Welcome!

As Christians formed in a rich liturgical tradition, we believe that when we assemble for worship, we are gathering as the Body of Christ. Liturgy, a word we use for our way of worship, literally may be translated as “the work of the people.” We are enriched by your presence and participation whether this is your first time visiting with us or you are a committed member of our parish. We are a vibrant downtown community that is ready to welcome you wherever you may find yourself on your journey. We believe that the radical hospitality offered by Jesus Christ is one that we should model in our community life together as we seek to live out the Good News. Our core vocation is to Feed San Antonio with the Bread of Life; we do this in ministry by:

Feeding the hungry with real food Feeding those who are hungry for knowledge and meaning Feeding those who are hungry for beauty and creativity

For more information about our community, see announcements at the back of this leaflet and please visit our website at www.stmarks-sa.org Visitors: Please take a moment and fill out a Welcome Guest card that can be found in the pews. This can be placed in the offering plate or handed to an usher or greeter. If you would like to fill out a guest card but did not fill one out at church, visit our Welcome page at www.stmarks-sa.org or call us at 210-226-2426. Nursery Available Our Nursery, located in the Parish House, is available for children, ages 6wks-5yrs. THE SERMON The Rev. Elizabeth Knowlton

THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate: he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Celebrant Together, let us offer our supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings through Christ Jesus our only mediator.

Intercessor For this holy gathering, and for the people of God in every place: Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

For all peoples and their leaders, and for justice, mercy, and peace in the world: Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

For abundant fruits of the earth, and for farmers at harvest time: Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

For the poor and the needy, the sick and the suffering, prisoners and refugees, and the dying: Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

For all who rest in Christ, and all whose faith is known to God alone (especially…): Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

For our city and those who live in it, and for our families, companions, and all those we love, especially… and for those with long-term needs…: Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Lifting our voices with all creation, with the Blessed Virgin Mary, with Mark, and with all your saints, let us offer ourselves and one another to the living God through Christ. To you, O Lord.

Page 7: THE N S P 24.… · Children’s Chapel At the 9.00 am service, there is a special Children’s Chapel for the Liturgy of the Word that begins in the Jerusalem Chapel for preschool

Celebrant God of every bounty, hear the prayers we offer this day and entrust us with your riches from above, that we may hold them in faith, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

CONFESSION OF SIN BCP 360 Celebrant

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Silence may be kept.

Celebrant and People:

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Celebrant concludes with an absolution. THE PEACE

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

Psalm 5:3

(11.15 Pilgrims’ Hymn Stephen Paulus (1949 - 2014

Even before we call on your name to ask you, O God, when we seek for the words to glorify you, you hear our prayer; Unceasing love, O unceasing love, surpassing all we know.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Even with darkness sealing us in, we breathe your name, and through all the days that follow so fast, we trust in you; Endless your grace, O endless your grace, beyond all mortal dream.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING - Eucharistic Prayer A BCP 361

Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Here a Proper Preface is sung or said. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

SANCTUS & BENEDICTUS – Mass in E Jeffrey Smith

The people stand or kneel.

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me." Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Page 9: THE N S P 24.… · Children’s Chapel At the 9.00 am service, there is a special Children’s Chapel for the Liturgy of the Word that begins in the Jerusalem Chapel for preschool

e Celebrant continues

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

AGNUS DEI – Mass in E Jeffrey Smith

e First Lesson – Jeremiah 31:27-34

The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of humans and the seed of animals. And just as I have watched over them to pluck up and break down, to overthrow, destroy, and bring evil, so I will watch over them to build and to plant, says the Lord. In those days they shall no longer say: "The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge." But all shall die for their own sins; the teeth of everyone who eats sour grapes shall be set on edge. The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt-- a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, "Know the Lord," for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

e Second Lesson – 2 Timothy 3:14-4:5

As for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it, and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work. In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favorable or unfavorable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully.

e Holy Gospel – Luke 18:1-8

Jesus told his disciples a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart. He said, "In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect for people. In that city there was a widow who kept coming to him and saying, `Grant me justice against my opponent.' For a while he refused; but later he said to himself, `ough I have no fear of God and no respect for anyone, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually coming.'" And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long in helping them? I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them. And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?"
