Summer Bi- Annual 2014 Campus Minister, Deacon Bryan O, has been organizing and chaper- oning the Mission trips for the past 14 years. Each year approximately 38 of our SJA students parcipate in our Mission Trip program. These students make a trip in either January or March to Jamaica to assist the poor, the handicapped and the elderly. Each trip has a similar inerary and the mission is always the same: to serve the poorest of the poor in a multude of ways. Students are deeply affected by these experiences, as is evidenced in their own words, during reflecon me, a daily occurrence, which involves spontaneous prayer and sharing their thoughts with the group. What follows are the hearelt and sincere senments of some of the students: “I thought I knew how to love, but here I realized how to love fully, to give my whole heart away.” “This trip has impacted me tremendously, has made me realize how much I love working with the disabled and that I might have a career in it”. “Last year, Jamaica changed my life and I didn’t think it could change it any more this year, but it did; I want to beer myself so I can beer help others.” “I’ve never felt closer to God than on this trip. Giving in this way is the most rewarding thing you could do.” “We think our problems are much bigger than they really are. My issues are so superficial compared to fami- lies who are without bathrooms and kids who don’t have food to eat. It puts things in a completely different perspecve.” “I’ve always struggled with my faith. Coming here has completely changed my life and opened my eyes. Dear Friends,

As we conclude the 2013-2014 school year, Saint Joseph Academy graduated 75 students. We are proud of them and of the educational and formational opportunities that we were able to provide for them during their years at St. Joseph Academy.

This school year has brought many improvements to our campus: improved lighting in our parking lot, addi-tional landscaping, the baseball field has new signage and bleachers. Our Faculty and Administration have been im-proving their skills in the area of technology, with monthly workshops under the tutelage of our technology expert, Douglas Peacock. Every effort is being made in order to prepare for 2014-2015 when SJA will be the first school in St. Johns County to go 1:1 with chromebooks. A prototype cart was manufactured to accommodate 36 Chromebooks which can be simultaneously charged, ensuring students fully charged Chromebooks during the school day. At the end of this year we will say farewell to Mr. Brian Larkin – our long-time AP and DE History teacher who has inspired many with his love of history and entertained many more with his inimitable wit over the past 19 years. We wish him much happiness in his retirement. He will be missed.

This was the inaugural year for our SJA Tuition Raffle, which earned $16,500 for the school. The Surfin’ Safari Auction held in March brought in $96,776.81 for SJA, a marked increase over the previous year’s Auction. Our Annual Appeal and The Gus & Gabe Hall Memorial Scholar-ship together generated $42,068.75.

We would like to thank all of the generous donors, parents, alumni, volunteers and friends of the Academy who make everything that we do possible. Without your help, SJA would not be the place it is!

The Gus and Gabe Hall Memorial Scholarship was instituted in 2011, in re-sponse to the requests of many of Gus and Gabe’s friends who wished to honor their memory in a fitting manner and keep their memory alive. The idea of providing funding through this scholarship for others to attend the school that was so much a part of their lives, and then have community service be one of the most important criteria for selecting candidates, was eagerly accepted by all.

The Love2Run 5k generated $3,500 for the Gus and Gabe Hall Memorial Scholarship, Donations to the Scholarship during the 2013-2014 year totaled $4,530 for a combined total of $8,030.00. This money will be awarded to deserving students who have been accepted to St. Joseph Academy for the 2014-2015 academic year.

Mission Trip from Page 1 Deacon Ott shared his sentiments regarding the effect of the mission trip experiences: “Once again, I am floored by the impact the trips have made on our students, including our graduates. When I opened up our first Diocesan young adult trip to India earlier this year, I was flooded with responses from SJA graduates who each had stories about how their high school trip to Jamaica affected them and continues to impact their lives today. Three of our chaperones this year who are SJA graduates spoke on this year's undergraduate trips about how their trips have given direction to their lives as adults. During reflection time on this year's trips, student after student talked about how it restored their faith, opened their eyes, gave them a new perspective on life. Some spoke about walls they had built up separating them from God that came down on the trip. One even said she had never told her Mom she loved her until she came home from her first trip.” Students are inspired to go above and beyond the call when serving the poor on these mission trips, but some stand out for their selflessness and willingness to become instruments of God’s love. Two such students are recognized each trip with the “Spirit of the Mis-sion Trip Award”. John Miller and Patricia Ryan received this recognition for the January mission trip and Colin Matthaei and Josh Taylor for the March trip.

