Our Certifications

Cofaco holds the “Dolphin Safe” certification awarded by the Earth Island Institute, guaranteeing the fish we use is caught without harming the dolphin population. The monitoring of these fisheries has been carried out by the Programa de Observação para as Pescas dos Açores, POPA, since 1998.

The “Friend of the Sea” certification attests the sustainability of our fisheries, guaranteeing the fish is caught responsibly in areas where fish stocks are not over-exploited and with minimal impact on the environment. The certificate was issued in 2001 for Pole&Line tune fishery.

Cofaco is certified by BRC Global Standards, a leading quality and safety certification programme that assures the standardisation of criteria for quality, safety and operations. It ensures the industry complies with its legal obligations and protects the consumer.

Our Memberships

By way of APASA, the Azorean Association of Tuna Producers and Similar Species, Cofaco is a member of the International Pole & Line Foundation. Hence, our company contributes for the development and promotion of sustainable pole-and-line fisheries, as well as for the subsequent improvements in sustainable tuna supplies.

Cofaco cooperates with the Oceanography and Fisheries Department of the University of the Azores, focusing on scientific investigation towards the preservation of sea life and the sustainable use of the Atlantic Ocean. This program integrates various research projects with national and international scope.

Seeing that sustainability is a fundamental concern for Cofaco, we are currently undergoing a process towards integrating the International Sustainability Seafood Foundation (ISSF), thus contributing for the protection of the tuna ecosystem health. Our goal is to achieve MSC certification in the next 5 years, thereby defending a sustainable seafood supply market.
