The Mirror’s VALUABLE TIPS TO HELP YOU ACHIEVE A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE Guide To Good Health Medical director Dr. Walid Mahmoud and physician assistant Brent Bernard of Greater Toledo Urgent Cares discuss plans to open Waterville Urgent Care at 7728 Dutch Rd. in Waterville Township later this year. MIRROR PHOTO BY KAREN GERHARDINGER BY KAREN GERHARDINGER MIRROR REPORTER A 10-acre, partially wood- ed parcel behind the Waterville McDonald’s will be the site of Waterville Urgent Care by the end of the year. Greater Toledo Urgent Cares (GTUC) plans to open its fourth area facility in half of the planned 10,000-square- foot Dutch Road Medical Center at 7728 Dutch Rd. The other half will be avail- able for rent for medical- related offices. Accessed by a service road between Peinert-Dunn Funeral Home and McDonald’s, the location is ideal for patient privacy, yet visible enough from the Anthony Wayne Trail, said medical director Dr. Walid Mahmoud. Like the other locations, the medical staff will admin- ister primary medical care, such as employment and sports physicals, test diagnos- tics, radiology, treatment for illness and sport-related injuries, vaccinations and more. What sets GTUC apart is its focus on emergency medi- cine-trained personnel, said Mahmoud, who is an ER physician at UTMC and has 15 years of teaching emer- gency medicine. The staff is trained weekly on multiple emergency scenarios so they are prepared. “We can handle more urgent cases, and we also spe- cialize in sports injuries,” Mahmoud said. If someone walks in with a broken bone, the staff can X-ray, diagnose, splint, cast and provide a referral to an orthopedic spe- cialist. GTMC also offers on-the- spot lab work, radiology, IV fluids, EKGs and referrals for therapy. Common lab tests include strep, drugs and sugar levels. Urine tests can come back within minutes. Blood work results, contracted with an outside company, are available within hours. Each year in the U.S. alone, approximately 48,250 individuals are newly diagnosed with oralcancer. Unfortunately at this time the majority are found as late-stage disease. Thisaccounts for the very high death rate; about half those diagnosed will not survive more than

five years. The good news is that a doctor orhygienist can see or feel the precanceroustissue changes which might lead to a cancer. The examination will only take a few minutesof your time. Oral cancer patients areincreasingly young, healthy, nonsmoking indi-viduals. Everyone over the age of 18 shouldbe screened annually. The visual and tactileexam is inexpensive, painless and quick.

“These services are well-needed in the triangle ofMaumee, Waterville andWhitehouse,” Mahmoud saidMahmoud started the

facilities five years ago, as hesaw patients coming to theER for non-emergency needsbecause of a lack of appoint-ments.“This can be for some-

thing as minor as “I ran outof my blood pressure medi-cine and I can’t see my doc-tor for a week’ to injuries andmedical illnesses,” Mahmoudsaid. “We bridge the big gapbetween primary care doctorsand emergency rooms.”While the facility does

not have an affiliation withany particular hospital,GTUC works regularly witharea health care providers,

from hospitals and specialiststo family care physicians. The facilities are very pro-

tocol-driven, from the time apatient walks into the dooruntil the follow-up. A heavyinvestment in informationtechnology helps track eachpatient, as well. All of this adds up to sat-

isfied customers, patients andeven students who are doing

internships at the facility.“We’re independent – the

little guy. We’ve grownbecause people believe in us,”Mahmoud said.A date for groundbreaking has

not been set, but Mahmoudexpects the Waterville facility toopen by the end of the year. In themeantime, Dutch Road Medicalhas been added to the website atwww.greatertoledourgentcares.com.
