guide amongst organisations and to the public- Using social media platforms to show support for the campaign- Disseminate the ‘Frozen Nation’ regional video at events and meetings- To get involved with Fuel Poverty Awareness Day and The Nation’sBiggest Housewarming on the 15th February 2019
