RachelKushnerisbestknownforThe Flamethrowers—herwidelyacclaimednovelaboutayoungwomannicknamedRenowhoracesmotorbikes,makesfilms,navigatesthe70sNewYorkartsceneandthenissuckedintotheturbulenceofItaly’sRedBrigades.Thisportraitofanerashufflesbetweentimesandplaces,channelingtheenergiesofthe20thcenturywithsuchpalpabledetailthatfeelsasifitwerewrittenfromthepulseofhistory.
It’snosurprisethatRachelisdrawntocinema,amediumsimilarlyattunedtotheclamoroftheworld.There’ssomethinginherentlycinematicaboutKushner’sprose—anattentiontohowpeoplespeakandastrong,playfultemporalsense.Herfictionhasarareimmediacy.Anditisfullofencounterswithcinema,includingreferencestospecificfilms.ChantalAkerman’smeticuloushousewifefromJEANNEDIELMAN,thesolitarytitlecharacterfromBarbaraLoden’sWANDA,andtheenigmatichomelessteenagerfromanobscureItaliandocumentaryANNAallmakecameos,wanderingseamlesslyfromscreentothetext,bringingtheweightoftheirownstories.

RetainingstronglinkswithhisworkingclassLancashirebackgroundandtheinfluenceofIrishCatholicparentswhosteeredtheirsontowardthepriesthood,Boylespentmorethanadecadedirectingtheaterandproducingfortelevisionbeforemakinghissensationalfeaturefilmdebut,theinsidiouslycomiccrimedramaSHALLOWGRAVE(1994).Itssuccesspavedthewayfortheraw,rollickinglookatfringyEdinburghheroinaddicts,TRAINSPOTTING(1996),whichmadeastarofEwanMcGregor,boastedoneofthegreatestsoundtrackseverandprovedtobeadefiningfilmofthe1990s.

Eachofhis(often)multi-partprogramsfortheBBChavebeenunique.Ofcourse,therearehistoricalantecedents,butIliketothinkofhisworkashavingemerged,fully-formed,fromtheheadofCurtis.MyintroductioncameinTHEPOWEROFNIGHTMARES(2004).IfoundmyselflearningthingsthatIknewnothingabout,like“TeamB”orSayyidQutb.Yes,thereisapedagogicelement,buthisworksarefarfrominstructionalvideosorattemptstoplaytothechurchchoir.Theyarecarvingupthelandscapeofhistoryinnewandunexpectedways.Andtheygiveapictureofthepeoplewhocreatehistoryandwhooften,asaresult,makeuphistoryoutofwholecloth.Thetitleitselfisapaeantotheorphicpowerofideas.Ideasthatframe,ideasthatcoerce,ideasthatundermine,ideasthattransform.Allmeldedintoanassortmentofinterviews,foundfootagefromtheBBCarchive,andpopularmusic.
Butitisnotjustthecontent.Whowouldlikeamovieifitwerecontentalone?Itisalsothestyle.Attimes,almostananti-style.Chairspileduphiggledy-piggledyinanemptyclassroom.Badinstitutionaldecorcelebratedinitsownright.Seeminglymeaninglessdetailsthattakeonastrange,auspiciouscharacteroftheirown.Alightswitchinthemiddleofawall.Andtheubiquitousfoundfootageisrarely,ifever,show-and-tell.Instead,themusicandfoundfootagecombineflirtswitharandomnessthatitneverembraces.Achaosofrichassociationsandconnections.Iftheunderlyingthemeis“contextiseverything,”thestyleoftheartrepeatedlyunderlinesthispremise.Andguesswhat?Curtiskeepsgettingbetterandbetter.Icanonlyimaginewhatmighthappenifhecontinuesonlikethisforanother20years.
Allowmetociteoneexample:thesequenceinBITTERLAKE(2015)thatplaysoverKanyeWest’s“Runaway.”AnAfghanmanplayfullyshowsoffhismartialartsmovesforthecamerawhileoutfittingaUNICEFtent.Wefollowhimfromthetentandseamlesslyintoamuzzylandingzone,arotor-generatedsandstormswirlingacrossalineofkneelingsoldiersinanemptyexpanse.Then,aTalibanvideoinwhichashroudedmujahidtellsustolookintoourownhistoryifwetrulywanttounderstandtheconflictthere.
