iDirect is the
industry’s leading
IP-based satellite
communications
company providing
hardware, software, and
services that enable partners to
optimize networks and expand
their business
How should I
go about it?
What does it
mean to my
Business and
why should I
be interested?
What is HTS
all about?
I am Ready !!
HTS
World
So what Exactly is HTS ?
• By definition, High Throughput Satellites
(HTS) are the new breed of satellites
which are able to support data rates
which are higher (typically ten-fold) the
traditional satellite capacity. They can
be Ka as well as Ku.
• How do they do this?
• By incorporating the principle of
frequency reuse
• So the traditional large regional
beams are now split into smaller spot
beams. (typically 1 to 2% of that of a
traditional beam.)

Market Trends: Oil & Gas
• High usage of satellite solutions
• Continued global demand which drives new production
• Increasing environmental protection and safety
requirements
• Enormous potential in deep water drilling
• Production gains and well cost reduction are key
• High complexity and sophistication in drilling operations
O&G Operations
• Deepwater Drilling Drilling rigs, vessels,
production platforms
• Shallow Water Drilling Jackup rigs, lift boats,
production platforms
• Land Based Drilling Fixed or self-pointing, vehicle
or trailer mount
• Remote Operations Offices, logistics, etc
• Maritime Tankers
• SCADA Pipelines, plants, refineries
Technology Innovations
Oil & Gas Industry use cases
• Dispersed use cases: high bandwidth applications on offshore rigs to low bandwidth applications on SCADA networks
• High bandwidth applications (HD Video, VoIP, and Data) enabling experts at central locations and crew welfare
• New drilling capabilities ie Fracking
• Security applications (video surveillance) along the pipeline
What Next
OK. So I choose HTS for
Bandwidth. How about the
Ground Segment? Where
should I look for it?
