Writers usually dread reviews. They are like a box of chocolates: you never know what you will get. However, in 25+ years of writing books, I have never been surprised by a foreword--until now. When the results of my request for a foreword from Dr. Venus Reese arrived in my inbox. I right clicked on the message, opened the Word doc. and the first line read, "You may not like this book." Dr. Venus Opal Reese Says You May Not Like My New Book- The Most Honest Foreword Ever!

I'm rarely timid but I was hesitant to ask Dr. Venus Opal Reese to write the foreword for my new

self-help/leadership book Success Is A Side Effect. Dr. V has journeyed from homeless teen on

the streets of Baltimore to becoming a Stanford graduate, renowned scholar, business

entrepreneur coach for CEO's, and consultant for "O" magazine among many other amazing

credentials. There is a reason her tagline is "Defy Impossible!"

But I practice what I teach, “You have not, because you ask not.” After attending one of her

transformational programs and benefiting from her personal coaching, I posed the question,

"Would you be willing to write the foreword for my new self-help, motivational book?" She said

yes.

Two months later, the results arrived in my inbox. I righted

clicked on the message, opened the Word doc. and the first

line read, "You may not like this book." I fell to my knees

and dropped my iPad. The edits, layout, cover, copyright,

LCCN...everything was ready and waiting on the foreword.

If she hated the book, why write the foreword, I wondered. I

collected the scattered parts of my dreams and sat at my

desk to read the rest before I deleted it. Thank goodness I

kept reading. Here is what she said:

Foreword to Success Is A Side Effect

Be warned: you may not “like” this book.

Here’s why.

Dr. mOe Anderson tells the truth.

And truth can be uncomfortable.

In your face.

Needed.

You may not “like” this book.

But you just might “need” it.

I know I did.

I am a successful woman of power.

We all are.

Even if we use that power to keep our lives in turmoil, we are still powerful.

But are we human?

Do you and I give ourselves the internal permission to cry, or curse, or call a spade a spade?

Do we take responsibility for handicapping our loved ones so we feel needed?

Do we rob our bodies of much-needed rest so we can finish the job?

If you are anything like me, you have made it by pushing through, making it happen, and, on

some very real and tangible levels, self-sacrificing.

But, are you happy?

Are you free?

Can you stand up for yourself without talking down to others?

Are you willing to put distance between yourself and people who diminish you?

These are the “truth” questions Dr. mOe indirectly pushes you to examine.

Here, she shoots from the hip.

She ignites truth with power—and you may not like it.

But you need it.

I know I did.

I needed a woman to care enough about me to sit down and write out the practical wisdom that

most successful women overlook in our drive to be “somebody.”

I needed a woman to tell me how others are always watching and that perhaps in my need for

approval I am giving them the exact tool they need to cut me off at the knees.

I needed a woman to open her heart about her own body betraying her…feeling like time was a

gun pressed against the back of her head, threatening in a hushed whisper, “I can end your life

any moment now.”

Dr. mOe is a woman who knows that life is literally one breath at a time—and she writes like

this pen, this paper, this pad is possibly her last word.

So she’s not pulling punches.

She’s not sugarcoating.

She is on a mission. She wants her experiences, good and bad, to help others.

Women.

Me.

You.

Us.

In these pages she will make you laugh, look deeply into your humanity, and love yourself better

in all of your perfect imperfections.

As I said before: you may not like this book.

But if you are willing to own your power and experience life as sacred breath, you may love this

book—and yourself a little more because you read it.

I am of the opinion when a book falls into my life, I have called it to me because my heart, mind,

soul, and spirit are ready for me to evolve.

Dr. mOe believes reading and investing in yourself will get you multiple streams of happiness.

I invite you to enjoy this investment of time and intimate self-reflection so you can, with a bit

more ease and confidence, be guided more fully to your destiny.

But be warned: this book—which you may not like, but quietly need—can change your life…