A record crowd of over 400 attended Surfin’ Safari Auc-tion! Auction guests raved about the delectable dinner, ca-

tered by The Black Molly Restaurant. We are grateful to Ryan Torboli and staff for serving up their incredibly delicious Signa-ture Dish: Datil Pepper Chicken.

Our Live Auction generated $21,290, an increase of $3,490 over the previous year. Baskets brought in $7,514 and the Restaurant category at $3,705 had a 96% return on investment ratio. Auc-tion items totaled a whopping $42,121 out of a total inventory valued at $50,000.

St. Joseph Academy’s Inaugural Tuition Raffle

The SJA Tuition Raffle is a new fundraiser for St. Joseph

Academy. In this it’s inaugural year, 250 tickets were sold in

many of the Parishes of the Diocese, and to SJA families, friends

and alumni. $16,500 net was raised for SJA and $8,500 will go to

the school of the winner’s choice!

The drawing took place following the CPS / SJA

Love2Run 5k on February 1, 2014. Sr. Carol Wells, one of the

Sisters of St. Joseph, was in attendance to pull the winning ticket.

Student Recognition and Achievement

Youth Leadership Jacksonville Created in 1989, this year-long pro-gram brings together a select and diverse group of high school juniors, with demonstrat-ed leadership ability, and prepares them to become ethical leaders committed to active community involvement. During this exciting program, stu-dents attend an Opening Retreat, six Program Days (one per month) and a Closing Retreat. Programs are practical in

nature with hands-on activities. Program Days deal with specific facets of the community such as government, criminal justice, human services, diversity and business. Each day combines a behind-the-scenes experience with a great deal of interaction with the ap-propriate community leaders.

Youth Leadership St. Johns

This St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce program is a series of fun and educational program days designed to give high school juniors a hands-on exploration of St. Johns County! Participants of the program learn the importance of teamwork and gain a better understanding of what it means to be a leader through the two-day opening retreat, and then put those teamwork and leadership skills to

use as they discover many new sides of the county over the course of eight program days (like Law Day, Social Services Day, and Business Day). At the program’s end, students will have met a number of key contacts throughout their community and will have a clear idea of what makes St. Johns County work, as well as a ton of fun memories from the experience!

HOBY Leadership Award

For over 5 decades, Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) has inspired young people to make a difference and to become catalysts for positive change in their home, school, workplace, and community. As America’s foremost youth leader-ship organization, HOBY has a long and im-

pressive history of success-fully motivating youth and volunteers to outstanding leadership. HOBY aims to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation. Senior Dominic Garofalo received the High School All-Star Ahtlete Award from Channel 4 Dominic was recognized for excellence in Athletics, Academics and Community Service. Dominic has been a member of the Varsity Swim Team all 4 years, Varsity Basketball and Track & Field team for 2 years. He was Team Captain for the Swim team all 4 years and the Track and Cross Country Team Captain for 2 years.

Dominic has been to Jamaica on a mission trip and lists this experiences as one of the “best and most memorable experiences of my life.” He is

currently Vice-President of Students for the Poor, NHS Chaplain and Past-President, a member of the Science National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and Spanish National Honor Society, In addition, Dominic is a Lead Petty Officer in the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps, a Lifeguard and a Youth Swim Coach. Dominic received the Hoby Leadership Award in 2012-2013, was a member of the Youth Leadership Jacksonville Class XIII, and the Young Leaders Conference.

National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizens Scholarship Essay Contest Recognizes SJA Senior Lee Williams

Lee Williams was selected as the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) Southeast Division Winner for the DAR Good Citizens Scholarship Essay Contest. His essay was chosen from several thou-sand essays written by participating students across the nation. Lee was one of eight students in the country to reach the National level competition. National Chairman Melodye G. Brown wrote, in a congratulatory letter: “You are a wonderful example of the qualities we look for in DAR Good Citizens – dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism.”

Later this summer, Lee will receive a scholarship check for $500 from The Office of the Treasurer General, NSDAR. Two National Winners will be chosen at the annual Congress in June, one boy and one girl. The National Winners will each receive a $5,000 scholarship award.

