• Early in the morning of September 13th, a man broke into a mansion and shot the rich couple that lived there.

• The man ransacked the mansion to make it seem as if the crime was just a robbery gone bad.

• At 8 a.m. when the house keeper came to the house for work, she discovered her employers laying in the living room murdered!

• She flipped out and called the police.

• Detectives Benson and Stabler walked into the mansion and discovered that this wasn’t going to be an easy case.

• There was 2 bodies and blood everywhere..• The coroner said that there was too much blood at the

scene for there to be just two bodies, and the location of blood samples made it seem like the suspect or suspects hurt themselves during the murder.

• They took samples of the different spots of blood and took them to the lab.

• The lab scientist were distressed at all samples of blood that were brought to them. So they used several different ways to discover the DNA of all the blood samples.

• The Detectives and scientists worked side by side to identify that there were three different types of blood at the crime scene, which meant that there were three different types of DNA.

• Scientist used Restriction Enzymes to isolate the DNA from the blood samples that were found at the crime scene.

• Restriction Enzymes cut DNA in specific locations. This time scientist had it cut 13 times.

• PCR • Used by the scientist to multiply the amount of DNA

available. • The DNA was put into a test tube and then sent through

continuous cycles of hot and cold that were controlled until the amount of DNA desired was reached.

• The DNA samples were inserted into wells in an agarose gel, then placed into a buffer, and had an electric current sent through them that allowed the DNA to travel down the gel.

• Scientists could then see all the base sequences in the DNA.

• To assure that the DNA was accurately found, the scientist sent the DNA to another lab where they preformed Southern Blotting.

• Southern Blotting allows scientists to see the presence of certain nucleotide sequences in the DNA samples through a hybridization technique .

• When Detectives Benson and Stabler got the DNA results back, their suspicions of who the victims are were confirmed.

• Two of the DNA blood samples belonged to the two victims: Princeton and Blair Livingston, who just happened to be millionaires.

• The detectives assumed that the last sample of DNA had to belong to the murderer, the only problem was is that they didn’t know who it belonged to.

• A few weeks before the murders a strange man was seen lurking around the Livingston’s Mansion. So the Detectives sent a sketch of the man to the news and asked anyone who knew who the man to come forward.

• Instantly phone calls began coming in, but only one lead seemed to be useful.

• Detectives had a call come in by an anonymous caller that the man they were looking for was the chef at a local grille.

• The man’s name was Samuel Johnson, and he was being sued by the Livingston's for supposedly giving them food poisoning. If the case went to court, Mr. Johnson’s business would be shut down.

• This new evidence made Mr. Johnson the number one Suspect in the double homicide.

• When the detectives brought him in, he immediately lawyered up. But it didn’t matter because they had more than enough evidence to get a warrant for his DNA.

• Once the DNA was sent to the lab the scientist were immediately able to see that Mr. Johnson’s DNA matched the other DNA found at the crime scene.

• Mr. Samuel Johnson was arrested and charged with two counts of 1st Degree murder.

• When the case was taken to court the jury had no trouble convicting Mr. Johnson, due to the magic of DNA!
