The Detroit Free Press said it best, “She’s young and beau-tiful to look at, she’s a wonderful storyteller and her vocals are consistently breathtaking. Her shows are electrify-ing, and crowd-pleasing. This doe-eyed Motown (Detroit, Michigan) native has the “it” factor. Look out world.”

Her debut album, Tell You What I Know (2014 DeChamp Records), received much acclaim and stayed in the top 10 on Billboard’s Hot Singles Sales Chart for 21 weeks – 2 of those at #1. The album also made it as high as #3 on the Billboard’s Blues Chart.

It’s clear that soul-blues is her calling. At age 30, Thames’ stage presence and vocal delivery are more reminiscent of singers from the golden era of the artform than they are of most blues belters on the scene today. Her delivery is never rushed, and her ability to express deep emotion is on par with someone twice her age as she delivers every-thing from downhome juke joint stylings to full-blown torch songs, all containing messages of positive affirmation.

“Feral blues guitar...non-stop gigging has sharpened his six-string to a razor’s edge... his eloquence dazzles...he achieves pyrotechnics that rival Beck and Clapton.” --Rolling Stone

--Los Angeles Times

“Raw and righteous, funky and strong.” --Village Voice

--From the artist’s websiteBluesEd band, The Redwoods, traveled to Memphis in Jan-uary to take part in the International Blues Challenge, per-forming on historic Beale Street in the Youth Showcase. The band performed for a large crowd at Club 152 on two occasions: once as a part of the BluesEd clinic and also for the IBC Youth Showcase. Their performances and the success of the BluesEd program helped to spark interest among blues societies from around the country in the pos-sibility of creating their own youth blues programs similar to BluesEd.

In addition to watching the performances of the competing blues bands each night, members of the band also took part in many of the attractions the city has to offer, in-cluding touring the Gibson guitar factory, visiting the Mem-phis Drum Shop, exploring the legendary Sun Studio, and checking out the Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum. The Redwoods also experienced the Southern cuisine, enjoying the bar-becue and fried chicken.

“It was too good to be true, walking down Beale Street and hearing a different blues band playing at every venue each night. Besides the great food and the spectacular bands, the best part of the trip was getting to experience it all in with some of my best friends. Playing in the IBC with the Redwoods in Memphis reaffirmed my love of performing and my love of the blues, and I can’t wait to go back some-day.” -Sam McDermott, keys

Band members, including Sam McDermott (keys), Mike Mc-Dermott (drums), Hunter Neumayer (guitar and sax), Ro-man Constantino (guitar), Henry Tomsu (bass), Madeline Reddel (vocals), and Olivia Klein (vocals), would like to thank BluesEd and the BSO for providing them with this amazing opportunity to experience the IBC on Beale Street. It was the trip of a lifetime to be able to enjoy the blues and the city of Memphis with their bandmates and families.

Iowa City blues musician Kevin B.F. Burt was the winner of the Solo/Duo competition at the 34th International Blues Challenge (IBC), presented by the Blues Foundation, on Saturday evening. In addition, he won the Lee Oskar Best Harmonica award and the Cigar Box Guitar award for Most Promising Acoustic Act. Kevin was among 235 bands & solo/duo acts from around the world en-tered into the 5 day event on Beale Street, which in addition to the IBC competition, also features an International Showcase, a Youth Showcase and the annual Keeping the Blues Alive awards.

Kevin got the opportunity to participate in the IBC by vir-tue of winning the Iowa Blues Challenge (IABC) Solo/Duo competition in September, presented by the Central Iowa Blues Society in Des Moines and co-sponsored by the Mississippi Valley Blues Society in Davenport, the South Skunk Blues Society in Newton and the Southeast Iowa Blues Society in Fairfield. (In 2018 the Linn County Blues Society in Cedar Rapids will also be an IABC co-sponsor.)

This was Kevin’s 2nd opportunity to participate in the IBC. In 1995, he and his band the Blues Instigators represent-ed the Central Iowa Blues Society at what was known then as the International Blues Talent Competition.