Anchor Club Chartered at SJA

In 1952, Pilot International chartered the first Anchor Club in Macon, Georgia. There are hundreds of clubs across the United States, the Bahamas and Japan, and recently the first one on the African continent, in South Africa. Anchor Clubs exist to provide volunteer service to those in need. Their slogan is: “Do More, Care More, and Be More”. On May 6, 2014, local representatives of Pilot International came to SJA to charter the Anchor Club at St. Joseph Academy. Par-ents and siblings attended the ceremony, which included an invocation, Pledge to the Flag, introduction of guests and the Chartering Cer-emony. Students signed the official Charter. This was followed by the Candle Lighting Ceremony, during which students vowed to uphold the ideals of the Anchor Pledge. Each member was presented with an Anchor Club pin. Officers were installed and everyone enjoyed refreshments together. Anchor Club members are: Alexandra Teisan, Kunfang Li, Cynthis A. Hund, Mary Rose Donasco, Nora Zhang, Jenelly E. Drama District Competition On March 27, 2014 drama students Kali Bosworth, Chloe Petito, Ana Bonura, Christina Sica and Carley Fischer, accompanied by Ms. Erin Flannigan, travelled to Tampa to attended the two-day Florida State Thespian Festival. Carley Fischer and Emily Bush competed and received an Excellent for their duet scene. The students attended acting workshops, watched students from all over compete in various scenes and attended two main-stage productions held at the Straz Performing Arts Center.

The ASL Honor Society is an opportunity for ASL students to gain recognition for high academic achievement in their study of ASL. Recognition takes the form of honor cords, the Alice Cogswell Medal, or the Laurent Clerc Medal. In addition to high academic achievement, members of the ASLHS are required to perform community service in their local Deaf community, which enhances ASL skills in addition to developing character and citizenship. The officers worked in conjunction with the ASL Club and its offic-ers. Back in October, we took a field trip to The Florida School for the Deaf and Blind to participate in a campus tour. During the field trip, the students saw the Independent Living building, Student Dorms, the Infirmary, the Dragons' Lair and the Library. They even signed with elementary students on the playground. For service hours, students in the ASL Club and ASLHS helped interpret during the SJA vs. FSDB football and basketball games. They signed the prayer and the Star Span-gled Banner. Also, they helped out at the concession stand so that students from FSDB would feel comfortable when ordering their food. This also gave them an opportunity to practice their receptive and expressive skills with the Deaf stu-dents. Our fundraiser this year was to sell candy-grams for Valentine's Day. The Officers decided to donate the proceeds to help the students going on the second Mission Trip with their expenses. Since the trip was already paid for, Dcn. Ott informed us that the money was used to help build a home. Many students in ASL 3 and 4 were participants in both Mission Trips and over $300 was raised.

A Family Reunion to Die For

SJA Drama Club performed "A Family Reunion to Die For“ on March 7th and 8th, a comedy, murder mystery with audience interaction. Newlyweds Christine and Freddie Frank-lin plan their honeymoon at the Wilcox's Western Bed & Breakfast, while also celebrating Christine's family reunion. Things are going quite well until some of the family members are murdered! Wannabe detective, Freddie, searches for clues to find out who is the murder-er. The show included an interactive session with the audience to help solve the murder case. Both performances enjoyed record attend-

ance. Mrs. Flannigan and the Drama Club are grateful to everyone that attended the play and appreciate their support of the Drama Club.

WRAP Club

Corinthians 2: verses 4-13 states that, “It is written: ‘I believed; therefore I have spoken.’ Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak.” Inspired by their faith, several students at Saint Joseph Academy set out to form a new club centered on creating a community of people pursuing an active relationship with Jesus. WRAP stands for Worship-Read-Apply-Pray. Throughout its first year, WRAP club meetings have attracted as many as 60 students to the monthly meetings. The group tackles topics from love to rebirth. The student founders draw their inspiration from popular Old Testament stories and have helped members see these through a modern and relatable perspective. Meetings consist of reading scripture, interactive games, student testimonies, and small group discussion. They have a tradition of playing Christian rap music at the beginning and end of their meetings and enjoying baked goods. They learned early on that free food never hurts to boost attendance.

