Dear Parishioners:
As I was cleaning out my files in preparation for departing
St. Mary’s, I came upon my letter from Bishop Lennon
which asked me to come to Wooster. Here’s the opening
line: “After proper consultation of the Clergy Personnel
Board, I hereby transfer you from Parochial Vicar in
Westlake and appoint you Parochial Vicar of St. Mary of the
Immaculate Conception in Wooster. This four year assign-
ment becomes effective Tuesday, June 9, 2015.” I know
what you are thinking, “That was a really fast four years.”
You are right; it has only been two years! However, once a
Parochial Vicar interviews for a pastorate, which I did upon
leaving St. Bernadette (I interviewed for St. Joseph in Am-
herst), the Bishop can pull you at any time and directly ap-
point you to a pastorate, maybe even two pastorates! That is
what our Apostolic Administrator, Bishop Daniel Thomas,
has done. And, as many of you know, I found about of my
new assignment as administrator of St. Mary of the Immacu-
late Conception and Our Lady of Hope parishes in Bedford
when I was hiking in the desert of the South Dakota
Badlands!
Many people have asked me why I have to go. It used to be
that a priest needed three or four parish assignments under
his belt before he could even think about becoming pastor.
In the future, due to the ever-growing priest shortage, priests
will be lucky to get one four year assignment under their belt
before becoming pastor. There is also a scriptural reason for
moving priests from one place to another. In his Gospel,
Saint Luke wrote: “At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a de-
serted place. The crowds went looking for him, and when
they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving
them. But he said to them, ‘To the other towns also I must
proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God, because for
this purpose I have been sent” (Luke 4:42-43).
Priests in general, and Parochial Vicars in particular, are itin-
erant preachers. We go where we are sent by the Bishop, and
the Bishop is the Vicar of Christ. The stability and continuity
of any parish runs through the pastor. So now I will have the
opportunity to sprout a few roots in Bedford. It will be a six
year assignment renewable for another six. For the last
twelve years of ministry, as a seminarian and priest, I have
moved a lot, eight times in twelve years! Now it is time to
leave the parishioners of St. Mary’s in Wooster and to minis-
ter to the Catholics of Bedford, only a short one-hour drive
north.
I thank all of you for graciously accepting me as your vicar
these past two years. You have been very welcoming and
affirming, and you have helped sustain me in my ministry,
during the good times and the tough times. I’ll try not to be a
stranger to Wooster in the months to come. Know that you
are always welcome to visit me at either of my parishes in
Bedford. My new mailing address is:
St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception
300 Union St., Bedford, Ohio, 44146
You remain in my prayers.
Yours in Christ, Father Joe

GRATEFUL GIVING REFLECTION:
IT TAKES A LIFETIME
Generations of faith-filled Catholic people have passed on to us the most precious gift that we possess—the gift of faith. As this generation’s “good stewards,” we are obligated to pass on the gift of faith to our children.
Children primarily learn through the examples of their parents. Today, many parents are volunteering their time and talents to their churches and community groups and bringing their children along with them. More and more churches are encouraging children to return a portion of their “treasure”—their allowance or other earnings—with special children’s offering envelopes. As we know from our own experience, it takes a lifetime to develop the habits of good stewardship.
God has blessed us in so many marvelous ways. Stewardship is a way of life built around gratitude to God, lived out by returning a portion of the time, talent, and treasure allotted to us. There is no more precious inheritance we can pass on to our children than this lifestyle of gratitude.
“If you will give these instructions . . ., you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound teaching you have followed.” (1 Timothy 4:6)
GRATEFUL GIVING PROGRAM
UPDATE
Our Grateful Giving Program is being very well received by the people of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception. To date, 287 households have increased their weekly contribution in response to our Grateful Giving Program, representing a combined week-ly increase of $3,962.60
Please use the special Grateful Giving envelope to indicate your new level of giving, and then return to your regular envelope packet for succeeding weeks. If you are interested in receiving information on our Electronic Giving Program, please contact the parish office.
To the staff of St. Mary's School: Thank you for continued dedication to the students and families of our school. Have a safe and restful summer. Don't forget to check out our new school website.