The Blues Foundation selected Blues Society of Omaha as re-cipient of a 2018 Keeping the Blues Alive award because of our innovative BluesEd youth education program. The cere-mony was held in conjunction with the 5 days of events that are part of the annual Inter-national Blues Challenge – at which two of our BluesEd bands performed in the Youth Showcase and at which the Omaha group presented a workshop, “The Blues Ed Sto-

Jason Ricci is one of the most popular harmonica players on the planet today. Listed in almost every top ten list of play-ers on the internet today, Jason Ricci, is a polarizing force always in the spotlight and on the tips of critics’, artists’ and fans’ tongues everywhere. Through two-plus decades of endless touring, TV appearances, recordings and the in-ternet, Jason Ricci’s style of playing is so revolutionary and influential that there exists an entire younger generation of players imitating his music, clothes, gear, and even stage

presence. Nicknamed “Moon Cat” (a street name he once used in Nashville and New Orleans to avoid police detec-tion), Jason has been an almost constant force for decades in the studio, festivals, club dates and press. Love him or hate him, through performing, singing, song writing, teach-ing, harmonica playing and activism in the fields of L.G.B.T., mental health and addiction, it is not an overstatement that this young, white, queer, skateboarding, punk rock loving, multiple-convicted felon is currently changing the world through music and education.

Jason was a featured performer on Johnny Winter’s Grammy award winning CD ‘Step Back’ (2014)

Has received multiple Blues Music Award Nominations 2009 – 2018, and won a Blues Music Award in 2010

Featured performer at the Rock & Roll hall of fame with Zac Brown & Tom Morello for the Paul Butterfield Blues Band induction in 2015

Seasoned professionals, they’ve earned the respect of pro-moters, club owners, producers and peers for their dedica-tion to their craft, easy going confidence and their refresh-ing lack of pretense. A testimony to their dedication is the simple fact of high quality performances and musicianship for 31 years, in what has been deemed, A Lifelong Road Trip.

In 1993 the title track “Club 15” was also on the compilation c.d. “Margaritaville Cafe - Late Night Menu” on MCA Records featuring Jimmy Buffett and various other artists.

Fourth generation performers, their musical heritage began in the latter part of the 19th century with their great-great grandfather, the classically trained violinist Valandingham Nace. The legacy continued in the 1920’s and 30’s with their grandfather Percy, a multi-instrumentalist and square dance caller. By the late 40’s, their father was playing box suppers and square dances.

Johnny Nace progressed from playing rural dances to lead-ing the house bands on the regional radio and television programs “Hillbilly Jamboree” and “Circle Six Ranch”. He re-corded rockabilly in the late 50’s before finding his musical home during the golden age of honky-tonk. An astute song-

writer, he led a top notch band to regional success with songs like “Sing me the blues” and “Blue Notes”. Their 1997 release “Roots of Steel” is a tribute to their father and the lessons he taught them.

In their 31st year as a touring group, the Nace Brothers are poised for a larger audience. Brilliant songwriting, expres-sive vocals, soaring guitar and a rock solid rhythm section combine for entertainment at its best.

Kim Wilson is one the best blues singers and harmonica players of our time. He has been a favorite of mine since he helped found the Fabulous Thunderbirds decades ago. Muddy Waters once said that Wilson was the best harp player since Little Walter!

On this album, there are sixteen songs. Four cuts are originals and twelve are covers. Wil-son pays homage to the Chicago musicians and their classic songs that influenced him. He performs the songs very traditionally, but he still man-ages to give his own take on each song. Some of my favor-ite musicians accompany Wilson. Among them are the al-ways tasteful Billy Flynn on guitar and the late Barrelhouse

Kim Wilson • Blues and Boogie, Vol. 1Severn Records

Chuck on piano.

The highly spirited “Bonus Boogie” opens the cd. The instrumental is a great introduction to the cd. Wilson also does great versions of Little Walter’s “Teenage Beat” and “Blue and Lonesome”.

This is a cd that will appeal to harmonica en-thusiasts, but it will also be favored by tradi-tional Chicago blues lovers. I predict this out-ing will seal the deal for Wilson to be put in

the same category as the all-time blues greats that Wilson cut his teeth on. I am already looking forward to volume two!