The founders and officers of the club include Emily Bush, Julia Carmedelle, Sam Cosme, Carley Fischer, Dominic Garofalo, Audrey McKinney, Trish Ryan, and Ragan Sawyer. Father Rich-ard Pagano moderates WRAP club, keeping the students centered on God and what He is calling them to do through this club. Mark 16:15, “And he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.’”

Students for the Poor SJA students are members of the Students for the Poor non-profit organization. This is the agency that Dcn. Ott works with to organize and conduct the mission trips to Jamaica. As part of this program, students are required to fundraise in

order to provide building materials and various other items needed for the homes they build in Jamaica. For the second year in a row, a challenge is presented to all the SJA students: to raise as much money as possible, through C-period classes. The winning class receives a Chick-Fil-A breakfast. The total amount raised in the C-period classes was over $5,600. The winning C period classes were: 1. Dr. William’s: $42.32 per student; 2. Mr. Larkin’s: $40.82; 3. Mrs. Yancey’s $26.73 4. Mr. Maass’s $24.38. St. Anastasia's youth group organized a fundraiser that brought in $2,215 which is included in the above total. The Cathedral Parish donated $3,412.95 from their Holy Thursday collection. In addition, a further $300 was raised through the online Champions for the Poor fundraising page for a grand total of $11,527.95. Officers Katie Stecker, Dominici Garofalo, Lee Williams and Stephanie Jones, coordinated the drive and created the Champions Page; Lee Williams also addressed the Cathedral Parish Council last year, which was instrumental in obtaining their donation this year.

On April 2nd, 2014 SJA Art students gathered in the gym for their show. Each student was required to choose three 3 of their best works from their 2013-2014 portfolio to be displayed at the Art Show. After several weeks of set-up and planning, friends, family, and artists alike gathered to view Drawing and Pottery students’ very best works of art. Their hard work was rewarded when family members, friends, alumni and other stu-dents entered the Art Show. The crowd was

amazed at the caliber of talent displayed at the Art Show. In preparation for the show, students were informed that they would receive a grade for participation in the Art Show. The main criteria for this grade were: punctuality and the student’s ability to interact with all those who viewed their work. Students were to answer any questions about their art, and to explain the process if neces-sary. After a short two hours, the end of the show was announced. The next day, several SJA teachers brought their classes in for a viewing. Again, the re-sponse was positive, and several non-art students appeared inspired to become involved in art the following year. Students were responsible for breaking down easels and tables and removing them along with the artwork so that the gym would be available for physical education classes again. Congratulations to Mr. Nate Fudala on a very successful first Art Show ! Mr. Fudala expressed his gratitude to the artists for all their hard work and composure at the show and commented: “I

look forward to improving on it next year, and in years to come.”

Boys Baseball District 3-A Champions 2014

On Thursday, May 1, SJA student athletes and their families gathered in the Media Center, along with students, faculty and ad-ministrators to witness this special event. Josh Braun, Coach for the Boys and Girls Varsity Soccer teams spoke about the qualities of each athlete: Kat shows remarkable intensity and emotion in a game and is not satisfied with mistakes. She will find the edge of ability to deal with adversity and is an inspiring player.” Kat will play for Columbia College Koalas of South Carolina. Coach Kiper said about Kat, "We are really happy to get a goalkeeper of Kat's quality here at Columbia College. She is tall, has great feet and fantastic reflexes and will definitely be an asset to the squad with her leadership and on field ability." At Columbia, Yahnke is interested in majoring in either Physi-cal Therapy or Sports Medicine. Kat received a full athletic scholarship. Colin grew and improved more from 9th grade until the present than any other player; he has worked hard and has a positive

attitude, drive and desire.” Colin will attend Birmingham Southern College in the fall. He received an academic scholarship in the amount of $21,000 per year for 4 years. “Matt is a perfectionist. He received St. Johns County Player of the Year. He is driven and would always work on each new skill until he mastered it. “ Matt will be playing for the Rollins University Tars. He earned a $22,000 academic scholarship and an $8,000 athletic scholarship for each of his 4 years. “Tyler is smooth, steady and consistent. You could rely on Tyler. “ Tyler will play for the Falcons of Montevallo University in Alabama. Tyler received a partial athletic scholarship. Congratulations to these dedicated student-athletes; mo-tivation and hard work have certainly paid off and will stand them in good stead for a successful future.

