President’s Message, 31/12/19 Dear MVs, Anyeonghaseyo from a very cold South Korea where the temperature is expected to be – 10 degrees tomorrow. As I do every year, I want to extend my gratitude and appreciation to all of you for your time spent volunteering at our National Museum in 2019. I must also thank our committee members, trainers, librarians and speakers for the training programme, for their commitment in performing their duties. This year, besides our regular guided tours in English, Japanese and French, we have added extra tours in Korean. Thank you Angela and Youngju for setting up our new Korean team (MVK). This year also saw unprecedented numbers in our training programme. Almost 100 people signed up to be docents. We have never experienced such overwhelming numbers before and there was a point where we contemplated on whether we should turn people away. Fortunately, it all worked out well. But what are we going to do with so many guides, assuming 70% of the trainees become full fledged guides? I am already in the process of organising new guiding slots at the Orang Asli Gallery and Ethnology Museum next year. A few days of training and information will be provided for those who are interested in guiding in these 2 museums, so please look out for my email next year. Following the success from the Golden Man tours recently, we have also been asked to provide guided tours for the 2 new temporary exhibitions in 2020 ie The Lost Kingdoms and hopefully for the Egyptian Pharaoh’s Artefacts exhibition. It will be a busy year. For Focus, though we did not have an outstation trip this year, it was made up with the many interesting speakers we had ranging from talks on Colonial Malaya to Perak Man. And did we ever find out the truth about Hang Tuah? We have new programs and a newsletter in store for you in 2020. I am already looking forward to it. Happy New Year everybody! With best wishes for a good year ahead, Karen Loh

Japanese Invasion Money of Malaya 1941-1945, Talk by Gilbert Chang, 18/1/2020 For the first Focus event of the year, Gilbert Chang, collector and certified numismatist, gave us an amusing talk about JIM (Japanese Invasion Money) on 18th January. He led us into a world of military strategies, espionage, counterfeiting, recycling and value investing! We learnt that the Japanese had prepared JIM and brought them when they invaded Malaya in 1941. We learnt about the different series of JIM. We learnt about British and American espionage and their counterfeiting of JIM. We learnt how JIMs were recycled after the War ended into war souvenirs. And finally how “duit pisang” is not so pisang anymore! A JIM with a MB serial number can fetch more than RM7500! For further information, check out alphanumis.blogspot.com or www.alphanumis.com

This exhibition will condense six decades of central banking and provide the historical context needed to understand the institution that has been tasked from day one to develop the financial and economic landscape of Malaysia. Bank Negara Malaysia is a bank made by the people, for the people.

Jacques de Morgan is a French archaeologist who travelled to Perak in the late 19th century to prospect for tin mines and ended up being the first to map the territory. He compiled all his impressions in his journal, giving exquisite renderings of the people he met and the places he went to.