Team Record: 16-6 Regular Season, 16-8 (3A District Runner-Ups) Lost to University Christian in FHSAA 3A Regional Quarterfinals The 2013-2014 Lady Flashes basketball team had a season to remember on and off the hardwood!!! Overcoming several season ending injuries to key players, including a tragic situation with senior Co-Captain/Point Guard Megan Leitner having to be brought back to life from cardiac arrest six games into the season; the team showed its true character by overcoming adversity and finishing with a successful 16-8 season as 3A District runner ups!!! The Lady Flashes were led by two new senior twin sisters Megan and Molly Leitner. Co-Captain, Molly Leitner (Sr.) played a major role playing several positions while averaging 9ppg, 5rpg, 74%FT, 41%3p, and being the team’s most versatile player, making All-County 2nd Team All-County and named as the St. Joseph Academy MVP. Freshman standout Katie Cramer was a welcome new addition, leading the team in scoring with 12.3ppg, 7rpg, 2apg, 70%FT, 38%3pt, named All-County 2nd team, and SJA Offensive Player of the Year. Junior Kristen Wohlfarth was a force in the paint as the team leading rebounder with 8rpg & 7ppg. while earning the SJA Ms. Hustle award. Stephanie Roden (Jr.) was named Defensive Play-er of the Year. Additionally, Hila Cowart (Jr.) and Catherine George(Fr.) greatly contributed with Most Improved player awards. The SJA Coach’s Award winner was Megan Leitner for her courageous full recovery and dedication to the team. The Flash Gold Star Awards went to Gabby Dinsmore, Taylor Piesco, & Kat Dinsmore for Special Recognition of Selfless Ser-vice and Commitment to the Team over the past 3- 4years. Seniors: Megan Leitner plans to attend UF to study medicine, Molly Leitner will attend UCF, Gabby Dinsmore will attend Abilene Christian Uni-versity in Texas and Fan Bu will attend Indiana Uni-versity in Bloomington.

Ian Pickens, Class of ‘06, earned the degree of Juris Doctor from Florida Coastal School of Law in May 2014.

Adam Hardy, Class of ‘08 earned his Firefighters Certificate from Florida State Fire College in Ocala and his Paramedic Certificate from Daytona State College. Adam has been working for Flagler County as a firefighter and paramedic for 3 years.

Lauren Parker, Class of ’10, graduated from UNF in May 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with minors in Mass Communications and Creative Writing.

Harrison Thornhill, Class of ‘07 has completed studies at Candler School of Theology Emory University for a Masters of Divinity degree.

Meg Devereux, Class of ‘10 graduated with Honors earning a Bachelors degree in Bio-psychology from Spring Hill College in Ala-bama. She received the President’s Award in Bio-psychology. Meg plans to apply to Tulane for graduate school where she will study

Behavioral Neuroscience.

Molly Hardy, Class of ‘10, graduated from UNF with a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education. Molly be teaching 4th Graders at Holy Rosary School in the fall. The Jamaican mission trips were instrumental in steering Molly toward this choice and this is where she feels she can make a difference.

Sheila Greenleaf, Class of ’73, was recognized on October 23, 2013 for her 40th anniversary with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, where she has served as a Communications Operator, a Switchboard Operator and a Secretary in the Communications Unit, Internal Affairs and for the Director of Investigations/Chief of Staff. When Sheila was a sophomore at SJA, she was a charter member of the Law Enforcement Explorer Post 911 the year it was instituted . when it was organized her sopho-more year of high school. Sheila is presently a Training Specialist.

ALUMNI REUNION

The St. Joseph Academy Class of 1973 gathered for their 40th Class Reunion July 19-21, 2013. Friday evening’s meet and greet was hosted by Red and Kim Crutchfield at their home in St. Augustine South where class members and friends enjoyed a potluck supper. Saturday morning members gathered for a pool party and brunch hosted by Mandee Dunn McAloon and Peggy Peele Morrow at Mandee McAloon’s home at St. Augustine Beach. Saturday evening’s reunion event was at the St. Augus-tine Yacht Club at Lighthouse Park, where dinner was catered by Sonny’s Barbecue and a DJ provided entertainment. Sunday morning Mass was celebrated at the Cathedral Basilica, followed by brunch at the home of Bonnie Maniscalco Jones.
